			    Chapter Thirty Five

"Man, I am so nervous, I can't sit still," Isaiah said.

"Don't worry about it. You will do fine," Jimmy said. He was the only one
who looked calm. Even Stan was nervous.

"That's easy for you to say. You don't have on these stupid leather pants,"
Paul said. I can't believe you talked me into wearing them."

"You look great in them. They were too small for me to wear, or I would
have them on. You guys have a lot to learn about how a rock and roll band
should dress for a performance," Jimmy added.

"Yeah, but they get to pump themselves full of drugs and alcohol before
they play. All we have is water. Hey, I see an old friend of mine near the
stage. If I know him, he has a bottle in his locker," Paul said, as he
peered at the crowd through the curtain. "If I can just get his
attention...."

"Forget about it, Paul," I said.

"I was just kidding, Stan. We all know we have to get rid of you before we
can drink after we finish," Paul kidded.

"Very funny. Well, at least you can joke around before you start
playing. Look, once you start, everyone will do fine. You have gone over
these songs so many times in the past, I think you can all play them
blindfolded. You will do great, I guarantee you," I said.

"Yeah, you guys are ready, trust me. You sounded better and better all
week," Brian said.

Just as he finished, Mr. Anderson walked around the curtain. "Are you guys
ready?" he asked.

"I think so," Isaiah said, standing up. "Tim and Tom are already sitting by
the mixing board. Brian is going to join them so he can listen from across
the room. We are all nervous, though."

"That is understandable. If you sound half as good as the cassette, the
kids will love you. OK, I am going to introduce you, and then get off the
stage. Start whenever you are ready. What are you going to play?" he asked.

"We picked `Foreplay/Long Time` to open. We aren't going to say anything,
just start the keyboard solo. Jimmy and I have split it up, and we are both
going to try playing it at the same time. It sounds better with the
different keyboard parts coming out of different speakers. Then `Lorelei`
and finish with `Peace of Mind`.

"OK. Are you ready?" he asked. "We have to get started. We might have time
for four songs if we start now," Mr. Anderson said.

"Yeah. Let us get into position, and then open the curtains. Brian, hurry
up and get to where you want to stand. Let's do it, guys. Show time!" Jimmy
said, outwardly thrilled to finally be able to play in front of a big group
of people.

Everyone got into place, the curtains opened, and Mr. Anderson stepped to
the microphone. "OK, everybody. Let me introduce a brand new band, `Too
Young To Be Scared`. How about a big round of applause for their first
performance ever in front of an audience," he said and then walked off as
the students politely clapped a little bit.

"See, they love us already," Jimmy kidded. "Count us off, Isaiah. Time to
kick some ass!"

"One, Two, Three, Four," Isaiah counted, as first Jimmy and then Isaiah
went into the split keyboard solo. The crowd was stunned as Ed kicks in the
loud bass part at the beginning, and then becomes more and more animated as
the band gets further into the `Foreplay` beginning. By the time the sound
almost dies down completely right before the start of `Long Time`, everyone
is on their feet and chairs are hitting the floor as students try and get
closer to the stage. As the beat starts getting louder and louder and
louder to start `Long Time`, everyone is clapping their hands and screaming
in anticipation.

The sound literally explodes to start the song, and the audience clearly
approves. When the band finally finishes, the crowd is in a
frenzy. Everyone in the band is beaming. The audience really did love
them!!!

Isaiah sees the condition the chairs are in and says, "Hello,
everyone. Glad we could get to play for you today. We have a couple more
songs to play now, and maybe an announcement of when you can hear us again,
if you would like to." Everyone yelled their approval.

"I hate to stop for a few minutes, but someone is going to get hurt with
those overturned chairs. BD, where are you?" Isaiah asked.

"Over here, Isaiah," he answered.

"Come over here, will you?" Isaiah asked.

BD walked over, and everyone quickly cleared a path for him. He was the
biggest black man most of the student had ever seen, 6'8" and 305 pounds of
all muscle. He was the star of the football team, playing right end on
offense and left tackle on defense.

"Hey man. You owe me a favor, remember?" Isaiah asked.

"Yeah, several, little bro. What's up?" he asked.

"How fast can you and your football buddies get all the chairs stacked in
their holders if we really blow the roof off this auditorium when you get
finished?" Isaiah asked.

"Give us five minutes, and everything will be taken care of," BD said.

"How about it, Mr. Anderson. Can we get the students to help put the chairs
away and let the students stand, like a real concert? I think it would be
lots safer that way," Isaiah said.

"I agree. The chair holders are in the back of the auditorium. Everyone who
is helping, take your time and be careful," Mr. Anderson said.

"You heard the man. Come on guys, everyone help. Let's get the chairs out
of the way so we can hear my little buddy's band some more," BD said. All
the boys and also some of the girls all start to help out, as the band just
looked on, amazed.

"God, that guy is huge. How do you know him?" Jimmy asked.

"I was in one of his classes when we first started high school. You won't
believe it, but he was shier than I was back then. He was really having
trouble in math, and I offered to help him. He was close to getting kicked
off the football team because of his grades, which picked up quickly after
that. We have been friends ever since," Isaiah answered.

"I am glad he is your friend, and not your enemy. I would hate to get into
a fight with him," Jimmy said.

"Yeah, I played on the ninth grade team that year. Before BD was moved to
the varsity, I had to practice against him. I was the fullback, and they
expected me to block him. It was like hitting a brick wall. I tried my
best, but he was just too big to handle," Ed said.

All the chairs had been put up, and the crowd was now in place, BD in the
front of the stage. "Anything else I can do for you, Isaiah," he asked.

"Not right now, bud. How about we play a little more for all of you?"
Isaiah asked. The students roared back their approval.

"OK, that last song was called `Foreplay/Long Time` by Boston. The next is
called `Lorelei` by Styx," he said, as he sat down behind his
keyboards. "One, Two, Three, Four," he counted off, and then he and Jimmy
started their dual keyboard solo to start the song. As Isaiah started the
vocals, the audience started to get more animated as they started getting
into the unfamiliar song. The rest of the band finally joined Jimmy and
Isaiah, as the song exploded into pure rock and roll. Isaiah almost
strutted up to the front of the stage, as he danced around to the beat of
the music. By the time the song started to end with everyone singing in
harmony, everyone was back in frenzy mode. Then, Robbie and Phill took off
with the guitar duet they had added at the end, and they ended the song to
furious applause.

"Thank you. Thank you," Isaiah said, trying to stop the applause. "Our last
song is called `Peace of Mind` by Boston. It is more guitar dominated, so
we dedicate it to our guitarists, Phill and Robbie. One, Two, Three, Four,"
Isaiah yelled, as the crowd had already started to applaud. Robbie and
Phill started in on the dual guitar lead in to the song, Isaiah kicked in
the vocals, and before they knew it, Robbie and Phill were finishing the
ending dual guitar leads where one solos, then the other, back and forth,
until the finally come together playing the same lead, but in different
keys. In a way too short amount of time, their first concert was over, and
no one wanted them to quit. Not them, not the kids in the audience, and not
Mr. Anderson.

He quickly came back up on stage and said, "That was `Too Young To Be
Scared`! What does everyone think? Are they awesome, or what?" The crowd
roared their approval. "OK, would you like to hear them play lots more
songs?" The noise got even louder. "They have agreed to play again after
the football game tonight. Five dollars per person and you get to hear them
play as long as they want. Up to reason, you understand, but lots longer
than what you heard this afternoon. How does that sound?" Again, huge
applause. "OK, you are all dismissed for the day."

"Mr. Anderson, one second please. BD, I want our team to win by at least
twenty points tonight, OK? If you do, we won't start playing until all of
you guys take a shower and change clothes," Isaiah said.

"You got a bet," BD answered.

"And BD, one more thing. Do take a shower after the game, OK? You didn't
always do that enough when I first met you," Isaiah kidded.

"Funny boy! I think I might have to come up there and teach you what you
can say on stage and what you can't," he said laughing, as he faked
climbing onto the stage.

"No, that's all right," he said, putting up the microphone and running
towards the back of the stage, as everyone laughed at them.

As the students left the auditorium, the band stood around as Stan, Tim,
and Tom told them how good they had sounded. Many students that were
friends of theirs and also complete strangers also came up and talked to
them. They were a big hit, lots bigger than they could have ever dreamed
they would be.

Phill finally looked around and saw Keith standing off to one side, beaming
at him. Keith's bodyguard also was standing further away. "Robbie, Keith is
over there. I didn't know he was even here. I am going over to say hello to
him, OK?" Phill asked.

Robbie stared at him for a moment, and then said, "No kissing, understand?"

"Yes, sir!" Phill said sternly, saluting him, and then they both
laughed. Kissing in front of all of these students still milling around was
the one thing Phill could guarantee Robbie he wouldn't do. Everything was
going too good right now, and he didn't want any rumors of him being gay
spread out all over the school.

Phill ran over to where Keith was standing. "Hi Keith. I didn't know you
were here. Did you hear us play?" Phill asked.

"I got here late. I heard most of the song before last and all the last
one. All of you were sensational. You are too good to be playing in front
of a high school crowd. I think it is time for you to release a record,"
Keith said.

Phill just laughed. "We need lots more experience before we are able to do
that. Mr. Shepherd would never let us record anything yet."

"What if I told you Mr. Shepherd doesn't really have anything to say about
it? Except maybe as an employee," Keith said with a smile on his face.

"Huh? What do you mean? He owns the studio where we have been practicing
and made our recording. You know that," Phill replied.

"He did own it. My father and I own it now. I bought it for you and your
band," Keith said with a smile.

"What? You did what?" Phill yelled.

"Phill, calm down. What is the matter? I thought you would be
thrilled. What did I do now?" Keith asked, alarmed at how mad Phill was
all of a sudden.

"You just don't get it." Phill said, walking away. "You don't get it, do
you?" he asked as he walked back, pacing. "I try to be friends with you. I
did love you, but that is all over now. I don't want to hurt you, but you
keep buying me more and more expensive things. How do I get through to you?
I don't want anything from you. I don't want you to buy me anything else. I
just want us to be friends. Don't you understand?"

Keith just stared at him, dumbfounded. He didn't say anything for a long
time. He looked away as a tear started to form at the corner of one
eye. After he quickly wiped it away, he said quietly, "I guess neither of
us gets it. Everything I do seems to make you mad. I buy my other friends
presents all of the time. That's just the way I am. They don't throw them
back in my face like you do. I was trying to do something nice for you, and
you act like I am your worst enemy. I can't take this anymore. I give
up. Go back to Robbie. I hope the two of you are happy together. Goodbye,
Phill," Keith said, as he turned on his heal and walked out, followed by
his bodyguard.

Phill just stared after him. "Keith, wait," he said. Keith stopped briefly,
but then shrugged his shoulders and kept walking. "Keith!" Phill yelled,
but he was gone.

Robbie came running over to see what was the matter. "Phill, what's wrong?"

"Well, Keith and his father bought Jimmy's Dad's studio, for us, I
think. Don't tell anyone else yet, especially Jimmy. I exploded, and told
Keith I didn't want him buying me things like that. I think I really hurt
him this time, Robbie, and I didn't want this to happen. I really feel bad
now," Phill said.

"Robbie put his arm around Phill's shoulders and said, "I am sorry to hear
that. I didn't want to see him get his feelings hurt, either. We wouldn't
be here today if it wasn't for him. Maybe you can call him later. I
wouldn't mind seeing you still be friends with him, but he made me crazy
jealous. I would like to get to know him, too, if he would just stop
kissing you all of the time."

Phill looked up at Robbie and smiled. "He didn't kiss me all of the time."

"Yeah, but he kissed you way to many times for me to be happy about
it. Come on, let's go back to where the rest of the band is. We still have
to plan what we are going to play tonight," Robbie said, as he led Phill
back towards the others.

Phill tried to have fun, like everyone else, but his mind kept going back
to the look Keith gave him right before he left. He knew he had hurt Keith
badly this time, which was what he was really trying not to do.

		       *****************************

Keith walked slowly back to his limo, trailed by the bodyguard. He had
conflicting thoughts running through his mind. Part of him was happy that
he and Phill were over. Part of him was sad. He really needed his cousins
right now, but he knew that they had Matt and Mike spending the weekend
with them.

He thought about calling and joining them. He knew Mark and Alex wouldn't
mind at all, but he just couldn't face all of their questions right
now. His parents weren't home. If he went back to his house, he would be
alone except for the servants.

Once he was back in his limo and on his way back home, he tried calling
several of his close friends, but this was Friday night. Everyone had
plans, or weren't at home. Not only had Keith been neglecting his cousins
since his obsession with Phill started, but his friends also. Keith made up
his mind that would change, as the limo slowly took him back towards
Beverly Hills. Keith started thinking about how his life would be so
different if he hadn't been born into such a wealthy family, as his mind
drifted along with the rapidly changing scenery.

		      ******************************

(Mark's turn)

"What do you think we should take with us? What we normally wear isn't
exactly up to Beverly Hills standards," Mike kidded.

"Well, we don't exactly have enough money to go out and buy new wardrobes,
now do we?" Matt asked. "I guess we will just have to take the best
looking stuff we have and hope we don't embarrass ourselves. Or, we can
sell the Honda Odessey Keith gave to the band and use the money to buy us
some really nice clothes."

"Well, that would work, but when it came time for us to hook up the trailer
to our old car, I think they would notice," Mike kidded back.

"Yeah, I guess we are stuck with what we have. I just hope they don't
mind. I have no idea what to expect. Mark and Alex have been really
friendly to us so far, and I hope we aren't getting in over our heads,"
Matt said.

"Hey, they haven't exactly asked us to marry them, you know. They just want
to be friends. What is wrong with that?" Mike asked.

"Nothing. Nothing at all. I just got the feeling from the looks in their
eyes that they might want more than friendship," Matt said.

"Well, we can only hope, can't we? I really like Alex. You seem to really
like Mark. Just don't decide to stay with them, OK?" Mike asked, as he came
up close to Matt and lightly kissed him on the mouth.

"I don't think that will be a problem. We might have some fun, though,"
Matt said as he kissed him back. They were both thinking that this might be
an interesting weekend.

		       *****************************

"We are killing them. BD is going crazy. He is wiping out two or three
players on every play. I could run for ten yards every down behind him and
his brother," Paul said.

"Yeah, this is over. We are up 35-10, and it looks like we will score again
soon. Let's get back and start warming up again. Looking at BD wiping out
all those other guys just makes me remember all the aches and pains from
three years ago," Ed said.

"Is BD his real name?" Jimmy asked, as they walked back to the auditorium.

"No, his real name is Dandy. I have no idea what kind of drugs his mother
was on when she named him, but when role was called in the ninth grade, he
would almost hide before he would answer the role. He said she liked the
song `Jim Dandy to the Rescue` and named him after that. He really hated
it, and started just calling himself `D`. It became `BD` for `Big Dandy`
until we had to take showers after gym. Then, it became `BD` for `Big
Dick`. You won't believe the size of it. Totally straight guys would openly
stare. I stared more than a few times," Isaiah said, laughing.

Ed started laughing. "Yeah, I stared a few times, too, after football
practice in the showers. They ought to bronze that thing."

"All I know is you had better not call him Dandy in front of him," Isaiah
said. "He goes crazy if you do."
