Passing through Stone

Chapter 7.

As I sat down on the couch Boris snuggled up to me again. Holding him close
I felt complete and the thought of somehow loosing him was just
unimaginable. I kissed him on the top of his head and took a deep breath
before I started to talk.

"Boris, you know that I love you very much, don't you?" He just
nodded. "And you do understand that I can't stay here forever, right?"
Again he just nodded. "I have been talking with someone and I think there
is a way so I can take you and Pavel and Pjotr with me back to my
country. Would you like that?" He turned around to face me and I saw his
eyes were wide and there was a hint of tears in them.

"You really want Pavel and Pjotr come too?"

My hand was combing through his hair reassuringly.

"Of course, we can't leave them here! They need you and I know you need
them too. And I already told you I really love all three of you."

Boris' arms were around my neck in a flash. He kissed me and I heard him
whisper "I love you" before he turned around to face his brothers.

I hadn't noticed they had stopped playing, instead they had been watching
me and Boris. Then Boris started talking to them, and the two boys were all
over us even before he had finished. Next thing I knew I was almost torn
apart for the second time that day.

"Please, Boris, we need to talk about this a bit more, ok?" I pleaded and
the three boys seemed to settle down a bit. But with the twins on either
side of me and Boris on my lap facing me, they did keep me surrounded.

"Well, the only way I can take all three of you with me, is to adopt
you. Do you know what that means?" Boris nodded vigorously. "Do Pavel and
Pjotr understand that when we do this, I will become their father?"

Boris translated and on both sides I had a boy under my arm nodding that
they understood.

Then the boys said something to Boris and I could see him starting to
think.

"Me your son too?" he asked.

"Yes, officially you will become my son too," I said smiling.

"Maybe you go look for Adam, yes! Find him too?" All three of them were
looking at me now expectantly.

"Yes, maybe we can try and find Adam too. But that will have to wait until
we are in my country, OK?" The boys nodded their agreement after Boris'
translation.

I continued to explain about the attorney and that he would be able to help
us. It was agreed that I should call him the next morning to make an
appointment. In all, the talk had gone a lot better than I had expected
and I was quite happy about the outcome. I should have realized that the
only thing that really bothered the boys was the absence of their oldest
brother. Seeing how close Boris and the twins were, I actually started
wondering about him myself. If he had indeed promised his brothers to come
for them, why hadn't he? Was there something or someone preventing him from
keeping his promise? I knew I had to find out, not just for Boris and the
twins sake, but also for my own.

Boris in the meantime had convinced his little brothers to resume the game
they had been playing before the interruption. With the couch to ourselves,
he once again snuggled up close to me. For some reason he needed to be held
and I readily complied. I told him that I would help him improve his
English and that it might be a good idea if he started to teach his
brothers some English too. He agreed and when he told the twins, I could
see they were both eager to learn.

The rest of the evening was spent with me explaining some of the basic
rules of the English language to Boris, which he picked up on quickly. The
twins were getting their first lessons in vocabulary, coming up with
Rumanian words and phrases and getting the English equivalent of it from
Boris. Occasionally I had to help out with pronunciation, which sometimes
made the boys laugh as they couldn't get it exactly right. And then there
were those words for which a simple translation doesn't really exist, but
that boys do want to know about. The multitude of possibilities to refer to
the male sexual organ was making both the twins and Boris giggle. It became
really hilarious when I tried to explain when you could or couldn't call it
a stiffy. With all the fun we had, time passed rapidly and without being
told, the twins got ready for bed. Both Boris and I got a goodnight hug and
kiss before we were left on our own.

Boris got me a beer and himself a soda before he got comfortable again,
wiggling his butt tight against my crotch. That generated an automatic
response from me, which made Boris sigh and wiggle some more. I told Boris
to stop it or we wouldn't have time to finish our drinks and I more sensed
than saw him smile. Boris held on to my left arm as it was wrapped around
him and laid his head back against my shoulder. The pure intimacy of the
situation felt almost overwhelming and intoxicated me more than the beer I
was drinking. I closed my eyes and I think we both could have fallen asleep
just sitting on the couch like that, being close.

We finished our drinks though and then Boris got up and started to put the
television and the lights out. I made my way to the bedroom, undressed and
jumped into bed where Boris joined me soon after. We made love and it
amazed me to realize just how tender we had both become in such short space
of time. The urgency of sexual need was gone and replaced by a deep
sensuousness that was overwhelming. When I drifted of to sleep with Boris
in my arms there was a feeling of utter completeness I had never felt
before.

The next morning, when I woke up, the bed still felt very warm, but I was
afraid to open my eyes, afraid that the bed might be empty again. With my
eyes still closed I moved around a bit, but I couldn't feel anything within
direct vicinity of me. As I slowly pried open my right eye I could see
Boris, he was wide awake, looking at me and smiling. He had me on my back
and was lying on top of me before I had time to get my left eye fully
open. When we finished our intense French kiss I told him that this was the
way I would like to wake up every day for the rest of my life. He agreed
and then got up, saying he was going to make coffee and tea.

I lingered in bed a little before I got up too and went into the living
room. It looked like the twins were still in bed, so I joined Boris in the
kitchen and started preparations for breakfast. We were just about ready
when the twins decided to show themselves and within no time most of the
food I had prepared was gone. If the boys were to come with me, I
definitely needed a bigger fridge at home, that much was clear. After we
had all showered and gotten dressed, I sat around on the couch for a while,
as Boris and the twins were playing games. It was good to see the three of
them play together.

At around ten I decided it was time to call the attorney's office and to my
surprise I was put through to the attorney himself straight away. It looked
like Hans had done a far better job than I had expected as the attorney
clearly had been filled in. He knew who I was and what I was calling for,
and said that I could come around at the office to discuss things at two
that same afternoon. I told him that I would bring the boys along and that
seemed like a good idea to him. Then we said our goodbyes and hung up.

I informed the boys about our appointment and it seemed to me like they
became a bit more fidgety than normal. Somehow I guessed that was to be
expected as they couldn't have had the best of experiences with any of the
countries official institutions. To them, the attorney was probably just
part of the establishment that was responsible for the way they had been
forced to live over the past three years. I asked Boris if he knew the
address and after looking at it, he told me it was only a fifteen minute
walk from the apartment. So around noon we had an early lunch, got ready
and left with plenty of time to spare.

The office was located in an older building that had clearly been
maintained very well. As we walked in the boys, who had been chattering all
the way over, became silent and huddled around me. After I had announced
myself at the reception desk, we were immediately escorted into a
relatively spacious office and I was told that the attorney would be with
us in a few minutes. I sat down on the couch that was against one of the
walls so the boys could join me, which they quickly did. I could understand
the discomfort they obviously felt; to them the whole office must have
looked pretty impressive.

Soon the attorney walked in, a man in his late fifties with one of those
faces that for some reason radiate friendship and trust. After I introduced
myself he went on to shake hands with the boys and they seemed to take a
liking to him. He told me and the boys to sit back on the couch and then
pulled up a chair for himself.

"These are three wonderful boys you have here and I understood that you are
willing to adopt them and give them a better life in Holland," he said to
me, while winking at the boys.

"Yes, I would like to take them with me as soon as possible, but I'm not
sure what needs to be done in order to make that possible."

"Well, first of all, would you happen to have any means of identification
for the boys?"

I produced copies I had made of the birth certificates and handed them over
to him.

"Would you happen to have the originals with you too? I just need to see
them in order to certify these copies for you."

Boris then gave him the originals and got them back after the attorney had
looked them over.

"These seem to be in order. Now I would like to have some piece of
identification of yourself if you please."

I handed him my passport and he made a copy of that, as I hadn't been able
to do so on the 3-in-1 machine. He then continued to ask me if I could
produce some evidence to show that I would be able to provide for the
boys. I told him that I could have my accountant back home draw something
up that he might be able to use and have it faxed to him. He said that
would be fine and that he could have a certified translation made of it
within a few hours.

To my surprise he told me that those were actually the only papers he would
really need and that all that was now left to discuss was the matter of
payment. He proceeded to explain to me that there were two payments
required; a wire transfer into his account to the equivalent of 5,000 Euros
and a cash payment of 45,000 Euros, 15,000 Euros for each of the boys. I
told him that would not be a problem and that he could have it probably as
soon as the next day. He told me that would be fine and that I should leave
a telephone number where I could be reached. I gave him the number at the
apartment and he wrote it down on the file holder that he had put the
copies in.

"Could you give an estimate as to when we will have to appear in court?" I
asked him, a bit surprised at how easy things were going. He just smiled at
me and said that we would not have to appear anywhere.

"If I have the payments in tomorrow, I should be able to have the adoptions
official by the end of next week at the latest," he declared, like it was a
matter of fact. "I will give you a call when I have received all the proper
documents from your embassy, so you can pick them up and take the boys home
with you."

He then excused himself, saying that he had some other appointments too and
that he hoped to see me again soon. We were then ushered out of the office
and were out on the street again in no time. While we slowly walked back to
the apartment I just thought about how totally weird the whole meeting had
gone. It was ridiculous, it couldn't be this easy to adopt three boys, it
just couldn't. In the back of my mind I was wondering if I was being conned
or was being set up in some way or other.
