Chapter 1

"My name is Gary Garrison. For the last twenty odd years I have been a
teacher and diving coach in a small Midwestern City in southern Ohio. I was
born in this city and spent all, but the years I was at college in this
City. I knew everyone and like most of these small cities everyone knew
everyone else. I had a lot of good friends and even a few enemies.

"I teach Math to grade 7, 8, and 9. A subject most kids I found hated, even
though they all knew they needed it. To my credit not a single student ever
failed math when I taught them. Not that I was an easy mark for them, but
because I could always find ways to make math both interesting and even fun
at times.

I was also a very good Diving coach at the local swim club. A few of the
kids I had taught even went on to win medals and trophies at college later
in life. Well it was my teaching diving that would get me in trouble.

"My father owned a large Hardware Store in the city and had only one other
love besides my mother. He loved flying. Along with the large house and
Hardware store, he also owned a Cessna 172. It was always kept in perfect
shape and he flew almost every Sunday through most of his life. He
continued even after I was born, but my love was for swimming and
diving. My love of teaching came from the same type of person I was now.
My Math and diving coach. He taught me Math could be more than just numbers
and equations. He also taught me that diving could even more fun without
yelling or cajoling students. A few words of encouragement went far farther
than any scolding.

The town I was born in grew rapidly as I grew up and my Dads business grew
too. He had always wanted me to take it over for him, but I had my eyes on
teaching. Teaching Math and diving as my mentor had taught me. Never one to
stop me, my Dad told me my life was always my own no matter what I did.

Shortly after graduating I headed for Ohio State. After getting my degree,
I headed back to the City of my birth. My old Math teacher and diving coach
was retiring and I had got his job.

Returning home also brought tragedy into my life. My Father, knowing I had
no interest in the Hardware Business had already lined up a buyer. He still
had that old Cessna 172, but had put a down payment on a new Cessna twin;
he and my mother would use to fly south each winter.

I had implored him to fly commercial, but he assured me the old 172 was in
perfect working condition. They almost made it. The plane went down just
two miles short of the runway at the Cessna Plant in Wichita Kansas. Both
were killed instantly.

The Funeral for my Mother and Father was probably the biggest in the cities
history. Both were very well known and liked.

With their death I inherited the store and house I was raised in. The sale
went through on the hardware Store and I sold the big house, wanting to
leave all the memories behind. I bought a small house, with a big back yard
on the outskirts of the City. Here I lived a quiet life.

During the week I devoted myself to Teaching Math and Diving. On weekends,
I worked on my other two loves. One was my Garden Railroad, that after
almost twenty years was very extensive. I always had kids over in the
summer to play along with me on it. The other was my love of radio control
Modeling. I had trucks, and dozers and graders as well as tanks. In the
winter, whenever there was a snowfall, the neighborhood kids would come
over and help me clear the snow with my models.

The batteries would never last long enough to clear all the snow, so as I
took the models inside they always finished my walks. Then I'd bring them
in for hot chocolate and they'd check out what I was working on next.

It was a really good and fulfilling life. My house was soon surrounded by
the City, but I never moved again.

Then Sam and his single Mom came into my life. I was a confirmed bachelor
and never had any intention of ever marrying. Sam was thirteen and next
year I would be teaching him Math. The day I met him and his Mother was
during the summer. I taught diving at the local recreation center in the
summer. Sam was interested in diving. His Mom was interested in something
else.

Even at 45 I was in good shape. I had a swimmers build. The day she brought
Sam to the pool, all I was wearing was my gym shorts and deck shoes. I had
a Speedo on under my Shorts. She made it very clear what her interest was
right from the Start. She prattled on about wanting to get to know me
better and even that maybe we could go for a drink later so she could learn
more about me. It didn't faze her at all when I told her I never dated any
of my students mothers period.

Sam I saw looked very uncomfortable as she had talked, but smiled when I
told her I didn't date students Mothers.

Finally I just turned away from her, put my hand on Sam's shoulder and told
him to go find a locker and change. Then I went back to my students. Sam
came out in black Speedos. His body was perfect I thought for diving.

"Okay Sam, show me what you can do. Pick any dive from any board or
platform."

Sam was a very good diver, but would need work to be perfect. I told him
that too and he smiled.

Over the weeks and months that followed, Sam steadily improved. I also
found out a lot about his Mother too. Some of it from Sam, who didn't
really care one way or the other. I found out his Mother would spread her
legs for almost anyone and knowing someday I might need it kept a list of
all her conquests. She seemed to be getting frustrated that I had no
interest in her at all.

I was getting frustrated with Sam. All his dives were picture perfect
except his back flips from the ten meter board. I just didn't know what was
wrong. Finally I walked to the far side of the pool to watch him
dive. Bingo! He over balanced and ended up diving before he was ready. He
need to push his hips forward of the edge to keep his balance until he was
ready.

I walked back and told him. He said he would try.

Well he didn't do it, so next time I followed him up as he climbed to the
top. I got him in position.

"Now move back over the edge. I won't let you fall." I held one hand on his
back.

Once he was in position, I put one hand on his chest to hold his chest up
straight and put my other hand on his butt and pushed his hips forward. He
smiled when I did it.

"Feel like you are going to fall Sam?"

"No Sir." I took my hands away.

"Now do the dive when you are ready."

Well the dive was so perfect I doubt anyone could have done it
better. After he was away from under the board I jumped in and swam over to
him.

That was perfect Sam. Now try it on your own."

When I looked her way, his mother was no where to be seen. Unusual, but I
didn't care.

Sam did three more perfect dives before I called the practice to a
halt. All the boys thanked me said they'd all see me next week.

That was not going to happen.

Monday morning before I even got to class the Principal called me to his
office.

"Gary, the board has ordered me to suspend you with pay until further
notice. Before you ask why, Mss Southave has told the board you sexually
assaulted her Son Samuel."

I stood there fuming.

"Did you Gary?"

"I'm going to pretend you didn't ask that John."

"Sorry Gary. You are right. What are you going to do?"

"What do you think? I'm going to hire a lawyer. By the time I finish with
her she'll wish she never heard of me or this city." I turned and walked
out.
