Rodie's Love: Chapter 16
By Snwdemon
It was noontime when Rodie awoke, he was about to get up and see
where Mark and Eric were when Mark came into the room.
"Hey sleepyhead," Mark said with a grin on his face, "it's about
time you woke up." Mark came in, sat on the bed next to Rodie, and hugged
him. He started to kiss him when Rodie turned his head away. "What's
wrong Rodie?" Mark asked with a concerned expression on his face.
"I'm sorry Mark; it's just that I'm still messed up from this
morning." Rodie said trying to explain to his friend.
"It's ok I guess, you want to talk about it?" Mark asked as he
released Rodie from his hug.
"I don't know if you'd understand Mark. Geez, I don't even
understand," Rodie said softly while looking towards the door. "I was
dreaming, and then he was there and it scared me. I haven't felt him for
so long, but the feeling was just like it felt before he left." Rodie said
then looking at Mark.
"I don't understand Rodie. Who is he? And what felt the same?"
Mark asked him trying to understand what he was talking about.
"I know, it's hard for me to explain. He is my daddy ok, and what
I meant when I said that the feeling was the same is how I can feel someone
here." Rodie explained while pointing to his head. "Everyone I can hear
in here is different ok. I can sense you, or Eric and the others. When I
wake up, I reach out automatically and sense everyone around me. Everyone
feels different to me though, sort of like how everyone looks different,
and that is how I recognize them. I have not sensed my dad since he left
over a year ago, but I sensed him this morning. Even after I woke up I
could still sense him here, but he was not here. Jim said that I had a bad
dream and that is what messed up my `Radar' as he calls it. But I'm not
sure, I just know that I'm scared because of what I'm feeling," Rodie said
in a worried voice.
"I understand now. You can feel him close to you but he is not
here though right?" Mark asked him.
"Yeah, and it scares me because he has bad thoughts all the time.
And he's angry all the time too. But why did I feel him like he was here
though? He doesn't even know where I am at, or about Jim and everything."
Rodie answered softly, and Mark watched him hug his legs and resting his
chin on his knees. Mark could see him trembling, and he could see the
worry in Rodie's face.
"I know we are safe here. Its just that I am scared of him is
all...he(sniff)...he said he would kill me if I ever told anyone what
really happened. I know that all of you wouldn't let that happen, but I
can't stop thinking about it." Rodie said in a trembling voice just barely
above a whisper. Mark moved closer to Rodie and hugged him close while
kissing his forehead. As he did that, tears started to slip down Rodie's
face.
"Come on now, don't cry, it will be ok Rodie. This place is like
Ft. Knox you know. I watched Jim as he locks up and sets the alarm. We
are safe here," Mark said while hugging Rodie tightly to him, and gently
wiping his tears away. "Hey, I know. What if you called your mom and
talked to her about it? Will that make you feel better?"
"Yeah, I think it would. Let's go find Jim ok," Rodie said to him.
He wiped his eyes, and then scooted over to the edge of the bed. Mark
helped him get dressed again, then brought him a wet washcloth for his
face, and then combed his hair. Rodie started to stand up when Mark
stopped him.
"No, I will carry you Bright Eyes, remember what happened this
morning?" Mark said reminding him of how his legs gave out. Rodie nodded
his head and then let Mark pick gently him up while he wrapped his arms and
legs around him. Once Mark had straightened up, Rodie kissed him on the
lips softly before smiling at him. Mark smiled back at him before carrying
him out to the living room.
As they came into the living room, everyone looked at him as Mark
handed him over to Jim. Rodie scooted back and got comfortable in Jim's
lap.
"Feeling better now my love?" Jim asked him after he got settled
in his lap.
"I guess so Jim," Rodie answered him. "I was wondering if I could
call my mom; if it is all right with you first?"
"Of course it is all right. Do you want to call her here or in my
room for more privacy?" Jim asked him with an understanding expression on
his face.
"Umm, I guess in your room Jim," Rodie answered him. Jim then
motioned for Mark over. He stood up with Rodie in his arms and had Mark
steady him once he was standing. He then carried Rodie back to his bedroom
and sat him down in his leather chair by his desk. He then placed the
phone on the desk in front of Rodie and turned to leave when Rodie stopped
him.
"No Jim, stay with me please?" Rodie asked him in a pleading tone
of voice. Jim nodded in agreement and sat down in one of the chairs
closest to the desk. Rodie then picked up the phone and dialed his home
number.
"Hello? Mom? Hi mommy, I really miss you here. When are you
coming home?" Rodie said into the phone.
"Hi honey, how are you feeling today?" Cathy asked him.
"I'm a lot better mommy, and Mark and Eric spent the weekend with
us here."
"That is wonderful, I am glad that you have two new friends now.
How is Jim and the others honey?"
"Jim is right here with me mom, and Marco, Eddie, and John are out
in the living room right now. You can talk to Jim if you like."
"No honey, I can talk to him later. I am glad you are feeling
better today, and I should be able to come home in a couple of days.
Things here are taking longer than we expected is all. Now what did you
want to talk to me about honey? That is why you called me isn't it?"
"Well, yeah mom, it is. Maybe I shouldn't have called though.
It's probably nothing anyways mom, and I don't want to bother you when your
busy."
"That's nonsense honey; I always have time for you when you need
me. Now what is wrong?"
"It's just that...umm...I don't know really what is wrong mommy. I
just feel like something is wrong but I cannot explain it."
"Well try, for me ok."
"Well I had a dream this morning and when I woke up I felt Daddy
here and it has me kinda scared right now. Stupid isn't it?"
"What? Are you sure it was your father? No honey it is not
stupid. Let me speak with Jim now, I will talk to you afterwards." Cathy
said in her business tone of voice. Rodie looked over at Jim and extended
the phone towards him.
"She wants to talk to you Jim. I think I made her mad though,"
Rodie said softly as Jim took the phone from him.
"Hello Cathy. What is the matter?" Jim said into the phone.
"What happened with him Jim? This could be important," Cathy told
him. Jim recounted the events of that morning about Rodie's dream and of
his reaction as soon as he woke up.
"I told him that the dream probably jammed his radar but I don't
think it helped too much to relieve his worrying." Jim told her.
"I doubt if it will Jim. Paul was released Saturday morning after
posting bond. I keep forgetting about how much stronger Rodie's abilities
are than my own. Remember, we did not tell him what I was going to do
until after we did it, but now I believe he needs to know now." Cathy
explained.
"I agree with you on that Cathy. Do you want to do it or should
I?" Jim asked her.
"No Jim, it is my responsibility. So put him back on the phone
please," Cathy said. Jim handed the phone back to Rodie.
"Tell me what mom?" Rodie asked her.
"I just did not want to worry you is all honey. I was going to
tell you, but I did not think you were well enough at the time. The reason
we came here was not to move our stuff only, but to file charges against
your father so he would be punished for what he did to you. He was
released yesterday after posting his bail bond, and you probably felt him
because of that." Cathy explained carefully to him.
"You did? Then he knows I...I to...told y...you mommy. He...he
said he wo...would kill me if...if I ever told on him... and...and they let
him go?" Rodie said trying to control his fear, but he felt the hot tears
as they ran down his face as he tried to get his breath. All of the sudden
the room was spinning, and Jim caught him just as the phone fell from his
hand.
"Rodie! RODIE!" Cathy screamed into the phone as she heard it
fall onto the desk.
"I got him Cathy, I think he fainted, I will be with you in a
moment. Marco! I need you now!" Jim yelled as he scooped Rodie up into
his arms and carefully laid him onto the bed. Rodie was really beginning
to hyperventilate severely when Marco, and John came into the room. Mark
and Eric followed them, but John told them firmly to go wait in the living
room until he came out. Mark was visibly worried as he ushered his brother
out of the room.
"What happened to him Jim? Is he having a seizure?" Marco asked
him as he took hold of Rodie's left hand that was clenched into a fist.
His small chest heaved as his arms and legs began to thrash about.
"No, he fainted from a panic attack I think, but he is
hyperventilating right now, and I think that is causing some sort of
seizure." Jim said to him as he grabbed Rodie's right arm and held it down
while John caught hold of his legs and pinned them.
"John get me a ziplock bag or paper lunch bag from the kitchen, and
a knife with a wooden handle and a cup of water. Quickly please," Marco
said as he placed his fingers on the side of Rodie's neck to take his
pulse. He could feel Rodie's pulse racing under his fingers. "Jim, I need
both of your medicines Neurotin and Xanax, what are their strengths by the
way?"
"300 mgs and 0.5 mgs; the largest and smallest bottles over there.
What are you planning to do?" Jim said to him as he pointed to the bottles
beside his bed.
"His panic attack has caused his system to overload on adrenaline.
If we don't slow is heart down, he will have a cardiac arrest." Marco told
him as john rushed into the room with the items he requested.
"Ok Jim, hold this bag over his nose and mouth. It sill reduce his
oxygen intake and slow his breathing some. It is a little dangerous but
I'm going to give him two of each pill. Then we need to call Dr. Wise
because we may need to take him to the emergency room." Marco explained as
he crushed up the Xanax and then opened the two capsules of Neurotin. He
then mixed them all into the cup of water and stirred. Jim was still
holding the paper bag over Rodie's nose and mouth, and they could see his
breathing begin to slow down.
"Ok, now you have to lift his head a bit so I can give him this.
Once I pour some in his mouth you need to tilt his head back, pinch his
nose, and hold his mouth closed in order for him to swallow. If you do not
it will cause him to choke on the liquid," Marco instructed to them. Jim
lifted Rodie's head and shoulders up while John placed pillows under him.
"Are you ready? Ok here goes," Marco said as he poured a small
amount into Rodie's mouth. Jim closed his mouth and pinched his nose while
John tilted Rodie's head back causing him to swallow reflexively. They
then repeated everything until the cup of medicine and water was consumed.
Marco then left the room, only to return after a few moments with his
stethoscope and blood pressure cuff. He then monitored Rodie's heart rate
and blood pressure for the next few minutes. He finally breathed a sigh of
relief before standing up again.
"Its working, now we need to call Dr. Wise because this is the best
I can do with my training. Where is the phone Jim?" Marco asked him after
looking at the empty cradle for the phone.
"Oh Jesus, I forgot all about Cathy, she has been listening to all of
this go on. She must be a wreck, use the cell to call Dr. Wise ok." Jim
explained as he retrieved the phone handset from the floor.
"Cathy? You still there," Jim said into the phone.
"Yes I'm still here Jim. Please tell me he is all right, and what
happened anyway," Cathy asked in a near frantic voice.
"He had a severe panic attack Cathy and passed out, and had some
sort of seizure. Marco gave him a heavy dose of medication and that seemed
to help him but we are calling Dr. Wise now just to be sure. Do you have
any idea what triggered this?" Jim asked her as he eased himself down into
his desk chair.
"No, I don't know what did it. Let me think a moment, He was
surprised, I think, when I told him that I had Paul arrested and that he
was released on bond. No, damn it, that was not it either, come on, think.
Oh I got it! He said right before everything happened, `he said he would
kill me if I told...and they let him go'. Oh God! You don't think he
believes that Paul would come after him do you?" Cathy said in a worried
voice.
"After what he did to Rodie, I can see why he believes that Cathy,
did he tell you that Paul had threatened to kill him when you two talked
that night in your camper?" Jim asked her.
"No Jim, he never told me that Paul had threatened to kill him. If
I had known that I would have made sure that he would not have been
released. Look, I am going to call the DA's office and tell them what
happened and why. Maybe they will revoke his bond and lock his sorry ass
up again. I did not know this would cause all of these problems with him.
Keep me informed about how he is doing, and Eddie and I will be back in the
morning. The rest of the stuff here can wait, so call me on my cell as
soon as Dr. Wise sees him ok." Cathy said to him.
"Sure thing Cathy, and if they don't lock him up again then you
tell Eddie that Marco and me are going hunting tonight. I am definitely in
the mood for blood right now." Jim told her with a dead serious voice. He
struggled to control his rage he felt building inside him at that moment.
He said goodbye to Cathy and hung up the phone just as he heard the buzzer
for the front gate. Marco went out to let Dr Wise in, and both returned
after a few minutes. Mike went right to Rodie and started to examine him
while asking all of them questions about what happened. He had Jim help
him strip off Rodie's shirt while they answered his questions. Jim
repeated what Cathy had told him that Rodie had said right before his
attack. Mike started to comment when Rodie moaned softly.
"Mommy?" Rodie mumbled softly as his eyes fluttered open. His
eyes were unfocused and glassy looking.
"Shh! Don't try to talk right now Bright Eyes, its me, Dr Mike
ok," Mike said softly to him as he brushed the stray lock of hair out of
his face.
"Jim? Where's Jim?" Rodie asked quietly.
"I am right here my love. Now just relax and do as Mike tells you
ok, I will be right here beside you." Jim said softly to him while holding
his right hand.
"I'm sorry, I did not mean to cause trouble Jim," Rodie said while
his eyes tried to focus on him.
"There is no need to be sorry my love. You did not cause us any
trouble. Now relax and let Mike check you out ok," Jim answered him as he
brushed away a tear from Rodie's face. Rodie nodded his head slightly and
relaxed as he was told to do, but he did not let go of Jim's hand either.
Mike continued his exam and Rodie drifted off to sleep again as the
medicine pushed him deeper into slumber. Mike finally motioned for Jim to
pick Rodie up and put him to bed. Jim picked him up and carried him to his
room where Marco turned down his bedding before Jim laid him onto the bed.
Once they had him tucked in, Jim kissed him on the forehead and they left
the room. As they came out they met up with Mike and John and they all
went out to the living room and sat down.
Mark was almost in tears when they came into the room and nearly
sprang out of his chair as they sat down.
"Is he alright?" Both Mark and Eric asked them as they sat down.
"Yes he is fine, but he will probably sleep through until morning.
He is sleeping now if you want to go stay with him. Just don't disturb him
boys," John told him as he hugged Mark and Eric to him. They both hugged
him back before heading off towards Rodie's room. Both of them looked
visibly relieved after hearing their father say that Rodie was all right.
"Do you think we should take him to the emergency room Mike?" Jim
asked his friend as he eased himself down into the recliner. Mike sat on
the loveseat next to him while Marco and John sat on the couch.
"No, I don't think so Jim. Rodie would need triple that dose to
cause him any harm other than making him sleep. However, just to be on the
safe side, I will stay and monitor him for a while. While it is rare for
me to see this type of reaction in a child, I have seen it before. That
old saying `being scared to death' is quite plausible with children like
Rodie. If what you said were true, then Rodie's belief that his father is
going to kill him would have triggered just such a reaction. I am glad
Marco remembered what to do, it might have just saved his life." Mike
explained to them once they were all seated.
"I was not sure that I remembered my training properly myself Mike.
I gave up that thought long before my injury ended my Olympic hopes. Can I
get any of you a drink? I know that I could sure use one right now," Marco
said to them all as he stood and motioned towards the bar.
"Do you have any Southern Comfort whiskey? If you do, I'll take
three fingers on the rocks." Mike replied to him.
"Ditto for me also Marco," Jim said with a half smile on his face.
"I prefer gin and tonic myself, here let me help you with those."
John replied before standing and following Marco to the bar.
"You know Mike; the funny thing about this is that Rodie felt his
dad this morning when he woke. It amazes me at just how powerful his
talents truly are. Cathy said that Paul was released on bond this morning,
yet Rodie could sense him like he was in the next room." Jim explained to
Mike. John and Marco returned with each of their drinks. Mike took his
and set it down before standing up.
"I'm just going to check on Rodie, I will be back in a moment,"
Mike said to them as he left the room. Jim lifted his glass towards John
and Marco before taking a drink. He then sat there in silence thinking to
himself, and going over the events earlier in his mind. For some reason he
felt uneasy as if he was missing something important. His thoughts were
broken when John asked him if anything was bothering him after noticing the
look on his face.
"Oh no, I am sorry John, it is just the way I am. No matter what
happens I am going to brood about it afterwards. I go over everything in
my mind to see if there was not something I missed or could do to prevent
it from happening. I am always listening to Eddie tell me to stop thinking
so much, but it is an old habit." Jim told him before taking another drink
from his glass. Before he could resume his brooding, Mike returned with a
grin on his face. He resumed his seat, and took a good drink out of his
cocktail before speaking.
"Nothing is the matter; Rodie is in a deep sleep right now. I
expect him to remain that way until morning. I also think that is the best
thing for him right now, I cannot stress enough the importance of rest for
him at this stage of his recovery. Normally it is hard enough for a
healthy person to recover from a ruptured appendix. However, he has all of
his emotional problems to deal with on top of the physical stress his body
is going through. As for my silly grin, I was just amused when I went into
his room. All three of the boys are asleep together. Both Eric and Mark
have Rodie in a protective hug, the only thing missing was Brutis. They
really do care a lot about that boy," Mike said with a chuckle and slight
shake of his head.
"Brutis! We forgot all about him," Jim said in unison with Marco.
Marco got up and went into the kitchen, and returned a few moments later
with Brutis. Brutis immediately started running around the coffee table at
full speed, only occasionally stopping to lick and drool on each of them.
Mike was laughing when Brutis hopped up onto the loveseat beside him and
proceeded to lick his arm while begging to be petted. Marco finally shooed
him into the back where Brutis jumped up into the bed. He carefully
sniffed each boy, pausing to lick Rodie's cheek before looking back at
Marco.
"Yes boy, he is sick. You take good care of him for me, and don't
wake them up." Marco said to him as he scratched his small ears. Brutis
circled a few times before laying down, and conveniently placing himself
between the door and his three charges. Marco smiled and left the room,
closing the door mostly but leaving it ajar some before returning to the
others.
"I am sorry about our fur child Mike, but I left him to guard the
kids while we continue our conversation." Marco said as he returned and
sat down again.
"It is all right Marco, I love dogs. My Belle is the complete
opposite from him though. She is old, and she is a full figured gal. Her
exercise comes from her sneaking into the fridge and stealing beer," Mike
said to them all making them all laugh. Belle was Mike's 15-year-old
Yellow Labrador who was definitely on the chunky side. Jim remembered
seeing Mike take her for short walks on the beach. It seemed that she had
to stop every 30 feet or so to rest, and if Mike threw a stick, she would
just stare at him and not move.
"Well Brutis is only a year and a half old, but he is an old caring
soul inside. Last Christmas he rescued an abandoned kitten, and treated it
like it was his own pup." Marco told them all. They continued to chat
amongst themselves for the next four hours, but Mike went to check on Rodie
every hour. When Mark came into the living room followed by Eric a short
time later, both were rubbing their eyes from just having woke up. It was
just after 5pm when Mark came out from the back and sat down in the easy
chair across from Jim's recliner. Eric came out and went directly to John,
sitting down and leaning against him. While Eric was still waking up, Jim
could see the redness and slight puffiness around mark's eyes. Whether
Eric knew it or not, Jim could see that the incident with Rodie had
affected Mark much more intimately.
"Well, it is getting around dinner time everyone. I don't think
any of us feels like cooking so how about if I run out and get a mess load
of Chinese food?" Jim asked everyone. While the others were on their
third drink, Jim was still nursing his original one.
"That sounds good to us Jim, Mike you are staying I presume?"
Marco asked him.
"Well if Jim just happens to bring back some Lemon Chicken, then I
am staying," Mike said as he finished the last of his cocktail.
"All right then, its settled. Marco you call in everyone's orders
while I go get dressed. Oh Mark, would you come along with me to help with
the food? I am kind of stiff right now," Jim said to them all.
"Sure Jim, let me get my shoes on ok," Mark replied before standing
up and following Jim back to his bedroom. As they entered the room, and
Jim closed the door, he turned and drew Mark into his arms.
"Are you ok Mark?" Jim asked him as he hugged him and kissed his
forehead.
"I think so Jim. I just feel so bad about what happened to Rodie
though," Mark said as he melted in Jim's embrace.
"Don't feel bad about that, nobody knew the secret that Rodie was
hiding about his father." Jim told him in a comforting tone of voice.
"You are wrong Jim, I did know. Rodie told me when he woke up, and
I told him to call his mom about it. It's my fault about what happened to
him because I should have spoken to you about it first." Mark said before
burying his face into Jim's chest and sobbing. Jim hugged him tighter and
kissed the top of his head before speaking to him.
"Look Mark, it still isn't your fault. If it is anyone's fault, it
is Cathy's fault and mine because we decided not to tell Rodie what she was
going to do about his father. None of us knew that he would react that way
when he found out about Cathy pressing charges against Paul. So do not
blame yourself Babe, because you did not cause any of this. The person to
blame is Paul, because he is the one who has put Rodie in this predicament
in the first place. Remember, it was he who hurt Rodie, and it was he who
has tortured Rodie by keeping this threat hanging over him all this time.
Rodie is still only 10 yrs old Babe, and he has to deal with these problems
that would be extremely hard for me to handle." Jim explained to him while
caressing Mark's back and shoulders.
Mark finally raised his head and Jim wiped his tears away. Mark then
stood on his tiptoes and kissed Jim before breaking their embrace. He went
into the bathroom to wash his face while Jim changed clothes. Once Mark
had put on his shoes, Jim grabbed his keys and headed for the garage with
Mark following him. He backed his BMW out of the garage, and headed for
Nags Head. Neither of them saw Paul as he slipped inside the house on the
far side of the darkened garage.
