Second Time Around: Chapter Forty-Five

Duval Street has to be one of the best-known streets in the tourist trade.
It extends from the Pier House Resort on the Gulf of Mexico across the
island to the Southernmost Hotel on the Atlantic Ocean. In between is
every kind of souvenir shop, museum restaurant and bar anyone could hope to
see. There is the Truman White House where President Harry Truman
preferred to vacation. Sloppy Joe's, Ernest Hemmingway's favorite watering
hole that holds its annual Hemmingway Look-A-Like Contest and toga parties.
Down the street from there is Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville.

When you enter Margaritaville, you see the sign over the door features a
large parrot. Inside, in the obligatory souvenir shop, you can find shirts
advertising the bar and Parrot Head. I heard a lot of tourist speculating
on exactly what that meant. Many thought it simply meant you had been to
Margaritaville, then someone would ask why they didn't name the bar Parrot
Head if that was the case. I happened to look up the phrase before leaving
home and knew that a Parrot Head was a member of the Parrot Head Club, a
non- profit charitable organization that focused on helping the less
fortunate. None of these destinations were on our minds as we left the
inn.

We left the inn around eight o'clock. Dinner was over and many of the
guests were gathering in the courtyard for a small social. The bar was
open, music was playing, it was hot, and the pool was open. David and I
excused ourselves for an evening of new experiences for me. We were back
to the big tourist area, only by now the tourists had taken their families
inside. The tourist area would be occupied by members of the Rainbow
community, out to enjoy the evening. I had heard many stories, seen some
clips on the internet, and had no real idea what we would see.

"I'll assume that you have a specific place in mind for tonight?" I asked.

"More like places," David answered. "They're close together and generally
known as the Bourbon Street Complex."

"I thought we were going to a place on Duval Street?"

"We are," he responded, smiling. "It's just called the Bourbon Street
Complex. One place is known as 801 Bourbon Street and the other is the
Bourbon St. Pub. At 801 there is a bar downstairs and a cabaret upstairs.
We'll be going upstairs. The only thing I'll caution you about is to be
prepared to see anything and everything."

"What are you talking about, anything and everything? Just how wild is
this place?"

"Depends on whose there and how much they've had to drink. It can get a
little raunchy and when it does, it's time to get out or join the orgy."

I didn't say anything else to David; I knew he had to be exaggerating the
orgy part. I hoped.

When we arrived there were no families in sight; at least, no families with
children. What was in sight is a little difficult to describe. I saw a
person who had to be naturally tall; I would guess at least six-five or a
little more. That same person was wearing heals that were every bit of
eight to ten inches. They wore a black, form-fitting skirt with ruffles
around the hem, and a sleeveless white blouse with horizontal red
pinstripes spaced about every three inches. The blouse had ruffles around
the neck line, supporting one or more strands of red beads that matched the
earrings and bracelets. There was also a 'ruby' ring that was either glass
or should have had at least six body guards standing around it.

I was viewing the individual from an angle. When we moved around for a
more straight- on view, the sight was even more interesting. The black
hair was obviously a wig, I hoped. The lipstick was a bright red, matching
the jewelry. The makeup was on so thick that there was no way for the
pores to breath. Black eyeliner accentuated very long eyelashes. This
person's dress was outlandish and I was sure that it was intentional. When
he, or she, turned around and I saw the black angel wings affixed to the
shoulders, I knew the craziness had to be intentional.

"David, please tell me that person is part of the show, standing out here
to attract people and move them inside."

"I think so," David replied, not sounding too sure. "If I'm not mistaken
that's Gabriella. He prefers to be referred to as 'she' when in costume.
I do know that she is part of some of the shows and other times just hangs
out here. She's definitely not shy about approaching people."

"Tell me this. Is that what they mean by 'flamer'?"

"She could be considered a flamer. A flamer is anyone that flaunts their
sexuality in any way that is considered extreme or outlandish. She would
most likely qualify." David was grinning from ear to ear.

We walked around outside for a few minutes while I looked at some of the
posters promoting the show upstairs. The posters advertised the 'world
famous' whoever, listing names such as Sushi, Darling, Gabriella,
LaFaYette, and Sable. All were drag queens of international renown. The
posters showed the performers being carried around the stage and through
the crowds, some in the streets, by men with muscular builds that Mike
would die for, and wearing the absolute minimum of pouches to avoid arrest.

When we walked into the bar David asked me if I wanted a drink. Well, it's
impolite to stand in someone's place of business and not at least be
holding a drink so I ordered a Killian's Red draft for each of us. We
found a semi-quiet place where we could stand and people watch.

The bar's patrons were of all ages, all stages of sobriety, and a lot of
them seemed to know David. Again, I became 'him'. I received more knuckle
bumps, slaps on my arms and shoulders, and vice-grip handshakes than I
could count. It was so noisy that I couldn't understand half the names
thrown out to me.

"You must come here quite a bit for this many people to know you," I
commented.

"Not really. Most of these people are permanent residents and members of
the rainbow community; everyone knows everyone else. Let's head upstairs,
the show will start soon. There may be a little surprise for you up
there."

When we got upstairs, the room was crowded. Given that a show was about to
begin, I would have thought that most people would be sitting in their
seats, anxiously waiting on the curtain to go up. These people were
milling around and literally hollering at one another across the room. The
hollering wasn't anger, it was good natured; it just wasn't what I was
accustomed to, nor what I expected.

We found seats and decided to just sit and wait for the show to begin.
Waiters moved around the room hawking drinks and beer. We ignored what was
going on around us except for the occasional greeting from someone that
knew David. Fortunately, I didn't have to endure much in the way of
backslapping, and nothing in the way of beer spilled in my lap. As the
show began, I got the little surprise David mentioned. All of the music
for the show was recorded by The Village People!

Some of the performers weren't bad. Some actually sang while others
lip-synced to The Village People. The whole thing looked quite a bit like
an act out of Cabaret right down to Joel Gray's scene where he's wearing
black pants with suspenders, no shirt, a stiff collar with bow tie, a black
bowler and horrendous makeup. The star of the show was Sushi and I
couldn't help but wonder if Sushi had excellent makeup or had implants for
breasts.

During the show, people in the audience would yell at the performers to
'swing it around' or 'pump it' or any number of other inferred vulgarities.
Some wanted to see someone's raw butt badly enough that one of the audience
jumped on stage and mooned everyone. That person was also escorted out of
the cabaret by two guys that had to be retied NFL players. At the end of
the show, things were getting a little wilder than I cared for. David and
I went outside.

"What did you think?" David asked.

I wasn't sure how to answer him. I didn't want to hurt his feelings, but I
really didn't care about going back inside either. The truth was that it
was an interesting experience and I didn't care if I never went back.

"Interesting," I said. He smiled.

"Let's walk down here to the pub. There's a little different show going on
here. We can leave anytime you want if you think it's getting to be a bit
much."

"David," I stopped walking, "how often did you come to these places?"

"I only came here if the person I was with wanted to come. I know a lot of
these people as part of the Rainbow community. I'll admit that in earlier
times, I performed on the stages a couple of times when I needed money bad
enough. Remember those dances I do for you once in a while? The audience
pays quite well. This next place does a lot of that sort of thing. It can
get a little rough, so be careful."

I wasn't too sure I liked the idea of him telling me that he danced at
these places a couple of times. I knew his background and rarely thought
about it, but still . . . The question now was what he thought about these
places. He stopped and turned to face me just before we walked into the
pub.

"The answer to the question running through your mind is that if I cared
for this sort of lifestyle I would have moved down here when John died
rather than finishing my college and being with you and the boys."

I almost felt like crawling in a hole.

"I'm here for two reasons," he continued, "one is to do a little research
and the other is to let you see what it's like in some gay communities.
Straight people don't want us around them. We're different, therefore we
have to be bad for society. The people you see here are venting their
frustrations and just trying to have a good time in the only ways that are
left for them."

"We don't have to live like this," I commented.

"No, we don't, but look around you. See that young man standing against
the light post? He's waiting for a john. He's waiting for someone to
proposition him so he can get enough money to help pay his rent and eat
tomorrow. Tomorrow night, come out here and he'll be right there.
Standing here I can spot at least six of them. I'd be willing to bet that
not one of them is of age; otherwise, he'd be inside hustling. They're
probably gay and have been thrown out by their families."

We walked inside, ordered a beer for each of us, and looked around. We had
about fifteen minutes before the show started so we found a quiet corner
and people watched. Some came over to greet David, but not as many as at
the last place. A couple asked him if he was going to dance tonight and
when he told them no they wanted to start reminiscing. David cut them off
by introducing me. That ended the reminiscing. Each time one of them
walked off I just looked at David and grinned.

We stood there watching the people. The age range was from barely of legal
age to old enough to be someone's grandpa. Some looked weather-worn while
others had manicured nails and callouses between their fingers from holding
a pen. Professionals and businessmen dressed in power suits during the
day, wild partiers at night.

On the way in I spotted posters advertising a "Best of" contest. Other
posters qualified it as Best Buns, Best Abs, Best Pecs, or Best __?__. It
didn't take much imagination to know the question mark most likely didn't
stand for 'smile'.

When the show started I quickly realized it was a dancing show, better
known by many as a strip show. The performers were a mix of professional
and amateur. The first performer was a pro who appeared to be in his
mid-twenties and obviously spent a lot of time in both the sun and the gym.
He had huge pecs, shoulders and arms that tapered to a narrow waist and
flat abdomen. His butt would definitely qualify as a bubble butt with
well-defined dimples. He moved everything around and paused often to let
customers stuff bills inside his bikini costume.

The second dancer, stripper was an amateur. He wore a tiger patterned
bikini and didn't waste much time getting down to nothing; I mean
absolutely nothing. The crowd was going nuts because this guy was standing
on stage naked bouncing his pecs. He turned around and started bouncing
his cheeks. Some idiot tried to reach up and push a bill in the guy's
crack; security quickly ended that. When the guy turned around, he stood
with his feet about shoulder's width apart and began swinging his pendulum.
The people thought it was great. I'd seen the same trick done just as
well, by a sixteen year old, in my own living room! With that thought I
knew what I needed to do and tapped David on the arm to follow me.

We stepped outside and scanned the area. Momentarily, David touched my arm
and pointed. He knew what I had on my mind without me saying anything. We
walked across the street.

"Hey."

I really had no idea what to say to this kid. My gut told me I should turn
him over my knee for putting himself in danger. My stronger emotions said
I wanted to find the kid's old man, for he didn't deserve the respect of
'dad' or 'father', and deck him. The kid looked us up and down, assessing
us. David was having trouble keeping a straight face; I wasn't completely
sure why.

"We're looking for a place to enjoy some delicacies and relax. Can you
recommend something?" David asked.

"Depends," the kid answered. "You lookin' for standard or gourmet stuff?"

There had to be a code being exchanged here and I thought I was getting
part of it. I was certainly interested in seeing where this was going and
decided to jump in.

"Depends," I interjected. "We prefer gourmet, but don't want to blow the
budget."

I noticed a bit of a 'humph' and a slight contemptuous look.

"Well, if we're working on a budget, I know where you can get single scoops
for around fifteen or a dog in quality buns for thirty. Of course, that's
straight to it with no prelims."

"Interesting," I replied, hopefully casually. "This place, how much for a
whole evening?"

"Well, given how late it is now, you could probably get the rest of the
night for about . . . sixty."

I had to smile. This kid was so full of it, but he worried me to death.
He was too close to my sons' ages.

"Let's stop the bullshit, okay? How much for the rest of the evening
. . . pure vanilla."

"Like I said, sixty . . . . . for the two of ya . . . .vanilla."

David stood to the side ready to split a seam.

"Kid, I'm gonna make you the best deal you'll hear tonight," I said,
pulling out my wallet. "But, first, I want you to answer one question for
me. How old are you?"

"Does it matter? I'm the best around here."

"It matters to me. We're not cops. How old?"

"Seventeen. Deal still on?"

"You homeless?"

"That's two questions. It'll cost ya another ten."

David found that very funny as I pulled out another ten.

"If you're askin if I got kicked out . . . . yeah. I share a place with
some buds."

As he spoke I pulled out the sixty. He looked at it, plus the additional
ten for the second question, and then surprised me even more with his
audacity.

"Plus the tip."

David lost it at that point and roared. I gave the kid another twenty.

"Where you wanna go?"

"No place."

That surprised him.

"I'm paying you to get away from here and go home or wherever it is you're
staying. You must give me your word that there will be no more hustling
for the rest of the night or give the money back."

"Don't you wanna go somewhere and have sex with me?"

"Get the wax out, kid," David spoke up. "He's serious. Go home, visit
with your buds, and be thankful that somebody wants to help you be safe for
one night. I've been there and know these nights don't come around often."

The kid looked at David, me, and down at the money. When he looked back up
at us, I would swear that I saw a tear in his eye.  He didn't say anything;
I don't think he could. He nodded and walked away.

David and I headed off in the opposite direction. He kept looking at me
and smiling.

"Did you want to go back to the bar?" I asked.

"Nope. I found out what I wanted to know. I've outgrown all that. I have
all I need."

He leaned into me and put his arm around my waist. I put my arm around his
waist and held him close as we strolled back. He looked up at me, grinned
and said one word.

"Softy."

                                           * * * *

The phone was ringing. At least, I thought I was the phone; it could have
been my head. I managed to force my eyes open enough to locate the phone.
Feeling like I was moving through some kind of haze, I cursed myself. I
knew better than to stay up until all hours of the night and then think I
could get up at my normal times, much less get up smiling and cheerful.

"Rick." It was Raymond. "I have some boys down here that think you should
have breakfast served in your room. I wouldn't let them come up without
calling."

I walked out onto the balcony and spotted Raymond standing in the
courtyard. He was surrounded by four boys looking up at my naked body
leaning on the balcony railing. All four boys were wearing grins that a
Cheshire cat would envy. I also saw the hot tub David and I were in last
night. Next to the tub were the clothes we were wearing last night. I
assumed clothing optional resorts were accustomed to finding such things on
occasion.  There was no need to ask why the boys were down there grinning;
the boat was sitting at the dock.

"You know it should be against the law for anyone to wake up and look as
happy as those boys do this early in the morning," I commented.

"Do you realize that it's after nine thirty?" Raymond asked.

I jumped away from the railing with that piece of information and nudged
the bed with my knee. The younger member of this duo seemed to be having
more trouble with the late hours than the old guy.

"Ray, give us about ten minutes and then send the boys up, okay? Oh, and
something with lots of caffeine would be appreciated."

Someone had to be watching a clock because exactly ten minutes and ten
seconds after I hung up the phone there was a knock on our door. The knock
was accompanied by several boyish sounding giggles. David decided to be
cute with the boys and opened the door, naked. None of them even gave him
a second look. I was just walking out of the bathroom with only a towel
wrapped around my waist, which I had put on only because I knew the boys
were coming, still drying my hair. The boys grinned at both of us and
walked out to the balcony with our breakfast.

Each boy carried a part of the breakfast. Keith had the main tray, Donnie
carried a large bowl containing a variety of fruit, Ali carried the coffee,
my immediate priority, and Jay came in last with orange juice. When
everything was set on the table the boys stepped back and stood in a line.
Jay stepped up and, after making sure he saw my naked body from top to
bottom, held his arms out, and turned in a slow circle for everyone to
admire. Then he looked at me and said,

"'Propriate?"

Jay was dressed in a pair of cutoffs that extended about four inches below
the crotch. They were small enough that they clung to his small waist
without being too tight. They were split up the side seams about two
inches. He was bare-chested with his t-shirt sticking out of his back
pocket. His nicely tanned feet were protected from the sharp coquina
common to the area by a pair of sandals. When Jay saw me looking at him he
folded the waistband of his shorts down so I could see the waistband on his
white underwear. I just smiled and gave him a thumbs-up.

"Appropriate," I told him. "You are a very handsome young man. Jay,
number one diver."

"Uh-uh. I don't wanna be a young man. Ali is a young man and he's got
pubes. He can't dive no more. I just wanna be like you said and not Sweet
Jesus."

"Well, I think you've made a very good start. Are you boys hungry?"

"We ate already," Keith answered immediately.

"Well, we haven't. You have to understand that us older people have to get
some sleep once in a while. So, if you boys don't mind, David and I will
have our breakfast and then figure out what we're going to do today."

I knew the boys would get nervous. They looked at one another and I saw
shoulders shrugged. They were trying to figure out who was going to say
something. David wouldn't lift his eyes from his plate. Then, I felt this
pair of hands wrap around my arm and a warm body lean against me. I looked
at him.

"Would you like a piece of fruit?" I asked.

Jay nodded and opened his mouth for me to feed him. He didn't even hint
that he was going to feed himself. I was beginning to spoil this boy.

"You said you was gonna take us to the wreck and dive today."

Even if I hadn't remembered what we promised the boys and I wasn't teasing
them, there's no way anyone could have said no to that pleading, and
disappointed, voice.

I whispered in his ear, "We are, but let's keep that our secret, okay?
We'll let the other boys sweat it."

He just smiled and opened his mouth for more fruit.

                                           * * * *

Raymond had the kitchen prepare us a few sandwiches and snacks. It was
after ten thirty by the time we pulled out from the dock. Having to move
at idle speed due to the congestion, Raymond said it would take us close to
two hours to get to the wreck. Once we cleared the harbor, I pointed the
bow on the bearings that Raymond had given us. Keith was supposed to know
where to go. However, given that we had his boyfriend and other friends on
board, I felt a little more comfortable letting the boys be boys and David
and I would handle the boat.

We had been out only a few minutes and cleared the traffic. Basically, it
was us and the wide open ocean. I heard David laugh and comment,

"That didn't take long."

I looked around to see what he was talking about and spotted Jay, in all
his natural beauty.

"It's okay, right, Mr. Rick? We're goin' divin'." Jay was looking for
confirmation.

"I not only think it's alright, Jay, I think it's 'propriate." From the
corner of my eye I spotted David joining him. "Where's the other boys?"

Jay pointed towards the bow. I had to get off my seat and lean over the
console to see the forward deck. They lay in all their natural beauty.
All three boys lay on their stomachs displaying what looked to a perfectly
matched set of three bubble butts. All three boys had no tan lines. Jay
wasn't the only one that liked to run around au natural. These kids were
as bad, or good, as my boys back home.

Jay laughed and stepped around in front of me. The next thing I knew he
was trying to unfasten my shorts. I started to say something, but decided
to let him go. When he had them unfastened he didn't just let them drop,
he had to pull them down. He stood and stepped back with the most
interesting look on his face. Then he looked up at me with pure innocence.

"Ooooooooooo. You got a BEEEG one! Can you make it swing like that guy at
the pub?"

That question was a shock.

"How do you know what the guy at the pub does? You are waaaay too young to
be hanging around there."

"Don't be mad at me." His face scrunched up. "I was'n there; promise.
Ali told me 'bout it."

I saw his face and backed up fast.

"I'll talk to your brother later. I tell you what, you wanna help me drive
this boat?"

"Can I?"

I held my hands out and he raised his arms immediately so I could pick him
up. I set him on my right thigh so he could see over the console and told
him to point the boat so the compass read where I had it set. Like any
kid, his mind quickly forgot about my private parts and the pendulum swing,
focusing on driving the boat.

We ran smoothly for a while and were soon approaching our target. Ahead
and a little off to port were the dive markers identifying the location of
the wreck. Jay started getting a little excited and was soon giggling. I
thought his giggling was a little much for the occasion.

"What's got your giggle box running so hard?"

Jay didn't say anything, he pointed towards the bow. When I looked over
the console I saw that Ali was now lying on his back. Donnie and Keith
were on either side of him. It looked as though both older boys were each
working on a nipple. Keith was playing with the boy's rocks, while Donnie
was slowly jacking him. Ali's squirming said he was really enjoying
everything they were doing to him.

I got David's attention and motioned for him to look. When he saw the boys
he laughed and pointed to the horn button. I looked and saw the air horns
were mounted just over the boys' heads. This opportunity was just too good
to let it slip by. We had reached our destination and I had already slowed
the boat to a crawl. I shifted into neutral and then, on signal, David hit
the air horn and I shifted the boat into reverse. All three boys jumped as
though they were spring loaded. Between them jumping and the boat shifting
to reverse, Donnie and Keith went over the rail. Ali sat in shock. Jay
was screaming with laughter.

David and I both went to the rail after I shifted the boat back to neutral
and killed the engine, to make sure the boys were okay. Jay was already at
the railing, pointing at the boys and laughing. Both boys looked as though
they weren't too sure how to react, then they also began to laugh.

"You think that's real funny, don't you?"

Jay just looked up at me and nodded his head while he laughed and pointed
to the boys. I picked up Jay and threw him towards the two boys. Now the
two older boys were laughing hard.

We all dove in and swam around a little. I did a little free diving and
was reminded how uncomfortable salt water can be on the eyes if you aren't
accustomed to it. After about an hour, we took a break for some lunch and
a rest. We then snorkeled. I had seen many tropical aquariums around, but
nothing could ever match the aquarium Nature created. The water was warm
and clear. The variety of fish, remarkable.

The boys dove and swam around. They made me think of seal pups at play.
They were as at home in the water as on the land. I wished I had a camera.
Four naked boys in all their natural beauty playing in Nature's playground.

Three hours after arriving, we pulled anchor and headed for port. All of
us were tired, but it was a very relaxing tired for David and me. Donnie,
Keith and Ali headed into the cabin and crashed on the sofas. Jay climbed
up and straddled my lap, facing me. David drove the boat.

"I think we may have some hero worship going on here," David commented.

I just looked at him and smiled as I held the boy.

"He just wants someone to tell him they care. He's a beautiful boy."

I sat there holding Jay, letting my head rest on top of his. I couldn't
wait to get back, take a refreshing shower, maybe a cold beer, and a short
nap. David tapped my shoulder. When I looked up he handed me a cell
phone, mouthing to me that it was Mike.

"Heeeey, Michael."

"Hey, Dad. What'sup?"

"You havin' a good time?"

"Yeah. I learned a lot. But, Dad, you would'n believe the nudist place.
It's wild! We oughtta live in nudist place."

"I thought we did," I responded and then told him what I was feeling.
"Miss you, kiddo."

"Me, too, Dad . . . .Dad, love you."
