Foreword: I must apologize to all of you for taking so long to post the
new chapter. As I explained to those who e-mailed me, my computer almost
exploded while trying to connect a CD writer (the computer being old and
all) in order to transfer a huge amount of mp3's. I finally had to update
my PC (and I've been avoiding it for a long time). Now that everything is
back in order (although I still keep my fingers crossed), I'm back to my
usual schedule. Sorry for taking so long.

Chapter 27: New Beginnings.

Almost September. Almost two weeks for Mike's birthday. For some reason,
he wanted me to be home for lunch. I still couldn't believe how lucky I
had been for those last few months. Fridays at Steven's had become the
highpoint of my week. It was the day we got to ourselves, no Mike, no
Jay, just the two of us. Friday nights were just for us and nobody else.
Even after all this months, I still felt lucky. My mother could have
stopped me from going over to his house, but she never did. Keeping that
in mind, I always made sure to be home for lunch on Saturday. It was the
only day of the week we got to have lunch together as a family, since it
was the only day that Dad would be around at that time of the day.

I couldn't understand why Mike asked me to be there, I always was, but
there was an urgent tone in his voice when he told me. I assured him that
I was going to be there as usual, but he never told me why he needed me
there. It's not like I would be changing my routine all of a sudden.
Perhaps he had something planned for later, but truth be told, I wasn't
all that concerned with it. He asked me just before I left for Steven's
that Friday, and I certainly had other things in mind at the moment. But
as I got down from the bus, I felt a a little more curious. What was he
going to say or do?

After I arrived home, I went to the studio, knowing that most of my
family would be there, or at least my younger brothers, watching some
cartoons or something like that. The thing was, that the only one there,
was Mike.

"Where are the others?" I asked him.

"Sleepover at Jay's, won't be back until later" Mike told me.

"Ok, what's going on?"

"Meaning?"

"You know, you obviously got rid of them, and I bet I know who helped
you!"

"So?"

"Come on, tell me!"

"Tell you what?"

"Tell me why you made sure that I was going to be here for lunch and why
the other two are not here"

"You'll find out soon enough"

"Come on, what is this all about?"

"Trust me"

And there was a certain seriousness in those two words that made me shut
up. Whatever it was, it seemed serious enough for my brother to ask me to
trust him. We never used those words before, we would have never used
them some time before that, neither would we have trusted the other. It
was different then, and I knew that if he needed me, I would be there for
him.

"Ok, I trust you, but you better tell me soon!"

"Thanks, bro'. That means a lot"

"You sound pretty serious, should I start worrying about something?"

"Don't think so, but I want you there with me"

"Want me where?"

"I want to talk to Mom and Dad about something"

"About what? You're not going to tell them, are you?"

"No! Furthest thing from my mind, I promise you have nothing to worry
about."

"That's not so easy when you're acting so secretive. Can't you give me a
hint?"

"Lunch should be ready soon, you'll hear all about it then. Just that
I'll feel a lot better knowing you are there for me"

"Does it have to do with your grades and school?"

"Nope, but if you want to know, it has to do with my birthday"

"Really? What about it?"

"You'll see."

"Aw, come on! What is it already! You keep saying it's nothing serious
but you're sure making a big deal out of it!"

"Let's go to the kitchen, the sooner I get this out, the better"

"Then it must be a lot more serious than you're telling me"

"Not so serious, but it means a lot to me"

Never in my life had I seen my brother acting so serious about anything.
Truth be told, he wasn't well known for taking anything serious, not even
school. What could have him so worked up? What did it have to do with his
birthday? Whatever it was that was going to happen, it was going to
happen soon enough. Mom was finishing our lunch as we walked into the
kitchen, she seemed her usual self.

"Hi, mom!" I said before kissing her on the cheek.

"Hi, son. Had a good time?"

"Yeah, we went to the mall and watched "X-MEN", Steven's a huge fan of
the comic"

"Was it good?" She asked me.

"Yeah, great movie!"

"I'm glad you had a good time. Why don't you go say hi to your dad and
tell him that lunch is ready?"

"I'm on it. Smells great, by the way" I told her before going upstairs.

"Mike, why don't you help me with this?"

"Sure, mom"

"And while you're at it, why don't you tell me what's been bothering you
all morning?"

"I prefer to wait until we are all together."

"Even your brother?"

"Especially Sean"

"Sure, we'll wait for them."

"Especially Sean" Sarah kept thinking over and over again. Whatever it
was that his eldest son was going to tell them, it seemed serious enough.
But wanting his brother there...

Mike seemed to be pretty worked up, and he kept quiet during the whole
thing, but as soon as we were all finished he was ready to start with
whatever he was going to say.

"I need to talk with you both." Mike announced, looking at both of our
parents.

"What is it?" Our Dad asked.

By then, we were all looking at Mike, neither of us knowing what this was
all about.

"This won't be easy, so I need you to keep quiet until I'm done. I'll be
glad to hear whatever it is you want to say, but please let me finish."

"It sounds pretty serious, son."

"It's nothing to be worried about, but it is very important to me."

"We're listening"

"Well, you know how... I thought this would be easier..." He looked at me
for some reason, and took a deep breath. "My birthday is only a couple of
weeks away, and I was thinking, well, you know, I'll be eighteen and..."

"Take your time, son." Dad said.

"Let me go back a little. I was talking to Steven..." The moment he
mentioned Steven my eyes opened wide and I was very curious to find out
what my boyfriend had to do with all of this. "... and he was telling me
about how he's looking for an apartment, and how difficult it was to find
something nice and close to his job and all, and that he was looking for
a roommate so it wouldn't be so expensive and all of that..."

"And this relates to your birthday, how?" Dad asked.

"Well, I was thinking about grandma's flat, like in telling him about it,
and that maybe..." He took a deep breath, "... maybe I could be his
roommate"

Surprise, surprise! I knew I was surprised about that, but after looking
at mum I could tell that she was even more shocked than me. Dad, on the
other hand, seemed pretty cool about it.

"Just like that? You want to give him the apartment and go live with him?
There are a lot of things that you are not taking into account" Dad told
him without loosing his temper. Mom was quiet but I think it was due to
the shock.

"I am thinking about them!"

"Are you sure? Or are you expecting him to pay for everything? Who's
gonna take care of the food, bills and all of that?"

"Both of us could. I haven't told him anything about this, but if he
accepts, I want to move in with him. I wouldn't be a free-loader."

"You would have to get a job"

"I already got one"

"What? Since when?" Mom cried, I could see she was beginning to loose
control. I was still unable to believe everything Mike was saying.

"I had a couple of interviews, they offered me a job at MusicWorld"

"Really? When were you planning on telling us?"

"I'm telling you now. It's a good job, and it pays well."

"What about school? I don't want you wasting your time."

"Mom! School will be over in a few months, I am doing great, my grades
are probably the best ever and I don't plan to screw it up. I will work
in the afternoons, I will move on my own, I'm just asking you for help. I
don't know for sure if Steven will be willing to accept my offer, but you
have to understand that this is what I want."

"I understand, son. I do." Dad seemed pretty cool with the whole thing.
"Why don't you boys go upstairs and let me talk about this with your Mom?
We'll talk some more later."

"Sure,but..." Mike tried to speak.

"Mike, I've heard what you have to say, and I know how you feel, but
you're not getting an answer until your mother and I have talked it
through. When we have something to say, we'll talk again. Now, leave us
alone, I'm sure we'll come up with something."

I couldn't believe what had happened, and I was still speechless. We both
went into Mike's room. He looked like he had seen a ghost.

"I can't believe what just happened!" I told him. "Why didn't you say
something?"

"Like what? I have been planning this for some time, but I couldn't say
anything until Mom and Dad said it was ok. You think they'll let me?"

"Don't know. Maybe they will, you are doing great at school, and I know
that that is Mom's main concern. I can't believe you've got a job! And at
MusicWorld of all places!"

"Yeah, who would have thought that, right?"

"I can't believe you've been keeping this secret. Does Jay know about
it?"

"Of course not, he would have told Steven in no time. You think he will
want for us to be roommates?"

"I don't see why not."

"If everything works out, you'll be able to see each other more often."

"So will you and Jay!" I teased him.

"Yeah, I know" He sighed.

"Come on, you should be happier! This could be so cool! I mean, grandma's
flat is just six blocks away, if they agree with you, you could move over
there in no time!"

"If they say yes"

"Come on, I'm sure that it will work out fine. Mom will complain a
little, but I bet Dad is pretty impressed with you and your job. You
think they'll let you borrow CD's from work? Maybe we can copy them?!"

"Jeez, I haven't even started and you're already trying to get me fired!"
He smiled a little.

"Just kidding. I'm sure that you'll get away with it"

"Thanks, bro'. Thanks for being there for me."

"It's not like you gave me any other choice. But you are welcome" I had
to smile at him. My big brother.

We stayed in his room for the rest of the afternoon. We talked about his
new job, which turned up to be the MusicWorld by Blockbuster, only five
blocks away. It had opened only a couple of weeks before and Mike was
pretty nervous about starting the next Monday. The pay was good, and he
would work all the afternoon, right after school. To say that I was
impressed with Mike would be an understatement. I admired him for what he
was doing.

They knocked on the door before coming in. We both froze right where we
were. I know what I was thinking, and can only imagine what was going
through Mike's mind. That could have been the end of all the hard
planning and hopes he had. Mom and Dad looked at him.

"So?" Mike asked.

"Tell you what, let's see how you do with your job this week, see if you
can handle school and your new job first. If you are certain that you'll
be able to keep up with both things, then we won't have a problem with
it. I'm very proud of you, son. I'm very glad that you have decided to
take responsibility for yourself and I will be very glad to help you."

"Really? What about you?" He asked Mom, and I was sure he was about to
jump in the air.

"I agree with your father. You've come a long way, you've done great this
year at school and if you are sure that this is what you really want, I'm
all for it. Of course, you'll have to talk with Steven about it first.
And both of us would like to talk to both of you first."

Mike went right to them and hugged them both at the same time. He was
happy, of course, and their support meant a lot to him. I can't begin to
describe how amazing it all felt. The possibilities and changes where
beginning to form in my head, but I wasn't really thinking at the time.

"I think you should call Steven and let him know, and if it works out,
we'd like you to invite him for dinner tomorrow night. That way, we can
both talk to you and work out the details. How does that sound?" Dad
asked him.

"We were all going out tonight, I'll talk to him as soon as I get there."

"Great. I'm really happy for you, son. Good luck with your new job."

"Remember, this will always be your home whenever you need anything" Mom
told him secretly but I could hear her.

"Thanks Mom, I know" He hugged her and kissed her.

As soon as they left, Mike turned to me and we were both smiling from ear
to ear. We both hugged each other and started jumping and laughing like
crazy. We kept at it until we couldn't do it any more. I know it meant a
lot more to Mike than just what he was getting. It meant that Dad trusted
him, that they considered him to be responsible, but most of all, that
they believed in him. I think I never felt so proud of my brother, if
ever. He had planned and thought about it and he was now getting what he
wanted. I guess he has matured a lot over the last year.

As I left his room to get changed, I found Mom standing outside of my
room.

"Hi, mom." Just like that, she hugged me tightly. I couldn't figure why.
"Everything ok?"

"Yes, Sean. I guess so. You must be really happy for your brother,
right?"

"Of course. It's just so great."

"You'll be able to see him any time you want"

"Yeah, he'll only be a few blocks away..."

When we broke the hug and she left to her room, I was still standing
outside my room. For some strange reason, just for a second, I felt like
she wasn't talking about Mike. I shook my head and dismissed the thought,
but not as quickly as it had come. Could she know that I wasn't talking
about Mike either?

Around seven, we were both ready to leave. As we walked the three blocks
to the avenue, neither of us could drop the subject of the moving. We
were so thrilled and we couldn't wait to tell Steven about it. We decided
to take a cab, knowing that no one would be in the mood to go anywhere
after we told them our big news. We both looked at Mike's future
apartment when we went by it and giggled like children. The trip to
Steven's couldn't have felt any longer. The need to tell our boyfriends
almost too painful to wait.

As soon as Steven opened the door, we made our way inside, probably with
the stupidest grin's ever. As soon as the door was closed, I grabbed him
by the back of his head with both hands, and gave him a furious kiss.

"Someone's in a good mood!" My gorgeous boyfriend said.

"You bet! We have great news!"

A new direction for the boys. What things will come out of this? Will
they be good or bad? You'll have to wait and see (only not as long as you
waited to read this). As always, I appreciate all your comments at:
