Subject: The Captive Boy, Chapter 3

Foreword: This story was a pure fiction. I have to admit that it was not
my best writing, but was an important one for me. The main story line was
developed since I was about 10 years old, and had been developed for more
than 20 years. Now, in my middle 30s, I finally wrote it down, added many
other elements to form a complete story. I do hope that you like it. I'd
like to get your feedback, about your thoughts of this story, or any other
things.

BTW, I hope that my poor English will not eliminate your fun of reading
this story...

The Captive Boy - Chapter 3

Joey did not turn hostile with Ann and George. He knew that they two raped
Johnny, but they still had many missions, Joey had to take the overall
situation into account. So he just took Johnny everywhere with him.
Johnny did not respond anything to Joey, just put on a poker face.

Joey gave Johnny a small handgun.

"We may need your skill to snipe, " said Joey. "and let you protect
yourself."

Johnny took the gun, loaded it, locked the safety catch, and put the gun in
his shorts. He still did not respond to Joey's words.

Joey took Johnny with him on his duty too. They planned to assault another
captive concentration camp in the middle area of Leer. He taught Johnny
how to find the enemy's track, where enemies moved to, and how to set traps
on the way enemies must go. Johnny started to attend the Leer inner war at
5 years old, but he was mostly arranged to snipe. The things Joey taught
were mostly fresh for him, so he kept those things in his mind. However,
he still did not respond anything to Joey.

Joey did not give up. Every night he always sat beside Johnny under the
tree, telling Johnny about his own experiences. He told Johnny that he
used to be in the special forces of United States, and attended the Vietnam
War. Now he was a leader of a mercenary army. They were hired to execute
some missions in Africa.

"The environment was much worse in Vietnam." said Joey. "They were all
very good at guerrilla tactics. They took advantage of favorable terrain
to set traps and ambush. The way to set traps I taught you were mostly
from them, and I learned those ways because many of our fellows were
trapped into them."

Joey's fellows started to tease Joey.

"Joey, did you fall in love with Pokerface?"

Joey just smiled.

"Pokerface" was named by Joey's fellows. They were all very surprised to
know that this weird Asian boy was prisoned in the notorious Linbus Jail by
Leer government. And, Johnny was so silent after being rescued. No any
response to anyone, even never smiled or cried, just kept a poker face.
Nobody knew where Johnny came from, why he was here, and why Joey treated
him so nice. Joey did not explain anything to his fellows, and nobody knew
that the reason why he treated Johnny so nice was that Johnny made him
think of Ming, the Vietnam boy he owed his life to...

Joey took Johnny everywhere with him. He also tried to inquire about
Johnny's fellows. He took Johnny to where he last saw Jack, but Jack had
escaped to somewhere else. He inquired about other guys, but could not get
anything useful. Finally, somebody told him that there were some people in
Anka Town, which was in the north of Leer, planning another attack.

"Anka?" Joey felt a bit surprised. "Wow, they are so bold. It's not very
far from the captical Leer."

Thinking for a while, Joey patted Johnny's shoulder. "We won't go north
recently, but we will have a chance."

Johnny still didn't respond.

They went back to the base, and saw everyone stood still very nervously.

"What's wrong?" asked Joey.

"Snake." a guy named Sam replied. "Just behind Ann. Look."

Joey saw Ann standing still there, and on a branch of a tree behind Ann was
a median size green snake, ready to attack. He knew that once Ann moved,
the snake would attack immediately. He could not tell which kind of snake
was it, but according to the shape and the pattern of the snake, he could
say it must be a poisonous snake. He didn't have any serum. If Ann was
bitten, he could not save Ann's life.

"Do you know which kind of snake is it?" asked Joey.

"Mamba, maybe." said Sam. "But I'm not sure. I just can say that it must
be poisonous."

Joey nervously thought about how to save Ann. At the same time, he heard
everybody exclaimed.

The snake started to attack, jumped to Ann in a very fast speed. Suddenly,
everyone heard a gun shot, and watched the snake flying along a parabolic
curve, and fell onto the ground, died.

Everybody was dumbfounded for a few seconds, and then started to find where
the gun shot from. They saw that a small handgun was in Johnny's hands,
and smoke floated from the gun's barrel. After a while, Johnny locked the
safety catch, and put the gun back to his shorts. Everyone started to
applause.

"Good shot, pokerface!"

"Wow, it's amazing. Why didn't you show us your skill before, pokerface?"

"Pokerface, where did you learn to shot?"

Ann knew that his life was saved. He felt relieved, and knelt down on the
ground. All other people lifted Johnny up their heads, still applaused.
Joey watched Johnny's face. Johnny still kept a poker face, but his eyes
were active and smiling. He smiled watching Johnny being thrown up and
down. Then he walked to Ann, squatted, and watched Ann's face.

After a few seconds, Joey said seriously: "He could choose not to save your
life, Ann. I hope you would regret what you did to him."

Ann lowered his head. Joey stood up and left Ann.
