Part 1 - The Introduction.

It was mid-September and the school year was only about 2
weeks old. Steven was still 12 years old and just started
Grade 8 (his final year of junior high school). September
was always an interesting month, as Steven would be having
new classmates (although he often kept to the same group of
friends). However this year was different. When Steven and
I went to the local 7-11 for a slurpee he made mention of
his "new" friend Derek in his class. Having been a part of
Steven's life for the past many years, I've seen friends
come and go, however he kept on talking about this Derek
kid. I asked Steven what was so different about Derek
compared to his other friends. It turns out that Derek was
his first real friend who was the same age as Steven (most
of Steven's friends lived near his house and attended other
schools or were a year or two younger than Steven.). Steven
also said that Derek was "really cool" and popular with the
girls. This perked my interest and I told Steven that we
would have to include Derek with some of our future outings.
I was genuinely interested in who Steven hung around with,
as kids can be a positive (or negative) influence on each
other at that age.

About a week or so later, I came home from work an hour
early to tend to some financial matters at my bank. As I
pulled into my driveway I noticed two bikes resting in the
middle of my usual parking place. I couldn't see anyone
around, but recognized one of the bikes to be Steven's. I
unlocked the front door to my house, and I guess the noise
of my car pulling into the driveway alerted my unexpected
guests. From my backyard, emerged Steven with another boy.

I said, "Hi, Steven. How's it going? What brings you on
over?"

Steven replied that they had early dismissal from school and
that he wanted to show his friend Derek where I lived and my
hot tub.

I said that was cool. I extended my hand to Derek and
introduced myself to him. At first glance Derek appeared to
be just a normal Grade 8 boy. Soon after I became awestruck
by his deep blue eyes and handsome smile. Derek appeared
rather shy and awkward at first but glanced in my direction
and shook my hand, offering up a short "Hello."

To help set the context for this story, let me briefly
describe Derek. He was somewhat short for his age (standing
only about 5'4" tall), with deep blue eyes, dark brown hair
that was short on the sides and styled up top. His smile
would melt your heart. He had pearl white teeth and was
just beginning to show the first traces of puberty on his
young face. Derek had a slight frame, and probably only
weighed about 90 lbs. (soaking wet). He was a rather skinny
kid but looked somewhat athletic. Back to the story now.

I invited Steven and Derek into my house for a cold cola.
Without hesitation, they went bursting into my house. Steven
was very excited to showoff some of the cool things I had at
the house, such as the PS2, big screen tv, etc. Steven
treated my place like his home away from home and knew where
just about to find anything in the house. I quickly dropped
off my briefcase and then told the boys that unfortunately I
had to rush off to an appointment at the bank, but they
would be more than welcome to stay at my place until I got
back. I didn't expect to me more than half an hour, so the
boys both said they would stay over and play some PS2 until
I returned. I left for the bank and returned about 20
minutes later only to find Steven's bike left in my
driveway. When I entered the house, Steven told me that
Derek contacted his parents and was told he had to be home
for dinner.

Sadly, that was the last I saw of Derek that day, but as it
turns out, I wouldn't have to wait too much longer until our
next encounter.
