Chapter 1

I'm not sure when I knew I had to have him, but I know when I first noticed
him. I had just moved to the west coast having taken a job at a firm that
specialized in geographical analysis, my area of expertise. I had found a
nice 2 bedroom condo/townhouse and was looking around the community.

I had always gone to church as long as I could remember and I guess the
habit, if you could call it that, never left me. So anyway I came across
this little church one Sunday morning. It was actually the Sunday morning
of the weekend that I had moved into my new digs. I had gone for a walk,
it overcast and drizzly. It was the kind of Sunday morning that brings to
mind Johnny Cash's classic "Sunday Morning Sidewalk". In that frame of
mind I saw a small church and some folks going in. It was of a
denomination similar to what I was attending back home so on a whim I
decided to go in.

As I say it was a small place. I was greeted at the door and told to sit
anywhere. I like to sit at the back (I always say `you have to go to
church early if you want a good back seat') I was early enough and was
enjoying the organ music and watching the parishioners come in. Some
nodded at me, some came over and shook my hand. All in all it was quite a
friendly place.

Presently I heard the "rumble" of running feet and around the door came two
young lads, about 16 I guessed, right at me before they noticed me and came
to what could be classified as a screeching stop. I was clearly sitting in
their pew. I grinned at them, it was intended as a smile but the situation
was so funny that the grin was the best I could do to stifle my laugh. The
usher at the door, an older man was not so kind. He burst out laughing,
which caused me to laugh and the boys to put on a couple of very sheepish
looks.

"Your spot?" I asked innocently

The usher still laughing nodded for the boys "But first come first serve
here, they know that."

The one lad by now having regained his composure smiled at me and said
"We'll sit somewhere else"

He was the one! A good looking lad. He was tall, had darkish hair, brown
eyes, no acne to speak of. From the looks if it he was, while not muscle
bound, nicely put together. Clearly he had gotten beyond that gangly
puberty stage.

Of course I didn't know how he would affect me at that point, I just
noticed his good looks. And of course the amusement of the moment was
still fresh.

"Thank you" I said "You guys can join me if you like there is lots of
room." I added. There was lots of room as I was sitting well in to the
corner.

He smiled at me again. "No that's alright" and they turned and found
another seat.

The service was good and by time I left later to go back home I was feeling
a whole lot better than Johnny Cash's song had made me feel earlier.

I am alone. I always had been. Even as a child I was a bit of a loner.
But lately I had gotten tired of friends and relatives asking me when I was
going to find a girl and get married. I was tired the dates and contacts
that a well meaning mother and aunts were prone to arrange for me. So when
this job had come up on the opposite side of the country... I jumped at it.
"Free at last! Free at last!"

The thing is there is something that I could never tell my very religious,
evangelical Christian parents, family and friends. At least not and expect
to stay in my home town. Don't get me wrong, my parents are wonderful
loving kind people. But this is something that I don't think they would or
could ever understand and accept. I am gay. That is why at the age of 31
I am still unmarried. But now I am at least free to live my life out from
under the scrutiny of my parents and everyone that has ever known me.

Anyway... to get back to the story.

Over the next few weeks the boys got used to me sitting in that spot and
since I was usually there before them they just automatically sat somewhere
else. Jake, the one that smiled at me the first week would often say hi to
me though. He seemed to have the shy smile that was saying something to me
that I couldn't put my finger on ... or maybe it was a subconscious wishful
thinking on my part. I know that I got to look forward to seeing him every
Sunday.

One Sunday morning as I enter the sanctuary to go to my preferred location
I was greeted by a grinning young Jake. I had noticed that the usher had
been smiling a bit more than usual that morning as I came in but had not
thought much of it until I saw Jake sitting there.

I burst out laughing and so did Jake and the usher. "Funny guy" I said. I
turned to go somewhere else but Jake called me back. "You can join me if
you like, Paul isn't here this morning."

"Well thank you" I said. I offered my hand, "I'm Allen by the way, and you
are Jake is that right?"

"Yes sir" he replied taking my hand. He moved over allowing me to sit
down.

He was quite an engaging young man. He chatted away, asking me where I was
from, why I had moved here. He was quite interested that I worked in GIS
(Geographic Information Systems). His High School Geography Class offered
a session in GIS. He then pumped me for information because he had a
project due and was having some problems. The next thing I knew I was
being invited to come over that afternoon to give him a hand.

"You might want to check with your folks first." I laughed

He grinned "Yeah I guess I should huh?"

He was gone in a flash over to who I presume was his mother. She looked
over at me, smiled and nodded at him. Then she came back with him to where
I was sitting and introduced herself. "Hi I'm Ruth Burton, I understand
you have been enlisted to help Jake with his homework. You will come home
with us for lunch then"

"Well thank you very much. I hope I can help. I am working in GIS and I
might be able to give him some pointers..." I looked over her shoulder at
Jake "But I will not do the homework for you..." I wagged a finger at him.

We all laughed. She went back to her seat and he sat back down with me
again and the service started.

After the service I walked out with Jake who told his mother he would go
with me to show me how to get to their place.

Ruth for all her fussing that there was not much to offer me, put out a
marvellous spread. I found out over lunch that she was recently widowed.
Jake's Dad who had been a deacon in the church had died in a car accident
the previous fall. They were not destitute but it had not been an easy
winter for them.

All in all it was a nice lunch and visit. After we finished I offered to
help with the clean up but that was turned down. Instead I was whisked off
by Jake to his room to have a look at the project he was working on.

He pulled up a chair beside his in front of the computer. We sat knee to
knee working for about an hour. He didn't really need a lot of help, but I
was able to give him a few ideas on how to tweek some of his work.

His mother had just left having brought us some tea and muffins. I said I
knew of a site where he could get some scripts and downloads that would
help him in his project. He brought up a browser and what should popup but
a window showing two guys, one sucking the other off.

Jake froze , well we both did. I said "Wow!" It was sort of under my
breath but I know he heard me.

I looked over at Jake who was still staring at the screen. His face was
terror stricken all white with large red blotches. There were large beads
of sweat on his upper lip.

He grabbed the mouse and closed the window only to have another popup
"I.. I Oh man I don't know how to stop them... I..." He gasped his voice
panic stricken.

I put my hand on top of his and the mouse and directed the pointer to a
spot that allowed him to block the popups. He clicked it and shut down the
popups, and closed the last window.

"It's ok Jake" I said softly. My hand was still on top of his. "Sometimes
these popups just seem to come out of nowhere"

I took the mouse from him and I went to the site I wanted to go to
originally and showed him how to get the scripts and how to download them.
We had to activate the popups for that site I showed him how to do that. I
also showed him how to restrict what popups would show up.

He sat totally still and didn't say a word. I knew he was terrified.

"Jake?" I said quietly. "Have you ever heard the saying "What happens in
Los Vegas stays in Los Vegas? or something like that?"

He nodded, still looking quite distressed.

"Well this room as far as I am concerned today is Los Vegas. Also if there
is something that you want to talk to someone about but you are afraid of
it getting out, you can talk to me Jake."

He looked at me. I think there were tears welling up in his eyes. "It's
just that..." he trailed off

I put my hand on his shoulder. "I think I have probably seen and heard it
all Jake. I don't think there is anything that is going to shock me. I
promise that I will keep your confidence."

He nodded. We sat in silence as we finished the tea and muffins.

I got up. " I guess I should be heading out. I think you should ace that
project. I'll see you next Sunday?"

He nodded and smiled "Thanks Allen, Thank you very much"

As I left I added a bit of advice "If you get yourself a jump drive, you
can get a "portable internet access that you can use on the jump drive.
That way you can keep those other sites only for your eyes. Then clean up
your internet history and files on your main internet"

He looked at me blushes and nodded. "thanks"
