Chapter 2
Decisions

"What was that all about, Paulo? Why were we dismissed like school
children? I'm peed off!"

"I truthfully can't answer that, Ton. But I suspect it has to do with the
legality issue about you're living with us as your guardians, when you have
a Grandmother, that should have that responsibility. Now don't let your ass
get tight on me about this, Ton. I trust Ricardo fully...and I want you to
give him all of your support on this, babe. You know your Pae is one of the
smartest men around and he can think on his feet and remain there still
standing when the smoke clears. I assure you, he will figure out a way so
we will have not one minute of separation except when he is off to work. By
the way, I'm working on a way to present to him that we can stay at
whichever port he is working out of during the two months he is scheduled to
work in his field. Don't press me, at the moment on all of the details, as
I haven`t worked them out in my head yet. But if you and I present the idea
to him, once we have a plan worked out, that will seem feasible to him, I'll
bet he would jump on the idea like a fly on a piece of shit. Come on fasten
your seat belt, let's stop at a sandwiched shop and get something to eat and
a cafezinho."

"OK, but Paulo, can't you give me an idea of what you are thinking of, Come
on, this affects me too, you know? Please Paulo, don't be an asshole," he
said giving Paulo a fake punch on his right arm.

"You little shit, I ought to beat your ass for talking to me like that, but
you'd like it too much, knowing you." They both giggled enjoying their
camaraderie and ease with each other.

"What's with you and Beto? You have the "hots" for him or something?"

"Huh? What are you talking about, Ton?"

"Come on, Paulo. Do you think I'm blind? Stupid? You think I was on the
streets all of those months without seeing what goes on between some guys
and girls too, for that matter? Hell, Paulo I could tell you stories about
what I know that would make even you blush."

"I agree you aren't blind. You may need glasses at times, though," Paulo
laughed, "I certainly know you're not stupid. Not with the way you've been
working on your schoolwork. You'll be ready to take exams for high level
soon, if you stay committed and concentrate, dickhead. By next year
you'll be speaking English like a sailor home for the holidays. Probably
never get you to shut up. Actually, Ton, I am so damned proud of you. And
Pae beams with pride, when I show him your work. "That's my boy," he says.
"He is smart, isn't he?" Ha! If only he knew what a smart ass you are, he'd
shit." They both roared in laughter. Paulo had to remind himself he was at
the wheel. Each time they would glance over at each other, it would start
another round of rousing laughter and giggling.

They pulled into a space to park near a sandwich shop, got out and sat at
one of the outside tables, so they could talk together without interruptions
yet watch people stroll by. Brazilians love to people watch. Its like a
religious experience without the confession. The moço took their order and
went off to have it filled.

"I'll drive on the way back," Toninho offered.

"The hell you say. Ton, Pae would shit a brick, if he knew I let you do
some of the driving up to Fortaleza. Sooner or later I'm going to have to
confess that I did allow you to do that. He'd probably be so goddamned
pissed off at me for letting you do that...and without insurance for you as a
driver.... he'll go nearly into cardiac arrest. So don't press me on this
one, Ton. No, don't say another word about it."

"Bu but... I'm a good driver."

"No! Ton. No buts about it. Good driver or no. Your Pae would have my ass
strung up for the ants to get, if he ever found out I allowed you to drive.
So put a sock in your mouth and shut up about it. I mean it, Ton."

"You have to admit I'm a good driver."

"Jesus, Joseph & Mary, Mother of God. Ton, I may have to kill you one of
these days `cause you know how to drive me to drink, at times. Just shut up
about that. You are not going to drive Herbie here, in Porto Alegre, while
your Pae is working out a way for the good of us all. Why in the hell, do
you try to queer something up, at a time like this?"

"I want you to admit I'm a good driver. Say it. Admit it."

Paulo sighed in exasperation. "Okay, Ton. You're a good fucking driver.
Now will you shut up about that? You are such a cocksucker at times."

"I know it," Toninho said, "because I'm good at it. Come on, admit that
I'm a good cocksucker. Tell me. Admit it that."

Paulo didn't notice that Toninho had a huge grin on his face, while egging
him on.
He looked up and realized that he was being had. They both roared out loud,
as passersby looked at them in wonder about the silly inane way those two
handsome young men were acting. The waiter brought their order out on a
large tray.

"Which of you gentlemen ordered the chicken salad sandwich and Coca Cola?"

"The excellent cocksucker over there ordered that, I ordered the hamburguesa
com fritas." Paulo served back at Toninho. Toninho sat stunned; his mouth
dropped wide open in astonishment. He looked into Paulo's face and saw an
evil looking smile with slitted eyes glaring back at him. They both roared
out in loud gregarious guffaws

The waiter walked away sniggering about the crudeness of the joke. He might
use that one, on one of his friends, he thought.

Toninho leaned over toward Paulo and whispered sotto voce, "I may never be
able to show my face in this town again."

"Good, this city will be safe from the likes of you -- you cocksucker,"
Paulo smile and giggled, "Pay back is hell isn't it, Ton?" Toninho had to
smile and nod his head in agreement. Another lesson learned at his own
expense, he thought.

*********

"Ricardo, you propose that I come to Rio de Janeiro for each two months that
you must be away to work, so I can be with Toninho and Paulo during your
absence, knowing full well that I have just had one breast removed due to
cancer, is that what you suggest?"

"Yes Miss Flávia, and the boys can accompany you to an Oncologist for your
appointments or checkups. I will pay all of your expenses including
medications. Oh, I failed to mention that we have a swimming pool, which
would be beneficial for your exercises. The office will be converted back
to a bedroom for you. I feel your only real task while there would be to
see that Toninho and Paulo take advantage of your cooking skills, if
evidence of the feijoada that you set before me is an indication of the fare
you prepare. Toninho is a teenager and while he is doing his schoolwork or
studies is always munching on some type of snack food. You will be there to
curtail that practice which may be habit forming. I have nothing against
snack foods, but I don't like to see it ingested daily nor every time I
glance in to see how he is doing. It's bothersome to me. Not to him, of
course."

"What about your sleeping arrangements, Ricardo?

"I have a large bedroom that would accommodate another bed with little
problem. The lads will sleep there, and we can make arrangements to put the
office equipment in the living room. All we would need to do is a bit of
furniture rearrangement. You shall have a monthly allowance to use as you
wish. I will purchase clothes for you when and if you need them."

"You've thought of everything that might sway a poor old woman, haven't you
Ricardo?"

"Beg your pardon, Ma'am?"

"You didn't answer my question, Ricardo. What about your sleeping
arrangements?"

"Miss Flávia, I did answer that question, didn't I?"

"No you didn't, Ricardo. You skirted around the question. I shall be
blunt. Old people have accepted the right to be blunt. If I were to accept
your proposition, when I am gone for the one or two months, where will you
sleep, Ricardo? And with whom? You seem somewhat stunned; have I shocked
you?"

"Frankly, yes, you have Miss Flávia. I, umm, I, I will be sleeping with
Toninho."

"I see. How long has this been going on?"

"Since I met with him. When I brought him to my home."

"Is Paulo aware of this arrangement? Does he approve of it?"

"Yes Ma'am he does."

"The three of you are, what do we call it? Gai?"

I tried to swallow. My mouth was so dry, that there was nothing to swallow.
OMG, this has fallen apart, it's not going well at all, I thought.

"Did you assume I might be a foolish lady, Ricardo?

[Oh Lord, she's rubbing my face in it, how can I stand this? Where are my
boys?]

"I don't operate on assumptions, Ma'am, it isn't productive."

[OK, the demand to leave her home and the promise to contact the Civil
Authorities are next. How can I protect Toninho? I will plead guilty and
beg the court for leniency. I am broken and soon to become `um prisioneiro'
in one of their dirty filthy calabouços.]

"I accept your offer. When will the arrangements begin? How much time do I
have to prepare to leave this rathole?

[What? I've gone mad. I can feel my face burning, sweating; my ears have a
ringing sensation. "Prepare to leave? Rathole"? Oh my God, am I to have
no time to make my goodbyes to my loves. I want to die. How could I do
this to Toninho? This will devastate him. Paulo. Paulo will be there to
care for him. Ah thank God, for my Paulo. They will have to move from the
apartment. They couldn't afford the lease payments. They will be together
though. Will they be able to visit me? Probably not. A Pedophile is not
allowed visits with the child with whom he abused. Perhaps Paulo will be
able to see me. Keep me informed of Toninho's progress, his health. I want
to melt. I am a dead man, with no gravestone.]

"Ricardo? Did you hear me?

"Hmmmh? Yes? I'm sorry, I didn't hear what you said."

"I said I accept. How much time do I have to make arrangements to go Rio?

"You accept? That we are gay?"

"Yes, I can accept that. I saw it in your eyes when you looked at each
other. But when I saw it in Paulo's eyes too. That's what confused me.
Three of you, together. Most unusual. I had never heard of three men
together. I dare not ask, but will one day I suppose. How do you have
relations with three men? I cannot imagine anything except a tangle of arms
and legs. It must be a generational thing."

"You will join our family?" [If only I could stop the rushing sound of
blood cascading through my head. The heat and the hollow echoes.]

"A family you say. Yes, I imagine it would be a family, then wouldn't it?
Would I be the matriarch? Yes, I suppose I would be, wouldn't I? Ricardo
are you well? You seem flushed, dear boy. Is there anything I can do?"

"Uhh, No Ma'am. I had a touch of dizziness for several moments. I'll be
quite all right. Thank you. Would you object if you closed this house as
soon as possible. I'll leave Toninho with you to assist you. Then he can
escort his Gran to Rio to your new home and new family. Once the house is
closed, you can ship what you want to bring along and I'll have airline
tickets for you both to fly to Rio. Either myself or Paulo will pick you up
and get you settled in as soon as possible, if you are agreeable."

"Ricardo, I couldn't be more agreeable to anything I can think of. A new
life, new surroundings in Rio de Janeiro, and I'll try so hard to make up
for the nasty life Toninho had to endure. I am excited again after many,
many, years. Thank you so much Ricardo. Toninho couldn't have better role
models than you two young men. Minha familia gai."
