The Innocents Part 4: Paulo and Beto
By Richard Dean
Chapter 3
After an hour and a half of walking they came upon a building pointed out by
Gloria known as My Brother's Keeper. Tentatively they approached the
building whereupon Gloria pointed out the plaque mounted on the wall that
proclaimed the co-founders The Lady of the Candles, Flavia Carpazetti d'
Sousa and Antonio Ricardo Dean (Carpazetti d'Sousa).
"Put your hands on the plaque children that you will receive the blessings
of your kin and good luck in your future opportunities."
Gloria covered their hands with hers so she could feel the warmth of them
emanate within her own. She handed a thick envelope to Javier with her last
instructions, "After I have walked away and you can no longer see me, walk
into this building holding your sister's hand. Stand still within the entry
and wait for someone to come up to you and ask what you need. Tell them you
wish to see the Director of My Brother's Keeper. You have a letter enclosed
in the envelope. You will release it only within the Director's hands.
Continue holding your sister's hand and follow whom ever greets you. Wait
until the Director himself appears. You must ask him if he is the Director
of the establishment. If he replies in the affirmative only then are you
empowered to hand the envelope to him. Answer no further questions until he
has read the letter and documents contained within. I suspect that he will
become excited and ask you further questions. You may then proceed to
answer all of his questions truthfully and implicitly. Do you understand,
Javier?"
With trepidation, Javier replied, "I understand MaMae." Jaw and chin
quivering fighting from displaying tears in public he asked, "Will we never
see you again, MaMae?"
"I can't answer that my darling. Perhaps in years in the future we may be
united. I don't know. Give your Mae a kiss and a super hug my children.
We mustn't delay any longer."
Both children rushed to her kissing, crying and hugging her. Pulling away
Gloria straightened upright, turned about and walked away from them tears
streaming down her face. What the future held for herself and her remaining
family she could not discern. She smiled through wet tears knowing she had
done one last gesture that may well be meaningful to assuage her guilt.
Within minutes she knew the children would have lost sight of her. Turning
a corner she was lost within the vision of Javier her handsome son and Clara
her soon to be beautiful daughter. Giggling to herself she thought of a
warm fire and a draught of a sleeping powder to ease us into a long
sleep...comfort at last!
"I, I, I'm scared Javinho." She stuttered sniffling.
"I am too, Clara. Are we ready? Let's go."
Taking Clara's hand in his he pulled the door open, peered inside and pulled
her inside with him. Standing in the foyer, holding his sister's hand and
in the other he held an envelope. They stood anticipating concerned
thoughts with only the clothes on their backs. They had no possessions to
take into this new sojourn. Several tense minutes passed when someone
walked past the foyer. They heard the footfalls stop and seemingly reversed
and appeared again looking astounded to see two children holding/grasping
hands.
"Are you children here to get something to eat?"
Javier responded, "We've come to see the Director."
"What? The director you say?"
"Yes Senhor, the director."
"That's quite impossible. He's very busy at this time of the day. Is that
envelope for the director?"
"Yes Senhor."
"If you'll give me the envelope, I'll see that the director gets it."
The inquisitor received neither a reply nor the envelope. The children
remained standing holding each other's hand.
"Give me the envelope please, I'll see that the director gets it."
"From our hand to the director's hand, Senhor."
Stunned the inquisitor looked from the envelope to the cheeky lad standing
in front of him. What an impertinent response is that? , He thought.
"I told you the director is busy at this time of the day and will see no
one. I'll give him the envelope personally."
"We cannot release the envelope except into the director's hand personally,
Senhor. I apologize."
"Very well. It sounds mysterious to me, but I'll inquire the director to
see if he'll admit you. Wait here please."
"Thank you, Senhor."
As the inquisitor strode away he looked back at the stone-faced youngsters
standing in the foyer. How curious, he thought. Arriving at the closed
door he knocked rapidly twice and entered the room.
"What's up Paulinho? You seem distressed."
"I don't understand what's happening here, Beto, but I encountered two young
people standing in the foyer. I asked if they wanted to be fed, but the
young man replied he had to see the Director. I noted he had an envelope
clutched within his hand. I asked him if the envelope was for the director.
He affirmed it. I told him I would bring you the envelope, but he made a
strange statement. `From our hand to the hand of the Director.' I asked
him once more and he replied again with `from our hand to the hand of the
Director.' I don't get it, but do you want to see these youngsters and find
out what is in the envelope?"
"Hmmm, yes sure. I'll see him...them."
"Be back shortly with the inigma."
Paulo strode back to the foyer and asked them both to follow him. The
director would see them. The young couple followed Paulo to the closed
door. He rapped twice and opened the door and motioned the children to
enter.
"Young Sir, young lady...the Director"
"Thank you Paulinho. Yes children how may I help you?"
"We have an envelope for you, Senhor." Javier said handing the letter to
Beto.
"Thank you. May I open it?"
"Yes Senhor."
Using a letter opener Beto slit the envelope and noted a letter and
accompanying documents within. A few moments after beginning to read the
letter Beto would stop reading and stare at the young man. He resumed
reading and glanced at the lad again. Shaking his head in confusion he
returned to the contents of the letter. When he had completed his reading
he sat back in his chair and suggested to Paulo that he escort the children
to the kitchen area so that they could be fed. While they were eating he
asked Paulo to return to him as they had to have a serious discussion.
Wordlessly he motioned the children to follow him. They exited the office
and he escorted the children to the kitchen. Entering he asked the cook to
feed the children their fill. He would be back in a bit to attend to them.
He did an abrupt about face and retraced his steps to Beto's office.
"What is it Beto? The letter?"
"Does that young man seem familiar to you Paulinho?"
"I can't say that he does. Why?"
"Perhaps if you read this letter and the supporting documents you'll see
what I'm getting at."
"Okay, I'm game." Paulo said as he accepted the letter, envelope and
documents. Within moments he gasped in shock as he finished the first
paragraph. "What is this a joke? A ploy to get money?"
"Read the entire letter dearest."
Paulo collapsed in a chair as he continued to read the letter. Without
saying words he would look up with tears flowing down his cheeks. The
letter fell to the floor as he grasped his head in his hands and wept
openly. "Oh dear GOD!" he wailed.
