The Pilot - Part III

I opened the door and handed the EMT the evidence that Shane in fact had
peed. The paramedic rode in the back with Shane and I followed in the truck.
Just then the paramedic opened the door and I stepped inside. Shane was
vomiting. I looked at the paramedic and said, "We need to go Code 3."

I got back into my truck and turned on my lights and so did the ambulance.
When we saw the first red light we both turned on our sirens and left them
on until we reached the hospital. On the way there I radioed the captain and
told him what happened. Chase was in the room at the time and said he would
be right over. When we arrived, Shane was wheeled into a trauma room and we
gave the doctors the report on what happened and his current condition. I
went outside to register him and told them the circumstances of how Shane
was in my custody. I showed them my foster parent license and they said they
would contact the local agency.

When she finished the paperwork she had me sign as his temporary guardian. I
looked into the trauma room and things were beginning to slow down so I went
in to see how my boy was doing. I saw the attending so I said, "How is he
doctor?"

He noticed I was a paramedic so he filled me in. He showed he the x-rays
they took and everything was normal there. The bump on his head was really
swollen now so they wanted to do a CT scan to rule out any bleeding inside
his brain. I was pretty sure he had a concussion and the CT scan would tell
it all. I looked at him and said, "If the CT is negative, do you think he
could sleep in his own bed? I'm a qualified paramedic."

The doctor thought for a few minutes then said, "If the scan is negative and
if he wakes up, I don't see why he can't go home."

I smiled and said, "Thanks doctor. Can I stay with him until his scan?"

He nodded his head then left the room. I was so relieved I just started to
cry. I pulled up a stool and sat beside him and held his hand and cried like
a baby. I finally calmed down when I felt a hand rub my cheek. I looked up
and Shane was smiling at me. I kissed his hand and he said, "Why are you
crying Daddy? I'm all right."

I smiled at him and said, "I was just so worried about you and when the
doctor said he thinks you'll be all right I was just so happy I started
crying. I love you Shane Matthew Williams."

Shane was about to say the same thing when a guy came in and said he had to
go for his CT scan. I was going to go with him when I saw the nurse that
registered Shane and some old lady heading my way. The nurse said handing me
the lady's card, "Mr. Taylor, this is Miss Grimsley with Child and Family
Services."

I went to shake her hand when she just took over saying, "Thank you for
bringing the boy here sir. He will go into a shelter until I can get him
processed into our system. As you know budgets are tight so we will do the
best we can with him. I'm sure the boy will not need to stay in the hospital
so you can leave now."

I was just fucked and brushed off and not even kissed. This was totally
unacceptable. I looked at the bitch and said, "Just one minute lady. I
happen to be a licensed foster parent for emergency placements. If he has to
go into a shelter for several days, why can't he be with a licensed foster
parent until you can find the time to get him in the system? All this tells
me is that you have no foster homes willing to or able to take children. The
boy, as you refer to him has a name and it's Shane. Shane Matthew Williams.
Shane has a concussion and although he will not need to be in the hospital,
he will need supervised medical care. I happen to be a certified paramedic
with the state and am more than capable to care for his needs. Now if you
have a problem with this I will be more than happy to call your supervisor."

I saw the doctor and got him into a trauma room where the bitch couldn't
enter. He looked at me and said, "Not Miss Grimface is it?"

"Yeah," I said. "You know her?"

"All too well," The doc said. "She is always trying to take kids out of here
cause she don't want the county to pay for the care they need but we've
never had a problem getting our money. She trying to do that with Shane?"

"Not exactly," I said. "She doesn't want me to be his foster parent even
though I'm licensed. Can you keep him in here and away from her while I make
some calls?"

"No problem," the doctor said. "Let me know when you have things worked
out."

I came out of the room and Miss Grimface was standing by the trauma room
where Shane was looking in every direction for his return. I walked over to
her and said, "Well are you going to allow a licensed foster parent care for
him?"

She looked at me and said, "My supervisor says we have rules that must be
adhered to and no exceptions can be made."

"Very well," I said. "You've left me no alternative but to call the Director
then."

I pulled out the card the nurse gave me along with my cell phone and started
dialing. I looked closely and saw the Director's name printed on the card
too. It took several rings before someone answered it and said, "Department
of Child and Family Services."

"Mr. Gary Waters please, Mr. Simon Taylor calling," I said politely while
walking into the lounge.

I was put on hold for a couple of minutes when I heard a voice say, "Gary
Waters speaking. How may I help you Mr. Taylor?"

"Well sir I hope you can help cut through some red tape for me," I started.
EMS and I brought an 11 year-old boy into the hospital after he passed out
over finding out his parents had just been killed here because of the wild
fires. The boy has a concussion but will not need to be hospitalized. He
will need someone to closely watch him for signs of possible complications.
I happen to be a licensed foster parent for emergency placements and a state
certified paramedic and I am willing to foster Shane indefinitely if need
be. I told this to your Miss Grimsley but she stated that her supervisor
said they had rules that must be adhered to and no exceptions can be made."

"I see," Mr. Waters said. "First off sir, I am Miss Grimsley's supervisor
and secondly she never called me."

I next said, "She also told me the child would be placed in a shelter until
such time as she could enter him into the system and place him with foster
parents."

"Until such time as he can be entered?" he asked. "Any new case is entered
immediately. That is state law because we're on a statewide network. I will
be right over Mr. Taylor and thank you for calling."

I came out of the lounge and saw Shane being wheeled back into his trauma
room. Miss Grimface was making tracks for the door when the doctor came out
and said, "I'm sorry but you can't go in there. Authorized Personnel only."

I walked into the trauma room then I heard her say, "What about him?"

"He's a paramedic ma'am," the doctor said. "They're authorized personnel."

I was laughing my ass off. This bitch was finally put in her place. I sat
down and took my boy's hand and stroked his hair as he slept. I was sitting
there only a few minutes when the doctor came and got me. I stepped out into
the hall when a man said, "I'm Gary Waters Mr. Taylor. We spoke on the phone
earlier."

"Nice to meet you," I said shaking his hand.

He looked at the bitch and said, "Why are you denying a licensed foster
parent this boy and what do you mean when you said until you can get him
processed into the system?"

"You know that takes time sir," she said trying to play cover her ass. "We
just can't let children go like this. It's not natural for single men to be
foster parents. God knows what they will try to do with the child."

"He is licensed by the state," Gary started saying. "The state did a
complete background check on the man. He works for the U.S. Forrest Service
and that is good enough for me. I can process him into the system in 5
minutes right here on my laptop computer Miss Grimsley. When did Shane's
parents die?"

"They died late yesterday afternoon," I started. "I had to rescue him from
the fire too. That is how we met. We tried to get hold of his parents but we
couldn't and the area where Shane lived was closed off because of a fireball
that destroyed several neighborhoods. With all that was happening, Shane
stayed with me last night. We already have formed somewhat of a bond. I hope
this doesn't mess things up any?"

He looked at me and said, "Oh no. Shane is a very lucky boy to have you. It
seems you're sort of Shane's guardian angel."

He stood up and shook my hand saying, "He's all registered in the system.
Here is a check for $750.00 and you will be receiving one each month for
Shane's expenses. Here is his D.C.F.S. card. If he needs any medical or
dental work show them his card and we'll pay the bills."

Now I didn't become a foster parent to get rich and I don't need that money.
I looked at Gary and said, "I don't need or want the money. I can support
him with the money I make."

"I know Mr. Taylor," Gary said. "We do have some rules we have to follow and
this is one of them."

"Fine," I said. "No one said what I had to do with the money as long as it's
used on Shane. I also want to let you know sir that I plan on adopting
Shane. It is something we talked about yesterday and those are his wishes."

If Shane does want this sir," Gary started. "I will get the papers ready
when you tell me. I see that you are from Riverside. Do you know how long
you'll be here fighting this fire?"

"That kind of all depends," I said. "But I suspect at least another two
months, maybe three."

"That's fine then," Gary said. "It takes thirty days for us to do interviews
and have Shane see our psychologist. It's pretty routine stuff. I don't see
a problem."

I was looking back and forth between Gary and the bitch and I could tell she
wasn't a happy camper. I had a gut feeling that she is going to try to mess
up our adoption.

The door to the trauma room opened and out stepped the doctor followed by
Shane. I didn't want him running so I kneeled down and he walked right into
my arms. I kissed his forehead picking him up and Shane said, "Can we go
home now Daddy?"

Gary smiled and said, "I think you have a son there."

I nodded my head then said, "I told you this is what he wants. I need to get
him home now. He's had a very full day. Gary thanks for all your help here."

The bitch was staring at us and I saw Shane out of the corner of my eye
stick his tongue out at her as we went past. I looked at the clock and it
was four-thirty. I was almost to the doors when Chase came hurrying in. He
looked at us and said, "How is he?"

Shane smiled at him and said, "I'm fine Chase. I have a bump on my head and
a concession"

"That's concussion son," I said kissing him on the cheek.

We stood there for a few minutes and talked when the next person to arrive
was the captain. He lightly rubbed Shane's back and said, "I brought your
truck here. I'll take the forestry one with me."

Just then Cora Gordon came in and we talk for a few more minutes when Cora
said, "Buck you need to get him home. He's sound asleep."

I got us home and fixed Shane some soup and a sandwich. I didn't want too
much on his stomach but if he got hungry he would get anything he could
handle. I had a TV in my room so that's where we spent the rest of the
evening. Shane cuddled up next to me and said. "Thanks Daddy for being there
for me."

I looked at him and said, "Where did you expect your Daddy to be if not with
his son?"

Shane sat on my lap facing me and said, "No Daddy, I mean for the stuff I've
done. I've been nothing but a royal pain in the butt ever since I've been
here."

I was really surprised at how he was thinking. I looked into those green
eyes and said, "Hold on here son, you've done no such thing. You were in
trouble on the ground yesterday and I was doing my job rescuing you. The
rest, cleaning you up and bringing you here when we couldn't find your
parents was something I wanted to do. I wasn't about to turn you over to
that bitch from D.C.F.S. You needed clothes and you sure are going to need
even more considering you want me to adopt you. What happened today was
grief kicking in son when I told you about the cars. So now would you like
to tell me again that you've been a royal pain in the ass?"

"All right Daddy," he whispered.

I lifted up his chin and looked him in the eye and said, "I want you to
listen to one more thing. I love you Shane Matthew Williams with all my
heart and I want to be your next father."

I heard Shane sniffle then say, "I love you Simon Buck Taylor and I want to
be your son."

He stretched out and I got him undressed. He rolled over so I could look at
his hole and it was just like it was before I made love to him. I walked
around to my side on the bed and stripped and then I saw Joystick wiggling
then have to roll onto his side. I started laughing then said, "You are the
only person I know who can get a concussion and then get a hard on. You're
something else son."

I tossed on a pair of shorts and went to the kitchen to fix myself something
to eat. I asked Shane if he was hungry and he said he wasn't so I nuked some
chicken tenders and fries then ate them at the table.

I let the days events run back through my mind. This was a day where I
totally mixed emotions. It started out completely wonderful with me making
slow beautiful love to Shane. I loved what we did and I have absolutely no
regrets. Then I go to the office and try to find out about Shane's parents
and that's when things go to hell in a hand basket. I'm kicking myself for
not holding onto Shane and letting him cry it out on my shoulder and then
trying to talk about it but instead he takes off running then passes out
ringing his bell necessitating a trip to the hospital. Next there is this
old biddy with some weird idea men can't raise children.

I'm going to have to tell Shane that I can't make love to him again until
after the adoption is final. If they decide to give him a physical and force
him to bend over I don't want there to be any sign that we have made love. I
will gladly give myself to him anytime he wishes and we can do other things.

I finished eating then rinsed my plate off and put it in the dishwasher. As
I was walking back to the bedroom I decided the best thing to do was talk
with Chase about this mess.

When I went in I saw Shane curled up sound asleep. I looked at my watch and
I was out in the kitchen for over two hours. I was getting sleepy so I
stripped and did my bathroom duties. I slipped under the covers then gently
woke Shane up. He opened his eyes and said, "Is it morning yet Daddy?"

"No son it isn't," I said to him. "I need to wake you every few hours to ask
you some questions."

"Questions?" he mumbled. "Are you giving me a test now?"

I giggled and said, "No son, I'm not giving you a test. I have to do this
because of your head injury.

I asked him the questions and he managed to give me the correct answers
without any problems although he did manage to make jokes about the
questions I was asking. I curled up and he spooned against me then we both
got some much-needed sleep.

I woke him two times during the night. The first time was because I had a
wild dream and the other was because I needed to pee. I had managed to
finally get six hours of solid sleep when I felt a hand wrapped around my
dick. I looked down and Shane had a shit-eating grin on his face then I
said, "Is there something you want son?"

I knew what he thinking but I really wondered if he was able to fool around.
I decided to let him try so I rolled onto my back and let him have his way
with me. He slid onto my chest and just lay there with his head on my
shoulder as I gently rubbed his back and buns. He turned his head so we were
facing each other and I started giving him little kisses on his lips. I was
looking into his eyes as the sun came out from behind some clouds and lit up
the room. I got lost looking into those pools of emerald green.

He started kissing me harder and deeper and I was starting to moan a little.
He turned around and started licking my dick while massaging my heavy balls.
He sat up a little and opened his mouth to take my tool when he said, "Oh
Daddy, maybe this wasn't such a good idea."

I sat up and wrapped my arms around him and gently leaned him back onto the
pillow. I kissed him gently and said, "I knew it wasn't a good idea son but
I had to let you find this out for yourself."

I curled him against my body and held him there as we both drifted off back
to sleep. When I woke, I noticed it was almost eleven. I eased away from
Shane and quickly emptied my bladder. I covered my boy up and put on some
shorts so I could call Chase.

When I called I was in luck, Cora had gone shopping and took the kids with
her. I was sitting drinking a cup of coffee at the kitchen when I saw Chase
at the back door so I motioned for him to come in. "Hey Dude," I said
setting a cup of coffee in front of him. "Thanks for coming over. We need to
keep our voices down a bit. Shane's still groggy from getting his bell rung
yesterday and is still sleeping."

Chase looked at me and asked, "Did it scramble his brains?"

"No," I said. "But he is still getting dizzy very easy. I hope that clears
up today or I may have to take him back to the hospital."

"Well let's hope he can just sleep it off," Chase said sipping his coffee.
"Now what is it you need to talk with me about?"

"It's that damn social worker Miss Grimsley," I said totally pissed off but
worried. "You should have heard some of the things she was saying and trying
to convince the director I wasn't a fit foster parent."

Chase took another mouthful then said, "Obviously he didn't believe her. You
have Shane here with you."

I sighed then said, "That's not the problem. The problem is her dark ages
mentality. She says single men don't know how to raise kids and a single man
wanting to be a foster parent is unnatural. But the thing that really got me
was when she said God only knows what they will try to do with the child."

Chase almost spewed his coffee on that last one. He was just about to say
something when I heard a little voice say, "Daddy I need you lap."

Shane came around the corner and started to sit on my lap when he realized
Chase was sitting at the table. He decided to cuddle then say, "Hi Chase.
Hope you don't mind the attire but I don't feel good right now."

Chase just looked up at him and said, "Not at all sport, I have one that
goes around like that sometimes too."

Shane was just lying there on my lap and I was beginning to get worried
about him. I wanted to talk more with Chase about Ms. Bitch but the
instincts to care for my son was taking over. I looked at Chase and said,
"Can you get my bag out of the truck? Something just isn't right with
Shane."

I picked him up and carried him into the living room laying him down on the
couch. Chase set the bag on the floor and I immediately grabbed the
penlight. I shined it in the left eye first and then the right noting the
pupils in both eyes were reacting to the light very slowly. I got the card
the hospital gave me and called the number. A woman's voice answered the
phone and I said, "Dr. Bobby Ganz please, Buck Taylor calling."

I was on hold for a few minutes then a voice said, "Yes Mr. Taylor, how is
Shane doing?"

I like a doctor who remembers people. I said, "That's what I'm calling about
doc, Shane is real lethargic and his pupils are equal but very sluggish."

The doctor was quick to realize what the problem might be and said, "I want
you to call 911 and get Shane here immediately. I will be waiting for him."

I got Chase to get a pair of shorts and a shirt on Shane while I called for
the ambulance. When all that was done I told Chase to take off and head for
the hospital and that I would probably beat him there. Shane started moaning
so I got my shoes on and just cuddled with him on my lap. I heard the siren
off in the distance getting louder and louder the closer it got to the
house. Chase told the dispatcher to tell the crew to bring the stretcher in
with them so we could load and go. I heard them arrive then there was a
knock on the door. I hollered for them to come in as I stood up with Shane
in my arms. The EMT tried to take him from me and I shook my head no and he
said, "Give him to me now mister."

The paramedic had to fight with the stretcher as he pulled it up the
sidewalk so I just walked past the EMT and went out there to meet him. I
laid Shane down then looked at the EMT and said, "If you ever talk to me
like that again I will have your job."

I went back to the house to grab my jacket and lock the door. I got in the
back of the rig and the EMT started taking his time. The paramedic said
"Code 3."

He got the hint and picked up the pace and put on the lights and siren. When
we arrived at the hospital I hopped out the back door and unlocked the
stretcher and rolled to the back until it locked on the back. I released the
second lock and the paramedic was beside me and Shane was unloaded. Dr. Ganz
was standing at the door and said Trauma One. We wheeled him in and the team
started examining him. When x-ray came in I stepped out and saw the EMT on
the phone instead of being inside. I didn't think anything of it because I
was more concerned about Shane.

I had my jacket on when I saw the EMT heading towards me. He just froze in
his tracks when he saw the paramedic patch on my Forrest Service jacket. He
swallowed hard and said, "I must apologize for talking to you that way Mr.
Taylor, that was very rude of me."

I looked at him and said, "That would have been rude of you if you talked
like that to anyone. You had all the particulars for that call and you knew
it was a scoop and go. If I was your paramedic I would write you up for
being very unprofessional. Good day."

I saw x-ray come out of the room so I went in to stay with Shane. I looked
over the various monitors and all his vital signs appeared to be normal. Dr.
Ganz cam in and showed me the latest films. He said, "It seems there is a
small skull fracture right here that the x-rays and CT scan missed the first
time. I want to repeat the scan to see if there is any bleeding. I also want
to see is the fracture is depressed and if so, that could be why Shane is
acting the way he is. That was a good catch you made Buck. You may have just
saved his life."

I don't get scared often because there isn't really a need but now I am
because my boy's life might just hang on the line. I looked at my sleeping
angel and said; "I never knew what it was like to be a Dad until yesterday.
Now I can't imagine doing anything else but that. That little guy has
totally taken over my heart."

The coffee Chase and I drank earlier was now demanding release. I had to go
up front to use the staff facilities. Are you going to be here for a few
minutes Doctor? I need to use the bathroom. Too many cups of coffee
earlier."

Dr. Ganz said, "I'll get a staff member here and watch him. The front staff
restrooms are the closest."

I went up to the front of the department and ran into a friend I hadn't seen
in quite a while. We walked and talked and really caught up on some old
times. By the time I found the toilet, my bladder was screaming louder than
it does in the morning. I quickly made my bladder gladder then hurried back
to be with Shane. I was about to turn the corner when I saw that EMT
standing outside the trauma room. I'd have figured he would be back on the
street by now. This guy still had me quite pissed off and I sure as hell
didn't want him watching my boy. I turned the corner and went right for the
door. I stormed into the room and there was that bitch from yesterday. She
was poking Shane in the chest and rocking his head back and forth by the
chin saying, "Come on you lazy brat. There's nothing wrong with you. All you
welfare bums want to do is soak the county for money that is better used
else where."

I got myself between her and the door and shouted, "JUST WHAT IN THE FUCK DO
YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING LADY? YOU HAVE TWO SECONDS TO GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY
SON AND I DO MEAN NOW!!!"

I raised so much hell just then I knew I was heard if the OR. Ms. Bitch
looked at me and said, "Well if it isn't the welfare goody-goody? You want
to be this fucking brats father? Never! I know all about this kid. I have a
well-placed person too. You see that EMT out there? Do you? That's my kid
and he tells me all about the welfare brats and I make sure they don't cheat
the county. He is my eyes and ears out there on the streets."

I looked at her and said, "Well lady, and I use that term very loosely if
you look right up there on that wall they use that thing as their eyes and
ears here in this room. I'd say you're in deep shit right about now. And one
more thing, if you have caused any injury to Shane I will see you in prison
until your bones are dust. It just so happens that welfare cheat as you like
to call him has a skull fracture caused by him passing out at the news of
his parent's death. See you dumb ass broad, I don't want your county money.
I can support MY SON with the money I earn from my job. I can have him on my
insurance with just a single phone call. Your boss said I have to take the
money so I'm going to set up a savings account for Shane and put that money
in it.

I was right. Two security officers came in and took her into custody while
waiting for the police to arrive. The officer led her past me when she said,
"Good luck with the adoption. It is going to be denied."

Dr. Ganz was paged to the room STAT and began checking Shane over. I heard
him on the phone with CT wanting to know where they were and why he hadn't
been taken for his scan. It seems Master Bitch had called CT telling them
they didn't need the scan for Shane after all so it had been cancelled. I
told every staff person, "This is nothing against any of you but right now,
the only person that can completely watch Shane is me. I will not be leaving
his side until he is in a wheelchair heading for my truck."

I sure opened my mouth on that one. I guess I didn't need sleep, food or
showers anymore. I knew both those morons had been arrested so he was
finally safe. Transport came and took him for his scan and Dr. Ganz watched
every image as it came up. On the fifth scan I saw him drop his head and
that didn't seem like a very good sign.

I couldn't see the scan very well so I wasn't sure what had him upset. I
looked into where Shane was and they were sliding him out of the tube and
putting him back onto his stretcher. I went to the door where he'd be coming
out of and no sooner that I got there, he was coming out.

His head was turned towards me and I could see his eyes. They quickly got
him back to his room and I leaned down and kissed him saying, "How's my
little Joystick?"

I saw him smile and for me, that was a great sign. I sat down and he reached
for my hand. I let him hold it and in a whispered voice said, "I love you
Daddy. I guess I better not get into trouble or I'll be in for a real ass
chewing. I heard you yelling."

"Hehe," I giggled. "I'd never yell at you like that. I just wanted to get
her attention."

"Well Daddy," he giggled. "You sure got mine."

"Guess it is true that you can hear when you're unconscious," I said rubbing
his hair.

Dr. Ganz came in with Shane's CT scan and I saw another doctor with him.
Ganz smiled and said, "This is Dr. Pennington, he is a neurosurgeon. I've
asked him to look at Shane's latest scan. There was an area that I didn't
like so I asked for his opinion."

Dr. Pennington said, "In this one area here there is a small amount of blood
and I believe that is causing the lad's problem. The clot is right near the
surface and is in a very easy area to remove. Mr. Taylor I would like to
operate on Shane to remove this and the sooner I do it the sooner he can get
home."

I saw Shane and his eyes were wide open when Dr Pennington was talking. I
then saw something new in those green eyes, fear. Fear of knowing someone
was going to be operating on his head and all the risks that go with it.

I looked at the Doctors and then at Shane then said, "Could I have a few
minutes alone with my son please?"

Shane sat up and reached for me. I lowered the side rail and cuddled with
him on my lap for a few minutes. He put his hand on the back of my head and
then started crying. I stroked his head and said, "Get it out son and let it
go. It will only hurt you more the longer it stays in there."

Through the tears he said, "I shouldn't have taken off like that Daddy, it
was stupid. I knew I could talk with you. You're the one I needed to talk to
and I run off. I was scared and angry then and now I'm just plain scared."

"I'm scared to son," I said kissing the back of his head. "But we need to
think of the best option and the only one I see is the surgery. We both have
a whole lot to gain if it's successful and a lot to lose if he messes up."

"Are you saying we're both in this together Daddy?" he said with those eyes
going deep in my soul.

I kissed his lips and said, "You tell me?"

Shane turned around so he could face me then he gave me the deepest tongue
search he could muster then said, "I think we should go with the operation."

I slid my hand under his butt and stood with him in my arms. I walked around
the room with him then said, "A wise choice son."

I was holding him like a cranky baby when the doctors came in and Dr. Ganz
said, "I remember doing that with my"

"Don't say it doc," Shane said without moving his head.

Ganz laughed at Shane's retort. I looked at Dr. Pennington and said, "I'm
trusting you here with something even more precious than my life. But in a
sense, you do have my life."

Dr. Pennington looked at Shane and said, "I promise you I will bring him
back like he was before the accident."

A nurse came up to me and handed me some forms to sign. There was a knock on
the door and Gary Waters walked in. I looked over and him and he said, "I
just heard. Good luck and I'll be praying for you both." He walked over to
Shane and whispered, "For what its worth son, I want you and your Dad here
to always to be together."

I set my boy down on the gurney and signed the consent forms that put my
son's life into Dr. Pennington's hands. I hope that when that bitch shook
his head nothing happened that could alter the outcome of the operation.

A nurse said Shane needed to go over to the pre-op ward so they could start
an IV in his arm and get him ready for the surgery. I was very lucky that I
was a paramedic so I could get to stay with him while they were doing all
those things to him.

We went into the ward and the nurse showed Shane his bed. I picked up his
designer clothes for the evening and he said, "No way Daddy. I ain't putting
that thing on."

I looked at him and just said, "That's cool son. It's going to come off when
you're in there anyway so you can just go like you were this morning."

"Aw Daddy," he moaned. "This really sucks. Everyone is going to see me
naked."

I smiled at him and said, "Do you really think that your penis is going to
be the first one they've ever seen?"

"Probably not," Shane said. "But it's the best one they'll ever see."

The whole room cracked up when he said that. I looked at the nurses and
said, "He's not conceited either."

The doctors were looking for Shane but his IV wasn't started nor had he been
given his pre-op medications. I looked at Dr. Ganz and said, "If you leave
the IV stuff here and take a walk I can guarantee it will be started."

They really wanted him in there because time was also a factor so a male
nurse's assistant came over to help me. Shane looked up at him and I saw a
bulge growing under his gown. I tied the tourniquet around his arm and a
beautiful vein popped right up for me. I decided not to say anything because
it would probable go down in a minute anyway. I put on a pair of rubber
gloves the took out the catheter and said, "Make a tight fist and don't move
son."

I stuck him quick then slid the catheter into the vein. I got the blood
return I wanted and the aid handed me the tubing. I put the tubing in,
released the tourniquet then started the fluids running into Shane's vein.
An LPN came over and said, "Dr. Pennington wants you to give these to him.
Both meds are IV push."

I looked at the medications and one was Atropine and the other was Demerol.
I gave Shane the atropine first because I wanted to kiss him before he got
goofy and sleepy. I inserted the needle of the second drug into the stopcock
then said, "I'll be here when you get out son and I think that nurse's aid
will too."

Shane looked at me as he popped wood for the second time and said, "That's
cold Daddy, look at what happened."

We were totally alone for our kisses so I reached under his gown and stroked
his little joystick a few times. He closed his eyes and sucked air just I
kissed him. I told him, "When I start giving you this medicine it will go
down pretty fast. I love you son and I will be here when you come out now
good night sweet prince."

I turned up the IV so I wouldn't burn his vein. I started pushing the
plunger in and I saw his eyes begin to flicker then close completely. I
motioned for the OR staff to come and get him. I removed the needle and put
it in the sharps container then leaned down and kissed him one last time.
When the door closed I felt like I was totally empty. I had to trust that
they would be able refill it.

I had been so busy with Shane and the other goings on that I totally forgot
about Chase. I called his cell number but didn't get an answer. That was
weird so I called his house and Cora answered. I found out that while he was
on the way to the hospital he got called into work. After I hung up with
Cora, I realized that I was totally alone and it felt weird not having Shane
near me.

I didn't want a load of people here so I decided not to tell Cora about
Shane. When he gets out he's just going to sleep until morning. If things go
right, maybe they will let him come home. I had finally slowed down enough
for my body to tell me it needed food. I went to the cafeteria and got
something to eat. The one thing I like about this hospital is if they see an
EMT or Paramedic badge you get a discount on your meal.

I was so hungry I inhaled the meal and needed to get something for desert. I
can't ever remember being that hungry. After I ate I went to the gift shop
and looked for something special for Shane. I found a little teddy bear
dressed as a firefighter since he said he wants to be like Daddy. I got him
a card, some candy (what 11 y/o doesn't like candy) and a balloon. As I was
leaving the gift shop, I realized for the first time in two days, I was
totally alone.
