The Pilot III

Shane and Robert's Life

Chapter 18

I had to wipe my face as Jeremy leaned his head on my shoulder. I looked at
him, "Are you alright, son?"

He smiled at me, "I'm fine now Dad. I think she's really happy for us."

I kissed his cheek and said, "I think she is too son."

We left the cemetery and Aaron asked, "Dad, can we stop and get lunch
somewhere?" I'm really hungry."

Dad looked at him and said, "That's a great idea, anybody up for the Golden
Corral?"

Robert and I nodded our heads then it was off to watch the twins stuff
themselves silly. We paid for the buffet and found a table as the twins
headed off to the food.

"I hope they have enough," Robert said laughing.

Dad laughed, "Funny son, I said the same thing when I brought you two here."

"Aww Dad," Robert said.

I was rolling because I used to really pig out. I looked at Dad, "You're
right because I'm starved."

I grabbed a plate and filled it like I did when I was younger. The boys ate
their fill and it was a nice sight to see that. Robert and I put a hurting
on the food line as we went through three times and still had room for ice
cream.

By the time we got home it was after three. We decided we needed a nap after
the meal we put away so we headed for our rooms. The four of us snuggled
together and dozed off to rest.

Aaron was the first to stir and I felt him get up to go to the bathroom. I
cocked an eye open and it was almost six so I decided to get the others up.
We all had to empty our bladders so after that was done we put on our
underwear then went out to the living room.

Dad was coming out of his room and he asked, "Is anyone hungry?"

I was still full from lunch when Jeremy said, "Not right now Granddad."

We decided when we were we would just fix a pizza. Dad put the news on the
television as we just relaxed together. About an hour later, the boys
started getting hungry so they put a frozen pizza in the oven and we ate it
in front of the television. The boys ended up with some sauce on them so
they decided to get their shower.

Dad found an old movie on the tube so we all got nostalgic together. The
movie ended at 10:30 then it was time for bed. I was going to be the first
one up as I had to work. Jeremy kissed me good night, "We're going to try to
sleep in our room tonight Dad."

I kissed him back and said, "That's OK. If you can't sleep, you know where
we are."

I gave Aaron and Dad a hug and kiss then Robert and I turned in for the
night. I was still tired from the day before so no sooner was I spooned
against Robert I was asleep.

5 o'clock came too early for me as I felt I could have slept another couple
of hours. I stumbled out of bed and into the bathroom to pee and shave. I
put on my flight suit then grabbed my socks and boots heading for the
kitchen. I no sooner fixed my coffee and sat down when Jeremy came in. He
hugged me saying, "Hi Dad. I woke up on my own so I thought I would see you
before you went to work."

"I can't think of a better way to have my morning coffee than with your
company son," I said as I put on my socks and boots.

He smiled when he heard that. "That's also a nice sight," I said smiling
with him.

"I still miss mom," Jeremy said. "But today it's a little better than
yesterday."

"And tomorrow will be a little better than today," I said sipping my coffee.

"Will I forget her?" He asked sincerely.

"Oh no son," I said rubbing his hand. "You'll never forget her. It's been
over 20 years since my parents died but I still remember them. You will
always carry those memories right here in your heart. I have to get going
son. I'll see you tomorrow morning when you get up for school."

I stood up and Jeremy hugged me tightly, "Alright Dad, be careful. I love
you."

I kissed his cheek and said, "I love you too."

We walked to the garage door and I went and got into the Yukon then opened
the door. I started it up then backed out waving good bye to Jeremy. I
closed the door and headed off to the helo pad.

Christine Mellon was starting her day deciding if she had given Timothy
Curtis' lawyer enough time to meet with her regarding discovery of evidence.
At 7:30 she left her apartment and headed to her office. She walked in at 8
and decided she had in deed given him adequate time.

She got herself a cup of coffee then went into her office to call Judge
Calvin Henry. His clerk answered, "Judge Henry's office."

"Judge Henry please, Christine Mellon calling," she said.

"One moment please."

A voice came on the phone saying, "Good morning Christine, to what do I owe
the pleasure this early in the day?"

"Good morning Your Honor," she said. "As you know, I'm prosecuting Timothy
Curtis."

"Yes I do," he said.

"Well it's been almost 10 days since I've been assigned the case and his
attorney has yet to approach me regarding discovery. I had a meeting with
him and the defendant to offer him a plea and he just sat there while his
client said no deal before I could tell him what I was offering."

"I take it you have some solid evidence?" he asked.

"Yes I do," she said. "And what gets me is if he didn't really have a child
he would be bringing me anything he could to prove it. I would like a
meeting with Your Honor and Curtis' attorney."

"For what purpose?" He asked.

"I want to present this to you in front of him and see what he has to say,"
Christine started. "I don't want a mistrial or him getting an appeal based
on ineffective council."

"Very well," Judge Henry said. "I'll see you at 11:30 and I'll have my clerk
contact Mr. Curtis' attorney."

"Thank you Your Honor," Christine said. "I'll see you at 11:30."

Christine went down to the DA's office and said, "I have a meeting with
Judge Henry at 11:30."

"Are you trying to give the defense all your ammunition?" the DA asked.

"Not at all," Christine said. "If anything it's the other way around."

"What makes you say that?" He asked.

"He still hasn't said shit to me," she said. "With a case like this he'd be
calling me a dozen times a day."

"Maybe," the DA said. "It's your case Christine, run with it."

She had two hearings that morning then she was on her way to Judge Henry's
chambers. She knocked and the door and a voice said, "Come in."

She went in and there was Curtis' attorney standing there. She walked over
and extended her hand saying, "Christine Mellon."

"Kent Harris," he said shaking her hand. "Why have I been summoned like a
school boy to the principal's office?"

"Watch you tongue Mr. Harris," Judge Henry said. "I summoned you here at Ms.
Mellon's request."

"I'm sorry Your Honor," he said. "What's the problem?"

"The problem is you've never contacted the DA's office about discovery," the
Judge said.

"That's simple," Mr. Harris said. "My client has offered me nothing to work
with. I've met with him two times and both times he's told the same thing.
He told me he didn't have a child and it was their job to prove he did."

Christine looked at Mr. Harris and said, "You know I could bring the child
in and demand a paternity test."

"If you really believed the boy is telling the truth you would have had him
here on day one," Mr. Harris said smugly. "And besides, that could take up
to six months."

"Not if I ordered a rush on it," The Judge said.

"I just don't think the state has a pirma facia case," Mr. Harris said.

The judge looked at him and said, "It's just that that prima facia case that
could convict your client too."

Mr. Harris looked at Christine and said, "You think you can convict my
client?"

"Without a doubt," Christine said.

"I'll talk with my client," Mr. Harris said.

"You have until the end of the day," Christine said. "Otherwise I'll see you
on Monday."

Christine left Judge Henry's chambers confident that she wouldn't have to
worry about a mistrial. She went back to her office and set out issuing
subpoenas. She looked at her list and had ones for Linda Eggleston, Shane
Taylor and Tony Alvarez issued.

I had just got back from a flight to Jackson flying a man there with severe
burns to 40% of his body. He was lighting a charcoal grill and tried the get
the coals going by squirting more fuel in it and it flashed on him.

I went into the office and there was a sheriff's deputy standing there. He
looked at me and said, "Are you Shane Taylor?"

"Yeah," I said. "What's up?"

He stuck a folded piece of paper at me and said, "I have a subpoena for
you."

I knew what that was, "Thanks. I've been waiting for this."

I opened it and read what it said. The trial is starting on Monday. I looked
at the schedule and I was slated to be on duty that day. I walked down to
the Chief's office and knocked on his door. "Enter," he said.

"Hi Chief," I said walking over to his desk. "You remember that homeless boy
I picked up after the hurricane?"

"Yeah," he said as I handed him the subpoena.

"The trial starts on Monday," I said.

"Alright," he said. "I'll show you on paid court time. Do you know when
you'll be testifying?"

"Nope," I said. "The ADA just said she would need me there and subpoenaed
me."

I called home and talked with Dad, "I got my subpoena today."

"When's the trial start?" He asked.

"Monday," I said. "Do you think we should tell the twins?"

"I'm sure they'll want to know," Dad said. "But I'm not sure if they need to
be there. I know they'll want to be."

"I don't know Dad," I said. "Talk it over with Robert and I'll go along with
what ever you two decide. I can't see them missing school."

"Yeah," Dad said, "But would they really concentrate on their work or would
they be thinking about Jake."

"Good question," I said. "Probably just thinking about Jake."

"Robert's going to have to work unless he takes a vacation day," Dad said.

"We can talk about it more when I get home tomorrow," I said. "They're
putting dinner on the table. Tell the twins I love them and I'm fine."

The rest of the day went slow and I didn't have another call. I left the
next morning on time and got home at 6:15. When I walked into the kitchen I
was greeted by Jeremy dressed, ready for school and I had a hot cup of
coffee waiting for me. "You didn't have to do that son," I said as he hugged
me.

"I know Dad," he said. "I'm awake and it's something I like doing."

I realized that I might have been fighting a losing battle so I didn't say
anything again. I took a mouthful of coffee then went into the bedroom and
took my boots off and got out of my flight suit. I came back into the
kitchen and Dad had joined us. "Morning Dad," I said hugging him. "Were all
your days at work slow and boring?"

"Most of them were son," he said sitting down to the table. "They all
weren't filled with action and adventure. Not even when I was with the
Forrest Service was it busy every day."

"Alright," I said. "I've had one run in the last two shifts."

"Some days are like that son," Dad said. "I was happy because it meant no
one was getting hurt. I know you haven't been flying long so you enjoy being
in the air and you'll have days when you can't catch your breath so be
thankful you have these now."

I knew he was right so I let it drop. I got up and got the cereal and bowls
for the boys' breakfast as Jeremy said, "Can you tell us about when you flew
Granddad?"

Aaron and Robert came into the kitchen and it was 6:40. I looked at Jeremy
and said, "How about he tells you tonight over dinner? You have 20 minutes
until you have to leave for school."

Dad smiled and said, "That's a good idea. I have a good story to tell you
both tonight."

I looked at him and he just smiled so I knew which story it was going to be.

The boys finished eating and Robert had his coffee then it was time for them
to head off to school. Dad and I gave them each hugs and kisses and they
were out the door. I looked at Dad, "Why is it I think the boys are going to
see me covered in mud?"

"I think they would love to hear how I first got to know you," Dad said.
"Besides, I don't think they'd believe me without that picture and a few
others?"

"Few others?" I asked surprised. "What few others?"

"I got one of your bare mud covered butt," He said giggling.

I don't ever remember him taking that one. I did look a fright before I got
cleaned and I don't think I'd have ever gotten all that gunk off me without
help.

I was about to pour a cup of coffee when the phone rang and it was John
asking if Joey could stay here because he was sick. Dad got on the phone and
said, "You know you don't have to ask that son. Bring him down."

John and Joey arrived a few minutes later and I answered the door. "You look
rough dude," I said.

"I was up almost all night with him," John said. "Give him one of these
every six hours and he's due for one now."

I looked at what he gave me and they were Phenergan suppositories. I turned
to look at Joey and he was running down the hall to the bathroom. "What did
the doctor think it is?" I asked.

"Probably a stomach virus that's going around," John said.

"We'll take care of him," I said. "Don't work too hard love."

"I'll try not to," he said as he turned and went to his car.

I went down the hall to the bathroom to check on Joey. He was sitting on the
floor beside the toilet with tears running down his face. I went in and
kneeled beside him as he looked up at me and said, "I don't feel good Uncle
Shane."

He no sooner got those words out when he stuck his head back in the toilet
and threw up again. I knew I had to get one of those suppositories in him so
he didn't dehydrate or get the dry heaves. I looked at him, "Are you alright
now?"

"I think so Uncle Shane," he said looking at me with sad puppy dog eyes.

I reached into the medicine cabinet and took out a cotton tipped swab and
picked Joey up and brought him into the twins' room. I set him on the bed
and said, "I'll be right back."

I went out to the living room and got the medicine John gave me as Dad came
into the room. "What's wrong with Joey?"

"Poor little guy has one hell of a stomach virus," I said. "He's calling
long distance to the porcelain god."

"What have you got there, son?" He asked.

"Phenergan suppositories John gave me for him," I said.

"Good," Dad said. "That should make him feel better so he can rest."

I went back to Joey and I heard him back in the bathroom again. He flushed
the toilet and said, "Do you have my medicine?"

We went into the bedroom and I said, "Got it right here pal. Hop up here and
pull your pants down and lay on your tummy."

While he was doing that I took a suppository out of the wrapper and put a
small drop the boys' lube on the end of it. I spread Joey's cheeks and held
the suppository against his rectum then used the swab to slide it in. I
removed the swab then patted his bottom.

"It's in already?" He asked. "I hardly felt it."

"I'm good," I said smiling.

I want to go out and watch television when Joey asked, "Can you hold me
Uncle Shane?"

I picked him up and carried him out to the living room and put on some
cartoons for my little patient. Dad came in and said, "That's another
familiar sight."

He sat down beside us as I remembered the times he held me when I was sick.
Joey snuggled on my lap and watched cartoons until the medicine started
making him drowsy. I held him for about an hour then he was sound asleep. I
carried him back to the twins' room and laid him on the bed so he could get
some much needed rest.

He slept most of the morning and about one he woke up saying he was thirsty.
I had some Gatorade for when I was very thirsty so I fixed him a glass of it
half strength. I brought it to him and said, "Don't guzzle it down now son,
just take sips."

I sat with him while he sipped the Gatorade and hoped it stayed down. He
drank about half of it then said, "Thanks Uncle Shane. I'm sleepy."

The medication was still doing its job. Joey settled back down under the
covers so I tucked him in and kissed him as I went back out to the living
room. "How's he doing son?" Dad asked.

He drank half a glass of half strength Gatorade and it seems to be staying
down for now," I said. "The Phenergan still has him sleepy and that's what
he's dong now."

"I have a feeling we're going to be having him for a couple of days until he
can hold down solid food," Dad said.

"I think you're right," I said sitting down. "I might tell John to leave him
here tonight so he can get a good nights sleep."

"Good idea," Dad said. "So how does it feel to be a dad?"

I smiled from ear to ear and said, "Feels great and I'm glad I have a great
teacher here to help."

I leaned against him and cuddled like I did when I was younger. I looked up
at Dad and he wrapped his arm around me saying, "You're never too old to
cuddle son."

Dad and I were watching a program on the tube when we heard Joey run across
the hall. I got up to see if he was alright and when I looked in the
bathroom he was standing in front of the toilet with his briefs down peeing.
He pulled his underwear up and was about to flush the toilet when he stuck
his head in and started throwing up again.

I looked at my watch and it was almost 2:30. I had Joey rinse his mouth out
then he went back and laid down. I turned the boys' television on for him
while I went and talked with Dad. "He peed then threw up," I said. "It's
been over 6 hours since his last suppository but I'm getting a little
worried."

"You have to give it at least 24 hours son," Dad said. "If he's not better
by tomorrow then John should call the doctor back and have him seen."

"I just feel sorry for the little guy," I said.

"I know son," he said smiling. "I felt the same way when you were sick too."

I got another swab from the bathroom and gave Joey another suppository. I
sat with him and he sipped down the rest of the Gatorade. I decided to get
him some ginger ale to drink in case the Gatorade was too sweet on his
stomach. I brought that back then sat with him until he got drowsy.

Joey dropped off to sleep again as I heard Robert and the boys some in from
school. I came out of their room as Dad said, "Keep the noise down please.
Joey is in your room boys and he's not feeling well."

Jeremy came over and hugged me saying, "What's wrong with him Dad?"

"He's got a stomach virus," I said. "He's throwing up bad."

"Poor guy," Aaron said. "We will be very quiet when we change."

The boys got out of their school clothes then did their homework at the
dining room table. Dad was fixing dinner when Joey came out and said, "I'm
thirsty again and I drank the soda."

Aaron picked him up as Jeremy got him another glass of ginger ale. "Are you
feeling any better?" Aaron asked him.

"A little," Joey said resting his head on Aaron's shoulder.

Jeremy handed him the glass and he took a few sips then started squirming.
Aaron put him down as Joey bolted for the bathroom. I shook my head as Dad
said, "You have to let it run its course."

Joey came back out to the kitchen and raised his arms in front of Jeremy
this time. He leaned down and picked him up and held him as nodded back off
to sleep. John came back to get Joey anf Dad said, "He's asleep now. He's
been vomiting off and on all day. How about you let him stay here tonight so
you can get some sleep? If he isn't better in the morning, you'll need to
call the doctor back."

John yawned then said, "I know he didn't get much sleep last night. He
wanted me to sleep with him but he was up more than he was asleep. You and
Shane are more knowledgeable about this sort of thing and I really need some
sleep. I really appreciate this, guys. I'll call you in the morning to see
how he is."

John left and went home to rest. I saw Aaron come out of the bedroom and
said, "He feels warm Dad."

I went into the bathroom and looked for a thermometer. I couldn't find one
in there so I went to Dad and said, "Do we have a thermometer?"

He went into his bathroom and came out holding one saying, "This was yours
the first time you got sick."

I looked at it and said, "Does this go?"

"Yep," Dad said smiling. "For someone who's throwing up, an oral thermometer
is not the best idea. I found out the hard way with you."

"Sorry Dad," I said as I went down the hall to check on Joey.

I went into the room and the twins were lying with him in the middle. I
gently eased his briefs down then lubed and inserted the thermometer. Aaron
was closest so I put his hand on Joey's butt with the thermometer in between
two fingers so it wouldn't slide out.

After three minutes I took it out and read it. I looked at Aaron and said,
"99.6 son. That's a normal rectal temperature. I think he might feel warm
from being under the covers. Next time put your lips on his forehead and if
he feels warmer than normal, chances are he's running a fever."

I left the twins with Joey then went back out to the kitchen. I hadn't
gotten any rest like I normally do after a day at work so I knew it was
going to be a long night.

To be continued
