Miguel Sanchez The Pilot III Shane and Robert's Life Chapter 30 I sat down on the couch and then it hit me as to just how tired I was. I'm glad I was off tomorrow because I'm going to need the sleep. I didn't see Dad go down the hall but he and Robert were coming back into the living room then they sat down beside me. Dad leaned over and kissed me, "Why don't you go to bed son?" I had my head back and my eyes were closed as I said, "That means I gotta move; don't it?" "Hehehe," Dad giggled. "You're just a little too big for me to be carrying to bed." "Party pooper," I said just as I felt myself being picked up like a baby and carried to our bedroom. "Come on my baby," Robert said as he carried me. "Da da," I said giggling. Well, that was until I reached the bed and Robert dropped me. We got undressed and then cuddled close to fall asleep. I was almost asleep when Aaron came in, "Dad, Jeremy needs you. He says he has to take a dump." I got up and went down the hall to Jeremy. He was sitting up and I could tell he was uncomfortable. "Dad, I'm sorry I had to get you up but I gotta use the bathroom really bad." "It's OK son," I said. "I was wondering when you'd have to go. Can you hold it while I carry you?" "Yeah Dad," he said. "Just hurry please." I scooped him up and carefully got him through the doors. Aaron was in there with his crutches and raised the lid. He helped me get Jeremy standing on his good leg with his crutches then we helped him sit down. Jeremy started going but Aaron and I decided we could breathe better if we waited in the bedroom. After 10 minutes, Jeremy said he was done but couldn't clean himself. Aaron and I got him back onto his good leg and I held him while Aaron took the cleaning duties. When he was clean, Jeremy used his crutches to get back to their room. I kissed the boys then went back to bed and quickly fell to sleep. Jeremy had to stay off his broken leg for at least 3 days until it started healing. The problem at our place was the doors were tight and maneuvering with crutches was difficult. Fortunately for Dad when I was at work, Jeremy didn't need to use the toilet when it was just the two of them. Sunday arrived and John, Billy and the boys were at the airport to pick up John's parents. Jake stood back as everyone got hugs until John said, "Come on son and meet your Grandparents." "Oh my, son," she said gently hugging him. "What happened to you?" "Nothing really," he said trying not to make a big deal about it. "Some friends and I were riding our bikes and we had a little accident. One the way home, John explained what happened then stopped at our house so we could see them. Pat had to meet the twins and dote over the other wounded soldier before heading home to relax. Big John and Pat were tired from the trip and decided to take a nap before dinner. Jake's arm was bothering him and he needed some extra attention. Before they knew it, it was 11 and everyone had to get to bed as Monday was a school and work day. Monday evening Jake was getting nervous about seeing his mother the next day. He was clinging to John like a life preserver but did manage to let Pat mother him some. John told his parents about what Jake had gone through and Tuesday would be the last time he had to deal with either of his parents. On Tuesday, Jake was still acting nervous about going to court. He just stood in the kitchen absentmindedly starring out the sliding glass doors. "Come sit down son," John said. "You were there when your Dad was sentenced. Now today, your mother goes to court and Christine has worked out a plea agreement. You shouldn't have to say anything about what happened." "Plea agreement?" Jake asked. "Is that where she says she did it and then gets sentenced?" "Well sort of," John said. "Christine worked out all the details and I don't know all of them but she will be in prison for 8 years." "That's good," Jake said. "But why am I here and not in school?" John took a deep breath, "Well, I thought you would want to be there too, like I said before." "Um well," Jake started then thought about it. "Yeah, OK. I'll be there." John leaned over and kissed Jake, "Great, so lets get breakfast and we can go to court." Jake put his arm in his sling and followed John into the kitchen where Pat had two frozen waffles waiting for him. Joey leaned over and gave Jake a syrup kiss. "Thanks Joey" Jake said. "A sweet kiss from a sweet boy." "Morning boys," Pat said as she sipped her coffee. "Slow down Jake, it's not going any where." Jake buttered and put syrup on his waffles and inhaled them. "Boy Jake and Dad says I eat fast." Joey chirped. "I was hungry," Jake said wiping his mouth. John drank down his coffee then hugged Billy and Joey as they went off to school. After they brushed their teeth, John and Jake were off to court. John and Pat kissed their son and Jake, "We'll see you when you get back." "Alright son," Big John said. "There is something we need to talk with you about too when you get back." Traffic was it usual nightmare and there were still traffic lights out making it even more treacherous. They arrived at 8:45 and found a parking place then entered the building. They walked down to the courtroom where the first trial was and John looked inside. The room was empty and he was about to turn around when they saw Christine heading towards them. John quickly walked over to her and said, "I haven't said anything about the adoption to Jake yet. I don't want him knowing until she's signed the recommendation and given up her parental rights." "I understand John," she said. "Hi there Jake, what happened to you?" "The twins and I went riding on Saturday and well we sorta bumped into each other," Jake said. "Jeremy ended up with a broken leg." "What happened to the other twin?" Christine asked. "He got a little skinned up but he's fine," Jake said. "I'm glad it wasn't any worse kiddo," Christine said as she signed his cast. "Are you ready for this? You know you're not going to have to testify." Jake looked at the cast then said, "Yeah, I know that now. I wish it was this easy the first time." They walked into the courtroom and Christine took her place at the prosecution table. John and Jake sat behind her and waited until 9. A man walked in and sat at the other table then Jake saw his mother led in and was seated by the man. The next thing they heard was "All rise, this court is now in session, the Honorable Judge Calvin Henry presiding." "Be seated," the Judge said. "What is the first case today?" "This is the state of Florida vs. Maria Curtis," the clerk read. "She is charged with child endangerment and child abandonment." "Very well," Judge Henry said. "I understand that a plea arrangement has been worked out?" "Yes Your Honor," Christine said. "Is the defense in agreement?" the Judge asked. The man looked at Maria and she nodded her head then the man said, "Yes, Your Honor." The judge then said, "Will the defendant and her council please stand. Maria Curtis, you've been charged with 2 felonies. Child endangerment and child abandonment, how do you plead?" "Guilty Your Honor," she said. Christine stood holding some papers. Your Honor, under the terms of the plea agreement Mrs. Curtis will voluntary give up her parental rights and agree to one other stipulation. May I approach the defendant?" "You may," the Judge said. Christine set two documents before Maria Curtis and she signed them. Her signature was witnessed by her attorney then Christine handed them to the Judge. The Judge read them and asked, "Are you sure about this?" "Yes Your Honor," Maria's attorney said. Christine returned to her table then pulled out another set of documents then said, "Your Honor, the state has a motion to place before the court." He looked at the defense and he said, "No objection." Christine then said, "Your Honor, the state hereby moves that John Phillips adopt the minor child Jake Curtis." "Really," Jake said surprised. "Is that a problem Jake," Judge Henry asked him. "N-no sir," Jake stuttered. "What happened to your arm?" He asked. "Bike riding with Aaron and Jeremy Saturday," Jake said. "We collided and I got this but Jeremy broke his leg." "Well, I hope you both get better soon," the Judge said. Mr. Phillips, are you willing to adopt Jake and raise him until he's an adult?" "I am," he said. The clerk handed John the papers and he signed them and handed them back. The clerk brought them to the Judge who stated, "Then it is the order of this court that John Phillips is the legal parent of Jake Curtis and that he will now be know as Jake Phillips." Christine then said, "Your Honor, we also move that all records of the adoption be permanently sealed, including all records now held by DCFS." "So ordered," the Judge said. Christine picked up the strong box and another piece of paper and brought it to the Judge. He looked it over and said, "It is the order of this court that the contents of that strong box be put in trust for Jake Phillips. Do you know of a trust attorney, Mr. Phillips?" "Ah, yes Your Honor," John said. "Jess Martin is a good attorney." "Very well," he said turning his eyes back towards Maria. "Maria Curtis, you have pled guilty to the charges of child endangerment and child abandonment. It is the judgment of the court and in accordance with the plea agreement that you be sentenced to a term of 15 years in prison with 7 of them suspended. It is also ordered that you will serve all 8 years and will then be placed on supervised probation for a term of three years. This court is adjourned. Congratulations Mr. Phillips." Jake leaped into John's arms and said, "Oh Dad, why didn't you tell me you were going to adopt me today?" "Because son," he started. "I didn't want to get your hopes up and then have everything fall through. Your mother could have easily changed her mind and I didn't want to see you get hurt." Jake thought about that then said, "I guess you're right Dad. Oh man, I'm sooo happy. I love you Dad, thank you." Christine came over and handed John the box and key then said, "You need to get this over to your lawyer. There is something else in there but I don't know what it is. Congratulations Jake, I hope you finally find some happiness in your life now. Good luck to you and your Dad." Jake smiled at her and said, "I think you mean Dads. I have two Dads and two brothers now." She hugged him saying, "Well good luck to all of you. It's time you find happiness. I am sorry for not talking with you when we got out court with your Dad." "It's OK," Jake said. "I had my Dad and Grandpa there. At least it's all over now." John and Jake left the court room and drove home as quickly as he could. When they got home John noticed that Billy and Joey were not yet home. He kissed his Mom and Dad then headed for the phone. Big John said, "Slow down son, we want to talk with you." "Just a minute John said, "I have to call Pop. I need a phone number." John called my Dad and got Jess' number then proceeded to call him. He had to hold for a minute then Jess came on saying, "Hi John, I was just on the phone with Buck. He said you would be calling. What can I do for you?" John explained everything, "I want to get this set up for Jake as quickly as possible. There is an envelope in here that I haven't a clue as to what it is." Jess looked at his schedule, "I can see you and Jake at 2:30 if that's convenient." John said that would be fine and hung up the phone. After putting the phone down, John returned to the kitchen and fixed himself a cup of coffee, still stalling for time, then sat down with his parents and new son. "Sorry but I had to call Jess Martin." "What was so important you couldn't sit down and tell us about court," Pat said. Just then Billy and Joey came in from school. John looked up giving his partner a wink and a slight nod of his head letting Billy know they had been successful, "Sorry babe, we got done sooner than we thought." Jake came back in and sat down with everyone as John set the box down. "I needed to get this to Jess. Now that everyone is here, Jake, would you please tell everyone your name?" Pat, Big John and Joey looked at John as if he had lost his mind, Billy just stood next to his mate with a big grin covering his face. Jake was grinning ear to ear as he spoke, "Well, as of about an hour ago, my name is Jake Phillips." "Cool," Joey said. "Another brother", as he scooted around the table into his new brother's arms. "OUCH! That cast hurts. I'll really be glad when it comes off." "Yeah, me too, Bro." Pats eyes lit up and said, "Your son?" Oh baby, that's wonderful. Looks like we now have another grandson." She went around and kissed Jake and then John as John said, "OK Mom, just please don't spoil him like you do Joey." "Would I do that?" She said smiling. "In a heart beat," John replied as Jake sat there giggling. Pat looked at Jake, "So how's your boyfriend doing? Is his leg any better?" Jake's face suddenly turned ashen when he heard what Pat just said. "B-but h-he's not my boyfriend," Jake stammered. "He's just a good friend." John looked up worried that Jake hadn't yet realized that his parents were fine knowing he and Billy were gay and partners. Pat went and sat beside Jake, "It's ok sweetie. I know you're gay. Look at John, I've known he was gay long before he came and told us. At the time, I couldn't say I was thrilled about it but that was also because I knew he would have a very hard time growing up. Over the years, Granddad and I have learned quite a lot thanks to Buck. I know the looks he gives Billy and the smile he gets on his face anytime his name is mentioned. I saw that with you with the twins' and anytime their name was mentioned. We love and accept you Jake, not for what you are but for who you are. Welcome to our family." Jake fell into his grandmother's arms and cried letting the relief leave his body. Pat then sat up and slapped John's hand saying, "And just why didn't you tell us you were going to adopt Jake?" "OUCH," John said rubbing his hand. "Like I said, I didn't tell you for the same reason I didn't tell Jake. I didn't want everyone's hopes up for something that sill could have fallen through." "I can understand that," Pat said. "But don't let it happen again." "Yes, Ma'am". Joey went down to his room and got out of his school clothes then came back in just his underwear. Jake looked at him and said, "Joey, Gramma is here. Where are your manners?" "What," he said. "Gramma's seen me like this before." "And in a lot less too," she said kissing Joey's cheek. Big John smiled then said, "Well I'm glad everyone is here because there is something we need to talk over with you boys. With everything that's happened since we got here, there wasn't really time to sit down and discuss this." John looked up and said, "Is this about the renovations I mentioned to you earlier?" "Sort of," Big John said. "You're not the only ones that haven't been forthcoming. Quite frankly we should have called from California to see how you guys were doing. After we got back, I'm afraid that we just couldn't come up with the courage to talk about this; that was mostly my fault. I'm sorry, guys, I should have found a better time to say this. As you know, we extended our stay in California after we heard the hurricane was coming right for us. Son, we're not getting any younger and the idea of having to ride out storms like this one isn't sitting well with us. We did it when we were younger and even then, we really didn't like it. If it weren't for Buck and him having a generator at his place, I don't know what we would have done." "I know Dad," John said. "It did get pretty hairy there at times. Now what is all of this apologizing about?" Big John continued, "Well, when we were in California we did some looking and well, uh, we found something in a small senior's community." "What?" John said. "You're going to sell the house? When? Billy and I will need time to find a place for us." "Calm down John," Big John said. "We're not going to sell the house. It's always been our intention that you and Billy get this place when we die, so now, you're just getting it a little earlier." "But moving clear across the country?" John said. "And what about the earthquakes?" And just why in the hell were you so afraid to say anything until here at the last minute – Dad – this really sucks and is so damned unfair – damnitalltohell, Dad – I'm pissed and really hurt worse than I have ever been hurt before . . I'm going for a walk, now – I'm not really sure I even want to be around for the rest of this . . . "Calm down love," Billy said wrapping his arms around his lover. "This has taken me by surprise too. I'm hurt too but let's finish hearing what they have to say. I do agree with John that you should have called us from California so we could have been a little more prepared for this." "I'm sorry boys," his Dad said. "I see how hurt you are but there aren't all that many earthquakes there and those that are, aren't all the bad. The place we saw has withstood the ones that have hit so it is built solid, like our home is." John was getting misty eyed then said, "Damn Dad," Big John got up and went over then hugged his son. "I know son, we're going to miss you all too but you guys can come visit. And we expect it. Please remember, we're not getting any younger." "And we better see you," Pat said. Big John said, "The idea of the renovation and adding another bedroom is a good one but now you won't really need to unless you plan on expanding your family." Billy looked up and said, "He has a point there love." Jake and Joey were both sitting there listening to all this then suddenly they started sobbing, hugging themselves and rocking back and forth. Big John saw this and went over to Jake, picking the teen up and Pat went to Joey and picked him up. "What's wrong Jake?" John asked. "Why are you crying?" "Well," Jake said. "It's just that I get new parents and grandparents in the same day and now you're leaving. I've barely gotten to know you. Don't you love me? Am I the reason you're leaving us?" "OH, NO SON! Like I said, I should have told you all earlier. I'm sorry, son. This is not your fault. This is a decision your Gramma and I made before we even knew that your Dads had you. I know it hurts, son and that's the same way for us, too." Big John said. "That's why I expect you all to come out and visit a lot. We really do want to get to know our newest grandson. Please believe me boys; I'm sorry we hurt you." Pat came over and put her arms around Jake while still holding Joey. She wiped Jake's away and said, "Shh now honey. We still have time here." Big John lifted Jake's chin and said, "That's right son. We're going to spend some time getting to know our newest grandson." Pat looked at Joey and said, "Now don't you think we forgot about you either little man. We're going to spend time with you too." John looked up at the clock then said, "Look guys, I have to get over to Jess Martin's office. We can talk more when Jake and I get back." To be continued
