The Pilot III

Shane and Robert's Life

Epilog

The school year ended without anyone else getting injured although Joey
almost took a few years off his Dad's life. He was in a hurry one afternoon
and went running from his bedroom to the kitchen to get some cookies. Now
he's been told, as has everyone, not to run in the house. Well, Joey is hard
headed and also has a hard butt. He had in his socks and when he hit the
ceramic tile in the kitchen and his feet flew out from under him and he
landed hard on his butt. Thank god I was over there at the time and checked
him out and he was OK but he could have really hurt himself.

Joey still loves to mess around with the twins and Jake and they even let
him watch once when they decided to have a 3 way suck off. From time to time
they do give him some pleasure also. John and Billy weren't upset with it
when they found out but thought it might be best if things like that were
kept private in the future.

When the twins turned 16, they sat down with Dad, Robert and me to tell us
what they finally decided for career goals. Aaron still had a love for
flight and being a paramedic. He wanted to take helicopter flying lessons
and at 16, he could. Since he was going part time it took him almost a year
to complete the program. Since his graduation and subsequent licensing, I've
rented a helo a few times and we've all gone out for a nice time in the air.
Once, we took everyone and made a day of it having lunch in Daytona.

Jeremy told us that he has a love for medicine but not the fast paced life
of the fire department. He's decided to go into medicine and become a
Doctor. Dad and I were both ecstatic and wanted to know if he had decided on
a school. Jeremy said he really hadn't but he was thinking about the
University of Miami because they also have a top notch Medical School.

We learned that Jake wanted to follow in Billy's footsteps and become a
teacher. He loved children and being able to teach them was something he
found very rewarding. Jake had developed a real love for science so he was
leaning on teaching middle school science and biology.

James had been working on a degree in engineering thus following in John's
footsteps. After he graduated, he landed a very lucrative position with a
large firm just outside Riverside, CA. It was hard seeing him move across
the country so soon after graduating but it was something he had to do.
After he graduated, he told us that he and his girlfriend had decided to
split after an ill timed comment she made about John and Billy.

It seems she was very homophobic and one evening after she had consumed a
little too much champagne, she said she didn't know how he could stand
having two fags for fathers. Needless to say, James was both very hurt and
pissed off. He told her he would rather have two "fags" for fathers than be
a gold digging bitch living on Daddy's money then trying to marry a person
with money and a good career. We were all sad to hear the news because James
really did have feelings for this girl. Better to find out now than after
the marriage.

While in college, James had been working on a radical idea on desalinizing
sea water and had perfected it so they could turn millions of gallons a day
into safe drinking water. He'd come up with a new technology where they can
do this at a fraction the cost and in about a quarter of the time it would
take using older means. Dad told us that Southern California really needed a
better way to get water because their current system wasn't handling the
area's growth and development.

After two years of heading the project, James was promoted to one of the
Vice Presidency positions. He had an executive assistant and began to
socialize during their off hours. A few years after the relationship began
she got pregnant with twins unbeknownst to James. James had always wondered
weather or not he was the father but she didn't want to use that to trap or
force him into a marriage neither of them really wanted.

During the seventh month, she was informed of a serious heart problem that
could put her at risk. When his assistant learned that continuing with the
pregnancy could put her life in jeopardy, she decided to tell James. The two
of them worked out and agreement that if something were to happen, James
would adopt the children. When James learned he might become a dad, he
talked with his parents about the possibility of moving home. Pat and Big
John were ecstatic about having their great grandchildren with them.

Two weeks before her due date, she was rushed to the hospital in labor.
While in labor, she developed an uncontrolled arrhythmia. The doctors
hurried to get the babies out by c-section but the mother passed away just
after the second child was delivered. James was now the proud papa to a boy
and a girl. The boy was named William John and the girl was named Patricia
Christine.

The day came when Jake made the walk to get his high school diploma. We were
all there and there wasn't a dry eye amongst us as he ended up graduating
suma cum laude. Jake had received a full academic scholarship to the
University of Miami. Since Jeremy finally decided on going there too, he
took a year off until the twins graduated so they would all be in the same
year. When he entered UM, he went for a degree in education with a minor in
science. He worked hard and was able to complete his undergrad work in three
years then went on and got his Masters degree. Billy recommended him for a
teaching position at Castle and when Jake showed the Headmaster his Masters
Degree, he was quickly hired.

Finally the time came for the twins to receive their diplomas and although
they didn't do like Jake, they were both magna cum laude grads. During
Aaron's senior year in high school, he went to Miami Dade Community College
and became an EMT. This was his first step in getting ready for the Fire
Department. Jeremy entered UM studying for a degree in biology while Aaron
went on and majored in Fire Science.

When the senior class started their march towards the stage, we all waited
patiently to hear the twins' names called. Their names should have been one
of the first called in the M's but they weren't. We were all wondering just
what was going on until we heard Aaron Taylor then Jeremy Taylor. After we
found them the twins hugged us then said that this was their graduation gift
to Dad and us. They had contacted Jess Martin and had him secretly arrange
for the legal name change. The twins had managed to keep this a secret from
all of us for over five months. Dad smiled at the twins, "It looks like the
Taylor name will continue."

Aaron graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA and was accepted into the Fire
Academy with recommendations from, Dad, Ace and myself. After a hard year at
the academy, Aaron graduated number three in his class. Dad was still able
to fit in his dress uniform and he proudly pinned Aaron's shield on his
chest. Aaron became the third person from our family to carry on the
tradition of becoming a firefighter. After Dad pinned his shield on Aaron
then I had the honors of pinning on his gold wings. I think what made us the
proudest was watching him take off on his very first call. I was now a
Captain with Air Rescue so I could keep an eye on him but as I later
learned, it wasn't really necessary.

Jeremy was accepted into medical school and started working on becoming a
pediatrician. Dad and I got a double dose of watching Jeremy graduate. First
there was his college graduation and then it was when he graduated second in
his class at UM Medical School as Jeremy Mitchell Taylor, M.D.

Aaron was there in his Uniform and Jake in a tux. It seemed the three of
them had a big night of celebrating to do and I don't think sleep was on the
agenda. Oh to be young again. Jeremy then was accepted at Miami Children's
Hospital where he did his Pediatric Residency. After completing the program,
he was offered a position on staff. Of course Joey decided Jeremy had to be
his doctor. It was nice that he didn't get sick all that often and he had
the only doctor around that made house calls.

Dad finally had to slow down a little. He was having a few little aches and
pains every now and then and Jeremy finally convinced him he needed a
checkup. I'd been watching his blood pressure but now it was to the point
where he needed medication to control it and he had to really watch what he
ate.

Joey was now in his first year of high school at Castle and was having a
tough time deciding what he wanted to do with his life. When Joey started
his junior year at Castle, he wanted to sit down with all the adults in his
life to bounce something off us. He told us that he really enjoyed helping
his bothers when they got hurt but didn't think he could handle college then
medical school to become a doctor. He said the thought of cutting into
someone really grossed him out. Jeremy heard what Joey had said and
suggested he think about possibly becoming a nurse.

Joey looked at Jeremy and said, "No offense, but aren't male nurses looked
upon as being gay?"

Now Joey's sexuality finally settled itself in his sophomore year. He had
seen a cute girl in his English class and finally got up the nerve to ask
her out. They dated off and on that entire year when they just seemed to
grow apart and decided to break up. He was straight and wasn't offended by
his curiosity when he was younger but it was something he didn't want to try
any more. "Not at all Joey," Jeremy replied. "The only connotations of
someone being gay are when they either act like it in public or they let
their co-workers know. If you want to be a nurse, I think you would do a
fine job because you like helping people. You certainly showed it here with
your brothers."

Well, that gave Joey a lot to think about. Right before his senior year, he
came to us and told us he was indeed looking forward to a career in nursing.
Right after he started his senior year, he met a girl who was planning on
going to UM to major in preschool education. They continued seeing each
other through the summer and then in college. At the end of their freshmen
year, Joey and Samantha were home for the summer when he popped the question
to her.

I had been watching television when the phone rang and it was John tell us
of the impending nuptials. Samantha wanted to be a June bride so they were
married the following year. Jake surprised the couple with his wedding gift.
He gave the bride and groom his grandmother's house that way it would always
remain in the family. The following year they graduated and Joey is working
in the adolescent unit at Miami Children's Hospital. Samantha had a surprise
for us all too and that was she was pregnant with their first child.

Joey took advantage of the fact that he had a scholarship and didn't need
Dad to pay for his education. Instead, he asked him if he could use the
money to pay off Sam's student loans. Of course there was no objection to
the request and he and his wife could raise their child very comfortably.
That Christmas, Jeremy brought his nephew into the world. Joseph John
William Phillips was born on December 22 weighing 6 pounds 10 ounces and was
delivered naturally. Pat and Big John were in attendance as their great
grandson was born as was Dad. Billy cried as Joey cut the cord bringing yet
another member into the family.

Just after New Years Dad suffered a mild heart attack and was hospitalized.
Now Dad wasn't a good patient. He was bossy to the nurses and thought he
knew more than his doctor until Jeremy came in and read him the riot act. We
all love Dad and wanted him to be able to get better so he could see his
great grandson grow up.

Unfortunately, such was not the case. Dad had managed to see the new century
but four days after his first one, he had a major heart attack. While the
doctors were working on him, Robert and I talked it over then I told them to
stop and let him be at peace. It was the hardest thing either of us ever had
to do but we wanted to remember Dad as he was so on January 12, 2001, Simon
"Buck" Taylor passed away.

Dad was 93 years old and had brought a lot of joy and happiness into our
lives. He plucked me out of a fire, adopted me, raised me and taught me
about life and love. He fostered my lover and life partner Robert, after
saving him from sure death. The only regret I have from that day almost 40
years ago was that his sister didn't survive. He and Ace rescued Billy and
got Linda to have Pat and Big John foster him. He showed John how to make
love to Billy that first time and watched as they grew into two fine men.

The day of his funeral was one I will never forget. He was given full honors
by the Miami Dade Fire Department and his casket was placed on top of an
engine for the ride to the cemetery. I knew my Dad was watching over us but
we just could not stop crying as we watched him lowered into his final
resting place. I owe so much to my Dad that to this day, it has never fully
been repaid but I will always strive to.

After Dad's death, Billy and John decided to move in with Robert and me
giving their house to Jake and the twins. Jeremy adopted an 11 year old boy
named Brian that Aaron brought into the Emergency Room one evening after his
father almost beat him to death in a drunken rage.

Six months after Brian's adoption was final, we got a call from James
telling us that both Pat and Big John had passed away quietly in their
sleep. We all made the sad trip out to California to lay them to rest. Pat
and Big John were like second parents to Robert and me. Pat was the Mom I
needed and Robert so wanted. When Dad dropped us there when he was called
into work, Big John became like our second Dad and we really grew to love
them as parents too.

We stayed out there for a week helping James go through the house removing
their clothes. James decided not to sell the house even though it was larger
than he needed. Joey suggested he hire a maid service to come in weekly and
clean for him and James took his advice. James hasn't married yet but has
dated a number of women. I am hoping he will so that he would give John and
Billy another grandson. I learned shortly after Pat and Big John's death
that James adopted another set of fraternal twins. They were both 12 and
took an instant liking for William and Patricia. The boy was named Gregory
and the girl was named Dana.

Little did we know but Joey and Sam didn't take Jeremy's advice about the
pill. The end of that year, Sam gave birth to a beautiful little girl.
Samantha Anne Phillips was born on Dec. 15 weighing 5 pounds 14 ounces and
delivered naturally. LJ (or little John) was two when his sister was born
and wanted to play big brother no sooner than she was out. Look out world;
don't go near LJ's little sister.

After the birth of Samantha, Aaron got the chance to adopt a 10 year old boy
named Dennis that had been physically abused. It took some major work but
almost a year after Aaron became Dennis' foster parent, he was now his new
Dad.

As I sit here in my office nearing my retirement as Deputy Chief of the Air
Rescue Division of Miami Dade Fire Rescue Department, I look upon the life
I've had and wonder if I had to do it over again, would I do anything
differently.

I knew I was gay when Dad rescued me and I sucked him in the shower that
first time. I knew I wanted him for my lover when I had him make love to me
that first time too. When he rescued Robert, I fell totally and helpless in
love with him and we've been together ever since. Robert and I had great
times together with Billy and John as we grew, both as playmates and
sexually. I followed my dream and became a firefighter, pilot and paramedic.
Robert and I fostered two boys we later adopted and I helped John and Billy
foster then adopt Jake after I rescued him after that hurricane hit. Robert
and I are Grandparents to James' four children; Jeremy's 12 year old Brian,
Aaron's 11 year old son Dennis and Joey and Samantha's son and daughter.

I smile as I pick up my keys and turn off the lights in my office as I head
out to my Yukon. I say good bye to the oncoming shift then head home to
where my loving partner awaits. Would I change anything in my life? I know
it's not what most gay men would do but, it worked for me and I've been ever
so enriched by everything. Would I change anything? Hell no, I wouldn't
change a thing after the day I met the pilot.

The End

Authors Note: There you have it everyone. You've watched Buck, Shane,
Robert, John and Billy grow and continue their lives even having and raising
children to adult hood. I hope you have enjoyed this story as much as I have
had writing it.
