Recap of Chapter 5 of THE RUNAWAY AND THE DRAG QUEEN

That Sunday, Glenn and I took the train downtown to purchase some yarn for
an afghan I planned to crochet for Jenny's baby. We walked all over State
Street and found some interesting stores before finally getting the
supplies I needed. At one point, we went into an art supply store and
again I thought I saw Eddie with his mother. I pointed him out to Glenn
but by the time we got to that side of the store, they were gone.

After our shopping, we stopped to grab a bite and rest before heading
home. I told Glenn all about Eddie and our history so he would understand
my reaction. He asked if I still had feelings for him and I said no.
Eddie made no effort to even try to contact me after our run-in with the
police so I wanted nothing more to do with him. I was just surprised to
see him, if it actually was. We boarded our train back home and ran
straight to my room for some private time before Glenn went home. It felt
wonderful to be held by someone who really loved me.

THE RUNAWAY & THE DRAG QUEEN: CHAPTER SIX (6)

XAVIER

Glenn kept up his habit of escorting me to and from each of my classes. It
felt so special to have people looking at me, some with clear envy in their
eyes. We heard a few derogatory comments but were generally left alone.
As we got close to my gym class, the coach came out and saw us holding
hands. Mr. Iverson pulled us into his office and lectured us about being
gay and how wrong it was. Glenn was polite and told him that it really
wasn't his business. At that point, Mr. Iverson escorted both of us down
to the principal's office.

He started by telling Dr. Weathers that we were flaunting our deviant
lifestyle by holding hands in the hallways. He continued by saying how
Glenn had told him to mind his own business. Looking at us, Dr. Weathers
asked if we were a couple. Surprisingly for everyone, I answered that we
were and didn't care who knew. I also added that Glenn only said that our
relationship wasn't any of Mr. Iverson's business.

We were dismissed with Mr. Iverson giving both of us the worst glares as we
left. I overheard Dr. Weathers telling the coach that the school had an
anti-discrimination policy that he had to follow. He also said if Iverson
couldn't keep his prejudices to himself then he would find his employment
terminated. A meek reply can from the coach before I made certain we
weren't seen to be eavesdropping on the private conversation.

Gym period was already over by that point so we just headed to lunch. Our
friends asked why we were in Weathers' office. When we told them, Alyssa
said she had heard other students complain about his Bible-thumping,
anti-gay rampages. She figured we weren't the first students to call him
out on it. I related what we overheard and said that he was lucky he
hadn't been fired. Just as I finished, Coach Iverson walked up to our
table and asked to speak to us privately.

We told him he could say anything in front of our group. He then
apologized and promised that he wouldn't intrude any further into our
private lives. After shaking our hands, he continued his supervision of
the lunchroom. Once he was out of earshot, we all laughed at his sudden
reversal but were glad it was over. The rest of the day went by without any
more difficulty. Soon, Glenn and I were headed to his house to study.

Walking in the door, we found his mom sitting in the kitchen drinking some
coffee. She was dressed for her shift at a local restaurant and would be
leaving for work soon. This was my first meeting with her and I was
extremely nervous. Glenn explained who I was as he held my trembling hand.
She walked up, gave me a big hug and kiss, and said she was happy that I
was with Glenn. All she had ever desired was for him to be happy and she
could see that I did that for him. I thanked her and then she kissed Glenn
before heading off to work. He smiled at me before kissing me
passionately.

Grabbing a couple of sodas, we headed to his room to work on homework.
Once behind his door, he kissed me again and then took out his books to
start a paper he was assigned. I took my laptop and began roughing out an
art project for my computer graphics class. It was difficult for me to
concentrate knowing my lover was only a few feet from me. Several times I
caught him staring at me with a crooked smile on his face. I know I did
the same but really struggled to keep working.

After about an hour, my phone rang and the Caller ID showed it was Jeff. I
answered and explained that I was at Glenn's before apologizing for not
calling first. He only remarked that he had been worried but was glad I
was safe. I promised to be home after Glenn and I ate the stew his mother
had left for us. At that point, we both were burnt out studying so we got
cozy on his bed with the radio playing softly in the background.

It was so romantic being held and caressed by Glenn that we fell asleep
until almost 6pm. Getting up, we headed to the kitchen to eat laughing and
talking about our future. He saw us being together forever and I truly
hoped that would happen. I had never been this happy since Eddie was taken
from me and wanted to make a life with Glenn. When we finished eating, I
called to let Jeff know I was coming home. Kissing my boyfriend goodbye, I
headed towards my house in the early twilight.

I had just turned the first corner from Glenn's when I thought I heard
footsteps behind me. Feeling a little uneasy, I picked up my pace, hoping
that it was only my imagination. The noises followed and sped up as I did
so I started to run. Just as I turned the final corner on my own block, I
stumbled and fell. The next thing I remember was being grabbed by a dark
shadow and thrown against a wood fence.

Looking up, I saw the face of Zach Titian, one of Coach Iverson's football
playing goons. He was known to be very anti-gay since his father ran off
with another man. Scowling at me, he spat out how perverted I was and he
would fix me for getting his teacher in trouble. The next few minutes were
a blur until I heard our neighbor, Mrs. Leavitt, screaming for help as she
saw what was happening. She came over with her phone to her ear as she
asked for police. I smiled at her before blacking out in her arms.

JEFF

I answered my phone expecting it to be Roger but it was Mrs. Leavitt. She
quickly explained what she had seen and said police were coming to get me.
As we were talking, my doorbell rang and it was two officers informing of
the attack on Xavier. They said they would escort me to the hospital so I
hung up with Mrs. Leavitt and grabbed my coat. Putting me in the back of a
squad car, we arrived at the emergency room and I was taken to the
admissions desk. Letting them know who I was there for, they had me wait
while they paged a doctor. I quickly called Glenn and Roger, both of who
promised to come immediately, even though I didn't ask them.

The doctor came out and saw me crying in my hands. He greeted me just as
Roger came in the room. He sat next to me and took my hand as the doctor
began telling me of the extent of the injuries. Xavier has suffered
multiple contusions and cuts as well as three cracked ribs, a broken nose,
and a partially collapsed right lung. The doctor assured me that nothing
was life-threatening but would require time to heal properly. He then
added that we could see Xavier just as soon as he got into his room.

The officers stopped to talk and said that Mrs. Leavitt had recognized the
person attacking Xavier and given them his name so others were heading to
pick him up. He would be most likely be charged with assault and battery,
attempted murder and a hate crime. I thanked them for their time before
collapsing against Roger and crying hysterically. Just then, Glenn came in
looking frantic until Roger calmed him down. As we waited, a woman in a
waitress uniform came in and Glenn ran to hug her. He introduced his
mother to both of us as we filled them in on the attack.

We waited for about fifteen minutes until a nurse said they were taking
Xavier to a private room. I asked if all of us could accompany him and
said we were all his family. She took us back as the orderly was prepping
the bed to move upstairs. Xavier looked to frail with all the bandages and
IV's attached to him. The nurse indicate that he had been sedated to ease
the pain as we followed behind the bed to his room. Once there, we waited
until he was set up before moving inside. I took one of his hands and
Glenn took his other one. We stayed until visiting hours were over before
I shooed everyone out but me.

Glenn wanted to stay but his mother thought it best for him to go home and
rest. She promised to stop by in the morning before telling him that he
could miss school tomorrow. He sweetly kissed Xavier's cheek and hand
before heading out with his mom's arm around his shoulder. Roger simply
refused to leave me alone and stayed with me all night. The room actually
had two beds but was going to made secure for Xavier's safety. Pulling me
up, Roger made me lie down while he held me until I drifted off to an
uneasy sleep. I woke up around 2am to find him sitting and holding
Xavier's hand and mine as he sat between us. This man was definitely a
keeper and was going to get his reward once everything was less hectic. I
fell back to sleep and woke to find I was back in Roger's warm arms. It was
about 7am at that point when Roger smiled and kissed me.

He called the school to talk to Dr. Weathers and explained what had
occurred and that he would be off today. The principal understood and
asked to be kept informed. A nurse came in to take some blood and check
Xavier's vitals. She smiled at Roger and I curled in the neighboring
bed. I started to explain and she said her brother was gay and she
understood. Roger ran down to fetch some doughnuts and tea as I called
work to let them know I needed the day off. My boss was extremely
cooperative and said to let him know when I would be back.

Around 9 that morning, Glenn and his mom returned to check on Xavier. As
we sat there, the attending doctor came in to update the test result.
Apparently, one of the broken ribs had caused the collapsed lung but
luckily not any further damage. They had reset his nose and the ribs until
they had better X-rays. He left after assuring us that everything would
heal after some recovery time. Glenn's mom had to get to her day job so
she left him with us. A few seconds later, an orderly came to take Xavier
for an MRI so we headed down to eat a real meal.

Talking over our food, we ending up laughing about the silliest things
before going back to the room. As we neared the door, an officer called
out saying he needed to talk to us. Finding a private waiting area, we
went in and sat down. He explained that they had arrested a fellow student
who was found still wearing the bloody clothes from the assault. They
confirmed that it was, in fact, a hate crime motivated by the problem at
school with Coach Iverson. The lead detective even suspected that the
teacher had put this individual onto Xavier's tail as payback. He gave me
a case information sheet before heading back to the precinct.

GLENN

I watched Xavier walk down the street and turned to finish working on my
history paper. It had been such a lovely afternoon having him here with me
even if we didn't fool around. After about an hour, I realized that Xavier
never called to let me know he made it home safely. I picked up my phone
but only got his voice mail. Thinking he simply forgot, I started to watch
a little television when the phone rang. It was Jeff calling from the
hospital to tell me Xavier had been attacked. I found out where he was and
called my mom to let her know I was headed over there. She told me to go
and said she would get there as soon as she could. I ran next door and
asked my neighbor, Mr. Collier, if he could give me a ride to the hospital.
After explaining the reason, he dropped me off with good wishes for Xavier.

Entering the waiting room, I found Roger and Jeff holding each other. Jeff
looked distraught and started to tell me what happened when Mom entered. I
hugged her trying not to cry as Jeff explained what the doctor had told
him. We waited until they said they were moving him to a private room and
followed the orderly upstairs. He looked so weak and small with all the
gauze and tubes attached to him.

Once he was set up, I took a seat and gently held his right hand while Jeff
took his left. We talked quietly about what had happened and how bad the
injuries might be. At 8pm, the nurse came to tell us visiting hours were
over and everyone but Jeff needed to come back tomorrow. I really wanted
to stay but Mom promised to bring me back in the morning rather than send
me to school. She took me home and gave me some tea, sitting in my room
until I finally fell asleep.

My mind created a truly horrible dream where Xavier had been beaten and
left for dead. It was like watching a movie as he was struck repeatedly and
thrown around the ground. I could hear the fists landing and even heard
his nose break. He was bleeding from many cuts and his face was beginning
to swell. As he hit the ground, his stomach and back were kicked and
pummeled with just as much fury. Finally, the attacker ran off after being
interrupted by a passerby. I woke in a cold sweat thinking it wasn't real.

After using the bathroom, I headed to the kitchen to find Mom on the phone
with my school, telling them I would be out today. I knew that my dream
was real and started to cry until Mom took me in her arms. Making me eat
some waffles with tea, she then told me to get dressed and took me to see
Xavier. She only stayed a few minutes before heading to her day job,
leaving me with Jeff and Roger. We talked while watching him sleep when an
orderly came in to take Xavier for an MRI.

Knowing he would be gone for a little time, we headed down to eat a little
something in the cafeteria. As we ate, stories were told until we began
laughing. It felt good to remember the happier times as we tried to deal
with the tragedy. Heading upstairs, a police officer asked to speak in
private so we went to a small seating room. He explained they had picked
up the attacker in the same clothes he had been wearing during the attack.
Adding that it had to do with a problem with Coach Iverson, I immediately
suspected that it was one of his little lap dogs on the football team. The
officer also indicated that the detective had been led to believe that the
coach was somehow involved but they needed a little more proof. He left an
information and contact sheet before heading back to the precinct.

Returning to the room, Xavier was back from his test and just waking up.
He slowly turned and saw me, smiling weakly. I crossed the room and
tenderly kissed his cheek before taking my place at his right side. Jeff
went around and grabbed his other hand before sitting down next to him.
Roger smiled and sat on the arm of Jeff's chair. Xavier saw this and
seemed to giggle before the pain hit him. We sat and talked to him until
the doctor came in to check him out.

Once the exam was done, he asked to speak privately with us in another
room. The MRI had not been completely read but seemed to indicate a slight
skull fracture as well as one in his right arm. It also revealed some
bruising of his kidneys along with severe swelling. Neither of these would
need surgery but would require closer monitoring and a small arm cast. The
blood tests indicated that the internal injuries weren't adversely
affecting his overall health. He would be given antibiotics as a
preventative measure.

We finished and we spent most of the day just sitting and watching him
sleep. Mom stopped by after work to take us for a quick dinner. After
eating, I went upstairs to wish Xavier a good night before heading home to
get some sleep. Exhausted and upset, Mom did say I would have to return to
school the next day. She gave me some relaxing chamomile tea before
sending me off to bed. I tossed and turned before finally passing out due
to being stressed and over-tired.
