Thumpers Adventures 7

My Grandpa was like you should do your best to stay friends with Red,
Thumper. I said we are friends we play baseball together and stuff. I said
he's cool and all that. Grandpa doesn't push the issue, he gets some Ice
Cream too and we watch some TV.

I went back in the kitchen and fixed a sandwich got a glass of milk and
went to my room. It was all I could do to get up to deliver papers and on
top of it that crazy milk delivery guy. That guy just creeps me out, I can
usually avoid him but it was like every turn he was there. My head hurt a
little bit I was tired and the last time I ran into the freak I said just
stay the crap away from me weirdo. He gave me this crazy ass smile and got
in the milk truck and drove off.

I got home and told my Grandpa about the weird milk man, he listened
intently as always to what I was saying and then told me to get some rest.
He then asked if I was gonna go to Red's place today. I said no, I had to
work in Mrs. Jones yard today. Mrs Jones is a looker according to my
Grandpa. She works at the law office where her husband was a partner. He
died in a car crash. All the old lady's say she's loaded and doesn't need
to work. She drives a new Cadillac has a son in college and one grown
married daughter. The son in college is going to law school and is a total
shit head. Yep I said it. He's a spoiled rich kid with a nasty mouth and a
better than anyone else attitude. Mrs Jones always had a cigarette going
wore sexy hi heels and short skirts , to short according to my Grandma
anyway.

I cut the grass every week trim the shrubs every month and work the flower
beds once a month. She says that it's just to much to get done with out
help. She pays good always more than she is supposed too. She always says
thanks about a jillion times and smiles and brings me lemonade and stuff.

I headed that way and went to work. No one was home when I got there but I
knew my way around well. I knew what to do and got busy doing it. I left
and went home to get some lunch, came back and worked on the yard till it
was time to deliver the afternoon papers.

My afternoon route boss was at the drop. He wanted to know how things were
going and all that. I told him that I really wanted to stop doing the
afternoon route and that I had a buddy that wanted the route. I was tired
of working all the time and the afternoon route didn't really make me
enough money for the time it took.

I gave the boss my buddy's name and phone number and he left , obviously
not happy with me. I finished up the paper route and went to the house. My
Grandma was there and said the paper boss came by and she certainly wishes
she had been told first that I didn't want to deliver the papers any more.
I didn't tell her because she would have fussed me out and made me keep
delivering it.

It was hot dog night,,, french fries too,, dinner was just that,, my
grandparents were heading out to visit and that I needed to be home by 11
as expected.

I got on my bike and headed to Chase's place. It was dark again, I knocked
and knocked but there was no one at home. I went to the High's Ice Cream
Store and got a milkshake. The guy that worked in there with the 2 old
lady's was nice,he went to the local college. He was working cause he had
to. I liked him, he was always nice to me. He asked me what I was up too. I
said that I couldn't find my buddies, that I would probably hang out at the
ball field for a little while. He said cool, that he walks home by there he
would keep an eye out for me.

I left after finishing up my shake, and rode off to the park. It was after
all the best place to find something to do. I rode to the ball field and no
one was around. I rode to the playground and other than a couple of loser's
nothing. I rode my bike up the alley and stuck it in the bushes and walked
back to the end of the alley and just hung out. I wanted to watch the
bathroom like Chase had told me to see what I could see. I decided to just
watch for a while.

It was just past dark, a car pulled up the lights went out and no one got
out. I sat and watched from my vantage point. I watched a second car pull
up and the lights went out. Then the brake lights came on and went off.
Then the brake lights flashed again. I saw the guy get out and walk to the
bathroom. Then the first guy gets out and walks to the bathroom. Both were
middle aged men. They both went in and after a short period they left. They
didn't waste any time either , they got in there cars and hauled off.

In a hour or so I watched this same thing happen several times. The show up
flash some lights and then meet in the bathroom. Seems to me that you want
to go in with someone verses meeting in there.

I was on my way back to the house on my bike and rode down to the ball
field. I saw a guy sitting on the bleachers and I rode over that way. It
was the guy from the Ice Cream store. I rode up and said hey. He said I was
fixing to head home didn't think you would show. I said well I was up near
the playground and was heading home. He asked where I lived and I told him.
He said he rented a garage apartment and told me where it was. It was about
3 blocks from my house. I said why don't you live on campus? He said it was
to expensive to live on campus. That he wasn't one of the rich kids at the
school. That he didn't really fit in with them and that living off campus
was just easier. He said do you get "hi" ? I said yea, sometimes, seems
that it's happening more lately tho. He laughed and said well come by if
you want too.

I said I gotta be home by 11 or I'll get grounded. He said well I'm usually
up late, I don't get off till 10 usually, I said well I'll swing by
sometime see if your around. He said if I'm home the porch light is off,
just remember that if I'm home the garage porch light is off.

I hustled off and pedaled hard to make it home, I used the outside entrance
to the bedroom and as I was getting done in the bathroom lights came up the
drive. Everyone was home now. Grandma called me to the steps to give her a
good night kiss, that meant a peck on the cheek. Really it meant that she
wanted to make sure I was at home.

The alarm went off way to early again. I was finishing up the route and saw
Chase fast walking up the street, I rode up and said hey. He was beat to
shit. I said dude what happened to you? He said bad drug deal. Couple of
Freeman boys took his money and his pot and then beat the crap outta him. I
helped him to the house and inside. I washed him up in the downstairs
bathroom.

I helped him upstairs and got him in bed, told him I would be back after a
while to check on him. Then I slipped out of the house. I went home and sat
down to breakfast. My Grandpa asked if I saw the milk man today. I said
nope, don't usually see him mostly try to avoid him. Grandpa never brings
up anything without a reason. I didn't ask, he was just pondering over his
coffee.

I had some yard chores to get done, so I went to work on them right away.
Better to get things done on time. I saw the afternoon paper guy show up
and talk to my Grandpa then he came out back and said that he had arranged
to have my route taken over by someone else. He needed my book and my last
collections and we got our money straight as my Grandpa looked on.

He thanked me for all the good work and that he would give me a good
reference if I ever wanted one. My Grandpa seemed pleased by that alot. We
shook hands man style and said our good bye's. My route was no longer my
route. I had some free time now.

He left and I went to work on my chores again. Grandpa was in the shop when
Grandma hollered at him and said to come to the house. He went to the house
cause when she used that voice , someone better be coming quick.

After a few minutes Red came out back, he said whats going on Thumper. I
said finishing up my chores, got rid of my afternoon paper route, it was
just to much to many days a week. Red says to me, my Dad's talking to your
Grandpa about you working at the lumber yard, afternoon and weekends.

I said do what? He said yea he liked you and that you couldn't focus on
sports working all the time. Besides he needs someone he can trust to do
cleanup on Saturdays. I said a real job, man that would be so cool.

After a little while the men came outside both with coctail glasses in
hand. Grandpa was beaming I could see my Grandma at the kitchen window and
she opened up the window to hear what was going on. Red's dad shook my hand
and commented how I shook like a man, Grandpa's smile got bigger. He said
Thumper, I want to offer you a job, a job working at the lumber yard
helping out with things afternoons and on Saturdays half days, Till you get
your drivers license you can ride with Red here, or even after.

He gave me a long winded speech about responsibility and respect for
customers and how he always encouraged hard working athletes to be
sucessful. I was beside my self a real job a real daytime job no more
getting up at four am rain sleet snow and complaining customers.

Red and I were grinning like a couple of school girls. My Grandpa and Red's
Dad went back inside to talk. I knew the paper manager was gonna be pissed
but who cares. I called him up from the workshop phone and gave him the bad
news. He took it better than I had expected. Saying that there were several
guys looking for routes and could I give him a week or two to fill the
route. I said sure, Grandpa had told me to offer that.

I got to go out to Julian's with Red's family for dinner and then Red and I
rode around in the Camero till eleven pm.

We pulled up our driveway and Red said what ya gonna do now? I said
probably go to sleep I guess. He said want to get "hi" first. I said sure
why not. I direct him to the back yard to the area behind my Grandpa's
shop. We smoke up several times. Not gonna lie ,, I was stoned and
horny,,,, I told Red,, that!
