"Touched by an Angel" Chapters 1-4

Chapter 1

"Aww man...not again!" I said as another attempt to cook a decent scrambled egg
was foiled.  Cooking eggs was about one of the few things that I could not do;
something would always go wrong. Either I would cook them too little and they
would float about in the frying pan or I would cook them too fast and the vast
majority would get stuck to the pan. I hated scrubbing the eggs off the
pan...that was nasty.

This time I had gotten them stuck to the pan again. I stood there looking
at the eggs. They seemed to stare back at me as if they were mocking my
inability to properly prepare them. Disgruntled, I dumped the eggs into the
trash can. It was 11:00 AM; I could find a breakfast diner somewhere where I
could get a decent meal.

I put on my coat and sneakers and proceeded out of my small New York City
apartment. Despite going to a rather good university, I had decided to become a
writer of books about psychology which isn't what you would call a dependable
job if you want a solid weekly salary. My writing wasn't coming particularly
well at that time so I was short on the greenbacks.

I walked into Blimpie's and ordered a chicken sandwich and also took out a
small bottle of Tropicana orange juice. I paid the cashier and took my regular
seat at the back of the establishment. I liked to sit in the back because it
would give me a good view of any people coming in and out of the diner and also
would leave me in solitude where I would ponder any ideas I would have for
stories. I finished my meal and was on my way back to the apartment when my old
friend Marty saw me on the way.

"Hey wassup Pat?" Marty chimed.

"Nothing much. I still can't think of anything to write about." I explained.

"Hey man, you chose the career." Marty pointed out.

"Yeah I guess you're right but it at least allows me to be creative. Too bad I
can't create dollars as well as ideas for my psychological books."

At that Marty gave a small laugh. Marty and I had been friends since the third
grade. At one time we were real close but then I decided to basically keep all
my friends equal since we were more of a sports-playing crowd and would always
be playing in large groups. We wouldn't come over each other's houses and just
hang out as some kids would. Instead, our friends and we would spend endless
hours in the park playing tackle football. Marty didn't go to college. Instead
he went to the Marines for four years in active service and was now a reserve in
the Marines and an officer of the NYPD.

"Speaking of plots," Marty said, "why don't you come with Christian and me to
see a movie tonight?"

I considered the offer...a movie would help to get my mind off writing
about psychology and yet might actually spark me with a few ideas.

"Sure, I'll go." I said. "Are you guys gonna pick me up or...?"

"We'll be there." He responded.

Chapter 2

The evening arrived and it was about time for Marty and Christian to come
to pick me up. I had decided to shower before the movie. I turned up the water
and got into the shower. I stood underneath the sprinkler as the warm jets of
water sprayed my neck and back. The feel of the water was invigorating. I
loved the feel of the water massaging my back muscles and relieving all the
strain. I began to rub the shampoo into my hair. At that time I had let the
top of my hair grow longer than the rest of the hair on my head so it was like a
mushroom cut but not really. Anyway, I liked to keep my hair clean so I
proceeded to rub in the shampoo and then cleansed it off with the water. I
soaped up the rest of my body and then let the gentle spray wash it off. I got
out of the tub and dried off. Then I checked myself out in the mirror.
Although I was not at all attracted to men my age, I could tell I was definitely
on the better looking side if men. I was not hot at all but I was definitely on
the better side. I was a solid six feet tall and weighed a steady 175 pounds.
I had blue eyes and dark blonde hair.

After drying off I began to dress. I put on my better pair of jeans that
were as baggy as they could be for a 24-year old without me looking stupid. I
also put on a XXXL white t-shirt that was one of my favorite things to wear. It
was about four days before Thanksgiving and therefore I would need a jacket
since the nights could get chilly. I put on my sneakers and sat down to watch
some TV before my buds came to pick me up. It was 5:45 and they were due to
show up at about 6:00.

I turned on the TV on a random channel and sat down on my comfy couch.
The program was a romance movie about young people. As a matter of fact, it
seemed to follow a Romeo and Juliet type of storyline because from what I could
tell, the two lovers' parents deeply disliked each other.

I turned off the TV at about 5 mins to 6:00 and went about looking for any
cash I could spend on a movie. I ravaged my bookshelf looking for a few bucks
when a twenty finally turned up. As I looked about for my wallet, I turned on
my CD player, which was probably the only thing in my apartment of much monetary
value and it was given to me by a friend after I graduated college. I pressed
the play button and it played the first song on the CD that was inside. As it
turned out, it was one of my favorite songs: "Truly Madly Deeply" by Savage
Garden. I listened to the tune as I waited for my friends to call. "I want to
stand with you on a mountain. I want to bathe with you in the sea. I want to
lay like this forever, until the sky falls down on me." The song's words were
beginning to sink in and I lay on the bed thinking of what these words meant to
me. I had never had a person in my life to whom I could say these words to and
mean it. The first time I had ever heard and understood these words was the
first time I ever went to a Mets game as sophomore in high school. Since then I
had yet to have a person to love in my life.

RING-DLING! The bell sounded. I turned off the music and got my coat.
Peering through the little peep hole at the door, I recognized Marty and
Christian at the door. I opened the door and greeted my two friends. Then I
got my keys and off we were to the movies.

Chapter 3

We saw a movie that was basically a comedy that had some sad parts in it.
After it ended it was kind-of late so my friends went home by themselves since
they lived close together. On the other hand, I had to take the subway home by
myself. It was near 11 AM and the particular train I was on had barely any
people on it so I decided to move up to the very front of the train by simply
moving from car to car as the train moves on since my exit would be where the
front of my train would stop. As I got to the first car I noticed there was a
person all bundled up sitting on one of the seats sideways with his knees to his
chest and obviously asleep with his head resting partially on his arms which
were bundled up on his knees. The person looked to be a young boy or girl of 12
or 13. I thought it was a girl since long blonde hair was spread all over the
person's blue jacket. I lived in a neighborhood that was in rather decent
condition but if this kid stayed asleep on this train it would eventually pass
into neighborhoods that were pretty rough...especially at night. Therefore I
decided to awaken my sleeping little friend. I put my hand on the kid's
shoulders and nudged a little till the kid woke up.

"Hey. Pretty late to be on the train alone wouldn't you say?" I asked.

"Are you a cop?" The kid replied.

"No, I just thought you'd like to be up because I'm sure your stop is before you
get into the rough parts of town. Where are your parents?"

"I don't live with my parents. They don't want me."

As I studied this child I noticed a few things. Despite the girly figure
of the kid, he was in fact a boy and not a girl as I had assumed. He was a
pretty boy at that too. You could easily see this kid was not exactly well
cared for; his hair was all tangled up and he looked as if he hadn't eaten in a
day or so. However, despite his lack of grooming, one could also see I had
before me a beautiful creature. He looked to be about 5'4 or so but I wasn't
sure because he was sitting. He looked to be slightly on the skinny side and
had long blonde hair and a beautiful face. His lips were also another thing
that attracted me to him...there was something about them that just begged to be
kissed.

"What do you mean your parents don't want you? Do they know you are out at this
time at your age? You can't be more than 13."

"Good guess. I bet you know my age better than my mom does. She doesn't care
about me."

"What about your dad?"

"I don't have a Dad. He took off when I was really small and I don't even
remember him."

My stop was nearing but yet something was telling me to talk to this boy.
Okay, maybe that something was the fact that he looked gorgeous but that's
beside the point.

"Well I can't let you stay on this train in the middle of nowhere. You can come
to my place if you want."

"Are you sure? You wouldn't want me around."

"Yeah why not? I need a little company every now and then." As the train stopped
he stood up and picked up a little duffel bag from underneath the seat.

"What's the bag for?"

"I got some personal stuff there."

That seemed sufficient to me. I didn't particularly care what he had in
the bag so long as I got to my house to rest. I also was completely absorbed by
this youth and I intended to care for him as best as I could for the night until
we could sort this whole thing out in the morning.

Chapter 4

We got to my humble apartment house and I opened the door.

"A little messy but it's home." I said as I introduced the little guy to my
living quarters.

I put my coat into the closet and asked him if he wanted me to hang his
up. He said okay and so I did so. I looked at the cutie and he was having
himself a look around my home.

"Wow, sure beats the train." He said.

"You slept in a train?" I asked.

"Sure, I had to sleep somewhere after my mom threw me out." He explained.

"I don't believe she threw you out. How could she not want a nice kid like you?"

"My mom hates me. She doesn't want me and she's glad to be rid of me."

I still wasn't sure about his story but I asked him if he wanted to
shower. He gladly took me up on the offer but said he didn't have any extra
shirts. I said he could wear one of mine.

"By the way, I never got your name." I said.

"Jaimie...Jaimie Fitcher." He said.

"My name is Patrick." I told him. I thought it was good that I got his name so I
could at least ask about him to the authorities to see if he is a runaway and
see if maybe he lives around here. His mother may have been worried sick.

Jaimie went in to take a shower as I began tidying up a little and
preparing a place Jaimie could sleep. I had only 2 major rooms in my apartment:
a medium living room and bedroom, a small kitchen and a bathroom. Throughout my
apartment were scattered papers about books I was working on and the
whole area was somewhat of a mess. I prepared Jaimie a place on the couch. I
had an extra blanket and a pillow that I gave him.

At about the time I finished tidying up, Jaimie exited the bathroom. I
now saw him in his full glory. This boy was gorgeous to say the least! He was
wearing white boxers with my oversized white t-shirt that was near his knees.
He was barefoot and had his hair tied in a ponytail. Quite simply, the boy was
to die for. He walked over to me and dumped his pile of clothes by the couch.

"Say do you have anything I could eat?" He asked.

"Sure, I got some stuff. Lemme check."

I didn't really keep much food in the house since I ate out a lot. I had
some eggs but I dared not try to cook those now considering the disasters that
had occurred with them before. All I had was milk and leftover Chinese rice
from a day ago.

"I got this rice if you want it. It's from a couple of days back though."

"Sure I'll have that. I'm very hungry `cause I didn't eat all day."

I loaded the stuff into the microwave and poured him a tall glass of milk.
After it was ready I prepared it for him.

"You sit here and chow I'm going to take a shower."

I took some spare clothes with me and went inside the bathroom. I took
one of the quickest showers ever because I was afraid I would open the door to
not only find my cute boy missing but to also find that he stole money. I
thought to myself, though, that he didn't know where I kept my cash. As for
appliances, I had hardly anything of value besides my microwave and cd player.
I was really more concerned with the fact that his cute little body would not be
there after I was done.

After my shower was over I quickly dried up and opened the bathroom door.
Sure enough, I found Jaimie still sitting there finishing his food. In that
case I went to make my bed and came back to find him washing his dishes. At
least he had manners, I thought.

"Thanks for the food man." He said.

"It's okay. I'm gonna go to sleep now so you're gonna have to go too."

"No problem I'm way tired!" He said.

At that, I walked into my room and, in a few minutes, I was lying in bed.

"Sweet dreams." He said.

"Same to you." I said...same to you.
