Chapter #5

I was deep in thought about the house and Troy when Rob turned towards me.

"You want to stop and get something to eat before we get to your place Mike,
I'm kind of hungry."

"Sure." I said, thankful for the diversion. "How about Chinese or Mongolian?
There's a restaurant we pass before reaching the on ramp that's called
Mongolian Hash that we can stop at."

"I don't know, that's one of those places where you fix your own isn't it?"
Rob said.

"No, not really. Can you see a bunch of people standing around with woks
trying to fix all of the vegetables and seasonings and then combine them
with different meats and seafood? I think their liability insurance premiums
would be out of sight. You pick out what you think you will like from a
smorgasbord and their chef's fix it. I really like the pork fried rice they
fix." I said glancing at him.

Rob still looked a little apprehensive but he agreed and we had our dinner
there. I didn't make a very good dinner companion what with Troy more on my
mind then the shrimp fried rice I was eating.

Troy's fleeting look of disappointment when he saw Rob standing in the
bedroom, haunted me, and then the forlorn way he looked back through the
window as he left. I very probably had embarrassed him by mentioning his
clothes and Rob, however innocently, made it worse by agreeing with me.

"He's trouble Mike." Rob said softly leaning over the table and patting my
hand.

"He, who, what. . . . . ?" I answered, startled from my thoughts.

"From the way you have been playing with your fried rice Mike, I'd say you
had lost your appetite or had taken a long trip because you certainly
haven't been having dinner with me."

"I'm sorry Rob, I've been thinking about meeting with Tony tomorrow and
about the work I want done."

"Huh, huh and I've been thinking about Prince William." Rob said with a
twinkle in his eye. "If you're finished, would you mind running me back to
the Lodge. I can think up something to tell the guys."

"Geez Robby, I am sorry as hell. I've been thinking about everything except
that. You don't have to go back too the lodge, we can work something out."

"I appreciate it Mike but I think it is best this way. You have more then
enough to be worried with when you and Tony get started on the house and I
never know when they are going to send me out or change assignments. I won't
forget this Mongolian stuff though, maybe we can try it again next time I'm
around." He said squeezing my hand, his blues eyes calm and perceptive.

Neither one of us said very much on the way back to the Navy Lodge until we
were about a half a block from the driveway and Rob said,

"Mike, don't pull inside the enclosure. Stop outside and I'll carry my
things in."

"Okay if that's what you want Rob."

After I stopped, Rob & I took his things out of the back of the car and as I
was closing the trunk, he leaned over and kissed me on the cheek.

"You be careful Mike, you're too good to get messed up." He said almost in a
whisper and walked away before I could say anything.

I knew exactly what he meant.

When I got to my apartment, the answering machine light was blinking and a
message from Spunky was on it. "Hey you guys, why don't you get out of bed
and answer the telephone?.. . . . .They must not be in Ralph, didn't you say
Mike was picking Rob up after work?" I could hear Spunky asking Ralph and
then his answer, "I thought Rob said that Spunky, just tell'em we will call
later." After a short hesitation, "Did you get that Mike? When you get
time, call us or we will call you later." Spunky said and the phone line
went dead.

There were two more messages indicated but no message was left, just the
click of a phone hanging up after the automatic answering message. I didn't
recognize the number on the telephone I.D. but the area code was the same. I
dialed the number and waited as the phone rang, not knowing what to expect
until a soft feminine voice answered.

"Hello."

I hesitated, holding the phone, not recognizing the voice and then she spoke
again.

"This is Judith McKeon, is someone there?"

"Hello Mrs. McKeon, this is Mike Homan your neighbor. Sorry I held you up
there, I was trying to juggle a cup of coffee and use the phone at the same
time."

"That's not an easy task Mr. Homan, how can I help you. Troy has told me
about you buying the house and he and Sherman doing some work for you. I
hope they haven't been bothering you?"

"Oh no, on the contrary, I need some help cleaning the place up. I just
wanted to be sure that you and Sherman's parents know I've asked them to
give me a hand."

"I'm pretty sure Alice Altman knows Mr. Homan, Troy is over at Sherman's
now. I can't speak for the Altman's but I'm happy Troy has something to do
besides hang around the house. Ever since his father died he is at loose
ends being alone so much. I have to work and I can't attend a lot of the
school functions with him."

"That can happen Mrs. McKeon, I can remember when my father passed away. It
takes some time to get over it. I hope I wasn't interrupting but I wanted to
be sure you knew Troy would be over here tomorrow."

"He told me Mr. Homan but I do hope he isn't being a bother. Troy can be
overly aggressive sometimes but I'm happy he can be of some help too you.
I'll make sure he is on time. Thanks for calling me.

"My pleasure Mrs.McKeon and don't be concerned about Troy, he isn't any
trouble. I hope we can meet each other soon."

"I'm sure we will and please, call me Judith."

"Thanks Judith and you must call me Mike."

"Welcome too the neighborhood Mike, nice talking with you. I'll tell Troy
you called and remind him about tomorrow morning. Good night." She said,
hanging the phone up.

I stood holding the phone receiver for several minutes thinking, "Troy must
have made the two calls on the answering machine since his mother did not
indicate she had". I was deep in thought until an incessant intermittent
signal from the receiver reminded me to return it too its base.

The only reason I could think of for Troy to call was to confirm him and
Sherman cleaning out the garage but the instructions I had given were
explicit, he shouldn't have needed confirmation. I could ask him but I
didn't want to embarrass him by doing that. His eyes did have a look of
surprise and then disappointment when he saw Robert with me in the bedroom
and then the hurt look as he left. I probably was reading too much into it
but to be honest it bothered me seeing him upset.

Even in the company of Robert, a feeling of wanting Troy, needing him,
swelled inside of me deep in my gut but why was a little voice inside of my
head whispering, "boy lover, cradle snatching pedophile."

I had never been attracted too boys or any younger man in his teens at all
but there was something about Troy that pulled you. His unruly auburn hair
surrounding his face and his shining chocolate brown eyes seemed to talk
tauntingly, teasing, when he looked at you with a hint of a pixie smile. He
radiated a soft animal magnetism that was enveloping and it felt like he was
reading your thoughts. I knew deep inside of me what he wanted and I felt
the same way but I didn't understand why.

The almost clanging sound of the phone ringing wrenched me from my thoughts.
My wristwatch said it was almost midnight and I even as I wondered who was
calling so late I knew it was Troy. I hesitated for a minute before
answering, "hello" and heard his voice almost whispering.

"Mike, its Troy. I didn't wake you did I?"

"No." I replied. "It is kind of late though."

"I know but Mom told me you called earlier while I was at Sherman's. Do you
still want us to clean the garage tomorrow?"

"Yes, just like I told you earlier. That must have been why your mother
called earlier while I was out. Her number was on the caller I.D. and when I
called she said you had mentioned working for me."

"Yeah but mom didn't call, I did. I just wanted to be sure you wanted me
that's all. That Robert guy was with you and I didn't know if maybe you had
changed your mind so I called."

"No, no change Troy. I still want you." I said before realizing the hidden
meaning in the words almost an answer to his asking if I still wanted him
and that would explain the sudden swelling I felt in my groin.

"Mike. . . . "

"Yes Troy. . . ."

"I like you, good night." He said and the phone line went dead.

The swelling in my groin had developed into a throbbing steel rod and ached
as I hung the phone up and started taking my clothes off before showering.
Maybe Troy was showering at the same time. . . . .!!!
