Turnhurst Manor Chapter Two

Once we got out of the woods we found and old dirt road. We followed that
down to a wide river dad told me the name but I forgot what it was. When we
stopped we would eat. I became friends with Ben quickly he was only
fourteen; he was bigger than I was he stood almost six feet tall but was
thin like me. I found out that he had been traveling east for the last
eight months trying to get to his uncles place. He had lost his father and
his mother two months back, the group of people he had been traveling with
before he got lost and found the cave knew his uncle and they were also
going to meet with him hoping they would be able to find any of their
family. He said he did not see much fighting until they got close to the
big cities.

Several times dad would tell us to stay put then he would go and check what
was up ahead. Every so often we would hear gunfire and bombs going off,
sometimes they would be close other time you would just be able to hear it
over the bird chirping.

Many times we would sleep under the stars. Ben and I would curl up together
while dad kept watch. We each took our turn during the night. Ben woke me
up one night and told me I was talking in my sleep he told me I kept
calling out Tylers name. When he asked me why I told him I really liked
Tyler even though I had only known Tyler for two days he was like my best
friend. Ben did not get to know Tyler like I did so he did not
understand. Ben and I were now very close and I trusted him.

It always seemed like we were lost but dad always seem to know where we
were going. I decide when we first left that I was going to leave a mark on
a tree or arrange rocks on the ground so I would be able to find my way
back to the manor if something were to happen. Like getting separated from
dad that way I would be able to get back to the manor. Ben told me it was a
great idea so when dad was not looking we would carve a sign in a tree or
stack rocks up pointing the way.

When we would come up on a town we would go around it so we would not be
seen. We had been on the road for two week when we ran into trouble. A
group of men had come up behind us and had taken all of our packs that
contained our clothes. I don't think they knew what were in the other packs
that Tyler had given us because they took the packs and left the food on
the ground unopened. This was lucky for us because everything we had to
barter with was in our packs that contained our clothes.

Ben and I had got away while dad fought them off, they beat dad up pretty
good. We found a house that had been abandoned so we stayed there a few
days while dad recovered from the wound that the men had inflicted. Ben and
I dug through the house and found some old clothes that looked like they
would fit. I found a pair of scissors some needles and thread and made the
three of us some new pack so we could carry our new clothes and food. Ben
found a gun but it did not have any bullets for it and when he showed dad
the gun dad told him to throw it away. When Ben asked him why dad told him
the only reason he was alive was because he did not have a weapon. Ben
seems to agree and put the gun back where he found it. I found a board that
was loose when I was upstairs and when I looked under it I found a big
towel.

Inside I found watches, necklaces, rings and money. I took them down to dad
he said to keep everything but the money because it was no good. In the
basement we found what looked to be a hidden shelter which was left open by
the people who had lived there and inside we found more foil packs like the
one Tyler had given us. We took as many as we could carry; I looked around
to see if I could find how the door to the shelter opened before I close
it. I want to protect what we left inside just in case we came back this
way. Ben said that it was a good idea.

Outside there was a stream so Ben and I decided to clean up and wash our
clothes along with the clothes we found. Ben took off all his clothes,
since Ben took all his clothes off I would too.

I noticed Ben had a big scar on his back and into one of his left butt
checks. When I asked what happen he just turns, and then said he had an
accident year back. He said he does not remember much about it. This is the
first time I have seen Ben completely naked and I was getting excited. My
youth began to grow and was soon standing straight up against my body. When
Ben turn he laughed, soon his youth was standing against his body. He
stared at me for a few minute it looked like he was thinking of something
then he turned back to me then went back to washing clothes. I tried to
will my youth down but it would not. It was very difficult bending down to
wash clothes when you are hard as a rock. It looked like Ben was having the
same problem. Ben grabbed a pair of pants and began to beat it against a
rock which sent water everywhere. Some splashed in my face so I cupped my
hands and splashed water on Ben's back. Next thing I knew water was flying
everywhere, we were laughing and having a good time. Then Ben grabbed me, I
could feel his hard youth pressing against me we fell into the water and
thrashed around first Ben was on top then I would be on top. We were having
a great time, we were laughing when we heard gunfire. We stopped got up and
grabbed our wet clothes and slowly made our way back to the house.

Before we left the house dad told us to look at the main floor widow if the
shade was up we were too slowly move to the house and look inside just in
case someone got in the house. If the shade was down we were to wait till
nightfall then go to the spot we had prearranged and stop wait for my
father and if he did not show by morning we were to keep heading to my
grandfathers. The shade was up so we made our way slowly to the house. We
put some of our wet clothes on then moved around the house looking in the
windows to see if we could see my dad anywhere.

Ben looked in one of the windows and saw two men with guns they were going
through one of the packs I sewed the day before. Ben ducked then whispered
to me that there were people in the house. We moved away from the house and
went to the spot that dad said to meet him if something were to happen. I
was shaking like a leaf on a tree. I was worried something had happen to my
dad. Ben put his arm around me and said everything would be ok and that dad
would be along soon.

We heard more gunfire it sounded like a battle. We heard yelling then more
gunfire. Then there was silent's not even the birds were making any
noise. We waited for couple hours there and there still was no sign from
dad. I began to get worry it was getting dark out and cold. When I was
looking in the house I found some jacket and now I was wishing I had one
with me. Ben moved closer to me then put his arm on my shoulder. I looked
at him he smiled and said.

"You looked like you are cold so I thought if we sit together like this we
could share some body heat."

He was right I began to warm up some. Right after the sun went down we
heard a noise coming through the trees. Ben and I hid in one of the bushes
that was close to the tree dad told us to meet at. The noise kept getting
louder then out of the dark we heard,

"Jeff, Ben are you there."

It said. To my joy it was my dad.

"What happen?"

Ben said as we came out from the bushes.

"Some men surprised me after you two left the house. I got out of the house
before they saw me. I hide under one of the out sheds."

Dad said then went on to say.

"I saw the two of you look in the house and was happy to see you leave when
you did not see me. I thought about trying to get your attention but
thought better of it in case someone heard me. Then after you left three
more men showed up. Then all hell broke loose. After the shooting stopped
and I did not see anyone or anything moving I decided to wait a little
longer before I went to look. There was one man still alive when I went
into the house but he won't make it through the night. I grab some of our
stuff that was scattered about and hide it by one of the shed so we will
have to go back to get them."

Ben told dad that after we checked the house we went straight here. Dad
gave both of us a hug then said we should go back and pick up the rest of
our stuff. So we made our way back to the house.

Inside the door two men laid dead on the floor another in the living room
and another in the kitchen. In the back bedroom the last man laid on the
floor he looked like he was having a hard time breathing. Dad stopped, he
stood there looking down at the man then realized that he was one of the
men who had attacked us two day before. Dad bent down and said something to
him in a whisper the man said something back then dad picked him up and
moved him out into the hallway next to the two men by the front door. Dad
began looking through there jacket pocket taking stuff out and putting
whatever it was he took out and put it into his own. He then told Ben to go
out by the shed and grab our stuff and to meet him outside. Dad told me to
grab the food and the jewelry then to go out and stay with Ben. I grab
everything then went to look for a jacket that would fit, I also found one
that could fit Ben and one for my dad. Once outside I met up with Ben I
gave him one of the jackets I found then waited for dad to come out.

Dad came out of the house smiled and said to follow him. I handed him the
jacket I found, he said thanks put it on then started walking toward the
river where Ben and I had been earlier that day. Not more than three
hundred yard from where Ben and I had been washing our clothes and playing
dad found our old packs. We picked them up then crossed the river once
across we heard one single gunshot ring out. Ben and I turned around but
dad kept moving forward. From that point on we slept during the day and
moved across the countryside during the night.

Town after town, house after house we avoided them. Every so often we would
hear fighting. We avoided anybody and everybody. Dad said it would be safer
if we traveled by ourselves that way we only had to worry about
ourselves. Ben and I both agreed with him. We were starting to get low on
food and the days seem to melt into one other but my mind kept going back
to Tyler. I wonder how he was doing and if he was safe it had been two
months since we left the manor. In my heart I kept thinking about him.

Ben became a good friend we always slept together it helped us to keep
warm. The days were becoming colder and the night even colder. Dad said we
would have to find someplace to find food soon or we would be out. Dad said
we were not too far from my grandfather farm but we still had many miles
and we would need supplies once we got there.

One night we came upon a small town it seemed quite so dad decided he
would go to see if we could get any supplies from there. Ben and I found a
spot where we would not be seen while dad went into town. He left his stuff
with the two of use just in case they decide to rob him instead. After
about an hour dad came back with a man and asked me for the pack with the
jewelry inside and began showing the man what we had. The man looked at the
jewelry then shook my dad's hand then told us to follow him.

When we approached the town Ben and I notice there were several men behind
barriers. They looked at us as we move past them.

A very large man walked up to dad and shook his hand. Dad turned and began
to introduce us. He told the man that these two young men were his sons
this is Ben my oldest and Jeff my youngest. Dad winked at Ben. Ben shook
the man's hand then the man shook my hand and introduced himself and Mayor
Tom Jenkins.
