Brief Recap of Chapter 13 of WESTBRIDGE SPIRIT

I tried to remain calm as I drove but my anger and fear was rising. How
dare whatever it was to attack my innocent children. My family should have
been safe in our home, not be afraid or in danger. Luckily, the rain
stopped just as I approached the state border but something didn't feel
quite right. Pulling over near Rockford, I filled the car with gas, picked
up some chocolate to munch and called to let Richard know were I was.
Getting back on the road, the car seemed sluggish and hard to manage.

The closer to the city I got, it became more difficult to control the
vehicle. I was sliding on dry pavement and swerving without touching the
wheel. Turning off the expressway towards my home, the brakes failed
causing a severe slide and spin. The last thing I remember was the sound
of the windshield breaking and the airbag exploding.

WESTBRIDGE SPIRIT: CHAPTER FOURTEEN (14)

I awoke in a haze and found myself floating in a brilliant white light. My
body didn't hurt even though I had a memory of the accident. In the
background, I could faintly hear people talking and machines beeping. The
light was so bright that I could not even see anything. I closed my eyes
against the brightness and let my body relax. That's when the dream tale
continued.

Geoffrey fell asleep, exhausted from crying over Quinn. His wife, Sarah,
came into the room and put a quilt over the drowsing form. She stroked his
hair and kissed his forehead before quietly heading out to her own room.
Several hours later, Geoffrey awoke and nervously looked around at the
strange surroundings. He got up and removed his traveling clothes before
returning to finish his sleep.

At daybreak, his new valet, Edwin Hoffman, entered the chamber to open the
draperies and help Geoffrey dress for breakfast. He politely roused his
new master and helped him prepare for the day. Once finished, he left to
attend to other matters. Geoffrey put away his small portrait of Quinn in
the bedside table before heading down to eat. Sarah was waiting for him
before starting to serve herself. They had a buffet style meal and chatted
about what needed to be done today.

When they finished their meal, they left to began taking care of the
necessary errands. Saran had to interview additional household staff since
they only had his valet and her personal maid, Abigail Wells. Geoffrey had
to see his solicitor to finalize the deed to the house and establish the
requisite lines of credit. He wished his wife well before entering a
hansom cab to his appointment. Nervously, he twisted his wedding ring and
gnashed his teeth.

Arriving at his destination, he entered the imposing building and found the
appropriate office. Informing the young clerk at the desk of his name, he
was asked to wait one moment. Shortly thereafter, the clerk opened the
inner door and ushered Geoffrey inside. His solicitor, Arthur Latham, rose
and greeted him with a firm handshake. He was a tall man of about 50 with
salt-and-pepper hair and a neatly trimmed beard. Pulling out a thick, brown
satchel, he retrieved the paperwork for the house and explained the details
before asking if Geoffrey had any questions. Geoffrey had none so he was
instructed to sign in several places. With the deed now secured, the next
order of business was contact information for the various lines of credit.
These included various food shops, clothiers, physicians, and other
assorted businesses. Asking a few questions about banking matters and
preparing his will, Geoffrey concluded his meeting, setting up a future
appointment. Rising and shaking hands again, he left to attend to the
letters of credit. Completing those tasks quickly, he stopped at a local
pub for some libation before returning home

He returned home to give his wife the information about the results of his
meeting. They sat in the front parlor as he relayed the conversation and
gave her the contact information she would require to properly run the
home. Sarah replied that she only needed to find a proper gardener to
complete the staff. He kissed he gently on the cheek before heading
upstairs to change into a fresh suit where he found Edwin was waiting for
him and assisted him in donning his informal lounging suit. Geoffrey then
went to the library to write a couple of letters before it was time for
luncheon. This meal was served properly as they continued to review the
activities of the day. He did care for Sarah and hoped to be able to make
her happy. She knew and understood his love for Quinn as she had once had
a similar affair. Sarah was also leaving an unsafe past so this
relationship worked for both of them. They had made plans to attempt to
produce a family to perpetuate the image of a normal marriage.

As I watched them conversing, I heard my name called softly. Opening my
eyes slowly, I saw the handsome face of the man I loved, Richard, staring
down at me. It was clearly evident that he had spent serious time by my
bedside. Smiling up at him, he kissed me and squeezed my hand. He helped
me take a small sip of water before I asked him what happened. Richard
relayed the details of the accident but I could sense he was withholding
something. I asked what day it was and received a shocking reply.
Apparently, I had been unconscious for over two weeks. None of my injuries
were that serious but I couldn't be roused. Richard proudly stated that he
hadn't left my side for more than bathroom breaks. I smiled and gripped
his hand. Asking about the boys, he said they were doing well but were
staying with Uncle Walter until our apartment could be made safe. He
promised to have them visit after school. I could see the concern in his
face as tears flowed down his cheeks.

"I though I was losing you." Richard began. "The doctors didn't know why
you were unresponsive since there was no evidence of a head injury."

Speaking slowly, I said, "I was trapped in another dream. This one was
longer than the others."

I related the minutia of the dream and was becoming quite tired. Richard
could sense my growing fatigue and encouraged me to rest. To help me
relax, he began singing our song, "Forever Love," in a soft baritone. No
one could ever say he had a good voice but it was a sweet gesture anyway.
Quickly falling asleep, I thought I might dream but my mind must have been
over tired.

As I rested, Richard took a quick shower and changed his wrinkled clothes
before calling Frank to have him bring the kids for a visit. He then
phoned in a food delivery before returning to the seat by my bed. When his
meal arrived, he paid and sat to eat watching me sleep the entire time.
Turning on his laptop, he finished some paperwork and played a few online
card games to occupy his time.

I woke up and once again needed some water before speaking. Being hungry,
Richard called the nurse to request my liquid meal. Helping me to sit up,
he tenderly fed me soup, juice and raspberry sherbet. It was so incredibly
romantic to be taken care of by the one I love. Richard was the center of
my universe and made my life better. He was gentle and made certain that I
didn't attempt to eat too much since it had been a long time.

About an hour later, Frank knocked on the door to let us know they had
arrived. Even though the room was large, Richard only allowed one of them
to visit at a time while he watched over me. Patrick was the first to come
and sit by my side. He kissed my hand and almost started to cry. I smiled
and began chatting about how his schoolwork was going. Patrick said his
grades were good, as usual, before commenting on how much safer he felt
with Frank. Knowing how in love they were was a great comfort to me. I
knew that he would be cared for if anything happened to me.

Next to be brought in was Campbell, clutching Collin`s hand. As his escort
left the room, he looked scared with all the machines around me until I
softly called his name and told him to sit on the edge of my bed. Gently,
he hugged me and started to rattle off every little detail of the past few
days. I smiled and tried to grasp what he was saying. His pure excitement
at seeing me was refreshing since he didn't seem as upset or phased by my
situation. Kissing him on the cheek, I asked to see his brother Kyle.

Collin ushered the older boy inside before discretely taking a protective
position in the far corner. Kyle spoke softly and seemed fascinated with
all the machines and tubes. I answered what I could and talked about his
classes. He was enjoying school and made a couple of friends. Asking when
I would come home, I had to be honest and tell him I didn't know. Kyle
looked as if he was going to cry so I gave him a tender hug before asking
to speak with Collin alone. Richard led him out to his brother, leaving
the two of us alone.

Collin appeared nervous as I asked him to take a seat. As he stared at his
hands, I asked, quite bluntly, if he intended to remain working for us.
Knowing about the attacks he had witnessed, I was concerned that the two
young brothers would be left without someone they trusted, Collin
immediately shook his head and proudly indicated that he didn't dare leave
the boys unchaperoned. He told me how much he cared about them and their
safety. Collin did indicate that Kyle was having the hardest time coping
with the recent events more than the others but he didn't seem to know why.
It made me extremely proud and even suspect that he may have had a small
crush on Kyle. I could tell he was being especially protective over him
and mentioning his name much more often. Thanking him for his loyalty, I
inquired as to how he was handling these events. He explained that it was
upsetting but he planned to help all of us to deal with whatever was
occurring. Collin clearly displayed his concern for Kyle.

I asked to speak with Frank next. Entering the room, Frank walked over and
grabbed my hand before taking a chair. He explained that Patrick was
experiencing nightmares from his attack and the fear for his brothers. I
asked if he was seeing anyone and was assured that a therapist was
counseling the entire family. He said that there had been calls from both
Ace and Conrad but they were appraised of the current situation. Once I
was back home, we would be able to meet with them to go over their
findings.

Frank then became more nervous than I ever recall him being. Pulling a
small box out of his jacket pocket, he showed me a gold ring with a small
blue topaz stone. With his voice cracking, he asked for permission to
propose to Patrick once I was back home. Frank explained that recent
events made him decide not to waste time over important decisions.

With tears in my eyes, I hugged him and told him emphatically that he had
my permission. Richard had already expressed his support but felt mine was
more critical for this engagement. I thanked him for being so supportive
and concerned about my feelings and hoped we could do that soon. He then
suggested taking the boys back home since they all had some work to finish.
I wished him well and waited as Richard came back, smiling broadly having
known what was being discussed.

"Are you surprised?" he asked. "I was thrilled but wanted you to have your
input as well."

I smiled and replied, "They make a good couple and I feel better knowing
their future seems bright."

The next few days dragged on like molasses in January. There were more
tests to confirm my injuries were healing properly. No indication or cause
for my prolonged coma could be determined. After establishing a physical
therapy schedule and arranging for a visiting home nurse, I was discharged
into the waiting arms of my family.

Uncles Walter and Oliver made the event into quite a spectacle. I entered
their home to find almost everyone I cared about, including Maybrook. Mom
was in tears as she gingerly took me in her arms to thank God for saving
me. The evening was joyous but Richard made certain in was also not
overtaxing for me. After a small meal and some reminiscing, he determined
that I was becoming tired so called for an end to the festivities.

Everyone seemed to understand and they politely bid their farewells. With
Frank helping Richard to get me into bed, the children came in to kiss me
before heading off to their beds. He was going to sleep on the small sofa
in the room when I asked him to hold me. It had been almost a month since
I last felt those strong arms safely encircling me. He undressed and
crawled carefully behind me. Tenderly, he took me in his arms and we
drifted into my first real good night of sleep in a long time.

MAYBROOK

The phone call couldn't have come at a worse time for me. My nerves were
already frazzled due to so many freak occurrences around the manor. Plates
had been shattered in the china hutch, carpeting had been ripped from the
stairs, and several beds were found stripped of the linens. The temporary
staff refused to work in certain rooms alone due to uneasy sensations and
odd noises. I had no way of explaining these things so I assigned them in
pairs.

Just before Phillip's accident, I had been suffering for several days with
an extremely painful migraine headache. My doctor ran a complete series of
tests but could find no direct cause. The medication he had prescribed did
not seem to be providing any relief at all. That evening when the call
came, I had gotten ill after eating and knew deep down that something was
about to happen. Without even being asked, I arranged for a security
detail to watch the manor and immediately obtained a flight to Chicago. I
was a nervous wreck throughout the flight and was never more happy to get
off a plane. Frank met me at baggage claim and filled me in on Phillip's
current condition. Driving directly to the hospital, I found my entire
family gathered together in the small chapel praying for his recovery They
were pleased to see me and Richard took me to visit with Phillip. He was
so frail and vulnerable lying in that hospital bed with wires and tubes
everywhere. I talked to him and assured him that I would stay until he was
back with the rest of his family.
