Brief Recap of Chapter 6 of WESTBRIDGE SPIRIT

Dear Mr. Khant,

I am writing to inform you of an urgent matter concerning Westbridge Manor.
Maybrook has noticed an increasing problem with the household staff. Most
of them have recently fled in terror, refusing to explain their reasons for
leaving. He has remained out of loyalty to your late Aunt Marie. I am
concerned because of rumor that have come to my attention from local
villagers about strange events on or near the grounds of the house.

Also, Maybrook recently discovered some locked trunks in an unused bedroom
that might be of interest to you. These trunks may contain additional
money or items which need to be inventoried. Please contact me and make
arrangements to visit ASAP.

I do apologize for the inconvenience and aggravation. Looking forward to
hearing from you soon.

Yours cordially,

Alfred Grant

What was the problem with the servants? Which rumors was he talking about?
Locked trunks? Strange occurrences? I wondered what more could be
happening that I would need to encounter. All of this was on top of the
information that I hoped Professor Iverson might find. He seemed far too
interested in what should have been a relatively minor American family.

WESTBRIDGE SPIRIT: CHAPTER SEVEN (7)

I called Mr. Grant about his email and his secretary put me straight
through. He was glad to hear from me and he seemed genuinely and deeply
concerned. Maybrook was, according to his description, on edge and
frightened of the house and the loss of the other staff. I asked when all
of these problems began and he informed me that it was shortly after we
left with Patrick for Chicago.

Then Alfred said something that actually made my blood run cold. He
mentioned that the problems started in the room where Richard and I had
stayed on both visits. Over time, they spread to other rooms and even the
greenhouse. When I asked what sort of disturbances, he simply explained
that everyone he spoke with described what could only be called other
worldly or paranormal incidents.

As far as the trunks, he had no idea where they came from since he assured
me the entire house was inventoried shortly before Marie's death for the
will. Those items were not found or listed on any manifest of the property
until Maybrook was alone in the house. He had discovered them after one
particularly disturbing incident in a room that was being prepared for
restoration. Also, Alfred indicated that these trunks looked to be of an
age close to the date of construction for the manor.

I informed him that I had to check my schedule at the restaurant but if
anything was heavily time-sensitive I could change plans. He assured me
that nothing required immediate responses but the sooner I could come the
better, if only for Maybrook`s sake. We chatted about how Patrick was
getting along and then I ended the call.

No sooner had I put down the phone, than it rang with a call from Maybrook.
He sounded as though he had run a marathon. His breathing was ragged and
he had definite panic in his voice. After getting him to calm down, I
pleaded with him to tell me what happened. He stumbled, unusual for him,
and then went on to say that he had found another locked box. This one was
a large, hand-carved mahogany jewelry box. I asked where it had been and
he said your room.

I didn't remember seeing one and he said there wasn't, as far as he could
recall. The more disturbing fact was the engraved plaque that read; "To
Phillip From His Love Richard" with a date of May 1917. That was
approximately one month after the United States formally entered the
fighting in World War I. It didn't make any sense as I was having
difficulty remembering anyone with those names in the books from the
library.

I thanked him for his call and told him I would be there as soon as I could
arrange a flight. Patrick wasn't due to start school for another one month
so all I had to do was figure out my restaurant schedule. Phoning Richard,
I gave his the cliff notes version of the problem and he suggested I go and
he would join me in two weeks after final exams. Then I rang Uncle Walter
to see if he needed me desperately.

"Hi Uncle Walter. Are you free to talk?" I asked not wanting to bother
him.

"For my favorite nephew, sure. What's up?" he responded with a smile in
his voice.

I filled him in on the recent developments at Westbridge Manor and the
phone calls. Explaining my concern for Maybrook and the others, he cleared
my calendar and gave me the number of his best friend's travel agency.
Thanking him, I called and soon had two tickets to New York for the next
morning. I went to the kitchen to find Frank showing Patrick how to roll
pie crusts. It was such a domestic picture that it made me laugh loudly.

"So, he's teaching you to make pies?" I chuckled as they turned to see who
laughed.

"I asked him to show me." Patrick said, blushing deeply.

"It's okay, He's been helping me." Frank stated, kissing Patrick's flour
smeared cheek.

I told both of them about the troubles at Westbridge and asked Patrick if
he would like to go. At first, he looked unsure about leaving Frank but he
was reminded that it was approaching finals week and they wouldn't have
much together time anyway. Frank asked about arrangements and I assured
him they were already taken care of and we would leave the next morning. I
also suggested that if he wished, Frank could join us when Richard flew our
after finals were over.

That evening dinner conversation revolved around the troubles at the manor
and what each of us thought they were. I was just concerned for the staff
and curious about the various locked trunks and chests. When Richard and I
went to bed, I filled him in on the jewelry box with our names on it. He
shook as though a ghost had walked nearby. It gave us both chills. We
were too unnerved to make love so we spooned each other until the alarm
went off for my flight. I think the use of our names caused us both to
have some disturbing dreams as we tossed and turned until we were tied in
the sheets.

Since Richard didn't need to be up that early, I quietly showered and reset
his alarm. Dressing and putting my suitcase by the door, I snuck into the
kitchen to find Frank fixing cinnamon rolls and tea for Patrick and I.
Thanking him for getting up extra early, he blushed and hugged his young
love. I knew what that meant but didn't push the issue. Reminding him of
Richard's needing to be up later, I snuck back into our room and bent down
to kiss him. The faker grabbed me and tongued me until I pleaded that we
were going to be late. With a final kiss and a grope, I ran for the door
with Patrick to catch the limo to the airport.

The airport wasn't terribly busy at that early hour and we got to the gate
well before we were leaving. Patrick pulled out his I-pod and I worked on
my laptop until boarding was announced. I had managed to obtain First Class
tickets so our seats were a little more comfortable. As we taxied to the
runway and took off, my lack of sleep took over and I dozed.

Geoffrey appeared in my dreams again. He was on the Boston-bound train
crying as he gazed out at the rain-soaked countryside. The sun came out
just as he pulled into the station where a tall man and obviously pregnant
young lady were waiting with his name on a sign. Through his sorrow, he
smiled when he saw them and ran to greet them.

"Alexander! Johanna! Why didn't you tell me you were picking me up? And
when did this happen?'" he laughed, rubbing Johanna's enormous belly.

Alexander spoke, "We made an executive decision to meet you at the last
second."

Johanna giggled and added, "This happened about eight-and-a half months ago
and I wish it were over."

"Congratulations to you both." Geoffrey exclaimed. "Let me get my bags
and we can get moving."

The trio headed to Alexander and Johanna's house since Geoffrey's wasn't
quite finished being decorated yet. Quinn had been school hood friends
with Alexander Drefuss and best man at his marriage to Johanna Tompkins.
There was still a couple of weeks before he would be able to move-in to his
house alone. Chatting over dinner, they talked about Quinn, the
inheritance, his decision to move here, and the pregnancy.. This went on
until his body made it apparent he needed rest. Johanna was tired as well
so she led him to his room and then went on to her own. Alexander reminded
him that they needed to talk more about Geoffrey's future plans.

Geoffrey pulled a small portrait from his bag and placed in, tenderly, on
his nightstand. It was an image of he and Quinn in front on the greenhouse
construction site. Wiping away tears, he kissed the faces and crawled into
bed. Soon, his breathing became rushed and he was writhing on the bed as
if in pain. Small grunts and moans began escaping from him until he was
almost screaming Quinn's name over and over. At once, Johanna and
Alexander came rushing in just as he sat upright in bed and screamed "He
was murdered!" The two appeared shocked and managed to calm poor Geoffrey
down. Once awake, he couldn't recall anything about the dream and had to
change his bedclothes as he had sweat clear through them. Thanking his
friends for their concern, he tried reading for some time until he
eventually passed out from pure exhaustion.

At that point, I felt Patrick shaking me to tell me we were landing.
Alfred had sent a car for us and we headed straight for the manor.
Maybrook met us at the door, as usual, looking older and more frail than I
had ever seen him. His face looked as though he had not slept in weeks and
worry was present in his manner and his eyes. He informed us that Alfred
would stop by later with an expert locksmith since no keys had been found
for any of the trunks or chests.

He placed Patrick and I in the same rooms as before and told us we would
have lunch in 30 minutes. I felt a tenseness in my room that I couldn't
recall from previous visits. The air crackled with electricity and
Geoffrey's portrait seemed, somehow, more subdued and depressed. His eyes
held a sadness that wasn't apparent the last time I saw it. Before I even
realized it, tears were streaming down my face and I was shaking from the
crying.

Patrick knocked on my door and then rushed in when he heard me crying. I
was so distraught that I barely acknowledged he was even present. Taking
me in his arms and leading me to the bed, I wept for what felt like a
lifetime until Patrick finally calmed me down. I could see the concern on
his face but I had no explanation for what came over me. Cleaning my face
in the bathroom, we headed down to lunch.

Once in the dining room, Maybrook served us lunch without additional help.
I inquired who had prepared it and he said the cook came in but refused to
remain past sundown. Just as we finished and headed to the library, Alfred
arrived with the locksmith. Maybrook had gathered all the trunks and
chests where we waited so it made it simply to get all the locks open in
one visit. Following brief introductions, Steven Miller, the locksmith,
began working on the various locks, while explaining the relative ages of
the various locks. He felt that they could be easily opened and spare keys
provided as he went to work.

As he worked, Alfred filled us in about the staff complaints and local
myths. People in town believed that Quinn had, in fact, been murdered by
his mother. Reports of strange occurrences date back to the time of his
death. They ranged from phantoms, strange noises, to unearthly weather
phenomena and physical attacks. He even suggested the name of an
organization that conducted paranormal investigations. This group had
always been keen to take a peek around the estate so I decided to
investigate them and maybe let them have a crack at it.

An hour later, the locks were all opened and Alfred paid him. Needing to
meet another client, they left allowing Patrick and I to go through the
various trunks. He decided not bother making an inventory of anything we
might find as it was really too much trouble. I was especially curious to
look through the mahogany jewelry box. Seeing the names and date on the
plaque was more unsettling than I thought it would be. Patrick even seemed
disturbed by the small brass square.

Patrick helped me lift it onto the desk. It seemed to weight a ton as it
was very well constructed. With my hands shaking, I lifted the lid first
to find an assortment of men's rings, cuff links, and tie tacks. They were
all either gold or silver, many with gemstones of various types. I then
moved to the top of the two drawers to find stick pins and a few necklaces
with various pendants. The remaining drawer help three pocket watches and
matching chains.

When I picked up the most ornate of the watches a sliding drawer came out
the right hand side of the box. Inside that drawer were two yellowed
envelopes. The first one had Geoffrey's name written in extremely precise
writing. Opening it slowly, there was a letter written by Quinn which
read:

My Dearest Geoffrey,

If you are reading this letter, then my mother has finally figured a way to
rid herself of me. I am not sure how it will happen but I'm certain it
will appear to be accidental. Please know that there was really no way to
prevent it. In ant event, my biggest worry will be for your safety.

I have instructed my solicitor to make certain that you receive your
portion of my estate and are quickly removed from my mother's sphere of
negative influence. For my piece of mind, I beg you to get to our friends,
Alexander and Johanna Drefuss, in Boston. They will help you become
invisible to my mother and her minions.

Always remember that you are my one true love and own my heart completely.
Please try and find another love and stay safe from my insane mother.

Your eternal angel,

Quinn

As soon as I finished, Patrick was holding me because I was crying almost
uncontrollably. He had tears running down his cheeks as well. It was such
a poignant and romantic letter. I decided to get a copy of the letter to
Professor Iverson. Once we calmed down, Patrick carefully picked up the
second envelope. This one had the name Nathaniel on it in a scrawled
handwriting resembling that of an elderly person. Removing the folded
paper inside, he began to read it aloud.

Sweet Nathaniel,

I have never been happier in my life than I have with you. You may be
surprised to find how I have made certain that your future is secure. In
the meantime, I have an enormous favor to ask of you. You will receive a
key and password for a safety lock box at my bank. Inside there is a
folder of information about the death of my distant relative Quinn Oswald
Jr. He was murdered and I believe I have found the proof.

I know nothing can be done to correct it or even punish those responsible,
but I would like to have the story known. Also, Quinn had a young lover of
his own who disappeared in Boston shortly after his death. The information
I found recently indicates that you might be related to this
individual. Please look into it as you may be entitled to an unclaimed
fortune left by him or his descendants.

I love you and hope you will be happy and try to find a new love.

My eternal love,

Carter

Here was another letter that Professor Iverson might need and another bout
of tears. Also I made a mental note to contact Alfred about whether any of
that information might still exist. We decided to put off the other trunks
until the next morning. Putting the letters back in the hidden drawer we
called Maybrook to have him bring in some tea. I decided to call Richard
while we enjoyed our snack. He answered on the second ring.

"Hey sexy. What's up?" he cooed over the phone.

"I miss you and we found some interesting things." I said. "How goes
finals week?"

We chatted for a few minutes when Maybrook informed us that dinner was
ready. It was fabulous and we even convinced him to join us rather than
eating in the kitchen. He seemed relaxed and chatted about the problems he
had encountered since we first came to the manor. Everything that had gone
wrong started after that first visit. Once dinner was over, Patrick went
to his room to call Frank and I helped Maybrook with the dishes. Then I
grabbed another family history book and headed to my room.

My phone rang as I climbed into bed and it was Richard.

"Are you naked?" he growled at me.

"I certainly am, you pervert." I laughed. "Is someone horny?"

"You know I have trouble sleeping without you. I want to fuck you silly."

Reaching down to stroke my cock, I asked him, "Tell me what you want to do
to me."

"I want to push you on the bed and ram my cock up inside until you scream
so loud you wake the neighbors." he answered, as I could hear him stroking
himself.

The filthy talk continued with each of us getting hotter and hotter the
longer we went on. We were both panting and grunting as we headed to the
same destination. After a few minutes, I could hear Richard exploding on
his end and it sent me over into my own climax. As we both regained our
composure, we laughed and wished each other sweet dreams. Hanging up, I
cleaned myself and turned off the lights and went to sleep. For some odd
reason, there was no dream or abnormal event. Little did I know that I
wasn't alone in the room. Standing in the corner was a shadowy figure just
watching me sleep and smiling with love in his eyes.
