The Dahran Way

Chapter 8 The importance of tradition

  Vedel Vesh / Beno Vesh

The arrival of the newly weds to the Aloe Palace took place towards the
beginning of March after a long honeymoon in Barbados. Pete Downings, the
head of household, was almost a nervous wreck in trying to get everything
`in shape' for the arrival of the Mistress.

Jack, his de facto Master, was not even figuring in the preparations. In
all the month during their honeymoon I had not heard Pete once refer to
Jack as the Master and there was an unbelievable focus on what the
Mistress would or would not need.

In the main, I stayed well clear of it, though Pete was up every second
day at my breakfast table with a request for something or other new,
which he had forgotten.

Finally, I had to say to him, `Pete, you have my full authority, to
buy, get, steal, borrow, dispose of, throw out, anything you want. But
this worrying of yours about the new Mistress simply has to stop. What is
it you want this morning?'

`I want the slaves to wear boxer shorts when the Mistress arrives,
Master. She may not have been told that the slaves usually go around
naked. What if she gets upset? What if Master Jack gets upset with me for
not thinking of it?'

I was going to tell him that the slaves should be naked. But then in the
homes of other persons here in Dahra, I had seen that some were and some
were not. While I did not wish to presume on the wishes of the new
Master, or of the new Mistress, admittedly Pete had a point. The Mistress
had been told of the slaves. I could not remember that we had actually
told her of their mode of dress or rather lack of it.

`Okay, Pete, measure the slaves of the Aloe Palace up for blue boxers.
Give the list to Faisal and he will get them a pair of boxers ....'

Pete was shaking his head.

`What now?'

`Three pairs of boxers each, Master. The boxers will have to be
immaculately clean at all times. What if the slaves take a piss and there
is piss stains on the boxers?'

`Pete, measure them, number them in any quantity you want, get the list
to Faisal, get them on the slaves, show them how to piss without getting
the boxers stained, show them how to shake themselves dry before pulling
up their boxers! Now is there anything else, or can I continue my
breakfast. And by the way, would you like some cold toast? Bob! Bob!'

Bob was out of the kitchen immediately.

`Yes, Boss?'

`Get Pete here a cup of something and a plate. He is going to eat my
cold toast. And get me a plate of warm toast!'

`Yes, Boss,' Bob replied, shooting daggers at Pete across the
breakfast table.

All the medical staff, the overseers and the assistant overseers were
present at the Aloe Palace when Jack and Fiona arrived from the airport.
Everyone there had clothes on, including the slaves normally assigned to
the Aloe Palace for work in the fields there. They had all asked to be
present when the young Master arrived with the new Mistress.

When the two alighted from the Bank's limousine, there was a
spontaneous round of applause.

It was late afternoon by the time they arrived at the Aloe Palace. The
New Concorde flight into Bahrain, the connecting Lear flight down to
Dahra and the drive to the Aloe Palace had been all on time. So in one
sense, the new Mistress was getting a good impression of the country.

I noticed that it was all eyes on Fiona whom Jack was introducing to
each of the medical staff and the overseers starting with Pete Downings,
whom I thought was about to collapse on the spot he looked so nervous.

While the medical staff had shaken hands with the new Mistress, all the
overseers starting with Pete took her hand and kissed it. All the
assistant overseers following did likewise, clearly having been prompted
by Pete previously as to what to do.

If Jack was nervous he did not show it, but busily kept introducing
people.

Then it was the turn of the slaves and for the first time he appeared to
notice the boxer shorts and smiled at me. I smiled back and gave him a
twist of the head over towards Pete in acknowledgement.

`Fiona, I would like you to meet my first two slaves. This is Vedel.'

There was a moment of silence and Vedel came forward and taking his new
Mistress's hand in both of his brought his lips down and kissed it.

`Vedel, thank you. Jack has told me all about you' and she bent
forward and gave Vedel a peck on the cheek with her lips.

In shock, he touched his cheek where she had kissed him, dazed at the
words `thank you', which are normally never said to a slave.

`Fiona and this is Beno, who is also my slave.'

The new Mistress repeated her word to Beno and shocked him as well with
a small peck on the cheek.

That day, there had been some fourteen slaves working at the Aloe
Palace, including Abdul ben-Azri, the mentally handicapped son of my
former business partner, whom he had sold to me.

Each took the new Mistress's hand and kissed it as they had seen Vedel
and Beno do.

When Abdul approached to kiss her hand, he was too tall for her, so
Fiona, with her fingers, beckoned him to bend down, which he did
awkwardly from the hips and then she kissed him on the cheek. Abdul
smiled hugely at the new Mistress and then at me and the love that
radiated in his face was a joy to see as he promptly fell in love with
her.

By the time that all were greeted, we must have been over ten minutes in
the Aloe Palace courtyard, but it was, as if time had stood still for
those then minutes and I for one was very touched when Jack and Fiona
started to go into the Palace that the slaves again burst into a
spontaneous round of applause.

Jack looked on top of the world. When he got to the door of the Palace,
he caught Fiona up in his arms and deposited her on the other side of the
doorstep. She turned and kissed him full on the lips and all, who were
watching staff, overseers and slaves gave a resounding cheer, at, which
Jack blushed furiously.

I followed the two young lovers in.

`Uncle Jonathan, I can't thank you enough for everything.'

`Nonsense, Jack.'

`That goes, Jonathan, for both of us,' Fiona said, `and even for the
nice little touches.'

`Touches?'

`The boxer shorts. Jack had told me the slave normally go naked and I
was steeling myself not to laugh or something.'

`The boxer shorts were Pete Downings' idea. Your reception was also
mostly arranged by Pete Downings. He is a nervous wreck preparing for
your arrival. Say thanks to him, Jack, at some stage.'

`Jonathan, the two of us will. Don't worry. I still cannot believe
your generosity to us.'

`Fiona, Jack is a very special lad to me. And now that he has chosen so
very well, you too are special to me. And talking of special, you are
invited to a dinner this evening at eight. We normally eat at seven, but
the slaves will be having a special dinner of their own from half six
onwards and it takes a bit of time to feed even two courses to six
hundred, so tonight's dinner will be at eight. The only thing, Fiona,
all my slaves at the Lime Palace are naked.'

`Jonathan, I have seen Jack with his boxers on and with his boxers off.
I tell you, it's no big deal.'

I roared with laughter as Jack blushed beetroot red and Fiona took his
head in her hands and kissed him full on the lips as only young lovers
can do and get away with.

`Eight o'clock then, please, at the Lime Palace. There's no dressing
up and the dinner will be the medical staff and the overseers only, about
thirty of us in all.'

It was too much to expect the new Mistress to follow every one of my
wishes, for they were no more than that. With Jack on her arm, she walked
up the straight road from the Aloe Palace timing it so that they arrived
at half six just as the slaves were beginning to come into the courtyard
for their celebratory special evening meal.

The most unearthly silence descended on the courtyard where the tables
with the soup tureens had been set up. I was upstairs in my bedroom suite
thinking of taking a shower with Komil, when he alerted me to the arrival
of the newlyweds, who were being followed by Vedel and Beno carrying two
large, but obviously not too heavy, plain cardboard boxes, which they
proceeded to take into the kitchens.

As Fiona met each slave there was no indication from her that she was
meeting a naked man, some of whom even from my bedroom window I could see
were having an erection.

When each kissed her hand, she was saying something to the slave and was
giving each her customary peck on the cheek. Within minutes, there was a
queue all round the courtyard of those waiting to greet her. Jack wisely
called over the overseers to introduce them by name, as he did not know
more than a handful.

Soon he, too, was receiving a kiss on the back of his hand, which he
thankfully returned as a handshake to each, as if saying `thank you'
for the good wishes on the occasion of his wedding.

It was almost half-seven before all had greeted Fiona and Jack and then
she again surprised all by going up and taking two bowls of soup and two
spoons one for herself and one for Jack and went and sat on the lower
steps of the veranda near a group of slaves with whom she spoke in
English as she ate the soup.

When I came down after my shower, the ice-cream, which had been the
dessert had been handed out and Vedel and Beno came out of the kitchens
followed by Scott and Bryce, bearing stacked trays of individual
chocolates each in a golden wrapping, one for each slave.

The importance of the Palace's special dinner was well defined that
evening as a tradition for future years.

When I walked over to join Jack and Fiona and introduced Komil, Jack had
just spotted Sunar Hussein in the crowd of slaves and had called him
over.

`He has been a great Arabic teacher for me, Fiona. If you'd like to
start learning the language, I can recommend him.'

`I would like to very much', she said with a laugh that tinkled into
the very corners of the courtyard such was the attention still being
given to her and Jack. `But, Sunar, unfortunately we would have to start
at zero. Arabic is not taught to any great degree in Scotland.'

`That is no hindrance at all, Mistress', Sunar replied. `As the
number `zero' is one of the Arabic contributions to the world of
mathematics, it should be auspicious.'

`Sunar,' I said, `you are a remarkable teacher. And you sure know how
to motivate your students. You can arrange your classes for whenever is
most suitable, Fiona.'

`Then it would probably be best to start right away,' the new Mistress
replied.

The outcome was that she and Sunar settled on having the first lesson
the next day.

While the dinner with the medical staff and overseers was very pleasant,
my memory of that evening is always of Fiona present in the courtyard,
Jack by her side, proud as punch of his new wife and at her presence of
mind and poise.

The memories of the first day might well have ended there with the
evening meal for the slaves and that of the staff, but the memory of the
newlyweds followed over into the following day and we -- that is to say
Jack and I - were not aware of it until we arrived back from the Bank the
following evening.

I dropped Jack off at the Aloe Palace as we came back from the Bank,
rather I was just about to drop him off, when I thought I had better just
say hello to Fiona, this being her first day on her own in the Aloe
Palace and all of that.

I immediately noticed the silence around the Palace and definitely the
non-appearance of Beno and Vedel, who invariably rushed out to dance
attendance on Jack.

It was when I saw Yuriy, the stable overseer, walking over to greet us
looking rather grim that I thought something might be amiss. Jack had not
yet cottoned on to anything other than Fiona had not yet appeared.

Yuriy went on to explain to us that as soon as Jack had departed in the
morning and the Mistress had come down for breakfast, that Vedel and Beno
had gone up to the `marriage bed' as he said `to see that there was
blood on the sheets' where their Master had taken his wife virginity on
the wedding night.

Jack was turning all the shades of red as he listened to this tale from
Yuriy's lips.

The fact that a month had passed since the actual wedding night seemed
to have gone over Vedel and Beno's heads. The newlyweds had arrived home
and their first night in the mind of the two slaves was their wedding
night.

Not finding any blood on the sheets, one of Jack's two slaves had come
down to the kitchen to look for the blood of fresh meat to save the
honour of the Master and of the new Mistress.

Not finding any fresh meat, let alone blood in the kitchen, Vedel found
a bottle of tomato ketchup and ran upstairs with it, put it on a sheet
and in true Romanian gypsy and Roma fashion hung it out the window for
all to see that the prowess of the Master had taken the virginity of his
new wife on the very first night in their new home and also to prove to
the world that the new Mistress had been a virgin on her wedding night.

I was looking at Yuriy as he was telling me this. At first, I thought it
might be part of some elaborate joke and then I realised that Beno and
Vedel were gypsies and such traditions were just as important to them as
Easter to some, or Hogmany to others, particularly where the honour of
parties was concerned.

When Yuriy had finished, Jack looked, as if he had been pole-axed and he
looked up at their bedroom windows.

`No, Master, the sheet is now gone. Pete heard the slaves applauding
and came out, saw what had happened and ran back in and took in the
sheet, but not before the new Mistress had also come out to see what the
commotion was.'

`What did the Mistress say,' I asked cautiously.

`Nothing, Master. She just went in and finished her breakfast.'

`And where is she now?'

`In the study, or the library, I would presume, Master. I have not been
in the house in the past while.

Jack's face was running the gamut of colours from puce to red, to
white, to pale. He was clenching and unclenching his fists.

`Where are Beno and Vedel?' he asked.

`I think, Master Jack, they went into hiding when they heard the car
arrive.'

I could not help but smile to myself at that admirable bit of lack of
courage and display of slave initiative and common sense in the
situation.

`Yuriy, find these two,' said Jack. `I am going in to see if Fiona is
alright.'

`I'll have a word with Pete Downings,' I told him. Jack gave me a
grateful look and was off to find his wife.

I found Pete in the kitchens.

`You heard, Boss, what happened. I am dead in the water with the new
Mistress.'

`Did she say that to you?'

`No, Master. I could only apologise to her this morning and I had her
midday meal served to her in her room. Sunar Hussein arrived mid-morning
for the first Arabic lesson and I brought him in. When he had made
obeisance, the Mistress looked at him and said she had quite forgotten
about their appointment. She said she had something important to think
about and told him to come again tomorrow. Master, she even said to Sunar
she was sorry for having him walk over here for nothing, but I could see
her thoughts were elsewhere. Then she spent the afternoon walking all
round the ground of the Palace. She followed the edge of the grounds all
round by the trees, until she got back to the courtyard.'

As I was talking to Pete, we were interrupted by the sound of almost
hysterical laughter from inside the study.

When we went in, Fiona and Jack were sitting on the floor with their
back to one of the leather chairs, in peals of laughter. Fiona was waving
her hands in the air, in imitation of a sheet and the tears were rolling
down her cheeks. Jack was in convulsions at her descriptions and her
mimicking pantomime.

`No lasting damage, then, I gather?' I said

The two could only shake their heads unable to speak.

At that moment, Yuriy appeared at the study door with both Vedel and
Beno held by the scruff of the neck.

I pointed to their Master and said `apologise' and the two scurried on
their hands and knees to do so.

However, when Beno got near Fiona, she just grabbed him around the neck,
still laughing and planted a kiss on his forehead.

Vedel scurried away from Jack and made for Fiona, who kissed him also on
the forehead as she had done to Beno.

Wagging a finger in the air, she said `No more sheets. Yuriy please
tell them no more sheets' and she dissolved into laughter again.

Jack looked at the two slaves, rose from the floor to sit on the edge of
the other chair and with a jerk of his head and a cane-flicking-imitation
of his wrist a couple of times, he left them in no doubt what awaited
them in the near future. Yuriy placed his hands on their shoulders and
marshalled them out of the room while the going was good.

When the three of us were alone, Fiona said she had something to say and
this she thought was the right time for it.

`Jack, I have some good news for you, which I might as well give you
now, because I have been looking forward to tell you all day.'

Jack looked at her not understanding.

`We are expecting.'

At that, Jack lost his balance on the edge of the chair where he had
been precariously perched and ended up on the floor again.

`Fiona, it can't be. You can't be. We can't be. It's too soon.'

`Nothing, Jack, is too soon for nature. I thought it might be the case
two weeks ago during the honeymoon in Barbados, but then I wondered if it
wasn't just all the excitement of the wedding. Your two slaves reminded
me this morning that it was time to take a pregnancy test. We are
expecting. It must have been those days and nights of passion when we
stayed at the hotel in January.'

Jack reassembled himself from the floor and hugged his wife, his eyes
ablaze with happiness.

`Uncle Jonathan, I am going to be a father! A father! Can you imagine
that?' and he almost threw himself on top of me.

I said to Fiona that there were superb doctors at the University
Hospital in the capital city and if she wished to confirm the pregnancy,
she could ask Yves Fournier if he could recommend someone.

Fiona smiled and said, `That's tomorrow. Today, we celebrate! You two
get to do it Scottish style with a drop of single Malt from the house of
Campbell and since I can't have any at present I'll have a fruit juice,
which, from what I hear, seems to be official country toast in Dahra.'

I left the Aloe Palace for the more sedate and calm surroundings of my
home at the Lime Palace and thought to myself how in our own ways of
speech and dress, of seasons and anniversaries, of events and happenings,
how much importance we all place on tradition. Vedel and Beno had merely
made the Palace aware of one of theirs.

I took an early night with Food and Drink, who, when they saw me arrive
in an exhilarated and slightly alcohol-soused mood smelling of whisky,
took to waving bedclothes around in greeting. I concluded that the news
of the morning incident must have travelled to the Lime Palace. After
their sexual ministrations, approached in a spirit of close cooperation
as was their wont, I slept deeply and well.
