Accidental Family

Chapter 8

The guys slept in and when they did get up, They decided to stop at a fast
food joint, get a couple of sausage biscuits, some juice to go, and head
for home. After a couple of short stops, they arrived at the ranch near
midday.

Dan and Greg came out of the house and was at the car before Gene and Bill
had a chance to even get out. Gene and Bill could tell that something
serious was wrong.

"Gene, We have some very bad news for you. Your grandfather has been
hospitalized and is in very critical condition. After you called last
night, he had a very serious heart attack and is in the ICU unit at the
hospital. Grandma and the twins are there with him. We wanted to be here
when you two arrived. Dan and I are not immediate family, so we couldn't
get in to see him. The nurse did sneak us in for a couple of minutes. We
didn't want to call you and upset you so much that you wouldn't be able to
make it home all in one piece," said Gregg.

"I am glad that you didn't call. I know that I would have killed both of us
trying to get home. Dan and Gregg, would you take me to the hospital. I
know that I can't take myself."

"That is what we had planned on doing. Why don't the both of you climb in
the back seat of the car and we will be on our way," said Greg. "Bill, I
called the police department and moved you appointment tomorrow. We will
not have to leave and go there today."

Bill just slid over next to Gene and took him in his arms. "Gene, remember
you told me that you would be my crutch. Now I am going to be your
crutch. I am going to be at your side holding you up. So do like you told
me, `let it all out'." The two boys just sat there holding each other and
crying. Dan and Greg shed a few tears of their own.

"Hey Guys! We are pulling into the hospital parking lot. I want both of you
to hit the men's room and wash your faces. Gene, you are going to need to
be strong. Your grandmother and the twin will be looking to you for moral
support and strength. Don't let them down. This will probably be one of the
hardest things you'll ever have to do. You can do it!" said Dan.

Before Gene went into the room to see his grandfather, he said, "I am going
to go into the chapel for a few minutes and then I will go in."

Reverend Baker was in the waiting room and saw Gene go into the
chapel. "Dan and Greg, I'll wait a few minutes and then I will go in with
him. He needs a little time to himself. At least he knows that he doesn't
have to go all the way by himself. God will take care of him."

"Thanks, Reverend. I think we will all need you before all of this is
over," said Greg.

Gene came out of the chapel and he looked like all the weights had been
lifted from his shoulders. Gene went inside his grandfather's room. He went
immediately to his grandmother and took her in his arms. He just held her
and gently stroked her hair. The twins came to him and he took them in his
arms and held them. No words were needed.

"Gene, I have the paper work needed to take Grandpa off the life
supports. Grandpa also wanted to be an organ donor. This is something we
both have always wanted. I have already talked with the doctor and he is in
agreement. He will disconnect the machines when we are ready. Honey, I hate
to ask this of you but I know that I couldn't ask the doctor to remove
Grandpa from the life support. Would you do it for me?" Grandma handed him
the paper work and fainted. Gene caught her and put her in a wheel chair
and pushed her to the waiting room.

"Reverend Baker, would you please get the doctor and come into the room
with him. It is time!" said Gene who was crying uncontrollably. Bill was by
his side immediately and had him in his arms.

"Of course, I will be back in just a few minutes. Why don't you just wait
for us here in the waiting room."

"I think that we all want to go in and tell Grandpa good-bye. We'll all
come back out when you return. So give us 5 minutes. Thanks!" said Gene.

Everyone went into the room and said their good-byes. Grandma and Gene
remained, one on each side of the bed holding Grandpa's hand. "Grandpa, I
know you can hear me. Grandpa, you know how much we all love you. Grandma
and I just wanted to let you know that it ok for you to go now. Walk slowly
and we will catch up with you soon," said Gene "Goodbye, Grandpa. I love
you"

The doctor and Reverend Baker came in the room and Gene handed the doctor
the paperwork. "Grandma and I will wait in the waiting room. Reverend Baker
would you stay and be with Grandpa. I don't think either one of us can hold
up. We will be in the chapel."

"I would be happy to."

Grandma and Gene left the room. "Grandma, Grandpa told me good-bye. He
squeezed my hand."

"He squeezed mine, also." *****

Gene and Bill joined the haying crew. There was a lot of physical work and
muscle building to get them in shape for the football season which would be
there in about six weeks.

Bill almost never left the ranch. He still had a lot to leave behind him
before he would be comfortable going out into public places. Gene started
taking Bill for a `ride' each day. They would drive by all the old hangouts
and started seeing a lot of the kids that they knew. The kids always waved
at them and soon Bill started waving back. This all gave Bill a feeling of
security and maybe, just maybe he would be accepted.

They drove by the Pizzeria and could see that there were a lot of the kids
in there. This was one of favorite local hangouts for kids of all
ages. Gene pulled into the parking lot and shut of the engine. Bill started
shaking and was visibly upset.

"Gene, I don't want to go in there. I just don't know what will happen and
I know something bad will happen. Can we just go?" pleaded Bill.

"Bill, I will run in and get us a couple of cokes and we can drink it here
in the Car. Will you be okay in the car without me?"

"I don't know. I feel sick to my stomach and I feel like I am going to pass
out. Can we just go, please?

"Okay," Gene said. "We can go maybe come back some other time."

They were just sitting in the car, Gene was talking to Bill trying to ease
the pressure a little and get him to relax some. Bill started to feel a
little more at ease. A boy walked up and rapped on the window. "Hey, Bill
and Gene. It is really nice to see you."

Bill rolled down his window. "LeRoy, This is a pleasant surprise. Hop in
and let's catch up on all the happenings."

LeRoy got into the back seat. "Bill, I thought that you had left the
country. Haven't seen you for a long time. I drove by you place the other
day and I saw a sold sign on it. I just knew you were gone."

"I have been at the correctional institution serving my time. I received an
early out. I have been staying at Gene's place. Dad signed all of his
personal estate over to me and I put the house on the market. I just
couldn't bear the thought of moving back into it."

"Hey Guys, I hate to be Mister Killjoy but we really must be going. Bill
and I are both working in the hayfields and round two will start in a half
hour. Let's try to hook up soon. I will give you a call and let you know
when," said Gene.

"Sounds like a plan. Later!" LeRoy said and got out of the car.

Gene drove out of the parking lot. "You see, Bill, that wasn't to bad. I
just didn't want to stay longer and have you get upset again. That was a
great thing you did back there. You actually started talking about you past
and even to one of the guys from school. Good for you!"

"Gene, I surprised myself, also. LeRoy put me at ease and I just started
talking. Felt good all over. You are right, we need to give him a call for
a get together. I just crossed one bridge and I know there are a many more
to cross. Thanks, Man. You are the best!"

"Bill, I have told you many times that there is good in everyone. You just
have to let it out a little at a time. Today is just the beginning."
