Angels

I pulled into the cemetery. I was dreading it, the emotions where already
starting to boil to the surface. Three years now since I lost James, three
Easters ago. He was on a business trip in New York and he really wanted to
spend the whole day Easter Sunday with my family and me. James' family had
never really accepted he was gay; and his relationship with his parents was
strained at best. Only his younger brother came to the funeral. He left New
York around midnight, it should have been a three hour drive. It was rainy
and he had worked all day on Saturday. James feel asleep at the wheel Near
New Haven, Connecticut and drove off the road.

As I got out of the car and started to walk to his grave, the tears
started flowing. I knelt at his tomb stone and sobbed. After a few minutes,
I was able to control my emotions. I started talking to him. I knew that
every time I came here I would never be able to move on. James was my rock,
the one person I trusted completely, and the one person I loved
unconditionally.

I stood and turned to head to my car and there he was just a few
feet away, my James. He smiled at me and I started crying again. Was I
going crazy, he turned and started walking away from me then stopped and
turned back and beckoned for me to follow. I did, no matter how much I
tried to catch-up to him he was always a few feet ahead of me. He
disappeared over a small rise and I ran to the top but he was gone. I fell
to me knees and screamed "James" and started crying uncontrollably.

"Hey, are you Okay?" I was startled; beside me was a guy close to
my age. He knelt down and put his hand on my shoulder. "Are you going to be
ok?"

I wiped my eyes and looked at him. He was beautiful even though his
eyes where puffy and red like he'd been crying. "I am so sorry; I must
look like a fool."

"No man you look like someone grieving. I know I looked the same
way a few minutes ago. Probably still do." He wiped the moisture from his
eye.

I stood up. "Who are you here for?" it was an awkward question but
I didn't know how else to ask it.

"My mom. She had a heart attack last year on Easter Sunday."

"My boyfriend was killed in a car crash three years ago on Easter
Sunday."

He smiled. "Kind of a weird thing to have in common. We both lost
loved ones on Easter Sunday."

"That is really weird. Where is your mom buried?"

"The far side of that hill over there."

I looked at him. "How did you come to be way over here?"

"It's weird and you'll think I am crazy if I told you."

I was definitely intrigued. Why did James led me here? Was it to
meet this other lost soul? "You might be surprised. James is buried way
over on that side. After visiting his grave, I thought I saw him standing
there and followed him over here. He disappeared and that's when I broke
down and you found me."

He started crying a little. "My mom,... She was right there at the
top of the hill. When I got there she was gone and I saw you kneeling
here."

We both started crying. We took a second to compose ourselves. I
reached out my hand to shake his. "I am Justin."

"Carl, nice to meet you Justin."

We both just smiled and there was an awkward silence for a minute.

He took a deep breath, "Justin there is a little coffee shop in
town would like to grab a cup of coffee with me."

I smiled at him. "I think that would be a great idea Carl."

We walked toward the parking area. Our cars were parked beside each
other. He paused at his car and looked over at me. "You want to ride with
me. I could bring you back to your car later."

"Yeah sure."I got in the car and we headed to the gates of the
cemetery I looked back as we were leaving and saw James standing there
smiling at me with his arm around a beautiful woman who appeared to be in
her mid-fifties. Both where smiling.
