Chapter 9.

The flight to Brisbane was less than 1.5 hours, but it felt like a life
time. I was sweating all the way, fear of flying? fear of height? fear of
plunging to earth? All of those, for sure, the dream run between me and
David, would it last? A Big Big "?". He held my hands all the way from
Sydney to Brisbane, until the plane landed in Brisbane Airport. During the
trip, I did look out the window, nothing except clouds, bloody boring.
Between David and me, we only took with us the Nike bag, all we brought
basically a change of undies and our tooth brushes. At the exit, a guy in
uniform held up a placard with Mr. Biggs on it. If it wasn't for David, I
would have walked straight pass him, never came across my mind my name
would appear in public. The limo was waiting outside of the terminal, I
was a tad disappointed it was a standard Stateman, wouldn't it be something
to turn up with a stretched limo, the talk of the town alright. The driver
introduced himself as John, after looking up the street directory for my
home, he said "with a bit of luck, we should arrive there just after ten as
the traffics are light at this hour, would you guys like the radio or some
music?" We declined.

We travelled in silence, David had his hand on my knee, and mine on his.
The memory of our first meeting came back to me. My hand crept up slowly
towards his groin, when it reached the fly, I pressed down onto his lump,
it grew instantly. I turned my head and watched him, he sat there
motionlessly, then slowly turned towards me, when he saw my wicked smile,
he uttered a hiss and said softly "behave or I'll kick you out of the car"
I looked at the driver, he was concentrating on his driving, probably
nothing would surprise him, or just being discreet? I reluctantly withdrew
my hand.

Fell asleep with the help of rocking motion of the car, getting up at 3:30
a.m. this morning was first for me. Next came a sudden jolt and then
someone was shaking me, "wake up, Josh, we're here" Our car stopped in
front of a single storey house with a small overgrown lawn, brown bricks,
sad, and lonely. "I think you better wait for me in the car" I said to
David. Then John the driver opened the door for me, a bit too much, will
never get use to this. When I stepped out of the car, I noticed next door
neighbor Betty Newman was gawking.

"Morning, Betty"

"Oh, is that you Josh" she quickly walked closer to the fence, "you are too
late for your sister's funeral, Josh" she continued "I'm so sorry, that
business of your poor sis Jenny" then she pointed at the limo "is that your
car?"

"No, not mine, its a hired car" "Oh?" she probably wondered how could I
afford that, curiosity killed that cat.

"Your mom took it badly, and I also know that she's been worried sick about
you, why didn't you call earlier, all these time she wondered what happened
to you" Curiosity, curiosity. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Newman, will you excuse me?
I need to talk to mom before my old man wakes up" Escaped from the clutch
of the nosy neighbor. I used my key to open the front door.

Mom was stunned with me appeared out of nowhere. She stood there staring
at me, disbelief all over her face. "Oh Josh" she muttered. "Mom, how are
you?" she didn't look good at all, dark rings around her eyes, hairs all
dried up, lips pale, old dress hung on her skeleton-like 5'6 frame. There
were little furnitures in the house. No T.V., no Hi-Fi, things of value
were sold off long ago to feed the old man's addiction. "Is he still in
bed?" she nodded. "Was sis buried or cremated?" She pointed at the urn on
the mantelpiece, then started sobbing. I felt the pain in my heart, walked
up to mom and put my arms around her. Tears rolling down my cheeks,
memories flooded back.

No time for sorrows, first thing first, "Mom, lets get out of here, I need
to have a quick word with you". I took her hand and we went outside.
Mrs. Newman was at the fence, waiting for us, no doubt. I ignored her and
went straight to the limo. John saw me and got out of the driver's side
and about to open the door for me. "Don't worry John, Thanks" I opened the
passenger door, "Mom, let me introduce Brother David, he is the one who
sponsored my trip and paid for all this". I ushered her into the middle and
I got inside next. "Thank you so much, Brother David, for looking after my
son" they were shaking hands. "John, could you please drive two blocks
down and turn left? and stop right next to the small park there please?"
"Sure"

"David, would you excuse us?" "Sure" Mom and I got out. We walked up to a
park bench and sat down. "Mom, my only purpose of this trip is to ask you
come and live with us in Sydney. She obviously didn't pick up on the word
"US".

"What about your father?"

"Let him be, that prick brought nothing but grieves to all of us for years"

"But he is still your father, and husband to me for the last 20 years" She
carried on about how he was a good father before the death of his parents,
a good provider, blab blab blab, it was all the fault of acoholm blab blab
blab.

"But what about the death of Jenny?"

"She was unstable before her death, you dad got drunk the night before her
suicide and just had a few harsh words with her, you can't blame him for
her death!" Blood rushed to my head.

"Oh Yeah? A few harsh words, eh? More like rape to me!"

"How could you say that about your Dad? He is a decent man despite of his
addiction, your sister had been telling lies about your dad for years
because of her illness, God bless her soul"

"So Jenny told you about the rapes? and you thought she was confused and
telling lies?"

"Yes, even her doctors said so" So Jenny was doomed from the start, I
should've stood up to the fucking prick and reported him, sorry, sorry,
sorry, my poor sis.

"Mom, I saw it with my own eyes, my own very eyes, we were sharing the same
room, remember? I was too afraid to say anything, it started when she was
only 13, and I was 14 then, and that bastard continued to rape here
throughout the years" This bit of information took all the oxygen out of
her, she went all pale and started shaking, her fists clenched, unclenched,
more tears, disbelief, revelation.

"I have been carrying all these guilts for years, if I had a bit of courage
and stood up to that piece of shit from the beginning, if I had told you
after I left home, Jenny would still be alive, I'm guilty, Mom, it's all my
fault, my inaction, I am ashamed, Mom, I'm so very sorry"

"No Josh, I'm partly to blame, all these years I thought they were her
crazy talks, Oh, my little girl, my poor Jenny" We hugged each other on the
bench, birds chirping, winds started to stir up the dust, "Mom, come with
me, he is not going to change, he will not get help, he is too deep into
the drinks" Resolution on her face.

"Lets go, Josh, I haven't got much to pack, I don't need much to live on,
all I need is a little bed somewhere at you place, it should be good enough
for me. I was blinded by my loyalty to him. No more deceptions. I have
enough, time for me to live my own life" Rejoice, thank you lord, and thank
you, once more, Brother David.

Mrs. Newman still at the fence, would she ever give up? Mom definitely
didn't have much to pack, it only took her less than half an hour to get
ready, all of her belongings in that dark garbage bag, talking about being
poor, we were at the bottom of the heap. "Mom, don't forget your driver's
license and Medicare card" "Thanks for reminding me, I'll get them now"

"Josh, do you have any money with you?" "Sure, Mom" I took out the wad of
cash David gave me. "How much do you need?" "A few hundreds, if its Okay
with you" "Here's 4 hundreds bucks" "Thanks, Josh, I'll pay you back
oneday" "Don't worry about it"

She found pen and paper, wrote a short note, put the cash on top of the
note. She still had the welfare of that bastard at her heart. She gave me
the garbage bag, eh, her belongings, to carry, then went over to the
mentelpiece and picked up the urn with sis's ashes, "Lets go". We opened
the front door and went out. Mrs. Newman was still at the fence! Mom went
over and kissed her on the cheeks, said her good-bye, murmured something
into Betty's ears, then left the house without once looked back.

I got in first this time, I wanted to be near my man, who saved not only
me, but also my Mom. When we were in the car, I asked David what should we
do now? things happened not as per plan. Mom sat there quietly, her
destiny in our hands. David made a few calls on his mobile, I heard the
mention of our names, then he turned and said "All done, we will be on the
evening flight back to Sydney, which is 7:30 p.m" Money helped to spin the
world around alright.

We bought her a little carry on bag on our way to the Brisbane Airport, she
now looked like a traveller, and it turned out to be her first ever flying
experience as well, she looked paler. It's in the family, fear of height!
