The Cabin by the Lake
Chapter 12

Terry, Kyle and Dennis moved the Mitchells belongings to the son's place in
California. When Mr. Mitchell was released from the hospital, his son,
Steve, took his mother and father to his home.

Jim found a senior retirement center for Aunt Sara and Uncle Lonnie in
LaPine, which was not very far from Christmas Valley. They fell in love
with the place at first sight. The center had an activity bus and it would
take the residents on tours to the coast, Crater Lake, concerts in Portland
and a whole host of other points of interest plus a lot of activities
within the compound itself. So there would be no `Woe is me. I am bored. I
wish I had something to do.' The problem would be finding time to do
everything!

Jim was thrilled with the Richardson farm and moved in with Terry. Kyle and
Dennis kept prying but were getting no answers but did get a lot of silly
grins. There were all kinds of tell-tale signs to indicate that they had
become a couple.

One day Dennis asked, "Dad, are you and Terry a couple. Don't try to cover
it up. I know the answer because it is written all over you!"

"Not officially. Terry and I both want to take it a little slowly and make
sure that this is what we want. I will tell you that Terry and I both have
found happiness and a reason to look forward to tomorrow."

"Hip, Hip Hurray!" shouted Kyle.

"Kyle, It looks like we are going to have two dads and very soon," beamed
Dennis.

Jim replied, "Hey, boys. Just don't rush us." Terry just nodded his head
and grinned ear to ear.

Dennis and Kyle found a young couple from Montana who had worked on a dude
ranch. Part of their job description included over-night camping trips. So
they were experienced with pack trips into the wilds and could work
together as a team or as individuals if need be.

So the summer outings were now in full swing. Already four groups were
taken out at the same time and there were bookings for more. Dennis and
Kyle had to purchase three large yurts(large circular tents that could
sleep 8 or more people). Of course they had to hire two additional college
kids to help out and two to help Loretta.

Terry and Jim made several trips to the lake for a `visit' Regardless of
how hard they tried to help, they were still treated as guests. Both men
were very proud of their boys and the work that they were doing. It was
very clear to Terry and Jim that the boys were doing an excellent job
running the Wilderness Experience and could handle any problem that
arose. It was hard for them to realize how Dennis and Kyle had matured and
grown into young adults in such a short time.

Kyle and Dennis were receiving more bookings than they had in the past. The
boys were contemplating hiring two more packers, Terry and Jim, to help
them out. One night all of the good took a turn for the worse.

There was knock on the door, and Dennis went to answer it. When he opened
the door, two men were standing of the porch, one with a gun pointed at
Dennis's head. They forced their way into the living room.

One of men said, "Hey, you on the sofa, freeze or this guy is history.
Don't make me blow his brains out! Now, you get over there and sit down by
your friend and make it snappy! Move it!"

Dennis just stood his grounds and said, "Why, don't you tell us what is
going on!"

"Just shut your mouth! You are just asking for a bullet."

Dennis could see that the man meant business and sat down next to Kyle and
took his hand in his. Kyle was as white as a sheet and was literally
shaking all over as was Dennis. "Kyle, take some deep breaths. Come on in
and out. in and out. Keep it up and don't try to do anything. The best
thing to do is try and relax a little. It appears that we can't do anything
but cooperate."

"Listen to your friend, Kyle. It just might save both your lives. The two
of you will be separated and one of us will be with each of you all the
time. If either one on you should do anything out of the ordinary, the
other gets a bullet right between the eyes. We held up a bank in Redmond
and shot a guard, so two more killings won't matter. However, if we have
your complete cooperation, the two of you may make it out alive. If I don't
have your word, then you will have to be tied up and gagged for the
duration. You can color you friend, Kyle, dead. You will be also at the end
of this ordeal. If you both give us your word, then both of you could come
out alive. Your choice."

"I know that our chances are very slim and maybe even zero that we can even
hope to come out this unharmed. How do I know that you will keep your
word?" asked Dennis.

"Kid, at least you have a level head on your shoulders. Once I give my
promise, I mean to keep it. I hope that you will do the same."

"Before I can make any promises, I have to know what your plans are ,and
what you want of us," stated Dennis. Kyle had started to calm a little and
could see where Dennis was headed. Kyle knew that he could trust Dennis and
decided to let him do the talking.

"By the way what is your name kid? We know the other young man is Kyle. I
am Jack and my partner is Walt."

"My name is Dennis. I still want to know what is going on. So far you
haven't given me any clues."

"Dennis, as you know we are on the run. We stole a car in Redmond and came
here. We knew that you ran a packing operation in the wilderness. We didn't
just happen to find our way to your doorstep. We have been planning this
little hold-up for some time. We knew that you and Kyle are both guides and
know the country well. Now here is our plan. Walt will take the car to
highway 97 near LaPine and ditch it. He will torch it and leave. We will
take one of your cars, pick him up and all of us will come back here and
you two will guide us through the Sisters Wilderness Area. You are to get
us as close to Eugene as possible. Then we will call some friends who will
meet us and we will be gone. You and Kyle will be free and will live to
tell your grandkids all about what happened to you. At no time are you to
try and contact the police or solicit help from any one that we may meet on
the trails. If you try to escape, it will be curtains for both of you. You
probably have forest service radios and cell phones. The radios will
remain here and we will take the cell phones. What you do after we are gone
is completely up to you. So do we have a deal?" Jack asked

"Jack, before I can make any promises, I need to talk with Kyle alone. Each
of you can stand on the other side of those doors. There is no other way
out of the room. We will talk in low voices. Are you going to grant this?"
asked Dennis.

"Sure thing, Dennis. Just don't go planning your escape. I am beginning to
like the two of you and I would hate to put an end to our `friendship',"
Jack said. "Walt, you take that door and I'll cover the other."

The boys started speaking in very soft voices, "Dennis, are you really
going to go along with all of this? How do you know you can trust them?"

"Kyle, I don't know! What other choice do we have. I can promise you that I
am not going to do anything that will put you in harms way. If we play our
cards right, the Wilderness is a mighty big area and anything might
happen. Right now I think we had better play their little game. Are you
with me?"

"Of course, I am not going to let anything happen to you, if I can help
it."

"Walt and Jack, you can come back in now." Dennis said loud enough so Jack
and Walt could hear. "You have our promise not to do anything foolish. We
will do as you tell us," said Dennis.

"And you have ours. Walt and I are planning on leaving tomorrow
afternoon. Can you be ready to go then?"

"We should be able to make it in the morning. It shouldn't take us long to
get ready. First I need to make a phone call. I'll ask my dad and his
friend to come out and take over while we are gone. I will call in the
morning so that they won't come out tonight. I will put it on speaker so
you can hear both conservations. OK?"

"I really don't like the idea, but I can see where you are coming from. If
you just disappeared then all our plans will go by the wayside. Just be
careful what you say," Jack said. "I need some rope to tie you up tonight."

Kyle said, "Would handcuffs be suitable, we do have two sets and keys?"

"That would be just fine. We will have the only keys. Won't we?" Jack
asked.

" I doubt if we are handcuffed to the bed, that we would be able to use any
others. Yes, you will have the only key," Kyle said with a little
irritation in his voice.

Dennis spent the rest of the day and evening getting ready for the trip
over the mountains. Poor Kyle spent the time handcuffed to the refrigerator
door. He was told that if he tried to escape or cause any trouble he would
be signing Dennis's death warrant. He could sit or stand but that was the
extent of his movement. Dennis finally had everything ready to go, Now all
they had to do was wait until morning.

Kyle and Dennis were handcuffed to beds in different rooms so they couldn't
talk with each other. Jack and Walt choose to sleep in the rooms with the
boys. They knew that by doing this they could keep tractkof what the boys
were doing.

Dennis waited until he was sure that Walt was asleep. His writing arm was
free and he could reach the drawer in the end table where he kept writing
material. He felt around and found a small spiral notebook and pencil. It
was a bright moonlit night and he could see well enough to write a note for
his dad and Terry.

He held the notebook in his handcuffed hand and wrote Kyle and I are being
held captive by two armed bank robbers from Redmond. We are on Trail 57 to
Eugene. Don't do anything until you hear from us. Will call when I
can. Don't call the police. These guys are very dangerous and have already
killed a guard and they won't hesitate to do the same to us. Kyle and I
will not upset them and maybe we can escape. Dennis

Dennis slipped the notebook inside his jeans pocket and would try to leave
it tomorrow. Now it was time to try to get some sleep. Walt never even
stirred the whole time.

The next morning Kyle and Dennis made breakfast. After breakfast Dennis was
permitted to make his phone call.

"Hi, Terry. I have to ask a favor of you and Dad. Kyle and I both will gone
for about ten days. We had some unscheduled guests arrive and they wanted
to just wander around in the wilderness area. Could you and Dad come out
and run the place while we are gone?" "Sure thing, Dennis. Where are you
going in the Wilderness and when are you leaving?"

"Oh, I don't know the guys want to just wander and lose themselves for
awhile. No schedules, eat and sleep when we want to, fish or just plain
loaf. The plan is tomorrow morning. So you can come sometime in the
afternoon."

"Sounds good, I wish we were going with you!"

"Maybe next time. Tell Dad Hello for me. Oh, Terry, you had better bring
some eggs with you. I think the ones in the frig are going bad. Check them
out right away when you get here and toss them if they are bad. I don't
want them stinking up the whole house. We will see you later. Bye, Terry,"
Dennis said closing the cell phone.

"You did fine. I sure didn't want to shoot you after all we did give each
other our words. I can see you are going to live up to you end of the
bargain. Well, guess what? I am too," said Jack.

"Jack, if you and Walt are ready to leave, all we have to do is load the
pack mules and be on our way," Dennis said.

"Then let's get going. There is nothing to hang around here for," said
Walt.

"I have a little more cleaning to do in the kitchen and then it is show
time," Dennis said.

"Then get with it. I need your cell phones," said Jack.

"Here is the only one that we have that is in working order. Kyle's is
broken and we haven't had a chance to get into town and get another one."
said Dennis reaching into his pocket and handing the phone to Jack.

"Kyle, why don't you take Jack and the two of you can start loading the
mules. I have the packs all ready to be put on the animals. Walt can stay
in here and babysit me." said Dennis. Dennis puttered around the kitchen
and finally had a chance to slip the notebook into the egg carton. "I need
to throw some clothes into a bag and then we can go help the other two so
we can get out of here."

"Dennis, just a word of warning: Don't make Jack mad and by all means don't
let your guard down. In other words, Don't trust him," warned Walt.

Soon the little party was headed out and were very quickly out of sight of
the house. Both Dennis and Kyle were wondering if they would make it out
alive. They had to give it their best shot. Jack took the lead and Walt
brought up the rear. Both had their guns out and ready to use them if
needed.

"I will stay in the lead. When the trail forks, you can tell me which way
to go. Just make sure you don't try any funny business. Understand?" said
Jake waving the gun in Kyle and Dennis' direction.

"We understand perfectly, and it is for sure we don't want to get shot,"
replied Dennis. "Kyle and I are going to take you out of here on the
shortest and quickest route." We left all our maps at home. If you had one
of them , you wouldn't need us. You will just have to trust us and we will
have to trust you. If you do by chance have a map, it probably won`t do you
any good. The trails have only numbers and no landmark names. There are
special maps for those who want to travel on their own. I doubt that you
have one because if you did you wouldn't need us. So you will need us to
get you out!"
