The Cabin by the Lake

Chapter 15

Dennis called his dad, who was in an area that had no cell service. He left
the following message: `Dad, everything is fine now. The bank robbers have
been captured. We're about a half day from the trailhead. We've turned
around and are headed home. Give us a call when you reach an area where you
have cell service. Hi! Terry. Love both of you. Bye.'

They were just getting close to the lake where they were going to camp for
the night. Kyle's phone rang. "Hi! Mom. We're in the Wilderness Area and
may lose you at anytime. Yes, we'll be out by the week-end. You sure
can. We'd love to see you and do we have a story to tell you. Mom! No, we
have not become domestic partners. We're still just young little boys
playing house but we'll let you know when we decide to grow up," laughed
Kyle. "Sure, see you Friday night. Bye Mom. Dennis sends his love. Love
you."

He had just finished his call when Dennis' phone rang. "Hi! Dad! You must
be in a good area. We've a very good connection. You're at Gooseneck Lake?
That's only three hours from here. If we push it a little we should make it
in one or two hours at the most and will be there before dark for
sure. Everything is going our way. We'll tell you all about our experience
shortly. Good, we'll see you soon. Bye."

A little over an hour went by and the two parties were united. After hugs
and introductions were given, the guys went about setting up camp. "Dennis,
you have been elected to cook dinner tonight. The rest of us will get
firewood, secure the livestock for the night, and finish setting up
camp. By the way, what are we having?” Terry asked jokingly.

"Oh, I was thinking about scorched egg omelet over burnt toast, moldy salad
with no dressing, coffee so thick you can stand a spoon in it and mud pies
for dessert," Dennis responded with a straight face.

After a very tasty dinner of egg omelet with all the trimmings, the group
pulled some logs in near the fire to be use for chairs. Kyle and Dennis
told their story about the robbery suspects and how they were
captured. They also told how Walt was a victim and their plans to support
him all the way.

"Boys, we'd like to join you in your efforts to get Walt free of the
charges. So, if we all pool our resources and work together, the courts
won't stand a fighting chance," Dad said. "I guess you know, Terry and I
are very proud of all of you both! It is very hard to keep such level heads
under such bizarre circumstances, however, you did it."

"Dad, I notice you and Terry are sitting there holding hands. Does that
mean that you two have become a couple?" asked Kyle. "Not legally. As you
know, we both lost our partners and were struggling to go on. We've decided
to join forces and fight all those evil dragons together. It's a great
feeling just knowing someone is by your side and you don't have to go on
alone," Dad said.

"I think the best thing that has happen to us is finding a good partner who
has been there and done that. We don't have to walk a mile in the other's
moccasins. I think that's the best healing medicine for both of us. We can
forget about the past and focus on the future and lots of good times on
ahead," Terry said supporting Dad.

"Don't let him fool you. Anytime, anywhere, I bend over Terry is right
there behind me. I think he has more sex drive than a dozen teenagers. I'm
not complaining because I get my share of the fun," grinned Dad.

"Actually, your dad is the oversexed teenager. If he continues like he's
going, he'll wear his equipment out before a year is up. I'll lose so much
weight from all the exercise that I'll waste away to nothing and end up in
a nursing home," laughed Terry giving Jim a small bop, actually just a
little love tap, on the shoulder. Jim didn't say anything but grabbed Terry
and gave him a long, hard kiss.

"You know getting the farm was probably the best thing that could have
happened to the two of you. Dad, how are Aunt Sara and Uncle Lonnie
adjusting to life in Oregon?" asked Dennis.

"They absolutely love it. Recently, we bought a two bedroom manufactured
home and set it up at the ranch. We moved them into it. It is close to the
main house and they have a small garden and flower patch to call their
own. They can spend a lot time just sitting on the front porch watching the
sunset. Moving them out here was the best thing that could have
happened. Otherwise, they would have been pigeon holed in some old nursing
home," Dad said beaming with pride.

"Gee, Dad, that's swell. You don't think the winters will be too hard on
them?" asked Dennis

"Oh, I don't think so. They won't have to be out in the weather, and they
have a free standing wood-burning fireplace. They can to curl up by it and
then just let it snow. Aunt Sara can do her knitting and Uncle Lonnie can
catch up on his sleeping," Dad said.

During the night, a big thunderstorm moved into the area and the guys had
to delay their departure for a day to let the trails dry out a bit. So out
came the cribbage board and a round robin tournament was set up. In fact
several tournaments were played that day with different winners every
time. The next day, the little party set out for home.

Upon reaching headquarters, the first order of business was to take Walt to
Redmond to turn himself in. When they reached Redmond, they had a big
surprise. The police had moved Jack to a holding cell in Redmond and they
had the other guy, who was involved with the robbery in custody. He was
indeed an insider and had turned off all the alarms. The police did not
want Walt in the same facility and told him that no charges would be filed
against him. However, he would have to go before a judge in open court. A
date was set for two weeks layer.

Walt's parents had been notified that Walt was back in town and that he was
safe and had suffered no harm. Arrangements had been made to have them meet
Walt in Bend. The police wanted to make sure that everyone was out of harms
way before letting them leave protective custody.

"We have a brand new double-wide manufactured home that we have just moved
on to our place in Christmas Valley. We are not related in any way to Walt
and his parents, nor do we know any of their friends. They are perfect
strangers to us. With name changes there would be absolutely no way for
anyone to find them," Terry announced. "We would like to offer the family a
place to stay. They would be welcome to stay after all the legal matters
are settled. We actually bought the house for the hired hand that we were
going to hire. So Walt if you want the job, it's yours."

"I'll have to talk with my parents and let you know later. Thanks!" Walt
remarked.

"That would be an appropriate and most desirable arrangement. May I make a
phone call and talk with Walt's parents and see what they have to say? I
don't want to give out their number to anyone, including Walt," said the
police sergeant "Walt, is this agreeable with you. I want to make sure all
parties are in agreement before I make any calls. I don't want any
slip-ups."

"I can see no reason to reject the offer. I'm most appreciative of this
generous plan. I thank you with all my heart," Walt said with tears in his
eyes. "You guys have already done far more than I could have
expected. Without you, I would probably be lying dead along the wilderness
trail. Thanks again."

"Don't forget, Walt, that you had a hand in our escape. Without it, we
could all be lying by the trail. Thank you!" said Kyle.

The sergeant came back into the room. "Walt, your parents agreed with the
plan. When you get into Bend call this number." He handed a piece of paper
to Terry. "This number will take you to a private line in the Police
Lieutenant's office. He'll call Walt's folks and will go and pick up them
and their belongings. No one is to know where the safe house is. We can use
it again if need be. Terry, you will need a small U-haul trailer to haul
everything."

"Not a problem! We can all go to Christmas Valley and then Dennis, Kyle,
and I can head for Elk Lake to pick up my car. Dennis and Kyle, I doubt
very much that you guys will want to return to Christmas Valley. You have a
four-day pack trip coming up in two days. There will be two families
together consist ing of 4 adults and 6 kids ages 8 to 14. I think you need
to conserve as much of your strength as possible. You will need every ounce
of it," laughed Dad.

"Thanks, Dad, you're no fun at all," responded Dennis.

"Oh, I wouldn't go so far as to say that. He is really a fun guy," grinned
Terry.

"Sergeant, I think we will head out of here. We have a lot of traveling to
do. We'll say good-by and catch you on the next trip through," Terry said.

Terry and friends made connections with Mr. and Mrs. Larsen (new name),
Walt's parents. After a short reunion all of them headed for Christmas
Valley. They had ample time to become acquainted and had an enjoyable time
just visiting. Mrs. Larsen was almost over-come from all the good that was
being given to her and her family. Walt and Mr. Larsen were going through
the same emotions and feelings. When the SUV pulled into the driveway and
stopped, she completely lost it. Walt was right by her side and finally
calmed her.

Jim had called Aunt Sara and Uncle Lonnie and had told them what was
happening and they were there on the front porch of the big house ready to
greet everyone. After introductions, they all went into the house for some
cold iced tea and chocolate cake. Dennis and Kyle treated Aunt Sara and
Uncle Lonnie as grandparents that they never had. Of course Dennis and Kyle
were being spoiled and actually no one was complaining.
