The Cabin by the Lake
Chapter 17 Final Chapter

Kyle's parents arrived at the Lake. They were astonished with the stories
the boys told them . They were amazed that the boys had managed to survive.

"Look, you two, we leave you alone for a short time, and what happens, not
once but twice. I think that the only thing we can do is move in with you
so we can protect and supervise you," chuckled Kyle's Dad. "Actually, we
are extremely happy that both of you are safe and unhurt. The worst case
scenario could have been disaster. Just kidding about moving in with you. I
doubt that my heart would stand up to all the excitement you two create."

"John and I are about to make a great big life change. We're going to
retire and use the money that we inherited to buy a little campground on
the southern Oregon coast," said Jennie.

"The owners have beach front property and have received a zoning change
making the beach clothing optional. I guess you know that we're just
walking on air. We've put earnest money down. We're in the final stages of
closing on the property. I can't believe that we are finally going to work
for ourselves and not someone else," said John.

"Mom and Dad, I think this is absolutely fabulous. If you want to use the
money that I inherited from Grandma and Grandpa, you can have it if you
want. If and when you start turning big profits, you can pay me back if you
want but you don`t have to," Kyle said with pride.

"John and Jennie, I want to ask you a very personal question. With your
money and Kyle's, will you be able to get the campground free and clear or
will you have to finance some of it?" asked Dennis.

"To be perfectly honest with you, Dennis, we'll be about $50,000 short,"
replied John.

"I'd like to pick up the remaining tab. I've wanted to get some beach front
property since I left Coos Bay. I miss our property that we had there. We
could get a pickup and camper and come down when we have time with nothing
to do," Dennis said.

"Are you sure that you want to do this?" asked Jennie.

"I'm positive. You've invested a lot of money, time, and love in this
guy. I appreciate all that you have done for him. He is my very, very best
friend. So I want to pay you back," Dennis said, putting his arm around
Kyle's waist. "So when you get the final figures, just let me know what my
share is and I'll send a check! "

Jennie had tears in her eyes. "These are just happy tears. I have two of
best boys in the whole world. I just wish that you could give me
grandchildren."

"You'll never know what modern science will come up with next. I'll just
let Kyle have the dozen children. I'm a big chicken and can't stand pain,"
laughed Dennis.

"That's what you think, Buster! I'll hide your pills from you and let you
suffer the consequences!" said Kyle, joining in with the laughter.

"I don't think either one of you will have to worry. Science isn't that
good, yet," countered Jennie, laughing along with the boys.

"You know guys, you could always adopt some. We'd love them and spoil them
just like they were our own flesh and blood. I know that the two of you
would make wonderful parents," John said.

"Dad, we've have talked about adopting before. Dennis and I are getting a
lot closer to becoming domestic partners," Kyle said with a twinkle in his
eye. "Mom, how do you feel about all of this?"

"I've always wanted to be the mother of the bride, but I guess I'll just
have to settle on being the mother of two grooms. In short, I love
it. Should I start picking out my dress?"

"I wouldn't just yet. I'm still waiting on that special someone to ask
me. I just wish that he would hurry up and do so. I'm getting tired of
waiting," complained Kyle.

Dennis dropped to one knee, "Kyle, I love you with all my heart! Would you
become my partner for life?"

Kyle dropped to one knee and took Dennis' hand in his. "Dennis, I've loved
you from the very first day I met you. Of course I'll become your
partner. Will you become my partner?"

"Yes!" said Dennis, taking Kyle in his arms, kissing him long and hard.

Jennie and John just stood there hugging each other with tears rolling down
their cheeks. "Kyle and Dennis, Jennie and I would like to be the first to
congratulate the two of you. You've made us the happiest people in the
whole world."

"I can't say anything." All I want to do right now is hug and kiss both of
you," said Jennie, hugging and kissing them.

"Kyle, let's go into Bend tomorrow and fill out the paper work and ask
Rev. Carl to perform the ceremony a week from Saturday. That will give us
almost two weeks. We can invite all our friends out for a big party after
the ceremony. I want to call Dad and Terry and let them in on the good news
and they can bring everyone from the ranch with them," suggested Dennis.

"Man, don't just stand there, make your call. I'll start going through my
little black book calling friends. You can help me. Mom, do you and Dad
have anyone you would like to invite? We can fill the Bed and Breakfast,
the big house, the yurts, and we've lots of tents we can use," Kyle said.

"Let's stop by Country Catering while we are in Bend and have them cater
the shindig. How many people do you think will be here?" asked Dennis.

"Oh, I would say 50 or 60. Why don't you say 75? If there is food left,
people can take it home with them. I'll call our friend Alice and ask her
to make the cake. Mom, what are we forgetting?" asked Kyle.

"Nothing, I can think of, right off hand. Are you going to have fancy suits
and all that formal stuff?" Jennie replied with a question of her own.
"What do you think Dennis?" inquired Kyle.

"I personally would like to just have a good old country style ceremony,
very informal, very casual dress," replied Dennis. "I think that is a
marvelous idea," Jennie said.

"Are you going on a honeymoon?" asked John.

"Dennis and I haven't even discussed any of this before. I am for waiting
until after the summer and hunting seasons and before the winter season
starts. We just have too much to do before we can leave," Kyle said. "We'll
have to do some adjusting of our schedules and make sure we have that
weekend free. I want to have all our employees here with us. We can`t leave
them out."

"I agree. We can always give those who are already scheduled a free
vacation on us. We're booked until after the hunting seasons. There's no
way we could get away before then." Dennis said. "Kyle, how do you feel
about presents. I for one would prefer not to have presents."

"Hey, that's fine with me. Rather than call everyone, let's just send an
e-mail. Then all we would have to do is compose the letter, `select all'
and hit send. You know how long it will take to make all those phone
calls." Kyle said. "It would be a nightmare waiting to happen. Think of all
the writing we would have to do just writing thank you notes, if we had
presents."

"Hey, good thinking. I'm going to give Dad a call now and fill him in on
everything that's going to happen. So I guess I'll see you in about an
hour," laughed Dennis.

Saturday, the day of the party, arrived and the place became a
beehive. Things fell into place and soon it was time for the event to take
place.

After the ceremony, Rev. Carl said, "Please remain seated. Jim and Terry,
would you please come to the front please." A buzz started going through
the crowd. Dennis just leaned over, buried his head in his hands and
started sobbing. Kyle took him in his arms and held him.

"Terry and Jim have decided to become domestic partners today as well. They
wanted to keep it a secret and wait until Dennis and Kyle were officially
`hitched'. I'll now perform the ceremony for them." said Rev. Carl.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the two happy couples have asked not to have a
reception line. They'll spend the rest of the day and evening mingling
among you. They've requested that the only line be the chow line. I'd like
to bless the food now. Then, you can form a stampede and run for the food."

The two couples just stood there hugging each other. People walked by and
gave them a pat on the back and continued moving toward the food. County
Caterers took charge of setting the food tables and serving. People from
the church brought all the chairs and tables. Jennie had taken care of all
the flowers and decorations. So all Dennis and Kyle had to do but sit back
and relax. Sure that is all, ha!

Dennis was still having a hard time getting his emotions under
control. Kyle just continued holding him and would give him a kiss on the
check occasionally. Finally, Dennis was able to speak. "Dad and Terry, you
have made me the happiest person in the whole world. Dad, you and Kevin
were the best parents and I never had to want or ask for anything. You were
always there for me. When Kevin died, I thought our world had been
completely destroyed. I thought you would never love again," Dennis had to
stop for a minute before going on.

"Terry, you came into our lives and changed all of that. I will always hold
Kevin in my heart and will remember him always. However, I have a heart big
enough to love everyone. Terry, you and Kyle have moved right in and turned
my world upside down. Terry, I want you to be my dad and now I'll have two
parents once again. The only difference is that the two of you will have
two sons to raise. Are you up to that little chore? Love you, man."

"You bet I am. I just hope that I don't have to give either one of you a
spanking because you'e both bigger than me and would probably end up giving
me one instead. Love you back, Dennis. Love you, too, Kyle. I think Stan
leaving me was the best thing that could have happened . Kyle, you and
Dennis wouldn't let me give up and quit. Because of your determination, I
met the most wonderful man and fell in love all over again. This time for
good. I am proud to accept the position of husband and father."

"I think we've ignored our guests long enough. We'd better be social and
visit with out friends and neighbors. We can continue this discussion for
the rest of our lives." Jim said , taking Terry's hand and leading him
toward the crowd who werewaiting for them.

"Speech! Speech!" became the chant. It was plain to see that this had to be
done before any food was eaten. Jim raised his hand and it became
quiet. "This is going to be the shortest speech in history. I was lucky to
find this man to love and to receive his love back. Our door is always open
if you want to hear more. Kyle, your turn."

"I' won't say I was lucky. I had a guardian angel looking out for me. She
did her job and made sure that we would be joined together for life," said
Kyle.

"I'm glad all of you came. Thanks! I think I'll just save my speech and let
all of you finish getting your food, I'm about to starve, but I can wait
until the line is gone and, no, I will not take 'cuts. I will talk the rest
of the day and well into the night. All of you will be a captive audience
and won`t be able to leave. I have fixed the cars so they won`t run,"
smiled Dennis.

The Clarks walked up to Kyle and Dennis. They were each leading two small
children, all under the age of 12. "Boys, I've a big favor to ask of
you. I'd like to talk with the two of you alone."

"Mom and Dad, would you please take these kids and get them some
food. Dennis and I will join you later, Thanks!" said Kyle. "You bet we
will. Don't hurry because this will be a special treat for us!" said
Jenny. The two smallest boys grabbed her around her waist and hugged her
for some time. Finally, they all moved to the chow line.

"Boys, the children's parents and grandparents were on their way to a
church retreat and would be gone for the entire weekend. The van was hit
broadside by a drunk, who ran a red light. Everyone in the van was
killed. Fortunate, the kids had been left with a sitter. Now to my
problem. Every single foster home that I have at my disposal is completely
full. I have absolutely no place to put the children. Then I thought about
the two of you. Please, could you help me out until I can find a place for
them?"

"Mrs. Clark, we don't even have to talk this over. Of course, we will take
the children. We have a 3 day pack trip starting tomorrow. We will just
take them with us. Mom and Dad are going to be along so they will get lots
and lots of attention. I know those kids need to have lots of love and
something to take their minds off their tragic loss. Nothing would be
better than riding a horse all day, receiving lots and lots of dog kisses,
sleeping in a tent, sitting around a campfire making s'mores, and catching
grasshoppers for fish bait. There are probably another hundred things just
waiting to happen. Mrs. Clark, we are not certified to be foster
parents. Can we legally take these kids?" asked Kyle.

"I don't know what you are talking about. Of course you're certified. I did
all the paperwork before we came to the lake. All I need is a couple of
signatures. I just knew that you would agree. I'm looking at least a
month," Mrs. Clark replied. "Dennis, we haven't heard from you. How do you
feel about all of this."

"I feel 310% the same as Kyle. However, you might be able to twist our arms
until we agree to take the children on a permanent basis." Dennis said,
with a smile all over his face.

"Kyle and Dennis, This may not come as a surprise to you, but I've already
contacted some of the close relatives, and they would like to come out and
meet with you." Mrs. Clark added.

Thus, this segment in the lives of Kyle and Dennis comes to a close. There
may be a sequel or two later. Thanks for sticking with me this long. So I
say hugs and kisses to all of you. Have a good one and please be safe! Joe
