The Cabin by the Lake
Chapter 7

Terry and Stan were in Hawaii soaking up sun and just loafing on the
beach. Richard and Loretta had flown to Georgia to visit their son and
grandchildren. The place was deserted except for Dennis and Kyle

Kyle and Dennis spent the few days left before Christmas planning and
organizing their little party. The last day before the guests arrived, they
spent cooking mincemeat pies, making sourdough bread, and sweet potato
salad. They baked a mountain of cookies for all the kids-young and old, to
spoil their appetites, along with 4 different kinds of homemade candy. They
fixed several bowls of non-alcohol punch and a couple of gallons of hot
buttered rum mix, again to be used without the alcohol. They made three
gallons of spiced apple cider and all that was needed was for it to be
heated and served. Dennis and Kyle hoped that no one would want liquor, but
just in case there would be some on hand..

All that was left was take the snowcats and go pick up the guests. Dennis
and Kyle decided that each of them would take a snow cat because one would
not be large enough for all the people, luggage, presents and what ever the
guests decide to bring with them. Both of the guys knew how to handle the
cat and really enjoyed driving, so now there would be no arguments over who
would drive. Actually, there were never any arguments. Whoever jumped in
the drivers seat first became the driver.

Dennis and Kyle were the last to arrive in the parking lot. When they
pulled up, people started piling out of vehicles and the activities
bus. Kids, decked out in their new snow gear were running everywhere,
throwing snowballs at everyone. The parking lot turned into one big
battleground and the snowball fight started. Kids vs. Adults. The kids won
because the adults tired first and gave up the battle. Soon, it was time to
load the snowcats and head for Elk Lake and the fun that lay ahead.

Of course, all the kids wanted to ride in one snowcat, so Dennis put them
in Kyle's cat.

"You just wait, Dennis I will get even with you."

"Just remember, Kyle, you were this age once. Just grin and bear it!"
Dennis said laughing. "I get to pick my punishment!"

"Oh, no you don't. The kids and I will tackle you and fill your pants with
snow and tie you up so you can't get out of them," roared Kyle. "You'll
have a first class case of blue balls and it won't be from lack of sex,
either!"

"John, would you just look at Kyle. He is so happy and relaxed. I think
someone up above was looking out for him. I was afraid for awhile that his
break-up would have bad effects on him," Jennie said.

"Jennie, I don't think we have to worry about him any longer. Even if this
turns out just to be a romantic fling, I think Kyle has put the gloom and
doom behind him. I think he is just living in the present now and just
taking a peek at the future," John replied. "All aboard! Let's move out!"
shouted Kyle.

It is a good thing that the cats were loaded before the snowball fight
because it took only about 30 seconds for the parking lot to become void of
people. The snowcats were equipped with a PA system. Kyle and Dennis
explained the agenda for the week ahead while driving to the cabin by the
lake.

It was Christmas Eve so the first item on the agenda was a Christmas
party. After rooms were assigned and every one had moved his or her belongs
into them, everyone went to the big house for the party.

First the tree had to be decorated. Kyle wanted every thing on it to be
hand made. Each person had to join making the decorations. He started
popping corn to string. More popcorn was eaten than strung, so he was busy
for a long time. Dennis got out the cranberries. Every one got a needle and
thread and the cranberries were strung. Paper chains were quickly made and
draped all around the room. There were lots of colored paper, crayons,
scissors, glue, and glitter available. One of the teenage boys used
aluminum foil to make a star for the top of the tree. He had learned to
make a three dimensional one when he was in elementary school and still
remembered how to do it. Soon the best looking tree in the whole country
was standing in the center of the room. Kyle had gotten his wish, not a
single store-bought ornament was on the tree. The crowd just stood around
the tree clapping.

Now the fun part was ready to begin. It was time to open presents. The
youngest children were selected to play `Santa Clause' and distribute the
gifts but no one could open them until every last one lay in front of its
intended receiver.

"Ok, rip those packages open! Don't waste anymore time!" shouted Dennis.

Squeals of delight filled the room. Everyone received gifts from Dennis and
Kyle. After all the packages were open, Kyle escorted the group into one of
the bedrooms where all the big things had been stored, such as bikes, skate
boards, scooters, and computers. What was a surprise was that Judy Clark
had taken the families shopping and had each member buy one thing for the
boys. Everyone had to make cards to give to the boys. Needless to say Kyle
and Dennis had a overload of cds and movies. Both Dennis and Kyle were
overcome with emotion with what they received , but they liked the home
made cards the best of all.

Edith, one of the mothers, stood up and with tears running down her checks
announced, "Please, may I have your attentions." My husband and I lost our
jobs right after Christmas a year go. We have not been able to find work
and begging on the street corners did not help. We were just about ready to
give up. Roger and I were thinking about committing robbery so that our
children could have one last Christmas. We both knew that we would end up
in prison and our children placed in foster homes. Only one thing stopped
us. Ms. Clark knocked on our door and took us to meet you two angles-in-
disguise. Dennis and Kyle, you are both so young but you are giants in our
eyes and hearts. I want to take this time to show you our appreciation."
Edith could not go and was crying uncontrollably.

Her husband, Roger, stood, "Boys, what she is trying to say is THANKS! You
have given us the courage and strength to go on. Without you , our lives
would have been over. Some how, some way, We will find a way to repay you."
Now he had tears running down his cheeks. Everyone in the room was
standing, clapping, and crying.

Everyone began to chant. "Thank you!"

Dennis stood and raised his hands. Immediately a hush fell over the
room. "Kyle, please come and stand by my side. You are involve in all of
this and have put as much time and effort in the planning and preparing for
this celebration as I have. Friends, we appreciate your gratitude and
appreciation that you have shown. That is enough repayment for us. I
inherited a rather large estate from my mother. Kyle came into my life a
short time ago. We decided that this year, we wanted to give some of it
back and give some families A Christmas to remember. Giving is what
Christmas is all about. You have given us far more than we have given. So
for the rest of the week, we want each of you to enjoy being here, and
leave your troubles behind. Let's make this the best Christmas
ever. Tonight in your prayers, let's thank God for making all this
possible. What do you say? Let's get the party started!"

"Yes!" Everyone shouted back.

Everyone rushed the boys and started hugging and kissing them. Then they
turned to their neighbors and hugged them. Now the fun began.

Hot buttered rums, hot spiced apple cider and punch were placed on a large
table si everybody could serve themselves. Dennis and Kyle brought out the
mountain of cookies and other treats out of the kitchen. One of the women
went to the piano and started playing Christmas carols. Everyone joined in
the singing. Some a little off key, but who cared!

The singing was starting to run down and it was obvious that something else
was needed to take it's place. "Hey Dennis, what do you say about taking
our guests downstairs to the game room and turn them loose. I am sure that
everyone will find something to do occupy their time," suggested Kyle.

"Good idea. Thanks Man! You just saved the party. Since this is your idea,
you're in charge," responded Dennis. "You got it! Hey, Everyone. For the
rest of the evening each person is on his or her own and must find their
own entertainment. To help you out a little, please follow me downstairs to
my most favorite room in the whole house. Refill your drinks and grab some
goodies and let's be off," Kyle said.

"We are going to the basement where there is an unbelievable game room. You
will find shuffleboard, pinball machines , electronic games, video games,
foosball tables, table tennis, air hockey, pool tables, card tables, and
all kinds of board games. There's even a miniature bowling alley. I
probably forgot half the stuff that is down there. I am sure everyone can
find something to do. If not, we have a separate room with a big screen
TV. If you are ready, let's be on our way," Kyle informed the guests. "In
fact, you will think that we have our own penny-arcade. I guess in a way we
do."

The guests all sucked air when they saw the game room. Squeals of delight
was all that could be heard. Everyone split and went to their favorite game
only to be joined by one or more of their friends.

At midnight, one of the mothers announced that her family would be going to
bed. She had let her children stay up way past their bedtime. However, this
was vacation time and no school and a time to have fun. The rest of the
guest all agreed.

"I am going to let you sleep in tomorrow, breakfast will be at 8:30. There
will be no wake up call since every room has an alarm clock. So good night,
we will see you in the morning." Dennis asked, "Hey, before you go, does
anyone have any food allergies?" No one spoke up and they all shook their
heads `no`. "Oh, one more thing, There are no street lights so would each
family pick up two flashlights on your way out. They will be in a box by
the door. See you in the morning and have a good night."

Kyle asked, "Dennis, I think I need a hot cocoa before I hit the sack. May
I fix you one?"

"Sure thing, Bud. Sounds good to me," Dennis replied. "Oh, Hi, Dad. I
didn't see you come in. Would you like to join us for some hot cocoa?"

"I wanted to have a little family meeting but we can do it while drink our
cocoa. Kyle, please feel welcome to join us." Dad said. "Not a problem,
but from the look on your face, I would say it is serious," commented Kyle.

"It is Kyle and I just don't know what to do."

"Dad, let me guess. All of this has something to with Kevin. Right?'

"Correct. First, let's go to the kitchen and fix our cocoa. Then we can
have our little discussion." Dad said. The three of them came back into
the living room and sat down on the couch. Jim was in the middle. The boys
made sure that they were close to Dad, so close that their bodies were
touching.

"Boys, I guess I shouldn't keep calling you that because you are both fine
young men. However, you will always be my little boys." said Dad.

"You are right, Dad. Kyle and I may have a man's body but we'll always be
your little boys inside," said Dennis with tears in his eyes. " I'll never
get too big for a hug. May I have one now?"

"I want one, too.!" Kyle said with tears rolling down his cheeks.

"Not a problem, because now I get two hugs and right now that's what I need
most in the world." Dad said with tears flowing. "As you both know, I have
been in counseling. Things are not getting any better. In fact, I have
resigned my teaching position, starting the firstof the year. I am
following the advice of my counselor. She also recommended that I leave
Coos Bay because there are just too many memories still there. I sold the
house and gave all the furniture away. I put the things I wanted to keep in
a small storage unit until such time as I can bear to get them. I am going
to Texas to visit my uncle and aunt and all my cousins who live there."

"Dad, why don't you just move in here with us? We have lots of room. Texas
is so far away," said Dennis and Kyle shook his head in agreement.

"Dennis, I'd love to but I have to get away from some of the memories that
I have. You, Kevin and I had a great life and lots of fun. I have nothing
but fond memories. I can never get over losing Kevin, if every time I look
at you, I remember what used to be. You have sweet Kyle here to devote all
your time, attention, and love. I'd still have no one. I'm afraid it would
bemore than I could handle."

Then Kyle spoke up, "Dennis, I know what your Dad is saying and I agree
with him. When my partner and I had that nasty split, I felt my world had
come to an end. I didn't want to go on living. I thought several times
about ending it all. Then I met you. I have never been happier in my whole
life. I think your dad is almost in the same place where I was. Jim, I say
go have some fun. That special someone is out there waiting for you to find
him or her." Both boys had their arms around Jim's shoulders. His tears
were really flowing now.

"Dad, I would never try to hold you back. Kyle is right. I want you to
remember that we are both here for you if you should ever need us. We're
just as close as the phone. Don't hesitate to call. We'll be on the next
plane headed to Texas. Love you, Dad," sobbed Dennis.

"Thanks, Boys! You two have done more for me in the last few minutes than
the counselor has done since Kevin's death. You know, this is the first
time I've acknowledged Kevin's death out loud. I have a feeling of peace
and a warm glow on the inside of me now. I know my healing will become a
lot easier," Jim said almost smiling.

"Dad, I know what will do you more good than visiting relatives. I'm going
in and get on the computer and book you a world wide cruise. Then you can
go visit the relatives."

"Dennis, I'm going to go in with you. I get all tingly inside just thinking
about it." Kyle said.

"It looks like I have absolutely no say in the matter but I would like to
go in with the two of you and throw out some of my ideas of where I want to
go," Jim said smiling. "I don't want a gay cruise either and Dennis, I'm
going to use my own money. You don't have a say in that matter.

"Then let's get off our duffs and do it," Dennis said.

"So Dad, what do you have in mind where you would like to go," asked Kyle?

"Hey, I like that. I've just increased my sons by 100% . I promise you that
I won't make the same mistakes as I did the first time. I will rule with an
iron fist."

"Don't pay him any mind. You can twist him around your finger and get
anything you want. I'm here to show you how to do it. He is a big sucker
for smooth talk and if that doesn't work, try some fake tears," laughed
Dennis. "Dad, let's get serious and get your trip planned. What did you
have in mind?"

"I have always wanted to travel to New Zealand and Australia, and after
that Japan," Jim responded.

"Hey, look at this trip. It's a slow boat to New Zealand. Look at all the
Islands the ship will visit before getting there. Of course you would want
to book a one way trip, so you can stay as long as you like touring New
Zealand and Australia, If you want to fork out that kind of money, then fly
to Japan for you next stop. After Japan, you can come home or find another
destination," Dennis said.

"Money is no problem. Kevin inherited a lot from his parents and
grandparents. He put it all in both of our names so that I would get it if
something should happen to him and I did the same. He did not want to trust
the courts handling his estate. Gays have problems sometimes. Dennis, he
wanted you to have half of his money and you already have gone through his
things and took what you wanted."

"The money that he wanted in the scholarship fund is different from this
money. This money came from his own money and he had a good broker. He made
a lot of money. I did the same and I want my money used in the same way. I
have it in my will already. One half of Kevin's inheritance is mine and
some day it will be yours along with mine.. You will get your half of
Kevin`s estate now."

"You know, Dad, I think we should just look at what is out there and
dream. Then we can go into Bend and get travel agent to do all the
booking. By the way, have you kept your passport up to date?" Asked Dennis.

"Yes, worry wart, I have. I can see why I did. I almost let it lapse but
Kevin kept nagging and I finally gave in," Jim said. "I like the idea of
going to a travel agency. We'd probably blotch everything and I would find
myself stranding on some deserted island with the biggest, ugliest monster
in the whole world and one who didn`t like sex," chuckled Jim.
