Jason Chapter 3

Jason sat quietly for a good part of the way back to the Sault. Austin
left him to his thoughts. He figured the boy needed to think things out.
For that matter he had his own thoughts that he needed to sort out

Finally after about three quarters of an hour as they were driving through
the Garden River Reserve, Jason asked "Your folks want to meet me?"

"Yeah!" Said Austin laughing. "They have always wanted a grandchild"

Jason's brow furrowed... "They don't have any grandchildren?"

"No, I'm their only child and I never married." Austin suddenly realized
that he had strayed on what could be difficult territory. How would Jason
respond if he told him he was gay himself. He hadn't even thought of it
through all this. How would the Children's Aid respond?

Jason sat quiet for a while longer.

Austin's mind was churning, had he made a great error in taking this kid
in. He wanted to help this boy, he felt for him because of what had
happened to him, but he was gay for shit's sake, what could he be thinking
and what would happen if Jase or the CAS found out. Would Jase think that
he was just out to rape like Mike and Gerry had?

There were just coming onto town when he spoke again. "Why didn't you get
married Austin?"

"Oh I don't know, just never wanted to."

"Oh, I don't think that I'll ever get married either"

"Why not? You'll find some great girl and fall in love and marry her"
Austin said

"I don't think so Austin" replied Jason.

Austin thought about pursuing the subject further but they were close to
his folks place so nothing more was said. Moments later they pulled into
the driveway.

They were still undoing their seatbelts when Austin's Mother was at Jason's
door and his father was out on the porch. Jason was startled as the door
was pulled open. "Come on out here! Austin who is this boy? Come on in"

Everything came out rapid fire as Jason found himself being ushered in to
the house with a motherly arm around his shoulders. The house was warm and
he was led right into the kitchen which smelled of a mixture of something
roasting in the oven and something sweetish. A large cake cooling on the
counter told him what that was.

Behind him he heard Austin and then Austin's father. "Your mother put a
cake in the oven as soon as she hung up and the roast was ready for the
oven as soon as the cake came out.

"Your name is Jason I hear", the man said to Jason.

Jason nodded and then was surprised when the man took him into his arms.
"Well welcome home son"

Sit down son I hope you like hot cake, I didn't have time to ice it but
Austin always liked this cake un-iced didn't you Austin?"

Jason was directed to a chair at the kitchen table and found himself the
recipient of a large piece of whitish cake and a mug of hot chocolate.

Austin grinned at him... "It's my favourite cake, Mum's vanilla plain cake"
he said and then added "I told you that they wanted to meet you"

"You just make yourself at home. Austin is your guardian that makes you
our grandson" another hug from who was soon to be called Gramma.

They were soon all chatting happily and eating cake and drinking hot
chocolate.

After about an hour Austin's Mum said "Supper is going to be a while yet
and Austin, you have to go get Jase some more clothes and settled in. And
don't be going to some cheap place, get him some descent stuff." She
nodded at the older Mr Miller who pulled out his wallet and counted out
another $100.

"Mum!! Dad!!! You don't have to do this. They gave me money to buy Jase
clothes" Austin protested

Jason just sat back not believing what he was witnessing.

"Well it's a pretty sad day if we can't get a little something for our
grandson" Mum answered

Jason bowed his head overwhelmed by it all. "No one has ever done anything
like this for me" he whispered more to himself than anyone but it was not
missed by Mrs. Miller. She got up from her chair and crouched down beside
Jason. "Son, Austin told us only a little of what has happened to you,
that will never happen to you again as long as I have a say in the matter.
We just want you to know that we want to be your grandparents, and we are
going to be the best grandparents we can be. Now you two get going.
Supper is at six. Roast beef and all the fixins."

Jason threw his arms around her and hugged her close. "Thank you"

Mrs Miller knew it was a heartfelt thanks and loved the boy all the more.

Minutes later Austin and Jason were in the car heading for the Station
Mall.

"Your folks really mean it don't they?" Jason asked as they drove away
form the house

"What?"

"Your Mum said they want to be my grandparents"

"Yeah "Austin laughed "Mum doesn't hide her feelings well. But she meant
every word, and so did Dad"

"I never had grandparents that wanted me" Jason said simply "I think your
folks are great"

Austin didn't answer the boy; his heart went out to him. He resolved that
one way or another his mum and dad would have an active role in the boys
life. He would fight for this kid, even if Children's Aid didn't support
him he would see to it that the connection that had so recently been made
remained strong. He wanted to make sure that this connection would
continue long after his eighteenth birthday.

Arriving at the mall they spent a very enjoyable hour finding clothes for
Jason. They laughed and joked and just enjoyed themselves. They didn't get
everything they wanted but did get a few items before they had to go back
"home" as Jason put it for supper.

Austin could see his mother beaming as they came laughing into the house.
Jason excitedly showed them his purchases. "We have to go back to get some
other stuff because we ran out of time, but this is so Awesome" He hugged
Austin's mother and then his dad "Thank you so much"

Austin's mother said "Well that's just fine son, now I just have to finish
setting the table and we can eat" she walked toward the kitchen.

Jason followed her, "can I help?" He asked

Austin looked at his dad, "You guys are a hit, thanks dad, he told me in
the car as we went to the mall that he thinks you are great, and then he
told me just before he headed back that he needed to hurry "home" dad; that
supper would be waiting"

"He seems like a very nice kid Austin. I hope we can help him"

As they were talking they heard Jason's voice in the kitchen "Gramma" (It
was kind of shyly said) "Where is the cutlery?"

The hearts of three adults in that house all jumped at the same time and
eyes misted over as they heard "grammar"

Austin heard his mother's voice crack as she told Jason where to find the
cutlery. When he walked in to the dining room his mother was smiling from
ear to ear with tears streaking down her face. "Yeah" he thought "Jason
would be fine here. He needed them and they needed him"

It was during supper that night that while it was by all accounts if you
were to ask Jason a very happy affair. More tears were shed as he told
them a little of what his life had been like with his dad. He told them
how his mother and therefore her family had deserted him. His paternal
grandparents had made it clear that they wanted nothing to do with him
either.

"Well son, you have grandparents here that will always want you regardless
what happens with Children's Aid tomorrow" said Austin's Dad.

Jason seemed to make himself right at home that even often calling on one
or the other of Austin's parents as either Gramma or Grandpa to their
delight.

Jason a bit overwhelmed by the welcome he had gotten had decided to take
the chance and see what would happen when he called Austin's Mum "Gramma"
if he was rebuffed at least he knew where he stood and would be more
careful. So he had tried with Austin's mother first alone in the kitchen
first to see what the response would be. With Austin's mother not
rejecting him at all he figured he could be as comfortable with Austin's
dad as well. Inside he felt as happy as he had ever felt in his entire
life. In the back of his mind he figured it would have to end at some
point but right now he just felt so great he was having trouble to not
burst into tears.

When Austin's mother got up to start clearing away the table Jason got up
too and started gathering plates.

"My dear you let me do this. You sit with Austin and Dad." She said
gently

"No I can help Gramma"

"Well I know you can and I really appreciate it" she said giving him a hug,
"but actually you and Austin have to go get the rest of your stuff and get
you settled in at your new home, you can help me the next time you come
here."

Austin got up from his chair. "Yeah that's right we do have to get going I
want to get the rest of your stuff tonight."

"Ok' said Jason looking a little down "I just think I should be cleaning up
after this great meal you made, I shouldn't leave you with all this mess"

"You're a find lad Jason, there will be many many times more that you can
help and I will let you help me. She laughed. "Heaven knows those other
two lugs aren't going to pitch in"

They all laughed and Austin and Jason took their leave after hugs and
kisses all around. If Jason had any doubt that these people were sincere
in their love and caring he left the house and the doubt behind. Austin's
dad slipped him another twenty dollars to "Get something special for
yourself son" he whispered as he did so.

It wasn't missed by Austin but he chose not to say anything. Jason blushed
and tried to refuse but "Grampa" would not allow it. So Jason hugged him
and thanked him.

In the car later he tried to give the money to Austin but he merely
said. "Dad wants you to have it Jason"

"Why are they being so good to me Austin?"

"That's the way my folks are Jase, they have taken to you and they want you
to know that they love you."

They chatted as they went, spending the rest of the money getting Jason
what he needed. Then they went "home" to Austin's apartment.

Jason was talking about Austin's parents and calling them Gramma and
Grampa, when he paused and then asked the question that he had asked
earlier that day. "So why didn't you get married Austin?"

Austin tried at first to laugh it off saying "No one would have me"

"Yeah right, come on you're a good looking man I'm sure that you probably
have all kinds of girls after you"

Austin suddenly felt uncomfortable. "I just never wanted to I guess"

He turned the question back to Jason, "You said earlier that you probably
wouldn't either, you too are a good looking dude, you must have a girl
friend."

Jason blushed and bowed his head. Taking a deep breath he said very quietly
"I think I am gay" He winced as he said that, expecting to get a punch of
slap or something... "I guess you can let me off at the corner and I'll go"
he muttered

"Go where? We're going home Jase"

"Didn't you hear me? I said I was gay!"

"Well actually you said you think you are gay, but that really doesn't make
any difference... if you are thinking that way you probably already know
you are. But we are still going home "

Just about that time they arrived at the apartment complex where Austin
lived. Austin pulled into the parking lot and parked the car. When he
turned off the ignition he turned to Jason who was still sitting with his
head bowed. "Look at me Jason, I'm going to tell you something" Jason
looked up at the man "I have been trying to think of a way to tell you this
without scaring you ... Jason I'm gay too."

There was silence. Austin could see the words sinking in. He wanted to
take the boy into his arms and hold him but he restrained himself. "Jason"
he said softly. "I'm not a Mike or a Gerry. What they did has nothing to
do with being gay or straight, what they did was rape. I am not going to
hurt you or come on to you or make you do anything that you don't want to
do. I just want to take care of you and give you a home where you will be
safe."

Jason looked into his eyes as if he was trying to read what was inside.
"Do... Do your folks know" he asked

Austin nodded

Jason touched the bruise on his cheek. Austin could see it still stung
because Jason winced. "Did your father hit you when he found out?"

"No, we talked about it and the he hugged me and told me that he loved me"

"My father told me that he was going to kill me." He started to sob softly

There was a heavy palpable silence as both men thought about that

"No one is going to hurt you again Jase... not if I can help it"

"I wish I had folks like yours" Jason wiped the tears that were streaming
down his face

"You now do Jase, My mum and dad will love you the way you should be
loved." Austin gently took hold of Jason's arm. They sat quiet for about
a minute. "Now c'mon lets get into the apartment or Mum will be calling to
see if we're ok."

Jason smiled at that. He just couldn't understand why these people were
being so kind to him. It was obvious that certainly Austin's folks were
sincere but why? They didn't even know him. And what about Austin? He
said he was gay too, does that mean he is going to want something from him?

Jason helped Austin with the numerous shopping bags as well as Austin's
suitcase. It was a struggle but as Austin said they didn't want to have to
make two trips. They could hear the phone ringing as Austin put the key in
the lock. "Mum... we stayed out too long" he laughed

He ran in to the phone and got it just as his mother started leaving a
message. "I'm here Mum" he said as he lifted the phone.

"Your father and I were wondering if you need anything in the way of
furniture for Jason's room. You know we still have some of your stuff
here"

"We can look at that Mum but there is a bed and a dresser and a closet for
now... he can have one of my side tables. We should be alright for tonight
anyway."

"Well let us know if you need anything ... tell Jason we love him "

OK Mum, g'night... kiss Dad for me"

Austin hung up and turned around. Jason was standing on the threshold of
the door, as though not daring to come in.

Austin decided not to make a fuss of it and merely said "C'mon in and make
yourself at home Jase. Oh and Mum said to say they love you." The boy
moved in just enough to be able to close the door

"Ok bring your bags in here." Austin said walking down the hall toward the
room that was to be Jason's. "We got a bit of work to do to clean my junk
out but tonight we'll just clear off the bed and put some fresh sheets on
and then get your stuff, unpacked. We'll have to do a couple loads of
laundry ... new clothes should always be washed once before you wear them."

For the next half hour Austin busied himself cleaning out space for Jason
while Jason unbagged his new clothes. They actually chatted and laughed.
Jason could feel the worry draining from him the more they talked. Just
the way this man was talking to him he could feel that he was safe.

With the room pretty much cleared of Austin's stuff, the men arranged a
couple piles of clothes, shirts and tops, a pair of dress pants in one and
jeans in the other

"OK" Austin said putting the clothes in to a laundry basket. "I'm going to
go down and get this started, why don't you relax and explore your new
digs. This is your home now, so you might as well check it out. I'll be
backing about five minutes."

With that he walked out of the apartment, leaving Jason standing in his
room.

Jason walked back out to the door and looked about him. There was a living
room/dining room arrangement and a small kitchen. Walking back down the
hall he saw the bathroom, not huge but big enough. His room and what he
assumed was Austin's room were next to each other at the end of the hall.
He looked into Austin's room, not going in. The one thing that caught his
attention was a large photograph of two naked men in embrace kissing. It
was beautiful. Jason could feel his body respond to the image. He stared
at it for some time before he headed back down the hall. He just sat down
on the chesterfield in the living room when Austin walked back in.

"There I'm back. I have to go down in about twenty minutes to put the
stuff in the dryer then, you'll have something to wear tomorrow."

Austin grabbed one of the dining room chairs turned it around and sat. "So
you think you can handle living here for a while?" He grinned at Jason.

"Yeah" said Jason suddenly feeling shy and uncomfortable

"Listen Jase, this is your home now, pending the children's Aid of course
but that shouldn't be a problem... At any rate this is your home, I want
you to feel like it is your home OK?"

"Ok"

Austin realized that this would take a bit of time. The boy was obviously
uncomfortable for some reason. He turned on the Television... "Want to
watch some TV?" He asked.

They sat quietly for a bit watching some police show. "I really like the
picture in your bedroom." Jason suddenly blurted out. As soon as he said
it, he blushed a deep red. "I uh... I saw it from the door" he stammered

Austin laughed in spite of himself. "That's ok man; I really like that one
too. I have another one on the other wall did you see it?"

Jason shook his head.

"Would you like to? C'mon" Austin got up and went down the hall toward the
bedroom. He looked back as he reached his room to see if Jason was
following.

They walked into the room. On the wall that Jason could not have seen from
the door there was a large photo again but this time of two men clearly
engaged in anal sex. It was a black and white, an amazing play of shadows
and light. "Wow that's beautiful" breathed Jason

"Isn't it something? Mum doesn't like it much. I was going to hang it in
the living room at first but she put her foot down on that. So I hung it
here, but it is such a beautiful shot"

"Yeah it is but I can see how Gramma wouldn't want to see it in the living
room" Jason chuckled softly.

Austin smiled at the boy. He seemed to be coming out of whatever he had
gone into moments before. He put an arm over Jason's shoulder "Well I
better go down and change the laundry, before someone dumps it on the
floor, you ok for a couple minutes?"

Jason felt the arm on his shoulder, and flinched a bit but he didn't move.
"I'm ok Austin..." he said and then added almost inaudibly "don't be long"

"I won't son, just a couple minutes; you can come with me if you like"

"No I'll be ok"

Ok then be right back..." Austin left Jason standing in his room, still
looking at the picture. Jason was afraid to move with Austin there because
he found that when he saw the picture he got completely aroused.

Jason looked at the pictures for a couple minutes more before he headed
back to the living room. Austin found him there when he returned.

Austin sat down and they watched TV for a bit not saying much other than
making comment now and then about the program, and that was usually at
Austin's instigation. Some time later coming up with the last basket of
laundry Austin said "well bud how about we get to bed, I'm exhausted"

"Yeah me too" Jason took the basket from Austin and walked to his room
ahead of Austin. His heart was pounding. What if Austin came into his
room with him and forced himself on him... Was he going to expect sex from
him? In his heart he knew these questions were probably not valid but fear
seemed to reign in his mind. He didn't dare look back as he went into his
room. He heard Austin stop at the door.

"Ok" he heard the man say "You're ok here then?"

Jason looked over at Austin and nodded

"Great, I'll see you in the morning then. We should probably be out of
here by 8:30 our appointment is at 9. So we should probably get up by 7.
If you want to shower you know where the bathroom is... there are towels in
the cabinet. Use whatever you need. I always shower in the
morning... whatever works for you... G'night"

G'night" Jason said softly as he watched Austin move off and heard him go
into the bathroom. There was the usual sounds of the man taking a leak,
the toilet flushing, the tap running and what sounded like Austin brushing
his teeth. Then a couple minutes later the door opened again "The bathroom
is yours if you want it." Jason heard him call.

"OK" Jason's fear had subsided somewhat. Maybe just maybe Austin wasn't
going to take advantage of him. Maybe just maybe what he had witnessed
with "Gramma" and "Grampa" and Austin was legit. He wished he could trust.
Jason sighed and went to the bathroom and did what he needed. Moments
later with his door closed he undressed, turned out the light and got into
bed. He lay there for a long time listening to the sounds of the apartment
building and the street noises that were coming through the window. The
last time he looked at the clock on the night table it was just after 1:00
AM

Austin knew that Jason was not sure of what was going to happen to him. He
wished he could just convince him that he was safe. But he knew it would
take time and he would have to convince the boy not with words but with
actions. He slowly drifted off to sleep
