Chapter 39

JW and Marcus showered together and walked into kitchen only wearing their
gym shorts. Marcus cooked two large steaks, two potatoes and large bowl of
green beans. While Marcus cooked JW explained his plans to spend time with
the girls and Marcus completely agreed and thought it was a great idea. As
they sat down to eat it was almost five in the morning. Marcus looked from
JW and saw Leah standing at the entrance to the kitchen, "Leah what are you
doing up? It's 5:45am."

Leah rubbed her eyes and walked into the kitchen, sat next to JW and
slouched in her chair, "Smelled the yummy food and woke up."

JW looked to Marcus, "Well there is some left on my plate, you want that or
do you want me to cook you a steak?"

Leah nodded her head, "Can you make my own?"

JW grinned, stood up with his plate and walked over to the oven. JW turned
the gas on to the grill, took a bite of his food and walked over to the
fridge and grabbed food for Leah and Kira. JW cooked two small steaks and
some corn and green beans. JW finished eating as the steaks finished
cooking. JW slid the plate in front of Leah and she started to eat, JW went
to Kira and woke her up. Leah had almost finished her plate and was talking
with Marcus as JW carried Kira out of her room and put her in a chair. Kira
looked around the table, "It's not dinner time! Why is there dinner food?"

JW sat down laughing, "It's ok baby, eat up while it's hot!"

Kira picked up the fork reluctantly and started to eat, after the first
bite she was not holding back any more. They sat around the table talking
until it was time for JW to leave for work. JW went to the bedroom changed
into his work clothes and walked into the kitchen. JW kissed the girls good
bye and walked over to Marcus, "Well the kids are yours, thanks again."
Marcus kissed JW and JW turned and walked to the garage.

Marcus made the girls lunches whiles they got dressed. By the time the
girls had packed there backpacks and Marcus got them into the car and
backed out of the drive way Leah said, "What about Luke?"

Marcus looked at her, "I completely forgot about him!" Marcus pulled back
into the garage and ran inside as the girls giggled. Marcus rushed in,
scoped up Luke who was not ready to be jerked out of bed started to cry
lightly. Ten minutes passed and Marcus sped down the road towards Kira's
school. Marcus dropped Kira off and barely got Leah to school on time. Leah
bounced out of the car, waved good bye and Marcus drove back home.

Marcus adjusted the rear view mirror to look at Luke who was fast sleep
again. Marcus pulled into the garage and waited for the garage door to
close before he opened the car doors to get Luke. Marcus had just gotten
Luke back into bed when his phone dinged loudly from a text message, Luke
woke up again and started to crawl around, Marcus knew Luke was not going
back to sleep. Marcus climbed into bed with Luke who crawled on top of him
and started to laugh. The cell phone dinged again and Marcus looked at it,
JW had sent him a picture of a subway breakfast sandwich with the caption
'so hungry!' Marcus put the phone down and played with Luke.

Marcus had spent days trying to get Luke to say his name, but Luke kept
calling him dad or dada two. Marcus cheered every time Luke did this but
knew that a small part of JW would not like this. Marcus had done some
reading and found that ignoring Luke call him dad and not responding to it
might help. Suddenly as Marcus was falling asleep he herd Luke chirp,
"Marc."

Marcus looked at Luke as he tried to crawl off the bed on the new ramp JW
made; Luke fell about half way down with a thud. Marcus shot up in bed and
looked at Luke who was laughing, again Luke said, "Marc," and pointed out
the door. Luke started to wobble off and towards the bathroom. Marcus
watched Luke disappear and he laid back down in bed and thought to himself
that this could not be any more perfect. A few minutes later Luke
reappeared completely naked and said his name again and then disappeared
from the door way this time towards the living room. Marcus chased Luke
down with some clothes; Marcus took Luke into the kitchen for breakfast.

JW arrived at the station visited for a few minutes while eating his second
breakfast. After eating JW hit the fire trucks to do his normal shift
work. For some reason the rest of the crew came out and helped him with the
work, what should have taken several hours only took forty five minutes. JW
heard Shane say as they finished, "Alright looks we are on down time today,
no other training and the engines are done. Watch tv or sleep I don't
care." JW followed everyone else up stairs and took his new-welcomed place
in the broken recliner that hurts your back if you lay in for any amount of
time. JW fell sleep almost immediately.

JW's Captain shaking his arm waked him up, he shot out of the chair and
tripped over himself almost falling to the ground, JW rushed for the door
and jerked it open. JW realized that he was not woken up because of a call;
he looked around the room stupidly as everyone else stared at him. One of
the drivers said, "God damn! Good to know he will get up and go!"

The Captain Shane started to laugh, "Just making sure your ok. You have
been asleep all day."

JW furrowed his eyebrow, " All day?" JW looked at his phone and saw that it
was only 9:45, "I have been asleep only about an hour." Everyone started to
laugh and Shane shook his head, "God damn are you on drugs!"

JW said reluctantly, "What? No why? What the hell is going on?"

Shane walked to JW, "Son it's almost ten o'clock at night. You just slept
twelve hours! And no you didn't miss any calls, I was just checking on
you."

Someone yelled, "Bullshit you just though he was dead!"

JW shook his head and apologized, "So can I go back to sleep?"

Shane shook his head, "No since your up I wanted to talk to you. So meet me
down stairs in a few minutes. JW took a minute to clear his head, and the
walked down stairs to meet with his Captain.

JW walked out of the Captains off and took a huge sigh of relief. He
thought he was in trouble but Shane asked general family questions and how
is everything going. They talked for almost five hours and before JW had
left, Shane asked if JW would join him in a few weeks for a BBQ at his
house?

JW agreed and left Shane to finish his paper work. JW didn't want to walk
up stairs and wake anyone else up, even though he could easily go back to
sleep. JW grabbed a chair at the table in the truck bays, grabbed an
advanced firefighting book and started to read. It was five in the morning
when JW herd a door open and someone walking down the stairs, JW looked
over his shoulder and saw Bill, and JW went back to reading his book.

JW thought to himself why doesn't Bill just retire, he has been here over
thirty years. Bill was from the old school of fire fighting and could
easily be considered a relic. JW was certain that Bill hated him before he
was out and knew that Bill was never friendly with him. Bill sat down
across from him and asked, "How long you been down here reading?"

JW shrugged, "Not to long, probably an hour." JW put the book down and
looked at Bill, "Need me to do anything?"

Bill laughed and stretched his hands into the air, "Well since your
offering a pot of coffee would be amazing. JW turned and made the coffee in
silence.

JW returned with a paper cup and gave it to Bill who said thank you. JW sat
there in an uncomfortable silence while Bill sipped the black coffee. Bill
leaned back in his chair, "You played college ball didn't you?"

JW was shocked, he never told anyone that he played baseball in college, he
was embarrassed that he had an arm injury and had to quit after his junior
season, "Yes sir, I played but not for long, I tore my bicep on my throwing
arm and never recovered from it."

Bill nodded his head, "Thought so, I watch and pay attention to all the
college teams in the state. Damn shame that happened, you were damn good."
JW was shocked, not even his own father ever gave him that big of a
complement.

Bill hit JW again with a blunt question, "So why are you gay?"

JW was nervous answering the question but managed to tell Bill a simple
enough explanation that he seemed satisfied with. JW talked with Bill as
others woke up one after another and joined them at the table. By the end
of the shift the whole crew had gathered and were talking loudly, JW had
slipped off the radar again and was sitting quietly watching everyone. The
shift ended with zero calls for the day. JW climbed into his car and drove
towards home with plans to crawl into bed.
