Moving Forward - chapter 11

"Try and walk over to Adam" Doctor Anderson told Luke as he swung his legs
off the bed. I had just watched the Doc giving Luke another full body

The meal was now ready so I told the other two to get Luke and sit down at

"I now pronounce you Civil Partners" the Registrar said and then added

down and kissed him again. The two witnesses were then called and we all
signed the official Register. Luke had asked Charles to sign for him and I

and said he'd be delighted.

Once all the formal ceremony was over the photographer got us all lined up

it before the next person was coming to give their congratulations.

standing with Frank to one side so I beckoned them over.

"Hi Luke, congratulations to both of you and I wish you every happiness

"Guys" Jason was now saying, "Time to go through to the reception room".

going to remain in the wheelchair for his wedding reception. I didn't blame

Sam and her husband along with other members of the company. On the table

looked across. Further back I saw Jay and Matt who had said he would come
to the formal part but would not come to the party because he wanted to get
back home to be with his Mum and Dad.

The main course was duck and it too was very delicious. This was followed
by a fruit dessert and cheese and biscuits for those who wanted it and
coffee.



I was suddenly aware of Jason calling everyone to attention. He said a few
amusing words about his cousin Luke and said he'd not really got to know me
that well yet but from what he'd seen so far was sure Luke was not going to

see are now Civil Partners. I on behalf of everyone here Luke and Adam wish
you both a very long and happy life together even though we know life is
not going to be easy for either of you. I only wish your mother and father
could have been here today to see this because I know without doubt that
they would have both been very happy for you.

So will everyone be upstanding for Luke and Adam."

By now tears were falling down my face and when I looked at Luke I saw that
he too had tears. We held each other's hands and squeezed them as if
somehow it would make all that had happened to him go away.

I was then aware that Jason had introduced Frank. He stood and put his hand
on my shoulder.

"Like Charles who saw Luke grow up, I had the pleasure of watching Adam
grow up from the time he was born. I should explain that I am Adam's uncle
and his mother here is my sister. I'm sure Adam won't mind me telling you
that he had a difficult life at home because his father would not accept
his sexuality and to this day does still not do so despite knowing that he
has met the man of his dreams. Hence the reason why I am standing here
rather than his father but I am pleased to say that his Mum is very proud
of her son and always has been. She has every right to be since as you know

They have both told me that it was love at first sight and I can believe
that since I can see they are both madly in love with each other. As
Charles has so rightly pointed out their future is not going to be easy for

The whole room was roaring with laughter at this stage and I smiled at Luke
who had tears rolling down his face. I squeezed his hand again as Frank
continued.

"I too would like to wish them both a long and happy life together so let's
have another toast to Adam and Luke".

"Adam and Luke" everyone roared as they stood with their glasses high in
the air.

"Speech, speech" someone was calling out from the back.

Luke and I had talked about one of us giving a short speech but nothing had
actually been decided. Jason looked at me and I nodded.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Adam"

Everyone clapped and cheered as I got up. I put my hand on Luke's shoulder
as I spoke.

"Well, how do you follow two speeches like that? Both Luke and I are in
tears and from what I have heard about his parents I am deeply sorry that I
never knew them. What I can say, is if they are anything like their son
then they must have been very special people.

Luke and I have often talked about this and we have both agreed that you
have to take life as it comes. If it hadn't been for that fateful day I may
never have met the love of my life."

The room erupted again into applause and I noticed several people were

for joining us today for this very special occasion. We hope you will

Everyone settled down to chatting and drinking more wine and eventually
Jason made an announcement to say that the cake was about to be cut by Luke
and me. We had only had a quick look at it before we came into the
reception but it looked wonderful. Juan had made it and he and Ryan had
given it to us as their wedding present. It consisted of two levels with a

You will also find food and drink in the kitchen so help yourself whenever
