Chapter 10

Lyle woke first very early the next morning. The sun was not yet
up but the birds were starting to sing. Gord was sprawled out
with one arm over Lyle's chest. As Lyle stirred Gord rolled and
curled up on his side. Lyle spooned in behind him and pulled him
close, kissing his back. Gord moaned softly and mumbled
something incoherent and went back to sleep, as did Lyle.

It was well after sun up when they woke again. They kissed and
held each other for several moments before Lyle fought his way
out of the bed to go to the outdoor toilet to relieve himself.
He was closely followed by Gord.

Back in the cottage they once again stood holding each other.
"Love you so much Gord" whispered Lyle into his young friends'
ear.

"and I you Lyle" replied Gord.

They got some breakfast together and then decided to go for a
hike, to a nearby lake. Thus began a week that neither of them
would ever forget. The days were spent hiking and swimming and
just enjoying the sun. They rowed many times around the lake.
They even caught enough sunfish one day for supper.

Their evenings were spent cementing their deepening love for each
other. Neither man found that he was either a top of bottom and
shared the joys of both. Gord thought he had risen to the
ethereal heights the first night he sank is rod deep into Lyle's
bowels. That night he also received Lyle the same way. They
were inseparable. They walked to the corner store about 4 miles
back to town one day, holding hands as they went. Gord had never
been happier in his life. He was in love, he was in love with a
beautiful man. He was in love with a man that loved him just as
intensely, with the same fervour.

The week flew by. The two young men were so intent in each other
they didn't notice anything or anyone else.

On Thursday night they went to bed early. As Gord's parents were
to be coming up the next day they wanted to have the most of
their last night alone together. They slowly undressed each
other, caressing and kissing and holding as they went. At one
point Gord threw his arms around Lyle and rested his head on the
man's chest. They stood like that for several minutes. Lyle
suddenly realised that Gord was crying.

"What is wrong Gord?" he gently enveloped Gord's face in his
hands and looked into his eyes.

"af... after tonight it will be all over Lyle" Gord was now
sobbing "N.. n. next week you will be gone"

Lyle was now weeping as well. "Gord . listen man. I'm not gone
yet. Tonight we have and I'm not going home until Sunday. We
won't be able to do what we've been doing this week as freely as
we have but we will still be together until then. Let's just
enjoy what we have left ok?" He lean forward and their lips met.
They kissed for several minutes just standing there.

Lyle led Gord to the bed and knelt before him. He unbuckled
Gord's belt and then the clasp of his jeans, and slowly lowered
them. As the jeans came down Gord's cock now achingly hard
sprang out. (neither boy had been wearing underwear all week)
Lyle licked his lips and allowed the young hard member slide into
his mouth, as Gord stepped out of his pants.

Lyle reluctantly released the cock and stood up, quickly removing
his own pants. They got into bed together. What followed was a
passion for each other, an unbridled love, that expressed the
intensity of their mutual feelings about this last moment
together. Two lithe bodies writhing in the heat of their love.

The intensity of their lust or their love making erased all
awareness of anything else. Lyle mounted his young lover and
slid into him. Gord was moaning in and agony of ecstacy. Lyle
was pumping wildly his body arched back his eyes shut, his face
pointing to the ceiling as he groaned out his love into Gord's
body.

"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN HERE?!?!?!?"

It wasn't until Gord's eldest brother screamed again and grabbed
Lyle from behind that both young men realised that they were not
alone! Lyle was dripping great streams of cum as he was hauled
off Gord. The next thing he knew he was on the floor trying to
avoid fists. He heard shouting and then he saw in the half
darkness Gord trying to tackle a man that had straddled him on
the floor.

Unknown to Gord and Lyle, Gord's dad had decided to make the
weekend a bit of a work weekend. So Gord's eldest brother said
he would go up early and get the materials so that when the rest
arrived on Friday night everything would be in order and ready to
go.

As he came up the path the to cottage he heard some strange
noises coming from inside. He walked in and followed the sounds
to the their source. It was not quite dark yet and what he saw
was the glistening naked body of a black man pumping in an action
that Bill recognised immediately. What shocked him was seeing
his youngest brother being the recipient of the action. He was
both sickened and infuriated by what he saw. He went into a rage
screaming out and grabbed the black man, pulling him off his
brother.

Gord was in the throes of pure ecstacy when he thought he heard
something and realised that Lyle was leaving his body. Then he
saw his brother throw his lover across the room and attack him.
It took several seconds to realise what had happened. He shouted
at his brother who was now on top of Lyle and punching. Gord
flung himself on his brother shouting for him to stop.

Gord put himself between Bill and Lyle. "Bill!" he shouted
"What are you doing?"

Bill jumped up and ran out of the room cursing. "You fuckin'
perverts!! Is that what you have been doing all week? You make
me sick"

He came back to the room. Gord and Lyle were dressing. Looking
at Lyle with nothing less that pure loathing he shouted. "YOU!
Get the hell out of here before I kill you"

Again Gord put himself between the two men. "Bill he is not
going! He is my guest and he is staying"

"We'll see what Mum and Dad say about that when they come up
tomorrow."

He stormed out of the room again. The boys could hear him
cursing and raging in the other room. Gord was crying. Lyle
fully dressed now came over to him and hugged him

Bill stormed back into the room. "I told you to get out of
here!! Get the fuck away from my brother!!"

Lyle backed off, but didn't say anything, Gord moved himself
between his brother and his lover. Lyle started to gather his
things and stuff them into his bag. Gord did the same.

"What do you think you're doing?" cried Bill at him.

"You think I'm going to let Lyle go alone. I love him Bill and
if he goes so do I"

"you are staying here" Bill raged "I can't believe what you
were doing" he spat out with disgust.

"Oh like you are so innocent and pure" shouted Gord at him. "You
think that Mum would be happy to know what you are doing with
Anne and Bev and whoever else?"

"At least it isn't perverted" said Bill in a low voice.

"three or four girls at a time isn't perverted? Give me a
break!" shouted Gord. He was angry as well as frightened now.
Tears were streaming down his face.

Lyle stepped in at this point. Bill made to push him away.

"Bill" he said actually quite softly. "I'm guessing you probably
don't understand this, but I love your brother, he is a wonderful
young man. He is brave and kind and considerate. He dared to
give up his seat to two coloured folk on the bus in the states
and didn't back down when the bus driver took him on. He treated
my aunt and uncle like his own aunt and uncle. He dared to walk
in the march with Dr King. Sir, to me he is a hero"

Lyle paused. Bill stared at himself and didn't seem to have
anything to say.

"Sir" Lyle continued " When we were down at my aunt and uncles'
we discovered that there was a connection between us. You might
not agree with it but it happened and it has grown. I love your
brother and I know he loves me. I will go but you have to know
that we will always love each other."

There was silence. The only movement was Gord moving to Lyle,
his eyes never leaving his brother. Bill stood there silently
obviously trying to come to terms with what his brother was
doing, and what this black man had just said to him. He prided
himself with not being racist. But this, how did he deal with
this. Was it because the man was black that he felt such
revulsion? Was it because it was his brother and another man, or
was it both?

As they all stood there in silence Bill's mind roiled around. He
had experimented himself with one of the orderlies when he worked
in the hospital. He decided it was not for him, but this. this.
his own brother, his own brother telling him not only was this
an experiment but he wanted it, he loved this man! How could he
deal with this ?

Gord pulled Lyle to him. "Lyle is staying here as planned Bill
and you are not going to say anything to Mum or Dad. I will tell
them in my own way and time. I'm sorry if I have shocked you but
I love Lyle and he loves me, and that's that."

Gord turned to Lyle and led him out to the living room of the
cottage, leaving Bill standing alone. In the other room he
heard the sound of his young brother putting on the kettle for
tea. He could hear the two talking in low tones.

A moment later Gord came back to the room. "I've put on the
kettle for tea, do you want anything to eat? I could put some
macaroni dinner on with some hotdogs if you like.

"yeah . yeah that would be good Gord" said Bill quietly.

Gord left again and Bill soon heard the sound of water being
poured into a pot and the sounds of food being prepared. He made
a decision and sighed deeply, then he went out to the main room
where Gord and Lyle were.

He coughed slightly "Ok" he started "I probably over reacted
but you have to admit that you didn't to see what I did" Bill
could feel his upper lip start to twist up in a smile. "I don't
like the thought of you being gay Gord, but I guess it is a
little late for that."

Gord walked over to his brother, "Bill you don't have to like it,
I'm the one that has to deal with it. I would prefer to have
your support though"

Bill nodded, "I won't say anything to Mum and Dad."

Gord gave his brother a hug. "Thanks Bill"

The three men sat down together and ate in silence. Lyle would
glance at Bill every now and then trying to read his expression.
There was nothing there that he could read. Occasionally their
eyes would meet only to look away quickly. Gord was watching
both men.

It was late when they were done and had cleaned the dishes and
pots and everything up.

"I'm going to get a pail of water from the lake for the morning,
and then I think we're going to bed Bill, I guess you're sleeping
in the other room?" Gord walked over to Lyle and together they
left with a couple pails down to the lake. Bill stared after
them, sighed, got up and went to his room.

With only the beam of a flash light to guide them the two young
men made their way down to the lake. They filled their pails.
Gord set his pail down and Lyle did the same. They took each
other into a tight embrace, kissing deeply. "I'm so sorry that
this happened Lyle" Gord whispered in Lyle's ear.

"I think we shocked him that's all. Lyle started laugh quietly
"I don't think he expected to see my black ass bobbing up and
down on his brother"

Gord started to laugh as well, trying not to laugh out loud.
They walked back up to the cottage. When they got back Bill was
already in bed. They put the water in the kitchen turned off the
lights and went to bed. Spooning together they were soon asleep.

Halfway through the night Bill got up. He turned on the light in
his room and crept into the room where Gord and Lyle were
sleeping. He stood and stared at the two boys for some time.
There was just enough light coming from his room to make out some
of their features. Lyle was laying on his back and Gord was
still on his side. Bill moved over to the side of the bed that
Lyle was sleeping on. He took a deep breath and with a swift
movement he moved forward and plunged an old hunting knife that
they kept in the cottage, deep into Lyle's chest. Lyle's eyes
opened wide and he gasped, then . and then nothing, Bill could
see the young man's eyes staring without seeing in the shadowed
half dark. He withdrew the knife. He now moved to his brother's
side of the bed and just as quickly and with the same force
thrust the knife into his brother's back and into his heart. He
released the knife and left it in place in his brother's back.

He checked for Lyle's pulse and then Gord's. Both boys were
dead. Bill grabbed Lyle's body by the feet and dragged him off
the bed and into the other bedroom. He manoeuvred the body onto
the bed. He went out to the storage shed and came back with a
can full of gas. He drenched both bodies and the beds and the
floor of the bedrooms.

Back in the kitchen he washed himself and got dressed. With some
newspaper, matches and kindling from the firewood box in the
living room he went outside. It was about 3:00 AM and a dark
night. Crawling under the cottage in a back corner he crumpled
up the paper and arranged the kindling and added some other
material he found that would burn. He lit the match and started
the fire.

Once he saw that the materials were burning he hurried down the
hill and ran to his car. As he got to his car and turned to
look, he heard the familiar "FWHUMP" of Gasoline igniting. He
got in his car and drove off. On the hill opposite on the other
side of the lake from the cottage he stopped just long enough to
see it totally engulfed in flame. He shook his head sadly and
drove away, using the back route to return to the highway and
away.

It took Bill about an hour to get out to the highway and back
around to the cottage. When he got back there he ran to the
place as if in a panic. Some of the other cottagers were at the
scene being wakened by the crash of the cottage as it collapsed.
They held Bill back from getting too close. He felt enough
remorse for what he had done to produce believable alarm, and
horror, as he asked if his brother was anywhere to be found.

No-one had seen the boy. One of the cottagers made mention of
the fact that there had been a black man with his brother all
week. No one had seen either of them after the fire. They all
watched as the cottage burned. A fire truck arrived shortly
after Bill returned to the scene. Because of the location of the
cottage there was nothing more they could do other then some
crowd control and preliminary investigation.

One of the cottagers took Bill back to their cottage from where
he called his parents to tell them the news. He knew they would
be there as soon as they could get dressed and away. He looked
at the clock in the kitchen where he was. It was 5:45 AM

He went back to the cottage site. The fire department had set up
a gas driven pump on the shore and were pumping water on the
burning ruins of the cottage. It was a frame building, the fire
department did not arrive for at least an hour after the fire
started, there was not much left to save. He talked briefly with
the fire chief, who asked him where he had been, why he had not
been there and how he had come to be there when he did.

He made up a story about having gone out that evening after
coming to see his brother and was just coming back when he found
the cottage in flames.

The man asked him about his brother and his friend. He wanted to
know how the fire could have started, and where in the cottage.
As soon as the fire cooled they would be searching the rubble for
clues and bodies. Neither Gord nor Lyle had appeared so the
worst was being assumed by the authorities. By now the Fire
chief had been joined by a QPP officer.. (Quebec Provincial
Police) who was also asking a lot of questions.

Bill's parents arrived about 9:00 that morning. The firemen had
already found the remains of the two bodies in the rubble that
had been the cottage only a few hours before. It was when Bill
saw the bodies as they had been brought down to the shore that he
realised his mistake. As he looked at the bodies he saw the
blade of the knife still in his brother's back. The handle had
been burned off of course but the blade was still there. He
watched as the coroner who was going over the bodies in a
preliminary check, touch the blade, looked perplexed, look at him
and then call the officer over to talk. The officer also looked
at him as they talked. Bill could feel himself start to shake
inside. It was just at that moment he heard his mother's wail of
grief as she and his father arrived on the scene. They ran over
to him.

The officer came over to them and introduced himself. In broken
English. he gave Bill's parents a quick run down of what he knew
of the fire. He made no comment to them about the knife the
coroner had found. He then asked to talk to Bill alone .

"Did you talk to your brother and his friend at all last night?"
the officer asked him

Bill nodded

"And did they seem alright, did they say anything that might have
made you think that they were worried about anything?"

He shook his head.

Bill's mind was racing, he hadn't really thought about a story to
tell anyone, especially the police.. At the same time the horror
of what he had done started to settle in on his mind. It had all
been so sudden, almost unexpected, as unexpected as seeing his
brother being fucked by that black man. He recalled leaving his
brother alone and going to his own room after telling Gord that
he as not going to tell their parents. He recalled the plan that
started to formulate in his mind. He recalled getting the hunting
knife they had at the cottage, it was Gord's actually. He
recalled the next few hours as he considered both in horror and
with purpose the plan to murder the two of them. All these
thoughts raced through his mind as the officer was talking to
him.

"I killed my own brother" he thought, "I stabbed him and
murdered him"

"I beg your pardon" Bill was brought out of his reverie by the
officer grabbing his shoulder and talking to him. "What did you
say??"

It was then that Bill realised that he had been thinking out
loud. He stepped back. The shock of that tore through him. He
looked at the officer and at his parents who were staring at him.

"Bill!?" his mother stared at him wide-eyed. "What did you say?
You killed him?" She collapsed into his father's arms. His Dad
just stared at him in disbelief.

The next several hours were a blur as he was arrested and taken
away and interrogated. It was late afternoon before his parents
were even allowed to see him for a few minutes in the presence of
an officer. By then there was also a lawyer with them.

"Bill what happened? What on earth happened that you would want
to kill your brother?"

He slowly told his parents what had happened, what had driven him
to commit this horrible act.

He told them about how he found Lyle and Gord. He told him how
he decided that he would kill them both. He told them how he did
it.

He looked at his mum and dad. They just sat there stunned unable
to speak or even respond. His mother was sobbing. In one day
she had lost two sons.

She wanted to tell him that she would have lived with a gay son.
She wanted to tell him that she had already suspected it, and
that she had already prepared herself for it. She wanted to tell
him that nothing could have prepared her for the unspeakable
anguish that he had produced in her life this day. The words
wouldn't come, She could only sob softly and stare at him in
incomprehension.

The officer presently came back in and led their son away to a
holding cell to be transported to Montreal later that day to a
more secure facility.

The next several days flew by in a blur. Lyle's family was
notified and brought up to Montreal.

It was a very difficult time for both families as they came to
terms not only with the senseless killings but also the
revelation that Gord and Lyle had been homosexual lovers.

Gord's mother and father tried their best to welcome Lyle's
family, Aunt Mabel and Joe. Aunt Ernestine and Uncle Josh were
just not able to come up. It did not take Aunt Mabel long to
understand the pain that Gord's parents were feeling and to
realise that there was no animosity around Lyle. It was not a
racial thing, at least on the part of Gord's parents. They were
obviously equally horrified by both murders.

It was decided that Lyle's body would be returned to the States
to be buried next to his parents, who had died many years before.
However at Gord's mum's request Aunt Mabel agreed to a memorial
service for both young men at Gord's funeral.

Because of the autopsies and the criminal investigations it was
several days before this could happen. It was one afternoon in
that interim period of time that Aunt Mabel and Gord's Mum found
themselves alone for the first time together. At first they
didn't say anything, they just sat silently, deep in thought.
Gord's mum was knitting something as was her custom. But tears
were rolling down her face as she mourned her great loss.

Aunt Mabel gently touched her arm, her own tears running unabated
down her cheeks. "Yer son, was a special man Ma'am, yo should
have seen him down at Josh and Ernestine's'. It was like he was
part of the family. He was a special man Ma'am, You can be very
proud of him."

Gord's Mum looked at the dear lady that was sitting next to her
and broke down into deep heart wrenching sobs. Aunt Mabel joined
her in tears but got up and folded her arms around her. Ma'am I
knows that the thought o' Lyle and him and the thought of yo'
othe' boy killin' them is mo' than you can take right now but I
knows' that Lyle was very fond of yo' Gord, an yo' boy was fond
of mah Lyle, now thet cain't be wrong can it? They was both
special boys."

The two women hugged and held each other in their mutual grief.

"You know Mabel, I wondered about my son. When he told me that
Lyle wanted to come up and visit him, just the way he was acting
and the excitement he had at the thought of the visit I wondered
if there was something going on there. That wasn't really a
problem with me. I figured that if that was the way it was to be
then we would just deal with it. What I can't deal with is what
Bill did. I just can't understand what would have driven him to
do this . I'm so sorry about Lyle and so ashamed of what my son
did to him." The lady broke down into sobs and tears again.

Aunt Mabel shook her head sadly as she wept with her. They sat
together for a long time consoling each other.

The next day the bodies were released and funeral arrangements
were made in earnest. At the funeral home as they made the
arrangements, Joe, Lyle's brother with tears in his eyes reached
into his pocket and removed a ring. He gazed at it and then gave
it to Gord's Dad. "I think since they will not be together you
should put this in with Gord. It was Lyle's"

Gord's Dad nodded and hugged Joe. "That is very kind of you, I
think both Lyle and Gord would be happy"

Two days later a service was held in the church that Gord had
attended with his family for many years. Only a few family
friends were there and the Aunt Mabel and Joe. Both coffins were
set beside each other in the front. The Minister knowing the
very difficult situation had prepared quite beautiful and
comforting service. He had spoken to both families and was able
to bring together the friendship that these two lads had found in
each other.

After the service for Gord at the grave site all returned to the
house, where some of the ladies of the church had prepared a
luncheon for the family.

The next day Gord's Mum accompanied Aunt Mabel and Joe back to
South Carolina. She had decided that she wanted to be at the
service. As Joe had done she had presented Aunt Mabel with a
momento that had been precious to Gord to be buried with Lyle.
It was symbolic but important to both families that the two young
men be tied together in this way.

Regardless of what either family felt about homosexuality they
knew that what Lyle and Gord had together was special and had to
be celebrated and honoured.

Gord and Lyle, in mind's eye, rose above this world's scene
together forever free from persecution, their souls forever
united.
