Chapter Two: An open lunch.

Lunch was burgers and dogs from the grill and a
heavily filled pasta salad. It had chunks of ham,
salami, cheese, and assorted veggies in it. John still
hadn't gotten used to having pasta at every meal
except breakfast. Pete explained to him that it had
something to do with his mother's Italian background.
By contrast, John's parents were Irish therefore his
mother cooked more blandly.

Maria, these boys are gonna get fat just off your
salad!

NO! It'll be your burgers, Rudy!

She was right too. Pete's father, Rudolph, Rudy for
short, had made two burgers for each boy and each
burger was at least half a pound of seasoned ground
top-round beef.

Well Mama, we'll just have to swim that much more!
Pete said, giving his mother a quick peck on the
cheek.

Yeah Mrs. Nueclo, I'll just kick Pete's butt in the
water some more!

How many times do I have to tell you John, call me
Mama! Enough of this Mrs. Nueclo nonsense!

Yes John my boy, with you and Pete being such good
friends you should act more comfortable around us.

Yes sir, Err... I mean Rudy. Thanks for lunch... Mama.

Rudy continued, Both you boys need to realize that
Mama and I care a lot about you two, and you need the
chance to be kids before you finish school this year
and go off to god only knows where. You can be
comfortable around us. It's ok.

With that Pete spun John around and planted a kiss on
his lips then let go, Pete almost falling from the
momentum of the spin. Mama turned red and Rudy
chuckled.

Well, maybe not that comfortable. You don't see Mama
and I kissing in front of you guys! Rudy said
chuckling again.

PAPA! Come on! We just ate!

What! Look at your Mama! She's all red now! You better
get out of here then since, as you say, you just ate.
Again Rudy chuckled, this time looking toward Maria.

Run John! Before they start doing weird straight
people stuff!

I'm right with you! John yelled, taking Pete's hand
and running for their boat.
