Author's note: A gay love story which is a pre-sequel to 'The Ballet
Dancer' and follows Robert and Sam.

1.

Robert loved his parents and as their only child he was spoilt rotten. He
led an idyllic life down in Cornwall near Liskeard but at the age of
fifteen, tragedy happened and his mother died of cancer. It was all over
within a period of six months and Robert was devastated as was his
father. Throughout his life, Robert had also known a guy called Cooper who
was a regular visitor to the house. He'd never thought much about why he
visited so frequently and assumed he and his father were old friends. At
times he'd seen the two hug each other affectionately but Robert was used
to his father's hugs so thought nothing of it. Soon after his mother had
died, his father sat him down and said he had something to say.

"I need to tell you something Robert; I've wanted to do so for a long time
but never had the courage to do so; I'm gay and Cooper and I have been in
love for years; don't get me wrong, I loved your mother; she was the
kindest person I ever knew." Robert was shocked for a moment but gradually
things fell into place.

"Did she know...about you and Cooper?" His father nodded.

"She did but accepted the situation because she knew I loved her just as
much; I'm so sorry Robert but I felt I had to tell you now she's gone."
Robert could see tears in his father's eyes and rushed over to hug him.

"It's okay dad; I don't mind and I like Cooper; to be honest I think I too
may be gay". His father smiled and kissed him gently on the forehead.

"Your mother and I worked that out a long while ago". Robert looked at him
with a questioning look. "Well, you never seemed interested in girls and
you spend a lot of time with Ralph; besides, it takes one to know one you
know". They both grinned and hugged again.

"Thanks dad; I wasn't sure how to tell you and mum and I'm glad she knew
and wasn't bothered"

"She loved you very much Robert; all she ever wanted was for you to be
happy as I do so don't ever feel guilty of whom you are; okay there are
plenty of people around who don't approve of gay love but just ignore
them."

His father then asked Robert if he'd mind Cooper moving in with
them. Robert said of course he could. He looked on Cooper as an uncle so
had no problems with him living with them and to hell with what the
neighbours said.

Robert's father worked in a company that manufactured supplies for yachts
and small boats such as buoys and general tackle. He was also a talented
artist and frequently painted local scenes which he then sold. Robert had
always been interested in cooking and had frequently helped his mother in
the kitchen, often cooking the complete meal. When he was eighteen he
announced that he wanted to go to catering college to train to be a
chef. As always his father encouraged him and gave him every support he
needed. Having completed the two year course he decided to take a job in a
hotel as a trainee chef. The problem was that the job was in Oxford. He'd
searched and searched for more local jobs but there was nothing. Both his
dad and Cooper encouraged him to go for it saying he'd regret it if he
didn't.

So, with sadness in his heart, Robert finally moved to Oxford to take up
his new post. He loved the work but he hated the current chef in
charge. The guy was a bully as well as a homophobe. Robert kept his
sexuality to himself but somehow the guy picked up on it and frequently
made comments such as 'here's the queer'. The guy also particularly bullied
a young guy who was Polish. He was a kitchen assistant and Robert tried to
protect him as much as he could but the more he did the more the guy made
homophobic remarks about Robert.

Eventually, when Robert had just reached his twenty second birthday he
decided he'd had enough so decided to look for another job and signed up
with an employment agency. The young guy who interviewed him was also
gay. They were much the same age and had met each other in a gay bar in
Oxford. They'd become good friends although nothing sexual took place apart
from the occasional grope. One day Simon called Robert to say he had what
he felt was the perfect job for him so Robert went to see him on his next
day off. Simon said a wealthy guy called Jason Palmer had recently
purchased a new house called Croft House in Woodcote and was looking for
someone to manage it for him. He was gay and ideally looking for someone of
the same persuasion and he wanted someone who could cook.

"He spends a lot of his time in London but plans to entertain at the new
house so wants someone who can cook; I think you'd be perfect Robert since
you love catering and from what I've seen you're well organised; apart from
that you'd live in a beautiful house with all expenses paid." Robert was
indeed interested so an interview was set up for him to meet Jason
Palmer. Anything to get away from the bastard he currently worked for.

The interview was arranged for the following day so Robert drove to
Woodcote in his clapped out Ford but it just about kept going with few
problems. When he found the house and drove up to the wrought iron gates
with its high brick walls, his heart jumped with excitement. He pressed the
intercom at the gate and having announced himself the gates slowly opened
for him to drive through. As he moved along the driveway he gasped at the
beautiful house ahead of him. Never in a month of Sundays did he imagine he
might live in a place like this but he was jumping ahead of himself. Jason
Palmer might not think he was suitable or not like him. For that matter he
might not like Mr Palmer but having looked him up on the net and read all
about him he doubted that. The guy was loaded as was his father. Macaulay
Palmer was a financier and owned a private bank in London. Both father and
son were multimillionaires and the son owned several businesses which
included a theatre and an upmarket art gallery in London.

"Thank you for coming" Jason said as he welcomed Robert into the house. For
a moment Robert just stood and stared at the beautiful surroundings. Ahead
of him was a staircase that swept up to the upper floor and there were
rooms either side of the large hallway he was now standing in. "Can I take
your coat?" Jason asked smiling. Robert suddenly came to attention and
slipped off his coat.

"Thank you sir" he said as he continued to admire the architecture and the
few items of furniture which were all very expensive. Jason Palmer was
every bit as attractive as the photographs Robert had seen on the internet
and he fell in love with the guy instantly. He had green eyes which
sparkled and Robert was spellbound.

"Come on through" Jason was saying as he placed a hand on Robert's
shoulder. The mere touch made Robert's body shiver with excitement. He knew
instinctively that the job whatever it entailed was perfect for him. Jason
sat down behind a beautiful mahogany desk in the small room he'd now taken
Robert into and invited Robert to sit down in a deep brown leather chair in
front of the desk. He made Robert feel at ease immediately and Robert
relaxed. Having told Jason all about his experience to date including the
reason why he wanted to leave the hotel, Jason told him about the job and
what it entailed.

"Basically Robert, I would want you to manage the house for me and do the
catering when I'm here plus for any guests I may have." He explained that
he spent a lot of his time in London but hoped to come down to Woodcote at
least once a month and possibly more as time went by. "You will also need
to recruit some help but I'd leave that to you to decide how you want to
deal with that; you can either employ casual labour as and when required or
employ someone on a permanent basis." Robert said it would be more cost
effective and more efficient to employ a permanent person.

"I agree; do you have a regular boyfriend?" Jason asked suddenly changing
the subject. Robert grinned. He had met a guy who he frequently met in
Oxford and they'd spent a few nights together.

"I do, well we've been going out together for about a year now and Sam
lives at home in a small village just outside Oxford; he's a self employed
odd job man doing gardening, decorating and anything else that comes his
way."

"Would he be interested in working here? There are grounds that need
regular attention apart from occasional maintenance jobs around the house
and you'll need someone to help with cleaning and things." Robert thought
for a moment. Sam might well be interested since he knew he was not that
happy at home because of his father's attitude towards gays. For that
reason Sam had not come out at home and was always afraid of being seen out
and about with Robert.

"Can he drive a car?" Jason added whilst Robert cogitated "Only it would be
useful to have someone to chauffeur me around when I'm here".

"Yes he can; he owns a van for his work and I'm sure he'd be only too
willing to add that to his duties; I could contact him and ask him to come
and see you". Jason said that sounded perfect and offered Robert the job.

"But before you make a final decision, let me show you round the
house". Robert jumped up and Jason showed him the other rooms downstairs
which consisted of a dining room, a lounge with a conservatory and a large
kitchen which from what Robert could see contained every conceivable labour
saving device. The kitchen was brand new since Jason had just refurbished
it. Upstairs he saw each of the three guest rooms, the main bedroom which
was at the back of the house and the large bathroom that was a wet room
with a shower and an oval Jacuzzi bath. This too had been refurbished so
everything was new and gleamed. Finally Jason showed him the large room at
the end of the corridor which would be his. This contained a double bed, a
small sofa and television for Robert to use as a sitting room if he so
wished.

"You're welcome to use the other rooms in the house as well but I thought
you might like your own private space as well; and of course, if we decide
Sam is who you want as your assistant and you'd like him to share this room
with you then that is fine by me, otherwise I will see if I can find other
suitable accommodation on the estate." Jason then explained that there was
a home farm which was managed separately plus a few farm cottages. Robert
looked round and couldn't believe his luck. It all looked perfect and he
loved the idea of managing a house like this for a guy like Jason who he
very much liked. He also knew Sam would jump at the chance since he was
unhappy living at home. Although they'd been seeing each other for about a
year now, he and Sam were still in the early stages of their relationship
but Robert wanted to take it to the next level. Perhaps this would be his
opportunity because he loved Sam and he was fairly sure the feeling was
reciprocated.

Having accepted the offer and said that he had to give a week's notice with
his current employer, Robert called Sam to see if he was available to come
almost immediately since Jason had to go back to London the following
day. Once Sam had heard the news he jumped at the chance and said he'd be
there within twenty minutes.

Unbeknown to Robert, things at Sam's home had taken a definite turn for the
worse. Just a few days before his father had been ranting and raving about
'queers' as he called them when something had come on the news about gays
and a massive row had ensued between his mum and his father. She was sick
and tired of George's bigoted views concerning race and sexuality so she
told him exactly what she thought of him. Without thinking she told him
that his own son was gay. Sam had never actually told his mum that he was
gay but she had picked up on the signs years before. Her twin brother had
been gay and had been in a relationship with the local farmer for whom
George, Sam's father, worked. Sam's uncle Gary had died suddenly when Sam
was six so he hardly remembered him but he knew his mum missed her twin
terribly.

"I'm not having a fucking queer living under my roof" his father shouted at
Sam who by now was cowering in the corner. His father frequently lashed out
at him when he was angry so he decided to keep well away knowing the man's
views. Sam looked at his mum who suddenly realised what she'd done. "Get
the fuck out of my house; always knew you were not a real man; just like
your uncle."

This made Sam's mother stand up and tower over George. She was not a big
woman but when she was riled you certainly knew about it. "If anyone is to
get out it's you; I'm sick and tired of your bigoted views and may I remind
you that this house is mine, not yours since Mr Harris gave me the lifetime
tenancy when Gary died; you have no rights in this house; you're not even
married to me because your ex wouldn't divorce you so go and find your
floozy at the Dog and Duck and live with her."

George looked at her shocked. It was true that his ex had refused to
divorce him when that marriage had broken up so he was not legally married
to Mary and of course the tenancy for the cottage had been given to Mary
when her twin had died so suddenly seventeen years ago but he hadn't
realised that she knew about the publican at the Dog and Duck. He'd been
having an affair with her for the past year since his relationship with
Mary had broken down long ago, assuming it had ever been one but when his
previous wife had thrown him out because he'd slept with Mary and produced
their child, she'd taken him in since she felt having a father for Sam was
important. How wrong she'd been.

"Did you think I didn't know about your relationship with that slut?" Mary
threw at him seeing his shocked expression, "It's been common knowledge for
the past year so get out now and never darken these doors again."

Sam remained in his corner and felt tears in his eyes. He was sure his
father wouldn't go that quietly but eventually he did having packed a bag
with a few things. As soon as he heard him slam the front door of the
cottage behind him, Sam looked at his mum.

"I'm sorry Sam; I didn't mean to bring it out like that". Sam moved across
to where she was now sitting and lightly kissed her.

"It's okay; I knew it would come out at some time". Sam went up to his room
which was in the roof space of the single storey cottage and sat on his
bed. He thought about calling Robert but knew he'd be on shift. They seldom
got together much since Robert's head chef was forever changing the shifts
and made life difficult for staff if they refused to work when he said. But
what he was more worried about was continuing to live in the cottage with
his mum since he didn't think his dad would accept being thrown out of his
home. He also did a lot of work on the farm for Mr Harris where his father
worked so he was bound to bump into him every so often. Now he knew his son
was gay he'd make sure everyone else knew.

As it happened, George did accept the situation and when he landed up at
the Dog and Duck, he was welcomed with open arms so moved in with his
woman. Even so, the Dog and Duck was only in the next village so Sam knew
he'd still see his father around at some point in time and he wasn't sure
he wanted to take the risk. He hated the guy and if he was honest with
himself, he was frightened of him.

When Robert phoned to tell him about the new job he'd just accepted and
that there was an opening for an assistant, Sam jumped with joy. It was
perfect since Woodcote was the other side of Oxford and miles away from the
village where he lived. He also loved Robert although they'd never really
had time to show their love for each other. He downed tools and drove
immediately to Croft House. When he found it and stopped his van outside
the large wrought iron gates, his heart was thumping with excitement and
nerves. He was never that good when it came to interviews and meeting
people he didn't know. When Robert had said he'd be there as well, he gave
a sigh of relief.

As soon as he'd pulled up to one side of the front door, having decided he
shouldn't park immediately outside it, Robert came out and greeted
him. Once Sam had climbed out his van they fell into each other's arms. For
several moments they just hugged and kissed. "God it's good to have you in
my arms again" Robert whispered. Sam gave a shy grin as was his usual way
but Robert could tell something was bothering him. "What's wrong?"

"Long story but shall we say your call came just at the right time; will
tell you later babe". It was the first time Sam had called Robert babe and
he rather liked it.

"Come on and I'll introduce you to Jason; he's gorgeous" Robert grinned.

Jason shook Sam's hand and invited him to sit down where Robert had been
sitting for his interview. Robert pulled up a chair to one side and Sam
smiled at him. Jason could sense the love between the two guys and decided
there and then that they'd make the perfect couple to manage things at
Croft House. He asked Sam to go through what skills he could offer and was
impressed. Sam, who was now nineteen, was not only an experienced gardener
but had carpentry skills as well as general DIY experience so he'd be a
useful addition to the household and provide good support for Robert.

"And will you mind helping Robert out in the house with things like
cleaning, washing and ironing?" Sam said he didn't mind what he did and
delighted to help his boyfriend. Robert's heart lifted when he heard Sam
use the term boyfriend. He'd never said that before. Jason then went
through the pay and conditions he'd discussed with Robert and then stood
up. "Excellent, so perhaps you'd like to show Sam round Robert and let him
see the room you'll be sharing; I take it you will be sharing?" Jason
grinned. Robert nodded and took hold of Sam's hand. Jason smiled to himself
as he watched the two disappear out into the hall. He felt very satisfied
with his appointments so immediately called Simon at the employment
agency. Robert was only a year older than him and Sam two years younger, so
he knew he'd get on well with both of them.

When Robert took Sam into their room, Sam gasped. It was beautiful and he
immediately went over to the window to look out over the garden which was
laid mainly to lawn with a few flower beds but he quickly thought of ideas
of how he could improve it. Robert came up behind and wrapped his arms
round him. The feel of Robert's body up close to his made him feel so much
better. He held Robert's hands and pulled his arms tight. "Love you
Robert".

"Love you too" Robert whispered into his ear, "We are so going to enjoy
living and working here; Jason is a lovely guy and from what I've read,
he's loaded so money will never be a problem."

"He doesn't give the air of someone who's rich does he?" Robert agreed and
it was one of the many things he liked about Jason in that he treated
everyone as an equal. "Not sure I could get used to calling him Jason
instead of sir though". Robert giggled as he kissed Sam on his neck and
held him tight. He'd have loved to have taken him straight to bed but that
was not possible, at least not yet. Besides, he had to get back to the
hotel and hand his notice in which he was not looking forward to doing
knowing how the chef in charge, his immediate boss, would react.

They went downstairs to find Jason and said their goodbyes. It was arranged
that Robert and Sam would start in a week's time when Jason was next at the
house and they would move in. Before they went their separate ways, they
agreed to meet up that evening for Sam to tell Robert what had been going
on at home and to discuss their new life together. Both left feeling
excited.


On his way back to Oxford, Robert decided to go and see the Restaurant
Manager and hand his notice in to him rather than the Chef in
Charge. Fortunately he was available so Robert gave him the letter he'd
quickly written beforehand. The manager was shocked and wanted to know why
Robert was leaving.

"Do you want the real reason?" Robert said having decided it was time
someone told senior management exactly what was going on in the kitchen
since the turnover of staff was three times what it was elsewhere in the
hotel. Everyone else who'd left had been too afraid to be honest knowing
how the Chef in Charge could make life difficult for them wherever they
went. The guy seemed to have contacts everywhere.

"Of course" the manager said looking somewhat surprised at the question.

"I'm fed up with working for a Chef in Charge who is a bully, racist, a
homophobe and totally unreasonable with staff. In addition, I don't like
working for an organisation that seem to either approve of or turn a blind
eye to a member of staff who acts fraudulently and fiddles the system."

The manager looked aghast, especially having heard the last
comment. Finally he asked Robert to expand so he did. When he'd listed out
all the occasions the Chef in Charge had bullied not only him but other
staff as well, made racist and homophobic comments, and how he frequently
changed the shift rota forcing staff to work well beyond the legally
allowed hours, the manager nearly had a fit. Robert then explained how the
guy was acting fraudulently by paying suppliers for provisions in cash and
then producing invoices under a company that he owned at a considerably
higher rate than he'd paid, the manager was fuming.

"Did you not have any idea that he acted like this?" Robert asked having
seen the manager's reaction.

"No I certainly did not" he replied trying to get his head round how he'd
missed this. The problem was that the Chef in Charge was a devious
individual and clearly lied through his teeth. "But why has nobody ever
raised this before?" Robert laughed.

"Simple; the guy is a bully and the staff are frightened of him; they know
if they make waves that he will make sure their name is blacklisted within
the industry."

"So why have you? Are you not frightened of him?" Robert grinned.

"I've been biding my time and collecting as much evidence as possible until
the time was right to show his true character; I'm also not staying in the
catering industry so am not dependent on him giving a good reference or
more to the point, giving me a bad one. My new employer has already spoken
to HR and got the information he needs regarding my character and work
record."

The manager nodded as he thought what to do next. He realised that his head
could be on the block over this since he was the overall manager. He then
asked Robert if he'd be willing to tell the General Manager what he'd told
him and present the evidence he had. Robert said he'd be delighted to do so
but was not prepared to work out his notice with the Chef in Charge still
in post.

"Oh don't worry, he will be suspended whilst the matter is under
investigation and I can assure you that your name will not be divulged."

Within minutes Robert was sitting in the General Manager's office along
with the Restaurant Manager relating what he'd said earlier. Robert could
sense that The General Manager was fuming by the time he'd finished and
presented the documentary evidence Robert had gathered together over the
year that the guy in question had been in post. As soon as Robert had
finished, the General Manager picked up his phone and spoke to the head of
security. He asked that the Chef in Charge was brought immediately to the
board room and accompanied until he arrived. "And don't let him talk to
anyone or make any phone calls". The Restaurant Manager, who was looking
somewhat pale by now, glanced at Robert and raised his eyebrows. It looked
as if the Chef in Charge was at last being held to account and his days
were numbered.

The General Manager then turned to Robert. "If we put in place a new Chef
in Charge with immediate effect, would you reconsider your resignation and
stay since I believe you are a valued member of the kitchen staff." Robert
smiled sweetly but said he wouldn't. In no way was he going to give up the
opportunity of a lifetime and let Jason's offer pass him by, although he
didn't say that.

"The problem is that this is not the first time the hotel has employed
unscrupulous managers in the kitchen; the last guy was not much better and
fiddled the hotel like mad so I don't have much confidence in the
organisation." The General Manager looked at the Restaurant Manager who'd
recruited the employees concerned.

"Mm, I don't blame you, so I wish you every success for the future and
thank you for being so honest with us. I personally will make sure nothing
is done or said that blackens your name and that you are paid every penny
that is owed to you." Robert thanked him and said he was happy to work out
his week's notice which in any event only involved three more shifts
because of the last minute changes the current manager had made the
previous day. As Robert was about to leave the General Manager asked if he
could keep the documents Robert had passed over. Robert nodded saying he
had copies in any event. The General Manager smiled knowingly. The hotel
had lost a good employee who'd probably have made a good manager had he
been given the chance so he fully intended to make sure things changed.

Robert slipped out without being seen by anyone he knew and went home. That
evening he met up with Sam and told him what had happened. Sam hugged him
and told him he was brilliant.

"So what has happened at home babe?" Sam smiled. It was the first time
Robert had called him that and he liked the sound of it. From there on they
called each other babe. Sam relayed his story as he lay in Robert's arms on
the bed. Robert's bedsit was too small to fit any chairs in so the bed was
used for everything.

"I'm so sorry" Robert said once Sam had told him everything, "but at least
you can move out now and start a new life; you still want to do that do
you?" Sam looked up at Robert and grinned.

"Of course I do; I can't wait; I've wanted to move in with you for months
now but never had the nerve to ask you." Robert smiled and kissed the
lovely kind guy in his arms. The kiss soon turned into a passionate one and
tongues ran wild. He too had wanted Sam to move in with him but had never
been quite sure if that was what Sam had wanted so had said nothing waiting
for a sign from him. It seemed they'd both been holding back.

By the time the kiss finished, their bodies had reacted in tune with the
