Someone to Watch over Me, Chapter 13

Mike awakened on Saturday morning aware that Sebastian was snuggled against
his back, with one arm draped over him. It felt very natural and very
good. Mike would be happy to start every day like that.

They had spent the previous evening watching a movie and then had made
love. Each time they got together, their relationship seemed to become
more comfortable and more secure. The residue of their recent bonding was
now just a crusty reminder of the excitement and caring they'd shared the
night before.

"Have you given notice on your room yet," Sebastian asked as he stretched.

"Yup. I figured out that I'm spending more time out than I spend there
anyway. By the time I go to classes, study in the library, and do my
workouts at the club, I'm hardly in the room at all during the week except
to sleep. Since I spend the weekends here, there's no reason to pay for
something I'm barely using. Besides, the benefits I thought I'd experience
from dorm life are far outweighed by the fact that I'm becoming more and
more attached to you."

"Your roommate probably doesn't mind having the place to himself."

"Yeah, he's such a homophobe anyway. He talks about dirty fags all the
time and claims he's getting laid almost every day, but I think it's all
bullshit. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a closet case."

"Either way, I love you and I'd feel better if you were here instead of
around him. No telling what he might do if he finds out you're gay and
stumbles in drunk some night. I don't want anything to happen to you."

"I have my homework for Monday done already. What would you like to do
today?" Mike said, steering the subject away from his roommate.

"We need to go get fitted for our tuxes so we're ready for the wedding.
Then I think it would be nice to go to the art museum. There's a Monet
exhibit that I'd like to see if you're interested."

"Yeah! I love his work. You know, the more I'm around you the more common
interests I find we have. I think we were destined to be together!"

"I do too."

----------

Paul and Doug were reviewing their wedding plans one more time to make sure
everything was in order. Finding that their family had seen to all the
details, they felt confident they could at last concentrate on other
things.

Paul had a paper to write before Thanksgiving break and was determined to
finish it over the weekend so he could feel free to kick back a little
during the week before their big day the following Saturday.

Doug made up some flimsy excuse about catching up on a project at work in
order to stay out of the house for much of the day so that Paul could work
without any distractions. Despite their good intentions, they sometimes
found it difficult to keep their hands off each other.

Paul figured out what his lover was doing and appreciated it. He thought
of how much Doug still watched out for him in many subtle ways without
expecting any recognition for doing so.

-----------

By the time Doug came home with Chinese carryout for an early supper,

Paul was to the point of polishing the final draft. The first draft had
been revised already, but he wanted Doug to edit for incorrect usage,
punctuation, and sentences that didn't flow as well as they might. It was
always good to have another opinion.

He asked Doug to read the first couple of pages while he set the food out.
During the time Doug was engaged in editing, Paul got paper, scissors, a
thin marker, and a pair of tweezers to play a little trick on his lover.

Doug had brought crab Rangoon, egg foo yung, almond chicken, Mongolian
beef, rice, and fortune cookies for their meal. These were all Paul's
favorites. The men ate slowly, savoring each bite and washing it down with
Chinese tea that Paul had brewed while he had readied his prank.

"Hmm, I wonder if we'll get good fortunes for our wedding," he said to
Doug, trying not to smile.

"Probably not. Those things are so lame."

Doug broke open one of the fortune cookies and pulled out the small strip
of paper. It looked a bit odd because it lacked the usual lucky numbers on
the back. He read it and grinned.

"What does it say?" Paul inquired, innocently.

"'You will get lucky tonight!'" Doug quoted. "I'll bet yours says the
same."

"Actually mine says, `Confucius say you get laid soon'."

"Cute! I wonder how they knew."

"Beats me," Paul giggled.

----------

After dinner, the guys spent about an hour revising Paul's paper - Doug
editing and making suggestions and Paul making the adjustments, changing
the wording slightly to be consistent with his normal usage. As soon as he
was happy with the resulting document, he put it to bed so that he could
read it with a fresh eye the following day. Then he coaxed Doug into their
bedroom. It didn't take much urging.

"Remember those handcuffs we bought last month at the adult shop after we'd
talked about a cop and robber scenario? Well I'd laid them out and I was
going to have you arrest me and force me to have sex with you tonight. But
now, after my experience with that cop, I don't think I even want to play
that game for a while, if ever!"

"I can empathize. I don't think you should be restrained like that right
now, even in play. There are other fantasies we can act out if you're
interested."

"I was a very bad boy for switching those fortunes," Paul grinned. "I
might need to be taken over your knee..."

"Ah, but by doing so, you've given us better ones. I think I'll reward you
by giving you a full-body massage, concentrating on your glutes. How would
that be?"

"Awesome!" Paul exclaimed. "How do you want me?"

"How about showered and naked as the day you were born? In fact, I'll join
you in the shower to make sure we're both squeaky clean."

The guys did wash their own and each other's privates thoroughly. In fact,
they nearly erupted in the process. Then, they kissed their way back to
the bed.

Doug laid a big towel on the bottom sheet for Paul to lie on face-down. He
straddled Paul's legs, applied oil to his shoulders, and began to knead his
muscles. It was a great feeling for both of them. Paul could sense his
whole body relaxing under Doug's loving touch. He hadn't realized how much
he'd tensed up while hunched over his laptop most of the day.

Doug worked his way down slowly toward Paul's firm buns. It took a lot of
self-discipline to keep from grabbing those meaty globes before he was done
with his back.

When he did reach Paul's butt, he lovingly caressed the firm flesh he found
there. Applying more oil, he worked in a circular motion, edging ever
closer to Paul's rectum. By then, Paul was quivering in anticipation. He
didn't have to wait too long before Doug's middle finger was teasing his
hole.

Paul pushed his ass upward so Doug could continue his work unimpeded. Doug
took the hint and moved so that he straddled one of Paul's legs instead of
both. Paul shifted the other one over to give Doug easier access to his
hole and balls. Pretty soon Paul was asking to be entered.

With Paul well lubed and on his knees with his head down and his butt in
the air, Doug rubbed his erection across Paul's rosebud in a teasing
manner. Paul was now to the point of begging.

"Don't make me wait any longer! My fortune said I was going to get laid
soon and I want it to come true right now!"

Doug applied one more coat of lube to his throbbing cock and pushed past
Paul's muscle ring. Paul gave a sigh of satisfaction when it came in
contact with his prostate. Then Doug began the slow, steady rhythm that he
knew would drive Paul skyward.

Paul began to thrust his butt back to meet Doug's strokes, signaling it was
time to speed things up. Doug grabbed Paul's hips to draw them closer as
he pushed forward. His grip kept the rhythm in synch and prevented
fallout. Their excitement soon reached a fever pitch.

With a whimper and moan of fulfillment, Paul unloaded on the towel beneath
him. The clenching of his anal muscles brought Doug with him before he
completely finished. They collapsed on the bed satisfied.

"Remind me to bring home fortune cookies often!" Doug joked.

"Maybe I'll get a big package of them at the supermarket," Paul suggested.

"That's fine with me, but I'm more interested in the size of your package!"

----------

On Friday night there was a short rehearsal in the chapel followed by
dinner at Vicenza's for all the participants. Justin, who was their server
again, was pleased to have been requested for the duty. He made sure
everything was just right, and was tipped handsomely for his efforts.

Later that night, Paul and Doug spent a few leisurely minutes in the hot
tub before retiring to their bed. They relaxed completely in the warm
bubbling water and then took a quick shower to make sure their bodies were
free of chemicals.

Once in bed, they cuddled like they had on their very first night together.
By some unspoken agreement, their main desire was to snuggle intimately
rather than to engage in hot sex. They'd talked previously about
abstaining for a few days prior to their honeymoon cruise to make it all
the more torrid, and they were sticking to their plan.

"Mmm, I can't believe that tomorrow we'll be legally wed!" Paul whispered.
"I felt a year ago that I could live with you forever, but I was afraid it
might not happen."

"Baby, I never had a moment's doubt from my standpoint. I'll admit that I
was afraid too – that you'd find someone else. I mean, you're so cute
and sensitive and loving. You could have anyone you wanted."

"I do!" Paul responded. "I have you."

Doug rewarded him with a tender kiss on the back of his neck. They fell to
sleep feeling loved.

----------

Although it was a small wedding, it was quite elegant. Mike was Paul's
attendant and Ashley was Doug's. Dakota and Sebastian acted as ushers and
would join the others at the altar for the ceremony after all the guests
were seated.

Marie and Gwen lit candles to represent their sons before the ceremony.
After their vows, the men would use them to light the unity candle
signifying their becoming one flesh.

As Paul and Doug surveyed the crowd before they walked down the aisle, it
seemed to them that most everyone they'd invited had shown up for their
special day. It made them happy to know that they had many friends and
supporters.

While the organist played the prelude, Katelyn walked down the aisle
sprinkling rose petals. Jayden accompanied her, carrying a heart-shaped
pillow with two rings pinned to it. He proudly stood next to his sister in
front of the altar.

They were followed by Ashley and Mike who walked arm in arm.

Finally Paul and Doug processed toward the altar together. They each
kissed their mothers and soon-to-be mothers-in-law before standing in the
center of the group facing the front.

Tony Chapman sang "Somewhere" from "Westside Story" - the solo they'd
requested. His beautiful tenor voice gave it a new meaning for them.

Dr. Stone greeted the congregation and gave the opening prayer after which
he read several scriptures about marriage and talked about its special
meaning. He then read the scriptures about the love between David and
Jonathan. He speculated that had times and attitudes been different, they
might have been joined in matrimony as Paul and Doug were being today.

Finally, the two grooms faced each other and repeated the vows that they
had written.

"In lasting love for you, I Douglas Hartke do promise to love, honor, and
cherish you until we are parted in death. I will watch over you in times
of sickness as you have me. I will always treat you with respect and do my
best to be the husband you want me to be."

"I, Paul Cage, do promise to love, honor, and cherish you until death parts
us. And I fully expect to be with you in the eternal realm when we have
left this world. I will watch over you in sickness and in health as you
have protected me, watched over me, and provided for my needs. I, too,
will do my best to be the husband you desire."

"Paul, my beloved, with this ring I thee wed." Doug said, placing the ring
on Paul's finger.

"Doug, love of my life, accept this ring as a token of my undying love for
you." Paul smiled, putting the ring on Doug's finger.

"By the authority vested in me by God and this state, I pronounce these two
men to be lawfully married. The grooms may kiss." Dr. Stone said.

To the applause of all in the congregation, the two radiant men shared a
brief, chaste kiss, their first as a married couple.

Instead of having a receiving line, the couple chose to greet the guests by
rows as they left the chapel. And since they'd posed for most of the
photos before the ceremony, they were able to get to the hotel for the
reception shortly after their guests had arrived.

Dinner was a four-course meal with wine for those who desired it. Dessert,
of course, was wedding cake. The usual rounds of toasts were made by the
people in the wedding party and all were pretty mellow before it was over.
Doug and Paul had arranged for a limo to drive the wedding party to the
airport to see them off and then take the rest of them to their
destinations so that no one would need to be driving.

After dinner, the men were called out to the dance floor by Travis who was
acting as their disc jockey.

"Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I'm Travis McGuire. I used to work
with Paul and I'm really pleased to have been asked to provide music for
your dancing pleasure tonight. Paul is probably surprised that I arrived
on time. That's a little inside joke...

After the couple's first dance together, you are invited to dance with the
grooms if you wish, but it's going to cost you. Your dollar for the
privilege will go into the big fishbowl on the table near my sound
equipment. The money will all be sent to "Foundation Two" which looks
after teens who have been displaced from their homes. It's one of the
guys' favorite charities.

Before we have that first dance, I have a little story to tell. When I
asked them what music they wanted for this special dance, they were
together in the room, and both told me to choose whatever I thought was
appropriate. Then each of them contacted me separately and gave me their
request. They both wanted to surprise their husband. Interestingly, but
not really surprising, they chose the same song. Here it is gentlemen."

When the music began, the grooms had tears in their eyes. It was an
orchestral arrangement, but Tony Chapman sang the words that had come to
have special meaning for them, changing one from the original text. They
began to dance when he got to the chorus.

There's a saying old, says that love is blind

Still we're often told, seek and ye shall find

So I'm going to seek a certain lad I've had in mind

Looking everywhere, haven't found him yet

He's the big affair I cannot forget

Only man I ever think of with regret

I'd like to add his initial to my monogram

Tell me, where is the shepherd for this lost lamb

There's a somebody I'm longing to see

I hope that he turns out to be

Someone who'll watch over me

I'm a little lamb who's lost in the wood

I know I could always be good

To one who'll watch over me

Although he may not be the man

Some guys* think of as handsome

To my heart he carries the key

Won't you tell him please to put on some speed

Follow my lead

Oh how I need

Someone to watch over me

Someone to watch over me

Tony repeated the chorus and they continued to dance.

*Original word is "girls."

The 1987 movie Someone To Watch Over Me, directed by Ridley Scott, takes
its title from this song. The soundtrack features three versions of
"Someone to Watch Over Me", two of which were new renditions by Sting and
Roberta Flack. The third version used was the 1961 recording by Gene
Ammons. A soundtrack album was never issued and so the Roberta Flack
performance (produced by Michael Kamen) remains unreleased. Sting included
his version on the compilation At The Movies, released in 1999.

This song was made famous to another generation in the 1996 American movie
Mr. Holland's Opus. Jean Louisa Kelly played the part of Rowena, who sang
"Someone to Watch Over Me" in this movie; however, a different version of
the song sung by Julia Fordham was included on the movie soundtrack.

Asher Book also sings it in the new remake of "Fame" (2009)

A couple of you sent me this link:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_supreme_court_gay_marriage

Looks like the high court is doing something right. We have conservatives
who won a majority of seats in the Iowa House introducing a bill that would
call for a state constitutional amendment to outlaw same-sex marriage,
civil unions, and domestic unions completely. The senate has a majority
that likely won't go along with it, but it's scary!

I'll probably begin posting a story called: "Tommy and Tanner" or similar
title under the high school section in a while. I may take a few weeks
off. Anyway, I'll try to send a heads-up to those who are on my emailing
list.

Thanks again for all the encouragement and kind remarks about this story.
