Chapter 5

Paul looked forward to Thanksgiving with mixed emotions. It would be his
first time to meet Doug's family and he was worried about making a good
impression. Part of him was excited and hopeful; the other part of him was
dreading the experience.

Doug's mother and stepfather lived in a small town about 80 miles away. It
was far enough in distance that Doug didn't get there too often, but it was
close enough to make the drive easily in an hour and a half without
speeding. Not much happened there. Residents lived quiet lives, and most
of them knew each other well. It could feel claustrophobic to someone used
to a larger city. If you wanted to do something "naughty", you'd better do
it elsewhere or expect the whole town to find out sooner or later.

----------

They took the convertible instead of Doug's SUV even though it was too
chilly to drive with the top down. Doug enjoyed its sporty look and so did
Paul. It would certainly be noticed when they drove into town.

Doug asked Paul to drive for the first half of the trip. Paul didn't turn
down the chance, and concentrating on the road took his mind off of
obsessing over how he would be received.

As Doug had predicted, his mother hugged Paul when they were introduced.
She showed them up to Doug's old room which had a double bed. Sleeping was
going to be very close for the next few days -- not that either of the
guys minded.

"After you two get settled, go bug your sister and then you can go look for
Jeremy in his workshop. He's messing around out there by himself --
probably drinking beer more than building anything."

----------

Ashley gave Paul a hug and a peck on the cheek when they met. She smiled
as she appraised his lean, fit body. Anyone could tell that she was
impressed and interested. It was the harmless kind of flirting that Paul
was used to from the opposite sex. He was sure she wouldn't persist once
she figured out that he was "with" her brother.

When Doug introduced Paul to his stepfather, he sensed something different
in his stepfather's body language -- a kind of tension. He decided to
allow them to converse freely for a few minutes without his presence, so he
excused himself to use the bathroom. On the way out, he unobtrusively set
a small object on the window sill near the workbench. He was determined to
find out the reason for his step-father's strange behavior.

----------

"It would be to your advantage not to let anyone know that we've met
before, cocksucker." Jeremy said.

"As I recall, it's you who loved sucking my cock and begged me to fuck you
hard." Paul responded quietly.

"Don't get smart with me, boy! I'm not going to let you spoil my cushy
setup here. She may not be what I want in bed, but she's got money. If I
so much as suspect that you've told on me, I'll tell Doug what his precious
boyfriend does for a living."

"He knows what I did to survive, and he knows that I don't do it anymore.
How are you going to explain how YOU know what I did?"

"I'll say that a friend at work showed me your picture on craigslist."

"Right! And you remembered my face from that? Besides, I was never on

there because I didn't have a computer after my parents kicked me out."

"I'll ask Doug a couple of questions about how he met you and we'll find
out if he knows of not. You'd better do as I say and keep your mouth shut
if you know what's good for you."

"And just how will you explain to my mother what you were doing paying a
guy for sexual favors with her money?" Doug said as he entered the shop
again.

"Uh, what are you talking about?" Jeremy sputtered.

"I'm working on a new listening device that I hope to sell to the
government. Would you like a demonstration?"

Doug picked up the small object from the sill and pushed a button. The
conversation between Jeremy and Paul came back loud and clear.

"I'm sorry, Doug." Paul said with a catch in his voice. "I was afraid this
would come up someday, but I never expected it to happen like this!

I'll get out of here before your brother arrives. Is there a bus or train
that I can get to go back to home? I'll get my stuff cleared out of your
house as soon as I can."

Doug embraced Paul, who by this time had tears running down his cheeks.

"No way are you leaving. I love you! If anyone needs to go it's this
prick who's married to my mother."

"Look, Doug, it's all a big mistake. I was just teasing the kid..."

"Give me a break! You can't explain it away. You've been screwing with
boys while pretending to be straight and living off my mom! I have proof
in your own words."

Jeremy's face burned red with rage as he picked up a piece of oak stock
from the workbench and lunged at Doug. Paul threw himself between them
taking the force of the blow. He crumpled to the floor bleeding profusely
from a gash on his scalp.

Jeremy ran from the scene while Doug called 911 on his cell phone.

Dakota was pulling up to the curb when his car was nearly clipped by
Jeremy's as the latter backed hastily out of the drive, tires laying rubber
as he fled.

"What the fu..!" Dakota screamed.

"Careful, little ears..."

"That idiot could have killed you and the kids! If I'd have been a few
feet closer, God only knows what might have happened. He should be locked
up!"

As they were extracting the children from their car seats, they heard cries
for help coming from the backyard.

"Take the kids in the house so they don't see whatever's happened in case
someone's hurt badly." Dakota shouted as he ran toward the source of the
cries.

He found his older brother sitting on the shop floor cradling the head of a
young man -- both of them covered with blood. (Ashley was standing
nearby wringing her hands and feeling helpless.) Dakota fell to his knees
immediately to examine the wound.

"It's not as bad as it looks," he said in his best bedside manner. "Head
wounds tend to bleed a lot because the blood vessels are close to the
surface. You apply pressure here while I get my bag from the car."

----------

"Oh God, my head hurts!" Paul moaned.

"Hang on, Baby, Dakota is going to get you fixed up. I'm so glad you're
conscious."

"Me too. Are you sure I didn't die and go to heaven? I'm looking up at an
angel with beautiful eyes, but a worried expression."

"Save that line for later," Doug quipped. "This is my amazing bro, Dakota.
He's gonna make you feel better."

"Hi Paul, I was hoping to meet you under better circumstances, but I'm
pleased to make your acquaintance. Are you allergic to any drugs --
codeine, morphine, etc?"

"No."

"Do you use any `recreational' drugs -- marijuana, ecstasy, uppers,
downers, anything?"

"No, never!"

"Okay, I didn't figure you did, but I don't want to give you anything that
might be affected, intensified, by other chemicals in your body."

Paul winced involuntarily as he felt a slight prick of the needle. A few
minutes later, he could feel the pain easing.

"Thanks! I don't feel like running a Marathon, but I've lost the urge to
have my head chopped off." Paul said, trying to make light of his
condition.

"Where the hell is that ambulance?" Doug demanded.

"You know it's an all volunteer crew out here. They were probably sitting
down to dinner when the call went out." Dakota suggested. "Ashley, why
don't you go out and keep watch for them?"

"Speaking of dinner, I'm sorry that I've spoiled it for everyone," Paul
moaned. "I hope you get to eat before it gets cold."

"Food is the furthest thing from my mind!" Doug assured him. "Anyway, it's
not your fault. You stepped in and saved me from being attacked. You
deserve a medal!"

"What happened?" Dakota wanted to know.

"Jeremy has been using Mom for her money. I confronted him about it and he
came after me with that sharp-cornered hunk of oak. Paul tried to protect
me, so he got the full force of the blow. Jeremy was like a man
possessed."

"He never was my favorite person," Dakota mused aloud. "He's always seemed
disingenuous. I could never exactly put my finger on it. I was going to
go over Mom's accounts with her while we're here."

"Where is that damned ambulance?" Doug said again.

The vehicle in question rolled into the drive seconds later. Two
attendants hurried into the shop, directed by Ashley who was happy to have
been of some use.

"You two will have to step away so we can examine him," the taller one
insisted.

"I've checked his injuries and don't think that they're serious. Here is
what I gave him for pain. He sat up briefly without becoming dizzy, but
I'd still like to have X-rays of the area to check for a fracture. I'll
monitor him overnight in case of any internal bleeding or swelling."

"And just who do you think you are giving orders to us, Son?"

"I'm Dr. Dakota Hartke and I specialized in head trauma during my
residency. If the nearest hospital isn't equipped to handle his injuries,
I want you to transport us to one that is."

"Uh, yes sir. Sorry sir. You look too young to be a real doctor."

"No offense taken, SON," Dakota replied grinning. "I'm only interested in
the welfare of my patient."

----------

After Paul had been examined, x-rayed, and stitched up, Doug and Dakota
brought him home. Gwen had insisted on holding dinner for her sons and
Paul. It wasn't much past the time she was shooting for anyway and the
oven had kept everything warm.

The men thanked her as they went to their rooms to find something to wear
that didn't have blood on it. Paul was pretty sure that his white shirt
was permanently ruined.

Before they ate, Gwen asked them to bow their heads and offered grace. She
said a word of thanks for Paul and asked for his continued healing, as well
as blessing the food.

Paul was quite surprised that his lover's mother could calmly host a dinner
after her husband had left in such a state. Why wasn't she crushed, or at
least visibly upset?

As if Gwen had read his mind, she brought the subject up after the children
had been excused from the table to play.

"Jeremy didn't turn out to be Lancelot in shining armor like he'd seemed to
be when we were dating. I've had a feeling for several months that he was
using me. I've kept very little money in the accounts with his name on
them. He evidently noticed because he's been unusually solicitous again of
late.

Earlier in the fall, he kept finding reasons to have to go to the city. I
suspect he has a lover there, but frankly, like Rhett Butler, I don't give
a damn!"

"Mom, I'm sorry I didn't give you enough credit for your ability to see
though him. I was going to go over your accounts while I'm home, but
you're way ahead of me." Dakota smiled.

"I won't pretend that I'm not hurt at all. What bothers me the most is
that Jeremy lashed out at Doug, and Paul had to be injured in the

process. I'm truly embarrassed and sorry, Paul!"

"It's not your fault." Paul responded. "You have done nothing but make me
feel like I'm part of a real family and I thank you for it. My own parents
threw me out this past summer after finding out that I'm gay. I've had a
rough time making a go of school, but your awesome son has helped me with
my finances and has invited me to share his house."

"That's my Doug," Gwen beamed proudly.

"I owe both of your sons. Dakota certainly calmed my fears and he insisted
on inspecting the sutures because he doesn't want me to have anymore
scarring than necessary."

"And what about me?" Ashley asked. "I made the French silk pie that you're
going to enjoy later. Doug said you have a thing for chocolate and I made
it especially to impress you. Of course that was before I knew that Doug
had impressed you more!"

"Okay, okay," Paul laughed. "I owe you too and I'll always love you --
like a sister, of course."

At Doug's insistence, Dakota and he cleared the table and loaded the
dishwasher. Paul wasn't allowed to help because of his injury. He sat
perched on a stool in the kitchen while they worked. He could have sat in
the family room with the ladies and the kids, but was afraid he might be
the subject of lots of questioning. He wasn't ready to explain how he and
Doug had met and he wasn't sure what story Doug might have used for cover.

Once the kitchen was cleaned up, Dakota headed for the family room to watch
football while Doug took Paul up to his room to lie down. Paul fell asleep
almost immediately as Doug held him in his arms. Doug soon joined him in
dreamland. When they awakened, it was nearly time to snack on leftovers.

----------

Paul felt pretty good the next morning and was sure that he'd not sustained
any permanent damage. Everyone in the house was still concerned about his
injury and wouldn't let him do anything strenuous.

Doug cooked breakfast to give his mother a break from the kitchen. Dakota
pitched in to help. Paul thought it was cool that the young doctor had
other talents besides his academic and medical abilities. He certainly
didn't act like a demigod as some doctors did. And if anyone had a right
to be arrogant, it would be someone with Dakota's intelligence and
abilities.

Dakota and his family left Friday night so they could travel while the kids
slept. Ashley, Paul, and Doug stayed until after supper on Saturday. All
of them were kind of hesitant to leave Gwen alone, but felt better after
she had had a locksmith come in on Saturday to change the locks, and had
changed the code on the alarm system.

Doug assumed that Jeremy, for all his faults, wasn't stupid enough to come
back where he'd be arrested for assault and would also run the risk of
having the family find out what he'd been doing on the side with other men.

----------

Doug drove the whole way home because he was still babying Paul. It wasn't
any stress for him to do an hour and a half stint behind the wheel. He'd
often drive five times that distance by himself.

When they got home, Doug was going to put Paul to bed early, but Paul had
other ideas. They'd not made love under Gwen's roof for fear of being
heard. Paul assumed that Doug would be as horny as he was and didn't want
to leave him unsatisfied.

Paul knew how to stifle Doug's half-hearted protests as he stimulated his
nipples on the way to the shower. Doug lacked the will power to resist
Paul's charms.

By the time they made their way to their shared bed, both were leaking
precum like a faulty faucet. Paul dived under the sheet to taste Doug's
sticky offering. He continued to bathe Doug's cock and balls encouraging
the production of more of the sweet fluid.

Eventually, Doug felt guilty about not returning the favor and asked Paul
to turn around in the 69 position. He too was rewarded by a flood of
natural lube.

They nursed a bit longer, backing off when either of them got too close.
Finally, they gave in to the awesome buildup of electricity and filled each
other's mouth with copious loads.

In the time of peaceful relaxation that followed their orgasms, they kissed
softly. After awhile, they fell asleep with Doug spooned against Paul's
back.
