Sunrise on the Edge of the High Desert

Chapter 17

contains man/man sex. If this bothers you, then it is time for you to leave
also. This story is fiction but some of it is based on real situations. The
names and places have been changed.

Jack spent the next week in the hospital with no physical improvement. Sam
and Adam spent every day at the hospital taking classes with Jack during
his physical therapy. They learned what kind of equipment was needed to
covert the house at the ranch into a handicapped friendly home.

The pool and hot tub were converted into therapy places for Jack. We had a
whirlpool bath installed. Sam and Adam would become the trainers. They
became very good and the doctors were satisfied that they would be able to
give Jack the best therapy.

The house and car were both equipped with the best equipment available. Sam
and Adam had decided that Jack would only have the best. They made
arrangements for the professional therapist to come to the ranch twice a
week.

As they were getting ready to leave the hospital, Linda, a woman from
Children Services came to see them at the hospital. Jack, Sam, and Adam
were surprised with what she had to say. She had a small girl age 5 and a
small boy age 4 with her. She wanted to talk to Adam alone but agreed that
Jack and Sam could listen in. She asked a nurse to look after the children
for a little while.

"Adam, what I am about to say will shock you very much. Sue and Jimmy are
here with me today because they have no other place to go. Their parents
have been arrested and will probably receive about 25 years of jail time. I
can¢t tell you who they are at the present time. They have requested that
you be asked to adopt the children. They have already signed all the
necessary paper work. You have already been checked out and I must say you
passed with flying colors. Yes, we know about your gay life style. We are
looking out the best interest of the children. If and when you take a
domestic partner, then he would also be given the chance to become an
adoptive parent, also. A judge is already to sign the papers making you
their legal guardian and in time you will be able to adopt them unless you
want to do it now. We can skip the guardian part if you wish. All we need
is a go ahead from you and a few legal papers to be signed. The children
have no other

 known living relatives. I have no available foster care homes in which to
place them. Adam, I need a decision today. I know this short notice but we
don¢t have the luxury of ample time. I can tell by the look on your face,
you want to discuss my proposal with your fiends. I will take the children
to the cafeteria and get some ice cream cones. We will be back in ½ hour.."

"Adam, don¢t even say it. I know what your answer is going to be. I will
not stand in your way. You must consider those two little kids. I know that
you would like to have kids of your own and now is your chance." Said
Jack..

"Jack, you know you are #1 in my life. I am not going to throw you out like
dirty dish water. I am in it for the long haul. What do you think, Sam?"
Asked Adam.

"What I think isn¢t a concern at the moment. I think this boils down to
your decision and yours alone. I will keep quite but I will let you know
later!" Responded Sam.

"Jack, I love you more than anything else. I can¢t see those poor little
kids getting tossed around. I know that you would love them and would make
a terrific father for them. Jack would you become my partner and together
we can give them a life."

Jack had tears rolling down his cheeks. "Adam, I love you and of course I
will become your partner! And I can¢t wait to take those kids home and
spoil them rotten." Declared Jack. "Adam, I may not have the use of my
legs, but I am not half a man. Together we can change the world!"

"Jack, let¢s go to the county clerks office and make our partnership
complete tomorrow. Would you like to use both our last names with a hyphen
between them."

"Absolutely Big guy, Absolutely!." Jack said kissing Adam.

"Congratulations, I told Linda this would be your decision. You see I have
already talked with her and I didn¢t want to influence you decision. You
see she has already checked Jack out also." Sam said with tears in his
eyes.. "Guys, I just knew this would be your decision. James is going to be
there tomorrow and we are going to become partners along with you two."

"You have to be kidding! All of you really had me figured out. Love all of
you" Adam said with a very shocked look on his face.

Linda came into the room with the kids. "From the looks of all the tears
and smiles, I think I know what you answer is. Am I correct, Adam?"

"YES! Jack and I are going to become domestic partners tomorrow. We both
want to be the kids dads. Now can you tell me how you knew about me." Asked
Adam.

"Sure I can. The father was a previous employee of Louie¢s. Louie had a
heart of purest gold and tried several times to help him. Louie met you and
the rest is history. The kids¢ parents did a lot of research on their own
and liked what they found. I talked with your family and drilled them
intensely. What really sold me on you was your nephew and niece. They were
the deciding factor for me. The judge will be at the clerk¢s office
tomorrow at 11:00. By noon, Sue and Jimmy will have new dads. What do you
think, kids?" Linda asked. Both kids ran to Adam and Jack and threw their
arms around Jack and Adam¢s necks.

"Linda, It appears that you have every thing all planned. I would venture
to guess that you even have a nanny all lined up!" Adam questioned.

"You have me there. I am sorry to say I don¢t. I will do some calling and
see if we can get several there for an interview. Kids are you ready to go
home with me now?" Asked Linda.

"No, we want to go home with our new daddies!" Said Sue.

"Adam, Jack?"

"Sam and I are staying in a motel. Then tomorrow we can go to the ranch and
see all the animals. We have horses, cows, chickens, dogs and more." Adam
replied.

"I will have to see if I can find some clothes for the kids. All they have
are the one¢s they are wearing." Linda stated.

"No, problem. I have to call my Mom and tell her the good news. I know the
whole family will be here tomorrow. I know that Grandma and Auntie will
want to go shopping." Replied Adam.

"I really must go. I have a ton of things to do before 11:00. So I will see
you all in the morning. Thanks Adam. You just got another jewel in your
crown. I understand it is getting full. Love you and all that you are
doing." Said Linda as she walked out the door.

"Jack and Adam, I have known about this deal for a week now. I was in on it
from the very beginning. James has a neighbor who recently lost her husband
and has no income. She would like to apply for the Nanny¢s job. I have met
her and like her very much. I could call her and have her come for an
interview, if you would like. I have her number." Remarked Sam

"Sam don¢t waste any time, get her on the phone. My head is
spinning. Everything is happening so fast. Jack are you sure you are ok
with all of this? Asked Adam. "Sam, can you catch Linda and tell her not to
bother about looking for a nanny. Thanks!"

"Adam, I have waited for this moment all my life. I fell in love with you
the very first day I met you. You have a soft spot in your heart and you
are always looking out for the other less fortunate. I have dreamed of
having you as my life partner. I never could rake up the nerve to ask
you. Now I get you and a ready made family all in one day. What more could
I ask for?" Said Jack crying.

"Don¢t be sad, Daddy!" Said Jimmy as he wiped away a tear.

"Honey, Daddy is not sad. He is just so happy that these are happy tears!"
said Jack.

"Are those happy tears, too? Papa, I love you." Sue asked Adam.

"Yes, Dear they are! I love you and Jimmy a whole bunch." Adam
acknowledged.. "Jack, did you hear what they called us. How does it feel,
Daddy? They have already figured out what they are going to call us. I am
so proud this moment that my head is probably so large that it won¢t fit
through that door."

"You both have happiness written all over you. Guys you just made a
marvelous decision and I know two little kids who are getting the best dads
in the whole world. Congratulations!"

"I have waited all my life to hear that. I must say it sounds GREAT!"
reacted Jack.

"Jack, it is getting late. I would like to spend the night here with you
but I don¢t think that we wouldn¢t all fit into that little bed of yours. I
want to just hold and kiss you all night."

"Adam, I feel the same way! I think just a quick hug and kiss will have to
do for now." Said Jack as he hugged and kissed Adam. Sam gave Jack one
also.. Sue and Jimmy climbed into his lap and kissed him good-night. Adam
and Jack both lost it again and started crying again.

"Good-night kids! See you in the morning" Declared Jack.
