Sunrise on the Edge of the High Desert

Chapter 18

also. This story is fiction but some of it is based on real situations. The
names and places have been changed.


We left Jack's room and headed for the motel. "Sam, there is a Wal-Mart up
ahead. Pull in there. We need to get the kids some pj's. You and I need
some also. I think our days of sleeping nude has come to an end. We also
need to get some car seats. You know how big the ticket is for not having
them. You really don't want to know since you are driving and the driver
pays all tickets." Laughed Adam.

We put a kid in a cart and we each pushed one them. Once in the store, we
headed for the men's department. We found some sleepers for us and got a
set for each of us. They were very sexy looking silk ones which had very
skimpy shorts and a sexy top.

"Sam, I can't wait to see you in this. I know I will like the effect it
will have on you."

" I was thinking the same thing about you." Grinned Sam. "Jack doesn't know
what he will be missing. I bet he will be glad to go home. Adam, do you
know if his paralysis has affected his sexual powers any?"

"I don't think so. He had a first class boner when we left."

"That is a good. Maybe there is hope for him yet!"

We headed for the kids department and got them all fitted for the night
plus a couple of outfits for them to wear tomorrow. We got the car seats
and headed out. We happened to pass the toy department and found some teddy
bears. No kid can sleep without his/her bear. Yes, we were just starting to
spoil ˇour' kids and we were going to enjoy every minute of it also!

Finally, we got to our motel. We requested a room with two beds and we were
able to trade our room for a new one. We finally got the kids ready for bed
and put them in one bed, kissed them good-night. .

We had barely gotten into bed, when Sue and Jimmy were standing next to the
our bed.

"Can we sleep with you Papa?" Asked Jimmy.

"Of course you can!" Adam replied. Sam and I moved apart and the kids
crawled between us along with their bears. Soon they were fast asleep.

Early in the morning, Jimmy was shaking me. "Papa, Papa wake up. I have to
pee pee!" Oh, the joys of fatherhood. I got one eye open and stumbled into
the bathroom with Jimmy. I helped him and when he was finished we went back
to bed. This time Sue was waking Sam up. Needless to say our night's sleep
had been cut short.

It seemed like we had just gotten back to sleep and both kids were awake
and were playing with their teddy bears. "You bears had better be quite! If
you wake Papa up he will be mad and will spank you" reprimanded Sue.

I grabbed Sue. "You got to close to Papa. Now you have to suffer." and I
started tickling her. Meanwhile, Sam had grabbed Jimmy and said "You got to
close to Uncle Sam. Now you have to suffer." and started tickling him.

"You got to close to Papa and now you are going to get it bad!" I started
tickling Sam in his very touchy spot. Soon we were all laughing so hard, I
thought that I was going to pee my pants right then and there. I jumped out
of bed and ran to the bathroom. Jimmy was right behind me and we used
facility together.  Sue called next. Sam had to wait and from the
expression on his face he was hurting. I walked up to him and asked, "Do
you want to play you got to close to Papa again."

"If you want to clean up my mess go ahead."

Jimmy started tickling Sam and I started laughing so hard that my sides
started to ache. Fortunately, Sue finished and Sam didn't waste anytime
getting into the bathroom.

I could see that being a father was going to be fun. I don't think I will
ever doubt my decision to accept the kids. My life was complete now. Sure
my love life would suffer but I had other things to replace the fun that I
had had. I probably would have to be a little more discrete but that would
be ok.

We got the kids dressed and asked them if they wanted to go out to
eat. They both started jumping up and down hollering "Yes". They wanted to
go to McDonalds and of course they won. It was hard getting the kids to
eat. They wanted to play on the playground. We told them they had to eat
first and the play. Now the food went down in a hurry.

After about 45 minutes in McDonalds, my cell phone rang. Jack was calling
to let us know that he had been released and that we could pick him
up. When we arrived and got Jack into the van, we had just enough time to
get to the county clerk's office.

My heart began pumping a hundred miles a minute. I could not believe that I
would finally have a life time partner and a ready made family. I whispered
into Jack's ear and he told me he felt the same way. Maybe we would
survive. I had my doubts. I looked at Sam and James and they had the same
kind of expression on their faces.

My family arrived and I think every person from the ranch and all the
neighbors was there also. Josh and Debbie rushed up to Jack and I and
started talking so fast and both at the same time, that we had to stop them
and tell them to slow down so we could understand them. Sue and Jimmy got
scared. Sue climbed into Jack's lap and I picked Jimmy up. They were both
hugging our necks and would not about to let go.

I squatted down next to Jack so that we were all on the same level. "Debbie
and Josh, Did Grandma tell you that Jack and I are going to become
partners, today?"

"Yes." This was all they could say but the smiled on their face told the
rest of the story.

"Listen up everyone! I would like to introduce the newest members of our
family. This young lady is our daughter, Sue and this big man is our son,
Jimmy." Debbie and Josh gave them a big hug and the ice was broken. Debbie
took Sue's hand and led her over to Grandma. Josh took Jimmy
over. Grandma's know just how to handle children and in no time at all the
kids were part of the family.

Linda came in and had the clerk take everyone to a large conference
room. Jack and I were asked to stay and complete some paper work. Sam and
James had already finished theirs and went with the group to the holding
area. She told me that Sue and Jimmy's parents were in the building and
would like to meet with us. This was a decision that was entirely up to us
and was not required for the adoption to continue.

I looked at Jack and he shook his head yes. We decided that we would meet
with the parents. We were taken to a separate room in which the parents
were being held. There were 3 guards in the room with them.

"Would it be possible for us to meet with these people alone?" Asked
Adam. The guards said yes and moved to the hall. "Linda, is it possible
that you not be here also? We would like to meet with these people and be
able to talk freely."

"It certainly would. I was just going to ask if you wanted me to stay."
Linda said as she was leaving the room.

We introduced ourselves. The woman was first to speak. "I know you must
have a million questions. I will give you some background information and
we can go from there. We worked on the ranch for Louie before he met
you. We fell in love with that man. Then you came on the scene. You had
many of the good qualities that Louie had. We got mixed up with drugs and
with the law. We knew that we were going to be arrested for some serious
crimes. We didn't want our children to go into the children services
program and be place in foster homes. Also, we wanted to be guaranteed that
our children would not be placed with family members. They had all
separated themselves from us and all they wanted were the children. We
found Linda and wanted to find out what our options were. She came up with
the plan to adopt the children out with all the loop holes plugged so that
the family could not touch the children."

The man who had been quite started to speak now. "Linda wanted to know if
we knew anyone who would take the children and someone to protect them from
the family. That is when Louie came to mind. We knew that he had been
killed and that You had inherited his ranch. Between Linda and us, we ran a
complete background check on you. We were extremely impressed with our
findings.. Then we found out that you and Jack were a pair but not domestic
partners.. We knew Jack when we were at the ranch. He was the type of man
who we wanted to a parent of our children."

Both parents had tears in their eyes. Even though they were in trouble with
the law, they still loved their children and wanted the best for them. "We
lost both sets of our parents and now we have no one except for some
cousins who under no circumstance are to have the children. The children
are never to know who they are. We have two big trunks filled with
pictures, family history, and memorabilia for the children. You can give
that to them when you think they are old enough. Linda has these trunks in
her possession and will turn them over to you after today's ceremonies."
Said the woman through her tears.

"We have here a cashiers check in Adam's name for a large amount of
money.. It is be used for the children and their care. Under no
circumstances are the relatives to get any part of this. My parents left
their estate to me. I have no brothers or sisters and except for some
greedy cousins on my wife's side, no one. For some reason, we decided not
to touch the money even though we were down and out and on drugs. Many
times there was no money for food and we turned to stealing or whatever to
provide for the children. We were faithful to our commitment and saved it
for the kids." He handed the check to Adam, who got a big shock looked on
his face. He couldn't believe the amount of the check. "Do you have any
questions?" He asked.

"What would you have done, if we refused to take the children?" Asked Adam
and Jack just nodded his head.

"We really didn't have any doubts and never considered the alternative. We
knew what kind of person you are and in our hearts, we felt that God had
sent you to us. I suppose that we would have disappeared from the face of
the earth, taking the children with us. I don't know what would have
happened for sure. It didn't happen, so we will never know for sure. One
thing you must promise us! Never mistreat our children and don't bring them
up to hate us. We love them dearly and want the best for them. Love them
for us!" Said the man hugging his wife and they both had tears running down
their cheeks.

"That is one promise, I know we can keep. We have already fallen in love
with those two. They are our own children now and has been accepted into
the family. They are here in the building, now. Would you like to see
them?" Asked Jack.

"We would love to see them again. However, I don't think we could go
through another separation. We had to go through that once. Now we have no
choice because we in police custody and have pleaded guilty to the
charges. We got our sentence reduced to 20 years. So we must refuse your
offer." Cried the woman.

"I understand completely. I promise that the children will never forget
you... We will bring them to see you when we can. As far as the check is
concerned, I will invest it for you. When you are released from prison, you
will need a nest egg to get you started in your new life. Jack and I won't
need it for the children's up-bringing. We are what you consider wealthy.
Money is no problem for us. Sue and Jimmy will be placed in our wills and
the they will be set for life." Said Adam. "We will protect the children
with our lives, if need be! I wish that we could have more time but it is
almost time for everything to take place. Would you like to sit in the back
and watch the proceeding? I am sure that we could get some disguises so the
children would recognize you."

"Thank you for all that you have done and will do! We would dearly love to
observe. Thank you again!"

Within the next hour, Sam/James and Adam/Jack became domestic
partners. Jack and Adam became the parents of Sue and Jimmy.

After the ceremonies were all over, James brought a woman over to Jack and
I. We both knew that she was hired by just looking at her. I looked at Jack
and he nodded his head yes.

"Guys, I would like to introduce a dear friend of mine, Judy Gray. Judy the
one in the wheel chair is Jack and the other ugly one is Adam. Judy is the
woman that I was telling you about."

"James, he is not ugly. In fact, I think he is rather cute." Judy came over
and offered her hand to Jack.

"Judy, we are huggers not shakers." Before he could say any more, Judy had
him in a big bear hug and planted a big kiss on his cheek.

"My turn, Jack Rabbit. You can't have this beautiful woman all to
yourself!" Judy gave Adam a big hug and a kiss.

"You see you big lug, he is beautiful. I am in love with him already."
Laughed Judy.

"Judy, we have decided that the job of nanny is yours if you want it. You
don't even have to apply. Let me call the kids over and introduce you and
then you can make up your mind. Sue! Jimmy would you come over here for a
minute, please." Requested Adam.

"Kids, this lady is Judy Gray. Daddy and I have offered her a job as your
nanny. Judy may I present the loves of our lives, Sue and Jimmy. Of course
Jimmy is the girl and Sue is the Boy."

"Papa, you have that all wrong. My name is not Jimmy. My name is Sue."

"Of course you are, Papa was just teasing."

"I know it, you silly old man!"  This caused everyone in the house to start
laughing.

"I can see that I am going to love working as your nanny. When can I start
to work?" Asked Judy.

"Didn't you know that you started 10 minutes ago? Replied Adam.

"Papa, I don't know what a nanny is. Is a nanny something like a mom?"
Asked Sue.

"That is exactly what a nanny is!"

"Then can we call her Mom? I like that better than Judy or Nanny!"
Responded Sue.

"You had better ask her if it is ok to call her Mom."

"Of course you can. I would love to be Mom!" Both kids rushed to her and
gave her a big bear hug which brought tears to her eyes.

"Are those happy tears like Papa and Daddy get?"

"You bet they are. I am so happy, I think that I will shed a lot of happy
tears! Said Judy.

"Can Jimmy and I cry happy tears too?" Now there was not a dry eye in the
house, even the Judge and Linda had tears.

"Look Jimmy, everyone has happy tears!" Sue said through her tears.

"Linda, I think we did a good deed today. Those two little ones were made
for this family." Said the Judge.

"Yes, I think their parents made a wise choice!" Said Linda.

Adam looked to the back of the room, and saw the kid's parents crying as
they left the room. Adam excused himself and pushed Jack out of the room.

"We want to thank you for finding us for the kids. We could not be happier
and we will give the children all the love and attention possible. Just
remember that you are their parents and always will be . Thank you for
sharing them with us." Said Adam.

"We hope that it was not to difficult for you in there. I know how you must
be feeling". Adam said.

"Thank you!" Said Jack.

"It was very, very hard to remain in the room but we knew we had too. It is
hard to give your children up but under the circumstances, It was the only
thing we could do. It makes me happy to know that the children will have
more love than they can handle. That crowd of people is full of love and it
filled the air. We can sleep nights knowing that our little kids are in
good hands. It is I that must say Thank You!" Said the father.

"Kiss them often for me and I too, say thank you!" said the mother crying.

The guards told Adam and Jack that they must be leaving now and they left
taking their prisoners with them.  Adam and Jack went back in the meeting
room and joined the happy celebration. Jack got everyone's attention and
told them that he had called Mark and had reserved the large room at the
restaurant for a celebration party. Everyone was invited and lunch was on
him. The people started filing out and even the Judge and Linda said they
would go also. Everyone knew where the restaurant was located so there was
a big long line of cars that looked like a parade. Someone started blowing
their horn and every one joined in. I was sure that we would all end up in
the poky but that was ok, we had the judge with us and I knew he wouldn't
throw the book at us.

On the way over, I told Jack, Sam and James to starting thinking of
somewhere to go for our ˇhoneymoon'. They all agreed that would be a grand
idea.

"What about the kids? We can't just go running off like we use to." Asked
Jack.

"No problem! We will just take them with us! Responded Adam.

Life at the ranch had changed. The resort development was in full swing.
Jack became the focal point for Sam and Adam. They spend two hours a day
working with him in the pool and hot tub. He was also get the help of a
professional twice a week.

Adam had now confined his love to just Jack, even though Jack had encourage
him to take on a lover. Adam maintained that he had made a commitment to
Jack and he was going to live by it regardless. Adam was satisfied with his
sex life with Jack even though Jack was not able perform by himself. Adam
became the active one and Jack reaped the benefits. Adam. too, received
emotional and sexual satisfaction. They spent a lot of time at the cabin.
Adam used an all terrain vehicle to take Jack from one place to another.
They made the trip up the hill to watch the sunset and stop on the way back
down for a dip in the hot springs.

Of course they had the kids with them all the time and had formed a very
strong bond with them. Jack and Adam grew closer together and their love
for each other was noticeable by all those around them. They had a glow
about them that would melt even the coldest heart. Life was good!
