Chapter 20
Jack was at the airport to pick Adam and Louie up. He told them that he
was the only one free and had to come himself. What he didn't tell them
that there was a huge welcome home party waiting to get underway at the
ranch. Adam and Louie were in for a big surprise! Jack had taken the cars
up the cabin road so they were out of sight and had shuttled everyone
back to the ranch. Tables had been set up behind the ranch in the large
recreation room near the pool. Jack said he had to call Mark and let him
know that Adam and Louie were almost home. Of course he was talking to

They parked in front of the house, and about 75 people came around the

The doctor and coroner came out and said the sheriff and his men could go

could come in at 1:00 and sign the hard copy. The coroner would hold an
inquest later in the afternoon. He said all of this was very hard on the
family but it was something that had to be done according to the law.
Jack made a few phone calls to friends in the area and asked them to
start calling fiends to let them know about Louie. Gene called Dan in
Tracy and let him know. Gene said that she had to get back and let the
family know. This was not going to be an easy job. Debbie and Josh were
going to want to come back out to see Uncle Adam. She would have to
convince them that had to wait.
Jack got Adam upstairs and got him stripped and into bed. He gave him a
sleeping pill and was getting ready to leave when Adam said, "Jack will

Chapter 21
Adam and Jack awoke the next morning and were lying there in bed just
holding each other. They heard a car drive up and Adam looked out the
window. "Jack get some shorts on. You have about 30 seconds and the kids
will come busting through the door. We had better not be nude or we will
never hear the end of this." They both barely made it and had crawled
back in bed when Debbie and Josh came running through the door crying.
"Come here you two and get in bed with us. Shoes and all!." They didn't
hesitate and jumped in the bed. Jack took Josh and started hugging him
and Adam was hugging Debbie. This was what the kids needed. They stopped
crying and wanted to go see Grandpa Louie.
"I don't think that is a good idea." said Jack.
"We know that Grandpa Louie was shot and he died. We want to go tell him
good bye and that we will sing for him like we did for Joe." said Debbie.
Jack and I both started crying. This was too much. We need to let go of
some of the energy and sadness built up in both of us. We both really let

felt better now. Those two kids knew exactly what we needed. They

We spent the day making final arrangements, talking with the sheriff and
going to the coroner's inquest. He ruled that this was a murder by
Adam's ex and self defense by Louie. Case was closed since no one else
was involved in the killings.
Louie would be cremated and his ashes scattered on the hill with Joe and
Louie's wife. There would be a memorial service in 5 days which would
give out-of -town guest a chance to get there.
There would be large pot-luck following the services which would be held
on the ranch. A woman from the church was going to organized every thing.
Adam and family were going to sing and do the music part of the service.
Louie loved what they did for Joe and they would so some of the same
songs but some of Louie's favorites as well. Adam appreciated that
people were coming forward to help. It made him feel how much Louie had
meant to the community. He was going to try to live up to the high
standards Louie had established.
He was going to need a lot of help but Jack said he would be there.
That night Adam asked Jack if he would spend the night in the cabin with
him. He wanted to be close to Louie and knew that his presence could be
felt there. Jack said that he would be happy to spend the night but no

The next morning, they went to the hot springs sat holding each other and
crying. This was a very emotional undertaking but something they both

the morgue."

world. He gave his life for you. You have to believe that you are not
responsible. There is nothing you could have done to stop what happened.
The man who is responsible for this tragedy is dead with a pitchfork
sticking in his chest. If Louie had not thrown the pitchfork when he did
we all would be dead now. Louie, you, and me! You and I are alive now
because of Louie being a hero! As much as I hate to think about what
happened to Louie, I have to thank him for giving us life. Adam is any of
this making any sense to you."
"Jack, Louie's whole life was one of giving. The more he gave the more
he was pleased with himself. Everyone came first. Louie gave me or us the

Jack called the undertaker on his cell and made arrangements for him to

say also. Let's not wait until tomorrow to go to Bend. I would like to
go tonight."
Now the trip to the top became much easier. However, it was probably the
hardest thing I will ever have to do. Jack and I both just stood there
looking over Louie's valley. We both turned to leave and said "Thank

It is a good thing we went in. Louie was scheduled to be cremated the
first thing in the morning. Jack and I went into the room together. We
were holding each other up. I leaned over and held Louie for a long time
and then kissed him, told him I love you, said goodby and Thank You! Jack
did the same.
I know Louie was looking down and smiling. We had accepted his gift. I
fell to the floor sobbing. I was still having trouble giving Louie up.
Jack reached down and took my hand. He lifted me up and pulled me to his
chest. He just stood there holding me very tight.
"Jack, please take me home now! I am ready now. All Louie ever wanted was
Thank you! I have accepted his gift and he is happy now and free. I will
never forget his love for me and all he had done. I was near the end of
my life and no hope for the future when he found me. Through his tender
love and caring he put a new meaning of life in me. He will always remain
in my heart and my memory. These tear are for the happiness I found with

"It is very late. Let's get a motel and go home tomorrow."

And so the Saga of Louie and Adam comes to an end. The sun has set now
for Louie. He will watch the sunsets holding his wife's hand on one side
and Joe's hand on the other. There will be a sunrise for Adam which will
