The Deserted Island Vacation

Forward

About 2 months before I graduated from the university, I was
interviewed and offered a job. I was going to received degree in
marketing, and the job was with a major international company, so I
accepted. I would be working in their Los Angeles headquarters. There was a
training session that was held in Chicago. The company had started in
Chicago many years ago, but had moved to Los Angeles. However, the HR
division had remained in Chicago so that they could still have a presence
there and it would be convenient for training purposes. By the way, my name
is Jonathan Graham.

The training was to take place at the Conrad Hilton Hotel. I
arrived on Sunday night and I must have been the first to arrive, because
when I checked in I was assigned to a room with two beds, but there was no
one else there. That soon changed and I met my roommate Scott Jennings. Of
course we talked and I told whim where I would be working and he said that
he would be in the Atlanta office and be working in advertising.

We were on our lone until 6:00pm when we met the other new
employees in the Lake Michigan Room. There were snacks and soft drinks
available and we met and were introduced to the others. First of all there
were Mrs. Janice Taylor the head of HR and her assistant, Mr. Tim
Wright. The other new employees were Charles Brennan, Donald Munday and
Lois, Carol, Janet, Barbara, Terri, Sara, Leslie, and Mary. (Their last
names are not important, as they do not really have a part in this
adventure. At 7:00pm we all sat down to a dinner and received our packet of
information and were briefly told what would be happen the next 5 days.

After the dinner we were on our own. Don suggested that we have a
drink in the bar and all agreed. "Since they only served soft drinks at the
cocktail party, I guess that they do approve of alcohol," said Don. Well
we agreed and enjoyed a cocktail. Afterwards we headed up to our rooms and
found out that Chuck and Don were in the room next to ours. We called down
to the bell captain and had him open the door adjoining our rooms. That
made communication easier. We got ready for bed.

Scott suggested that we work out a schedule for showering and
shaving so that we don't get into each other's way in the morning. I said
that I was an early raiser and was usually up by 6:00. So I would get into
the bathroom early and he would have it whenever he got up. We then checked
with the guy's next-door and agreed to head down for breakfast at
8:00am. With that we hit the bed.

The next 5 days went well. No trouble using the bathroom, with the
adjoining door open, we got use to seeing each other. At night we went to
some of the clubs around town. We had a great time and by the time the week
was over, we had become best friends. Before we left to return to our new
jobs, we agreed that we should stay in touch with each other and even
agreed to vacation together next year. Now we were able to do that because
we worked in different locations and in different divisions. We decided
that we should vacation at the same time as when we met. We shook hands and
boarded our planes and went to our new jobs.
