The nature of a truly desperate heart - Chapter 9

Tommy

After a few days we received our test results, we were both clean so we
celebrated by making love to each other with no condoms. The difference in
the feelings were amazing, the first few times we couldn't hold for much
time, every time we made love we could hold for a few more minutes, but it
didn't matter, we loved each other, we were happy.

The next two months nothing major happened, the bar was still having a huge
success, Matt had made a few more cookouts with his cook and a few other
contestants that signed up on the bar, the cookouts were always on
Saturdays, and more than once the bar was figured in the newspaper.

My parents came for a visit, and my mom, of course, started to give me a
hard time.

"Thomas, are we staying in the master bedroom?"

"Why are you asking that?"

"The closet is bare of clothes, so I'm assuming you're not living here full
time."

"I do spend most of my time with Matt, but we haven't talked about living
together."

It was true, most of the days I came from the office, changed clothes and
went to the bar, so my suits stayed in Matt's apartment. We closed the bar
and went to bed together, so I just stayed with him, but we haven't
discussed living arrangements.

"Sure, you can stay in the master bedroom, I was going to stay downstairs
this weekend, anyways. Now, unpack and meet us downstairs for lunch. I
don't have any groceries up here."

My parents would be staying for two weeks, so I left them unpacking and
went back to Matt's apartment to talk to him.

"Matt, my mom brought to my attention that I'm not keeping much clothes,
nor groceries, upstairs, the clothes I do have upstairs are things that I
mostly don't use."

"I noticed my closet was getting smaller, but I didn't know why, guess that
explains it."

"Matt, are we living together?"

"Tommy, I haven't thought about that, but seems to me that we are. Do you
not want it? If that's what you want I can help you take your clothes
upstairs, but I really would like for you to just live with me,
permanently."

"It makes sense that we live together, since we spend most of the time
together anyway."

"Then is settled, we change nothing, except the rest of your clothing."

With that we started kissing again, my parents chose that moment to come
in, and my mom, being who she is, started on us.

"So, boys, we can't leave you alone for a few minutes you start the kissing
fest."

"Mom..."

"Thomas, I'm not trying to embarrass you, just joking a bit."

"Fine, have a seat, we'll serve lunch."

After we were seated and started to eat, my parents looked at us then at
each other, then at us again. My dad dropped the bomb.

"Boys, what would you think about us moving to the city?"

"Dad, what are you talking about?"

"Well, your mom is retired, and I want to follow, since your sister is
getting married we talked about selling the big house and move down here
with you boys."

"I would like that Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, maybe you could help around the
bar, too, since you both know the business."

"Matthew, we talked about the Mr. and Mrs. thing. It's mom and dad, and
don't you forget it. Now, we need your help to find a place to live."

"Since me and Tommy are practically living together, why don't you stay
with the apartment upstairs, we can have the same deal, you'll pay bills
and a third of the maid's salary, no rent."

"Mom and Dad, I really like Matt's idea, why don't you think about it and
we'll talk about it later in the week. We need to go to the bar."

My parents went back upstairs, and me and Matt went to the bar, we needed
to open for the day.

"Matt, you really meant it, didn't you?"

"What?"

"Offering my parents the apartment, meaning I will move in with you
permanently."

"Yes, I mean it, I like your parents, plus we would be sharing expenses, so
we would be able to save for our honeymoon, and I think both mom and dad
will be great assets in the business."

"I love you, Matt, but what do you mean by honeymoon?"

"And I love you, Thomas. And I was thinking about taking a few days off and
go away for a bit, I was gonna keep the bar closed, but if your parents
accept my proposal, maybe they'll take care of the bar for me."

"Oh, ok. That seems like a good plan."

For a moment I thought Matt was thinking about getting married, I was
disappointed when he said it would be a vacation, but then remembered we
were together for less than three months, so it was too soon to talk about
marriage, although we had just decided to live together. I shrugged it off
and kept working, I also had to prepare things since we were having a small
celebration for the parent's anniversary of marriage. Although my sister
wasn't happy about it, she was coming to the celebration, as were a few
other family members, Joe and Tessa, and Joe's parents. The celebration
would take place on the bar on Sunday, and it would be a surprise for them.

The day progressed nicely until my sister arrived. She and her fiance would
be staying in the guest bedroom in the apartment upstairs, she was bitching
about everything, the bar was too full, the building didn't have elevator,
the parking was public. Finally dad had enough.

"Samantha, that is enough, if you don't like it you can go to a hotel, but
you better be ready to pay for yourself, because me and your mother will
not pay."

"But daddy, I can't stay in a dump like this, what will people say?"

"This building has more conditions and amenities than a hotel, your brother
and boyfriend, offered you a room and are asking for nothing in return,
either you accept, or go to a hotel, I repeat, your mother and I will not
pay for the hotel. And if you decide to stay, you better apologize for the
attitude."

I was so sad, I couldn't believe my sister was acting like this, I just
wanted her to be happy for me, and here she was, having a fit because this
wasn't a five star hotel.

Matt

I couldn't believe I had spilled about my plans for honeymoon, I wanted to
ask him to marry me, but it was supposed to be a surprise. I was glad I
could recover and make it seem that I just wanted vacation time. I saw
disappointment enter Tommy's eyes, which made me sad, because I hated to
disappoint him, but happy, because it meant he wanted to marry me.

The day followed the normal routine, but everything went sour when Tommy's
sister, Samantha arrived with her fiance, Daniel. She was complaining about
everything. Tommy was actually sad about it. I could understand that, she
reminded me of my family, she didn't accept us, and made sure we knew it,
and she had the superior attitude I hated so much, but I had decided to
ignore, just like I did with my own family.

"I'll move the bar's van and you can park in the private parking."

"You will do no such thing, Matt." said mom. "Samantha is a guest, and she
will act as such."

"Ok, mom."

When Samantha heard that she looked at me with such anger, I actually
thought she was going to hit me.

"She's not your mom, so don't call her that."

"Samantha, I gave him permission to call me mom, and your dad gave Matt
permission to call him dad, so you have nothing to say about that, is this
understood?"

"Mother, you can't be serious. Wasn't one fag son enough, you had to adopt
another one?"

"Samantha, such language is not accepted here, Matt is letting you stay in
his home, so the least you can do is be respectful."

"What? I thought I was staying in Tommy's apartment."

"Matt owns the all building, and the apartment is not officially rented, so
it's still Matt's. Now, either you shut up and be grateful, or you can go
to the hotel, just as your father suggested."

"Fine. Where's this room I'll stay in?"

After they departed I looked at Tommy and he had tears in his eyes, I
slowly kissed him.

"It's ok honey, she'll come to her senses soon."

"No, she won't, just like your family didn't, but it's ok, I have all that
I need, I have you, my parents, Joe, Tessa and Mitch. I don't need anything
else. I love you."

"I love you too. You stay here and help your parents if needed, I'll be at
the bar."

I kissed him a bit more and left to the bar, since I had only came upstairs
to greet the guests. The bar was full, but my staff was handling it
nicely. At midnight I closed and went upstairs, Tommy and the parents were
waiting for me, dad decided to talk for the group.

"Matt, we're sorry about what happened, we don't know where we went wrong
with Sam, she was such a great child, I don't know what happened. We will
understand and support you if you don't want to let her stay."

"Dad, she is your daughter and Tommy's sister, I will never not allow her
to stay here. I would like her to be nicer to her brother, but I don't
think anyone can make her. And I'm sure it's not your fault she turned the
way she did. Dad, I would like to talk to you in private, can you come with
me to the bar."

"Sure, let's go."

Once in the bar I was actually nervous, I never thought that I would be
nervous when asking someone if I could marry his son, I knew this was
something only done for the daughters, but I wanted to be sure his dad was
ok with this.

"Mr. Campbell, I called you here, because I want to talk to you about
something. I want to marry your son."

"Matt, are you asking me my permission to marry my son?"

"I am, sir."

He started laughing, I was actually afraid of his answer, I never saw
someone laughing so hard. He finally was able to stop laughing and talked.

"Permission granted. You know, Daniel should be the one asking me this
question, yet he never talked to me, I even think he's afraid to look in my
direction. Don't know why, though, I'm a puppy."

"Dad, with all due respect, if you're a puppy, it's a genetic modified one,
you could break both his arms with only a look."

We were both laughing, we finally calmed down enough to go back to the
theme in hand.

"Can I ask you to not tell your wife about this? I want to pop the question
and surprise Tommy. I love mom, but he would know something was up by
looking at her."

"You got that right, she would be too excited to hold on to the
surprise. When are you doing it?"

"Tomorrow."

We went back upstairs, Tommy was waiting for us, but mom had already went
to the apartment, dad followed. We went to take a shower, together, of
course. We were washing each other and kissing, but Tommy stopped the kiss,
I knew he was curious about the talk.

"Matt, what were you talking to my dad?"

"Bar stuff. I was asking his opinion in a few appliances."

"Oh, ok. Nice. Let's go to bed, I'm exhausted."

"Me too. Tommy, I love you."

"I love you too, Matt."

As always, we went to bed kissing, none of us wanted to have sex, we were
contented by just kissing and holding each other, we were now officially
living together and were happy about it. I was nervous about proposing, but
it was a good nervous. I knew he wouldn't say no, and I had my
father-in-law support, so I was happy.

The next day, since we hadn't had time to go grocery shopping, Tommy's
parents, sister and brother-in-law came to breakfast at our apartment. I
looked at Samantha and knew she wanted to complain, but a look from her
father was all it took to make her stay quiet.

Tommy and I excused ourselves, so we could prepare things for the luncheon
that would be the celebration, while everyone stayed talking and watching
the news on TV. It was noon when the rest of the guest started arriving at
the bar. At 1pm we called Tommy's parents to the bar.
