Because they were collecting Josh's new car, they travelled by train down
to Cornwall, although Luke didn't really want to travel that far in his car
in any event. It took them three and a half hours to get there from

and kissed Luke and they made their way inside for Luke to be introduced to
Pam.

Josh noticed immediately that his mum seemed so much happier and brighter
than when he had last seen her. No doubt the country air had something to
do with that but being away from his father was undoubtedly the real

Luke was made to feel very welcome by everyone and very much part of the
family. He and Josh chuckled when they found the bedroom they were using
contained two single beds that had been pushed together and made into a
double. They wondered who had organised that but either way it was very

"I dare say you want to see your new car" John said once they'd settled
themselves in.

Josh beamed and said he'd love to. John then led him with Luke following on
behind to a large garage behind the farmhouse. Inside was the Peugeot

from one window to the other ending in a large bow on the roof.

"Happy birthday Josh" John said smiling as he watched Josh's face light up.

there knowing that it was his was unbelievable.

"Thank you so much" Josh eventually managed to say as he gave John a big

John then explained that it had been fully serviced and four new tyres had
been fitted so it was in a good state of repair. He also pointed out that
it had not got many miles on the clock since it had been owned by someone
he knew who only used it as a run about locally. Owing to illness they were
no longer able to use it, hence the reason why he had managed to buy it at
a knock down price.

John opened the driver's door and guided Josh to get inside. Having just

"This is all very generous of you and Pam" Luke finally said seeing that

close to our hearts and we know how much he supported his mum at home
throughout the terrible time she and he had with his father".

John then turned away from Josh who was now busy looking at things inside
the car and flipping through the instruction manual.

"How did Josh take his father's death?" John said quietly to Luke.

"He felt relieved"

John just nodded and looked back towards Josh.

"So, are you going to take Luke out to try this new motor of yours?"

Josh grinned and immediately turned the ignition key. The engine sprang
into life and John closed the driver's door whilst Luke climbed in the
other side.

"You going to join us?" Josh called out the window.

"No, quite sure Luke will make sure you get back safely; I suggest you
drive into the village and back again to start with; you can go out again
later if you want after lunch" John called back as Josh started reversing
out of the garage.

John watched them go and was satisfied that Josh clearly knew how to drive
and seemed very comfortable with the car.

"I still can't believe all this" Josh was saying as they made their way
down the lane towards the village.

The next day, Luke and Josh went out again in the car to give Josh some
more practice and to get used to it before they did the long journey home

When Luke told his mother about the trip away she reminded him that she too
was away for that weekend at yet another conference down in Bristol.

Luke wasn't too sure about that but felt he had to suggest it to
