From the desk of:
Edward R. Tanner
Security Chief
McAdams Corp.
This summary of the incident at the dedication ceremony of the new McAdams
Print Processing Plant on 08 July, is compiled from first hand observations
made and information gained after the event from various sources and
witnesses.
We have documented this event for historical reference and the contents is
not to be discussed with anyone other than PROJECT GUARDIAN members.
Preface
The official opening of the Plant had been announced and scheduled for over
a month. It was considered a major community event, showing McAdams
Corp.'s faith in the economic stability and growth potential of the region.
The Plant represented the addition of 650 new jobs to the area and was
estimated to be responsible for $300 million dollars in sub-industry
growth.
The opening ceremony was to be attended by the Mayor and 8 of the 12 City
Councilors, representing the City. Mr. Benton McAdams, his son Jamie,
Mr. Ted Tanner, his son Kevin and Mr. Ralph Sussex, the new Plant Manager,
representing McAdams Corp.
The occasion was seen as a low security risk, with members of the City
Police Force and McAdams Security sharing responsibility for coverage.
City Police assigned 4 Patrolmen for crowd control and McAdams
Corp. supplied 10 Security Officers for general surveillance and patrol,
plus personal protection for Mr. McAdams and his son.
Speculative Report
All the boys had been asked if they wanted to attend the Plant dedication.
None had been very interested, so Dean specifically asked Jamie to come and
I asked Kevin. We felt it important the family be adequately represented.
I realize now Denny had been reticent about the whole event offering no
opinion or commentary of any kind. His lack of conversation should have
alerted me to the fact something was going on.
The morning of the 8th, Dean and I were awake and talking when my little
man crawled into our bed without any comment. Matthew was the chatterbox
of the day and commenced warming his cold feet on his Uncle Dean just as he
had every morning since his arrival. Instead of laying in my arms with his
back to me, Denny turned over and held me, with his head pressed firmly
against my chest. As I reflect back now, he had not done that since he was
forced into telling me about putting what is commonly referred to in the
family as "the curse" on Gus, which assisted Gus in stopping to tell lies.
He lay quietly and seemed to listen to my heart beat and I remember
thinking at the time he might be a little under the weather.
We all had breakfast together that morning as we usually do, but Denny was
not eating much and I again wondered if he was feeling ill. I mentioned it
to Mr. Chen, he nodded and said he would keep a close watch on him. The
others were talking about the dedication ceremony and the most interest
seemed to be in whether or not there would be sandwiches and desserts
served. A cheer was raised by the two going when Dean confirmed there
would be and the others were taunted about their former hesitance in going.
I also now reflect Denny had been watching Dale very carefully throughout
breakfast and Dale had given him a couple glances as well.
The younger boys were spending their normal morning with Tim working on
their lessons. Dale, Jason, Digger and Anson were all going with us. Dale
was responsible for the security detail as the Sr. Officer. He was in fact
responsible for security at any activity in which Dean was involved. He
had opted today to take his own team along, knowing the estate was secure
with Brian and Mr. Chen being present with the other security staff.
We left the `castle' about 10 o'clock for an 11 o'clock ceremony. Denny
received permission from Tim to come down to see us off. He gave each of
us a big hug, including Kevin and Jamie. When he hugged Dale, he spoke to
him so quietly none of us could tell what he had said. I asked Dale in the
car if Denny was okay and Dale said something about him worrying too much.
Another clue I should have picked up on.
I am informed when we left, instead of returning to Tim, Denny went to find
Mr. Chen. Chen tells me Denny told him there was going to be a problem and
there were certain things which needed to be arranged. Being a man of
wisdom, Chen realized Denny was speaking to him as a Guardian and did not
question. He went with Denny to the boy's room and listened to the
instructions he was given. He then went and made the arrangements Denny
had requested. Denny returned to the classroom.
"Tim." he said. "I need you to listen to me very carefully." The man
immediately knew Denny was telling him something important.
"All right, Denny." Tim acknowledged.
"This day at noon, the Guardians are going to fulfill our prophesy and
perform an act never before granted to man." the boy told him. "Davey is
going to come with me now and you are going to look after Gus and Matthew.
Lenny, Todd and Brendan were driven into town this morning. They will be
back for lunch. When they return, you must take charge of them and keep
them with you until Dad or Uncle Dean come to you. I would suggest you
call Bill, the Stable Manager and take them riding this afternoon. He will
help you."
"Is it going to happen ?" Davey asked. Denny nodded.
"We have to go and get Brian." Denny informed Davey.
By the time this was all happening we were on a platform in front of the
new Plant with the other dignitaries. The Mayor, Dean and Jamie had front
row seats while Kevin and I sat behind them with the City Councilors. Dale
and Jason were on the platform with us while Digger and Anson covered the
side aisles. There was a fair crowd of about 150 people in the audience.
The Mayor's greeting was a little long and you could see people start to
fidget. A short round of applause followed his closing, I think in
gratitude for him ending. Dean stepped up to the microphone and began his
short address, thanking the city officials and renewing the commitment of
McAdams Corp. to the economic growth of the community.
A man on the inside aisle of the audience stood during the applause and
headed toward the platform.
"You." he screamed. "You are the one. You ruined my life. It's your
fault." It was Eduardo, Debra's soon to be ex-husband. While screaming he
withdrew his hand from his coat pocket holding a gun which he aimed not at
Dean, but at Jamie.
Jason had begun moving toward Dean as soon as the man had started up the
aisle. He was first to spot what was happening and yelled "GUN", just as
he grabbed Dean, pushing him to the floor and covering him. I was occupied
pushing Kevin to the floor under me. When I looked up, I saw Jamie half
rising from his seat in reaction to the movement around him. Dale's body
flew in the air over me reaching for Jamie as I heard the sound of the gun
fire once. I heard a second shot fired as I saw Jamie knocked flat on his
back with Dale on top of him. When I looked over, Eduardo was falling to
the ground and Anson stood firmly in front of the platform with his freshly
fired gun extended in his hands.
The whole scene was in chaos. People were screaming and moving away from
the platform and the shooters.
"Are you all right ?" I asked Kevin, lifting off him and feeling his arms
and legs.
"I'm okay, Dad." he said. "Just scared as hell."
"Report." I yelled, wondering why Dale hadn't.
"Two clear." Jason yelled. I knew that Dean was safe.
"Three clear." Anson yelled. I knew that he was uninjured.
"Four clear." Digger yelled. That meant he too was okay.
"Help." Jamie yelled. "Dale's not moving." Jason and I both scrambled
over to where Dale lay on top of Jamie. It only took one glance to know.
Dale was dead. The bullet aimed at Jamie had caught him in the back of the
head. I'm sure he didn't even know he'd saved Jamie. I looked out to the
audience and the police had taken custody of Eduardo, who appeared only
wounded in the shoulder.
"Oh no." Jason yelled. "No, no, no, no." The full impact of the
situation had hit him. Digger reached him and pulled him away as I lifted
Dale off Jamie. Kevin was there to help Jamie up.
"Dad." Kevin spoke to me. "Did Denny tell you what to do about this ?" I
just looked at him blankly. He looked at Jamie.
"Me." Jason said. "Dale told me. If anything happened to him, I was to
go to Denny and do exactly what he told me." He looked at me. I pulled
out my cell phone and called the Security Office. They forwarded me to
Brian. As soon as Brian heard my voice he told me he already knew, Denny
had told him and they were on their way. He put Denny on the line.
"Dad." he said. "Don't let anyone take him anywhere. Davey and I are
coming. Tell the others to get ready." I relayed his words to everyone.
"How could this happen ?" I asked to no one in particular.
"This was destined." Jamie answered. "The Prophesy forecast this day. He
is the Protector and he accepted the eventuality of this day when he
accepted his role."
"I don't understand." Dean said. "How was this forecast and how did Dale
accept it."
"The day we asked Dale to be the Protector," Kevin replied. "we told him
there were three things he needed to know. The first was I had uncovered
two translation errors in the Prophesy. The section that reads: `the
Father will meet a fatal end.', should say: `the Protector will meet a
fatal end.', and also the line reading: `He will be held first and
forever.', should read: "He will be the first returned from the forever.".
"The second thing we told him was Prophesy would be fulfill and he would
die." Jamie said.
"He knew he would die ?" Jason asked. "How could he do that ? How could
he leave me ?" Jason began to weep and Anson tried as best he could to
comfort him.
"Jason," Jamie said to him ever so softly, "Dale was not prepared to leave
you. He knew the rest of Prophesy and he trusted in it and in us."
The third thing he had to know was we would bring him back, but in so doing
we would never again be able to heal him." Kevin continued. "By being the
Protector and fulfilling Prophesy, he gave up our being able to save him at
a later time if it became necessary."
"He did not know when and where," a voice behind us stated, "until I told
him yesterday." We turned and Denny stood there with Davey and Brian
flanking him. Kevin and Jamie almost automatically moved over behind him.
"Dad, Uncle Dean, we need to speak to you."
Just then a police officer came up to the stage to tell us the Coroner had
arrived to make his inspection. Denny nodded to me and the Medical
Examiner came over and examined Dale's body. He advised Dad he would need
information to issue a Death Certificate. Dad had Jason talk to him with
Digger's help. While they were busy with those details the boys talked to
us.
"When we told you how we seem to heal injury and sickness with time
phasing, we told you how energy draining to our life force it could be. We
did not know this part of the Prophesy would come before we were fully
grown, so our power is not fully developed. This could take a great amount
of our life force. There is a very small chance some or all of us will be
injured. We are about to pool our gifts to perform what the Prophesy calls
"a gift never before allowed to man.". Denny explained.
"We owe this to Dale, no matter what the risk." Jamie continued. "As our
Protector, he has placed his trust in us."
"Let me get this straight." Dean said. "You four boys are going to bring
Dale back to life and doing this may hurt all four of you. Can this kill
you ?"
"We are very unlikely to die from this, Uncle Dean." Kevin assured him.
"We just don't know how much of our energy it will take."
"No." Dean said. "You can't do this. This is an unreasonable risk to
each of you. I vote `No'. Ted, tell them."
"Dean," I stated. "I spent almost a year hiding part of the Prophesy from
you which turns out not to even be about you. I promised I would support
them and I told Denny I trusted him."
"I trust him too" Dean answered. "But they are still children."
"No. Dean." I responded. "Right now they are the Guardians."
"Dad." Jamie said. "Remember this happened while Dale was saving my life.
Without his trust in us, it could be me in his place. Now we need your
trust." Dean paused and looked at me, then he nodded his head.
"Turn Dale on his back and lay him flat." Denny instructed. Jason and
Anson moved immediately to do as instructed. "Once we start, no one is to
interrupt us."
The boys stood two on each side of Dale. They reached across to each
other, joining their outside hand to the person directly across from them
and their inside hand to the person across from them at an angle. Denny
instructed us all to form a circle around them and join hands, moving back
from them as far as our joined hands would allow. The six of us did as he
instructed. As the boys began to concentrate we saw Dale's body slowly
rise off the platform and come to a position just below their joined hands.
I noticed the Police Officers and the Coroner were becoming curious about
what was happening and started walking toward us. Some people still
outside the police perimeter also were taking notice. I could see the
Mayor and a couple Council Members were headed over to us as well.
I looked back and Dale's body was starting to glow. It was surrounded by a
reddish light which seemed to vibrate as it glowed and dimmed. I could
also see the boy's hands had yellow light surrounding them. The glow
around the boy's hands brightened and started up their arms and continued
until their entire bodies were encased in it. The glow around Dale was
brightening and turning from red to pink.
"Don't let them get closer than six feet." Denny's voice sounded in my
head. I looked at Dean and he nodded. I knew he heard him also. The
light around the boys kept getting brighter and brighter.
"Turn outward." I said. "Don't let anyone get too close. Warn them and
use your weapons to back them off if you have to." Everyone turned around
180 degrees and faced outward from the boys. I could tell the light from
the boys was continuing to intensify. It was as if I could feel it as it
grew. I could feel the hair on my neck standing up as it does around an
intense electrical field. Some of the people had reached the edges of the
platform.
"Don't come any closer and be quiet." I called out. Oddly enough, they
listened and didn't touch the stage. I tried to look behind me, but the
radiance had become so intense it hurt my eyes. Most of the people
watching had shielded their eyes. The light now encased Dale and all the
boys. It was so bright the people in front of me had turned away. Then it
was gone.
I turned around. The boys were there, where they had been since this
started and Dale was standing in the centre of them, their arms extended
and their hands flat against his body as though they were holding him in
place. He slowly lifted his head and looked straight at me. A big smile
broke out on his face. Just as I was about to speak, all four boys started
to fall. I caught Kevin and Dale reached out and grabbed Denny. They
hadn't warned us to be ready for this. Dean and Digger caught Jamie and
Anson had Davey. The boys were all unconscious.
"We have to get them home. Now." Dale said. "Mr. Chen will be ready for
us."
"Mr. Tanner." A voice called. I looked up and it was Nick, one of our new
Drivers. "The cars are here, Sir. Mr. Chen sent us."
"Let's go." I said, scooping up Kevin in my arms. All the boys were
picked up and we headed for the cars. I noticed Jason stoop down where
Dale had been standing and pick something up. He put it in his pocket.
We put each boy in a separate car and two men went with each of the other
boys. Jason went with Dale and Brian went with Anson. I called Mr. Chen
to find out how he was ready for us and to make sure a Doctor had been
called. Making certain Kevin was breathing properly and his heart beat was
regular, I loosened his clothing.
The boys were all carried to Denny's room. Mr. Chen already had Matthew's
bed removed and three additional single beds added to the room as Denny had
instructed. The Doctor was there when we arrived and examined each of the
boys carefully. He reported all their vital signs were weak but stable and
the best thing he could recommend was to let them rest and recover.
This report is written 10th July and there has been no change in the boys'
condition. It has now been 48 hours. Not one has moved. Dale, who the
Doctor also examined and found perfectly fit, has refused to leave the
boy's room. He has not slept and checks on each boy every half hour. He
is indeed their Protector. Jason remains with him constantly. We were
very concerned about Matthew's reaction to all this with having just lost
his Dad. He has been very calm. Denny told him there would be an upset,
but everything would be fine when it had passed and he should just stay
close to his Uncle Tim. Matthew has been willing to accept the words of
his "big brother" without any further question or doubt.
The media had a field day. Headlines galore. All kinds of speculation
about what was happening at the "mysterious castle". Dean has steadfastly
stated, "No comment." to every inquiry. He allowed the Mayor and Police
Chief Farrell to visit the boy's room and did sit and talk to them for
about an hour. They met Dale. They also have been silent to the media
since their visit.
We continue to wait.
The Prophesy of the Guardians
The House of Chen, being both old and honourable,
shall be the Caretakers of this vision of the yet to come.
From this time forth, one son will be born to the House
of Chen in each generation to the number of 110.
These males shall be the Caretakers and shall guard this
knowledge until its time arrives.
In the world of new beginnings, a Shogun (Leader/Prince)
of infinite wealth, after being lost and found again by his
Samurai (Warrior Chief) will both learn that their real riches
lie elsewhere. To them will come four treasures to be nurtured
and guided. They will father the four to manhood. . During the
course of their growth, the Protector will meet a fatal end. He will
be the first returned from the forever.
Each Guardian will possess gifts.
One will hold the gift of dreams and control of the emotions.
One will hold the gift of looking into and influencing the minds
of his fellow man and knowing truth.
One will hold the gift of communication and know all
languages, written and spoken.
One will hold the gift of prophesy and he will be the
catalyst to the power of the four.
Each will sense the presence of others.
Together, as one, the Guardians will hold a gift never
allowed before to man.
There are dark forces and men who fear the power of the
Guardians and would use it for their own purposes.
Care must be taken to preserve them while they
grow and develop their skills. They must learn to love and
trust, so that they may serve the needs of mankind.
