Me and Joey
Chapter 1
Man! I've been sitting here for 10 minutes, I've got to get moving, I'm
gonna be late. Well, it was worth it, I mean that very street is where my
life changed drastically just a few months ago. Who would have ever dreamed,
I would be living here in Orlando, and doing what I'm doing right now. Oh,
let me tell you a little about myself. My name is William, but every body
calls me Billy. I'm 33 years old, about 5'9 inches tall, and built stocky at
about 185 lbs. I have brownish/blonde hair and green eyes. I'm from the
great state of Kentucky, home of fast men and beautiful horses, or, is that
the other way around? Well, anyway I've lived there for most of my life.
There, I played drums for a gospel group of all things.....lol. It's
funny how someone's opinion of you seems to change, when they find out that
you're gay. You see, when my group found out that I was gay I was immediately
fired. Oh well, that's another story in itself. Now where was I? Oh yes,
well, I decided that it was time for a change in my life, and a new place to
start over. Music is, and was, my world so, when I was fired, my world
crumbled around me, I became depressed, almost dysfunctional. So, I took a
nice vacation to sunny Orlando, FL. I would have never dreamed that it would
be the beginning of a whole new life for me. I remember the day it all
happened. I was driving down this very street, just checking things out when
out of nowhere.......................
"Sir are you ok?" Asked the police officer. I didn't answer I just looked
around in a daze. "Sir! Are you ok?" The police officer asked again.
"I think so, I'm not really sure to be honest, I feel kind of strange," I
answered.
I must have blacked out or something because the next thing I remember, I was
waking up in a hospital room. Oddly enough when I woke up I couldn't
remember anything, not even where I was, or why I was there. The only thing
I saw when I came to, was a man sitting in a chair, in the corner of the room.
He looked as if he was asleep so I tried to be quiet.
"Well, it looks like sleeping beauty is awake now," the man said, startling
me a little.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to wake you," I said, trying to sound as if nothing
was wrong. I mean here was this person speaking to me and I didn't have a
clue who he was.
"How are you feeling?" The man asked.
"I don't know, Where am I, and who are you?" I asked in a scared voice. I
guess it showed on my face too, because he came over, sat on my bed, and put
his hand over mine. I didn't have a clue what was going on here. When he
touched my hand I felt a strange feeling run through my body, I don't know how
to describe it, but at the moment it was comforting.
"My name is Joey," the man said, as he looked at me with concern. "What can
you tell me about why you're here?" He asked, as he looked at me closely.
"Well, I don't know, Where exactly IS here?" I asked, as a sharp pain hit
the back of my head. I placed my hand over the area where the pain was, and I
could feel the bandages that were covering my injury.
"Listen, why don't I go get the doctor and then we'll talk ok?" Joey asked,
as he stood up to leave.
"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea, my head really hurts," I said, as
another pain hit, this one not as bad as the other, but I knew it was there
just the same.
Joey went to get the doctor, which gave me time to realize that I was in
a hospital, I just didn't know why. I tried to think about different things,
but for some reason nothing worked. I couldn't remember why I was there,
where I had been, who my family was, where I lived, anything. I looked at the
bracelet on my wrist and found that my name was William Prescott, at least I
think it was my name. I began to feel a little uneasy, when Joey came back in
with the doctor.
"Well, I see we've decided to join the land of the conscious finally," the
doctor said, as he reached my bedside, and began to give me the once over.
"I guess so doctor," I said, "how long have I been in here?" I asked, as I
watched the doctor work on things here and there.
"You've been here for three days William," the doctor said, as he checked my
pulse and heart rate. Then, he got that little light out of his pocket and
shined it in my eyes, man I hate it when they do that. "So, do you know why
you're here?" The doctor asked.
"Well, to be honest no, I can't remember anything," I said, with more than a
little fear in my voice. "Could you tell me what's going on here?" I asked
the doctor.
"Sure William, let me start by saying my name is Dr. Randall, Dr. James
Randall, I've been looking after you since you arrived a few days ago," he
said, putting my chart back at the end of the bed. "You were in a serious car
accident William. It seems a drunk driver ran a red light, and slammed into
Mr. Fatone's car, which in turn spun his car into yours. You came to us with
a nasty little head injury," he said, still looking at me with concern on his
face. "Mr. Fatone walked away without a scratch, which was quite amazing
really," he said, smiling at Joey.
"Ok, two things," I said, "first, I'm assuming that you are Mr. Fatone,
right?" I asked, looking at Joey. He shook his head to let me know that I
was right. "Ok, second William sounds so formal, could you just call me Bill
or Billy?" I asked, and I didn't know why I was asking them that question.
It just felt strange being called William, which was strange too, I guess,
considering I didn't know what people called me.
"That's fine with me Will, I mean Billy," Dr. Randall said, with a slight
laugh to his voice as he caught his mistake. I don't know why but I liked
this man. He seemed really nice, professional, but easy going, and for some
reason that just made me feel more comfortable.
"Billy, it seems you have a slight case of amnesia, I'm sure it's nothing to
worry about, it happens quite often with head injuries such as yours. The
good news is you have no broken bones or any other injuries that we can see,"
Dr. Randall said, with a smile.
"Well, how long will this amnesia last Dr.?" I asked, more than a little
concerned. It's a very bad feeling to not be able to remember who you are,
what's going on in your life, your family, or if you even have family for that
matter.
"I don't know Billy," Dr. Randall answered, "sometimes, it only lasts a day,
other times, weeks, even months. We'll just have to wait and see what
happens, but we're going to keep you here for a few more days to make sure
everything is ok, and after that you can go home." I started to interrupt
him, when he held his hand up signaling for me to let him finish.
"Now, I know you are from Kentucky, and we've tried to call the number on
your license to contact a family member but have been unsuccessful. I don't
want to leave you alone, at least not until the amnesia goes away or we can
get in touch with your family," he said, finishing his thought.
I looked at him with questioning eyes, as tears formed in their corners, I
tried to hide my feelings, but they betrayed me as the tears rolled down my
cheek. "What am I going to do Dr.?" I asked, realizing that I couldn't even
take care of myself, and that was a scary thought. "I don't even know where I
am, or what's going on, who's going to stay with me?" I asked, not knowing
what was going to happen to me.
"Well, that's where I come in," Joey said, from the corner of the room, I had
almost forgotten he was even there. I shot him a questioning look.
"Billy, if you don't mind, I told Dr. Randall, that you could come and stay
with me until you were able to take care of yourself, or until the amnesia
went away," Joey said, looking at me with a questioning smile as if he wasn't
sure he'd done the right thing.
"Joey, I don't know, that's a lot to ask of you, and besides I don't even
know you," I said, stating the facts. However, something within me trusted
this man, and yet it seemed there was something else there, even though it
escaped me.
"So?" Joey asked, with a little grin on his face. "Can you think of a
better way to get to know each other?" He said, his grin broadening into a
full blown smile, as he held his hands up in the air for emphasis.
"Well, let's just see how things go for the next couple of days and you can
decide then, ok Billy?" Dr. Randall asked, drawing my attention away from
Joey.
"Ok Doc, sounds like a plan to me," I said, smiling at Dr. Randall.
"Well guys, I have a few more rounds to make, so, I will leave you two alone,
if you need me just have the nurse page me," he said, as he walked toward the
door.
"Ok Dr. Randall, thanks for everything," I said, as I waved to him from my
bed.
Joey got up and walked Dr. Randall to the door and out into the hall
saying something I couldn't quite understand. I was just sitting there
thinking about everything that had just happened when Joey came back into the
room.
"Where did you run off to?" I asked, as he sat on my bed.
"Oh I just wanted to walk Dr. Randall out and talk to him about a few
things," he answered, mysteriously.
"Like what things?" I asked, not wanting to drop the subject.
"Oh, nothing important right now, don't worry. So, how are you feeling?" He
asked, trying to change the subject.
"Things haven't changed too much in the last 10 minutes Joey," I said, with a
slight laugh. Joey laughed along with me, realizing that it was a bad
question at that particular moment.
"All in all, I guess I'm doing pretty good huh?" I asked.
"Considering the alternative, I'd say you are doing great," he said, with a
smile. I looked up at Joey with several questions running through my mind. I
mean, here I am without a clue as to what I should do next. I didn't know
where I was, where I was going, or what I was doing for that matter. Somebody
out there MUST be worried about me. I've been in the hospital for three days
for crying out loud.
"Do you need anything?" Joey asked, sensing my questioning mind.
"Can we just talk for a minute?" I asked, not really knowing where to start
this conversation.
"Sure we can, if that's what you want," Joey said, with a smile on his face.
He leaned in a little closer to me and asked, "So, what's on your mind?"
"Well, for starters, you and I, are we friends, relatives, co-workers, how do
we know each other?" I asked, trying to find out some things about me, as well
as Joey.
"Well, we're just friends," Joey spoke, in half honesty. You see, Joey and I
hadn't even met until the accident. Since I was alone, and the Hospital had no
way of contacting any family, Joey took it upon himself to BE my family for
now. Of course I wouldn't know that until much later.
"Do you know my family?" I asked, hoping Joey could help click something in
my memory.
"Well, no I don't," Joey said, in a sorrowful tone. "Me and you have only
known each other a short time, and we haven't really talked about our
families," Joey said, as close to the truth as he could get.
"I see," I said, in a disappointing tone as I looked away from Joey. "This
is very frustrating, ya know? I don't know anything about myself, and it
seems no one can tell me," I said, as the tears started again. Joey just
grabbed my hand and stroked the back of it with his thumb.
"Hey guy, everything is going to be fine, you'll get your memory back in no
time, trust me," Joey said, in the most assuring voice he could. That voice
was enough to calm me at the moment.
"I guess you're right Joey, it will all work out," I said, trying to convince
myself that it was true.
"Listen, why don't you lie back down and get some more rest, We can talk more
when you wake up," Joey said.
"Ok, I am a little tired," I answered. The last thing I remember before
falling asleep was Joey sitting in that chair in the corner just smiling at
me. What a nice way to slip into my dream world.
I slept until the next day, when I awoke to voices in my room. When I opened
my eyes Joey was talking to another guy that I didn't recognize. From what I
had heard, I knew that this guy's name was JC. I overheard JC telling Joey
that he hoped he knew what he was doing. Joey responded by telling JC not to
worry that he could handle it, at that point I decided to make my presence
known.
"Ya know, you guys could be a little quieter," I said in a sleepy voice,
drawing the young men's attention.
"Oh man, I'm sorry we didn't mean to wake you, are you feeling ok?" Joey
asked, in his own caring little way.
"Actually I do Joey, my head's not hurting as much as before," I said,
glancing from Joey to my new visitor.
"Oh Billy, this is Joshua Chasez, he's one of my best friends. Josh, this is
Billy," Joey said, making the introductions.
"Nice to meet you Josh," I said, extending my hand.
"Nice to meet you too Billy, and please call me JC, all my friends do," he
said, with a bright smile.
"Ok, JC it is then," I said, smiling back as brightly as I could.
"Well, listen, I guess I should go now, the guys are waiting on me, so,
you'll call if you need us right Joe?" JC asked, looking at Joey in a big
brother kind of way.
"Yeah, I'll call if anything changes, don't worry," Joey answered, with a
smile.
"Billy, I hope you feel better soon, and again it was nice to meet you. I'm
sure we'll see each other again," JC said, as he walked toward the door,
turning around and smiling at the both of us before he left.
"He seems nice," I said to Joey, nodding my head towards the door JC had just
left.
"Yeah, there's no better friend in the world than that guy," Joey said,
almost in admiration. That caused several questions to come to mind. I
didn't ask them though. I didn't feel as if I should. I felt if Joey wanted
me to know, he would tell me. Until then, it was none of my business.
My day went much like the day before, except that I had improved quite a bit
physically. Dr. Randall had stopped by and given me the green light to go
home, or in this case, Joey's home. Joey was there every time I woke up,
sometimes, he was sleeping, sometimes he was reading, and sometimes he was
just watching me. I considered myself very lucky to have such a wonderful
friend, even if I couldn't remember him.
The day finally came, and Dr. Randall released me from the hospital, leaving
strict instructions with Joey as to what to do if this happened or that
happened. Smiling to myself, I thought what a couple of mother hens they were
being. Joey and I had learned a lot about each other over the course of the
last day or two. Well, ok, I learned a lot about Joey, but it seemed we
shared the same sense of humor about things. I liked the way he would light up
when he talked about something that fueled his passion. I found that he loved
to sing, although, I had a feeling there was more to it than he was telling
me.
It felt good to finally get out of that hospital. Joey had gone out and
bought some new clothes for me to wear since I had no idea where mine were and
the ones I did have had been ruined in the accident. There's only so much
blood you can get out of a shirt, ya know what I mean?
Joey pulled into his driveway, telling me that he had just moved into this
house a few months ago, until then he had been living with his parents. It was
a nice house, not too big, not too small, it had 4 bedrooms, living room,
kitchen, dining room, den, 2 bathrooms, a huge deck out back, over looking a
nice sized pool, and a big backyard.
"So, how do you like the place?" Joey asked.
"It's great man, you live here alone?" I asked, looking around the house.
"Yeah, I took it because it has enough room for me, and for the guys, when
they drop by," he said, in a proud voice.
"What guys?" I asked, not knowing who he was talking about.
"Oh I'm sorry," he said, "I keep forgetting that you don't know the guys, or
anyone else for that matter. Don't worry you'll meet everyone soon enough, and
you've already met JC," he said, smiling at me.
"Sounds like a plan," I said, smiling back at him. "Hey listen, I appreciate
you letting me stay here and taking care of me and everything, it's really
nice of you."
"Hey, don't mention it, that's what friends are for," he said, waving his
hand in the air as a gesture letting me know it wasn't a big deal and not to
worry about it.
Things went pretty good the rest of the day, we had decided that we should
get ready for bed, so, Joey took me to my room and made sure I had everything
I needed. I really liked Joey he was so kind, funny, and a great friend. Not
many people would do what he was doing for me. I was sure of that.
"Hey, if you need me, my room is right next door," Joey said, as I got ready
for bed.
"Ok guy, thanks, really," I said.
"Your welcome Billy, sleep well and I'll see you in the morning," Joey said,
as he closed the door. I took off my clothes and got into bed looking forward
to a peaceful night's sleep. Things were going just fine, until the nightmare
started.........
