Chapter 50 Saying Goodbye

I awoke early the following morning. It was good to visit with my
friends from Excalibur and the Princes and their family. It was even good
to see Christian if only to end things on a proper note.
But today was a new day for me. Today, I was going home to Lance.
I figured by the time I would get to Orlando it would be dark. I could
surprise Lance. He believed me dead. Just like "That's When I'll Stop
Loving You" says, "When lies become the truth". I wasn't dead. And I had
not stopped loving him since the day we got together. If anything, my love
for him had grown.
I showered and dressed in the clothes that I had left Lance
wearing. I didn't waste any time as I packed my bags, too. Nothing was
going to stop me from leaving. Not even the end of the world.
Once my bags were packed, I went downstairs for breakfast. Albus
was up along with Jayce eating breakfast.
	"Good morning," I greeted cheerily.
"You're in a good mood," Jayce noticed. "What has brought this
on?"
	"I'm leaving for home today."
"Ah, yes, of course. Rather exciting, isn't it?"
"I'm returning to my soul mate. All is good."
I sat and served myself some of the food on the table. As I ate,
Harry came down in his pajamas and robe.
	"Good morning," he greeted.
	"Good morning," we replied.
"Harry, today we return to Hogwarts," Albus said.
	"Today?" Harry asked.
"Yes. Our work here is done. All is set right again. Eric is
returning home today, as I'm sure Hyppolyta is, too. There is no longer a
need for us here."
	Harry nodded.
"What did you think of your adventure?"
"It was terrifying. I hope I don't see another vampire or demon
again."
We all smiled at Harry's response. He smiled, too, served himself
some food, and ate breakfast with us.
"Would you see us off?" Albus asked me.
"I would be glad to seeing as how I escorted you from your school."

After breakfast, Albus and Harry packed their bags and we climbed
in the car. In no time, Jayce had driven us to King's Cross Station where
they would catch the Hogwarts Express on platform nine and three-quarters.
We climbed out the car and I helped carry their bags through the magical
wall to the train.
"Thank you for your help, Professor, young Mr. Potter," Jayce said
to the two wizards.
"It was our pleasure," Professor Dumbledore replied.
"It was a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Haverhill," Harry said to
Jayce.
	"Mine as well, Mr. Potter."
Professor Dumbledore turned to me. "Mr. McCoy, I am glad to have
met you. You are a great warrior and a great soul. It was an honor to
fight by your side against the forces of darkness."
"The honor was mine, Professor. It is rare that someone gets to
fight alongside a great wizard such as yourself. And young Harry, as
well."
Professor Dumbledore shook my hand and then climbed on board the
train. Harry turned to look at me.
	"This is goodbye," he said.
	"Yes, it is."
"I am not very good with goodbyes."
	"Neither am I."
"I guess we have a lot in common."
I nodded and Harry grabbed me in a hug.
"Will I ever see you again?" he asked.
"I don't know, Harry. We don't know what the future holds."
Harry nodded and looked up at me. "I'm glad to have met you."
	"Me, too, Harry."
I patted Harry on the head and he climbed on board the train with
his bags. The train whistle blew and began its journey out of the station.
Harry stuck his head and arm out the window and waved. I waved until the
train had departed.
	"Are you okay?" Jayce asked.
	"Too many goodbyes, Jayce."
Jayce nodded in understanding and headed back through the magical
wall. I followed and we went to the car. The car phone was ringing as we
climbed in.
"Hello?" Jayce answered. "Yes...will do." Jayce hung up the
phone and turned to me. "That was Quentin. There is an emergency at West
Minster Abbey. Vampires have taken the people hostage."
	"Let's go," I said.
Jayce started up the engine and drove to the church. I climbed out
not dressed in my Bat-suit by my regular clothes.
"Aren't you going to change?" Jayce asked.
"No. Eric McCoy is going to take care of this."
I walked over to a tree and snapped off a sturdy branch. Jayce
talked with the Bobbies and they let me through. I neared the door, took
several deep breaths, and entered. I wasn't used to going into the jaws of
danger without a costume on.
The church was cold. I looked around at the stained glass windows.
I could feel the holiness of a house of God. That was something I always
enjoyed: walking into a church and feeling the presence of God.
"What are you doing here?" a voice said from the front.
"I've come to slay you," I said to the vampire standing at the
front of the church.
The parishioners turned and looked at me. Three vampires moved
close to the hostages.
"You forget we have hostages. We can kill them rather easily."
"You are not going to do this," I said.
	"Why not?"
"Because I'm going to stop you."
A vampire moved behind me thinking I didn't know. The vampire
leader smiled a disgusting smile. I shoved the tree branch behind me and
staked the vampire. It screamed and turned to dust.
I ran to the front of the church only to be tackled by the three
vampires. I kneed one between the legs and it rolled off me. I backhanded
one and flipped the other over my head. With a quick motion, I staked the
vampire I backhanded and the vampire I kneed. Then I flipped up and
turned.
The vampire I flipped over me stood glaring at me. He swung his
leg at me. I blocked it. His attack was followed by a punch at me. I
blocked that as well and shoved the stake in his heart. He turned to dust
as I turned around to face the leader.
"You've managed to kill my minions. But you have to face me."
	"Not a problem."
I felt confident. I had a plane to catch and I wasn't about to
miss it for a measly vampire.
The vampire leader glared at me. He ran at me and I ran at him. I
lunged at him and he grabbed my wrists. His head flew forward and he head
butted me. My head snapped backward with the impact and pain.
"You can't win," he snarled at me. "I'm going to eat your heart
right out of your chest."
I brought my face down to look at him. The look in my eyes and on
my face must have intimidated him. His countenance changed from fierce to
fear.
"Sorry," I replied. "My heart belongs to another."
I moved my hands around and grabbed the vampire's wrists and then
brought his hands down. I brought my leg up and kicked him in the chest.
The impact sent him down the aisle to the podium. I marched up to him as
he clutched his chest.
"Say goodbye." I grabbed him and threw him into the large wooden
cross hanging in front of the stain glass window and watched as he burst
into flame.
The vampire's dust settled and I turned around walking back down
the aisle. The parishioners looked upon me with gratitude for saving their
lives. I kept walking, though, right through the door and up to Jayce.
The Bobbies looked at me wondering what happened. I opened the passenger
side door and turned to the Bobbies.
"It's all clear," I said, and then climbed in the car.

We arrived back at the castle and I saw Hyppolyta in her white
Greek gown with bracelets on and crown in her hair.
	"Leaving so soon?" I asked.
"It is time. I have spent enough time in man's world."
"You have to admit we are not all that bad."
"No, YOU are not. Spending time with you has caused me to
reconsider the positions we Amazons have on men. Maybe, some day, you will
be able to come and visit Thymiscira."
"I would love to visit you some time."
	"Perhaps. One day."
"Can I help you with your bags, your majesty?"
Hyppolyta looked on me narrowly as if she were ready to tear my
head off for assuming she was too weak to carry her own bags. Then, she
realized exactly what the friendly gesture was: a friendly gesture, and she
nodded 'yes'. I reached down and took two of her bags.
"Quentin," she said to the Watcher standing in the doorway to the
lounge. "If you should ever need my help, do not hesitate."
"I will not. Thank you for your service to the world."
Hyppolyta nodded to Quentin, then to Jayce, and walked out the
door. I followed with her bags around the side of the castle.
"Are you catching a plane at the airport?" I asked.
"No. I have my own transportation."
She walked into the nearby field and to my amazement seemed to step
up on nothing and sit her bags down. I approached where she was and handed
her the bags.
	"What the..."
"It's an invisible jet," she replied. "Once inside, the occupants
become invisible to the naked eye. Only Amazons can see it."
	"Amazing," I replied.
Hyppolyta smiled at me. "This is where I give leave of you. It
was an honor to fight by your side. You are a credit to your people."
"A credit to males?" I asked.
"No. A credit to homosexuals." She smiled at me and pulled the
stairs up.
I stepped back not knowing exactly which way she was going. Then I
heard the jets come on and saw a little bit of blue flame coming out the
back. The blue turned and I watched as it taxied across the field then
lift off into the air. In a moment, the sound of jet engines was heard
overhead but not a plane was in sight. I waved just the same hoping she
could see me.
	"Goodbye, Hyppolyta."
I walked back to the castle to find Jayce standing at the door with
my bags. "I take it you are ready, too?"
"Yes," I answered. "It has been a long trip."
"I hope you will come back to visit."
"I don't know, Jayce. Dying is one thing I do not want to repeat.
Ever."
Jayce laughed at me as we put my bags in the car.
I turned to Quentin. "I will check in with the Watcher in
Sunnydale and see what is going on. What's his name again?"
	"Rupert Giles."
	"Thanks."
"No. Thank you, Mr. McCoy. For everything."
"Next time, don't make it an immortal demon. Maybe a bunny rabbit
or something."
For the first time, Quentin laughed. I laughed, too, and then
climbed in the car. Did he laugh because what I said was funny? Or did he
know of a demon that looked like a rabbit? I hoped it wasn't the latter.
Jayce climbed in the drivers' seat and started the engine. Down
the twisty mountain road, he drove, and into the city, past Buckingham
Palace and West Minster Abbey until we finally arrived at the airport.
We climbed out and took my bags through customs. As the
announcement for my flight came over the loudspeaker, Jayce turned to me.
"I appreciate all you've done for us, Eric. You've saved the
world."
"I couldn't have done it alone. Everyone else played a major part
in our victory."
"Maybe one day a group of heroes such as yourself will band
together to ensure things like what almost happened never do. It was
difficult gathering all of you together."
	"Maybe," I replied. "One day."
Jayce smiled at me and shook my hand. "Sorry about keeping you
from your life. I hope you can pick up where you left off."
	"Me, too."
I took my carry-on bag, which had my Bat-suit in it, and walked
through the metal detector. I walked to the gate, turned to Jayce and
waved. I could hardly believe it. I was boarding a plane that would take
me home to Lance. A dream I had ever since arriving at this place almost
three or so months ago was finally coming true. I was going home. I was
returning to Lance.
