                                      +++

During the following several weeks, Jake became more and more excited at
the fact that he was going to be attending several award shows in the
coming months. Another small reason for his sudden happiness was the fact
that his birthday was only a couple of short days away. He was finally
turning 24 and couldn't wait for the big bash he knew his sister and
parents were going to throw him even though they did their best to hide
it from him.
"Hey Maggie." Jake strut cheerfully into the kitchen where his sister
washed the dishes used during dinner minutes before.
"Hey." Maggie replied while holding one plate under the fast running
water and making the small bits of food slide down the drain hole.
"So... What are we doing for my birthday?"
"I don't know, what do you want to do?" Asked Maggie.
"Let's throw a big party." Jake replied in hopes of getting some birthday
plans out of her.
"A party? It's too soon too plan anything, Jake."
"What about mom and dad? Are they planning anything?" Jake asked.
"I don't know." Maggie finished cleaning the dishes and handed the tray
of white plates to Jake. "Here can you put these back?"
"Year, sure."
He tried but no luck. Jake put the plates away and stepped into the
living room to watch some T.V. He changed it to the food network to see
Molto Mario on the Food Network, he was a close friend of the Gyllenhaal
family and happened to be a great Italian cook who had his own cooking
show in television. He watched as Mario Batali scurried around his small
kitchen and made amazing plates of food. It was all like a dance,
carefully choreographed and laid out for everyone to admire. Maggie
walked out from the kitchen then up to Jakes room. She took his cell
phone from his nightstand and walked back down to her bedroom. She closed
the door behind her and sat on her bed, then pulled the cordless phone
onto her lap. She looked through Jakes phone book and called all his
friends to invite them to a surprise birthday party for Jake. One of the
numbers on the list belonged to Christian. After calling everyone and
letting them know the party was a surprise, she returned the phone to its
place and Jake never noticed a thing.
                                      +++

That day was very, very special because it was the day of Jakes birthday
but he was a little down since he know believed that their was going to
be no big party held for him. Jakes cell phone went off first thing in
the morning, he opened his eyes and turned to get the phone charging
besides his bed light.
"Yeah?" He groaned still half asleep. When he spoke he could feel his
warm morning breath bounce back onto his lips after hitting and bouncing
off the phone receiver.
"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Jake.
Happy birthday to you!" The man sang. Jake took the phone away from his
ear and looked at the small screen. It was his friend Austin Nichols
singing over the telephone.
"Thank you." Jake said, his voice low and raspy from waking up early.
"I wanted to get you before anyone else." Austin said.
"You're definitely the first." Jake smiled.
"Good, well, cancel all your plans today because we're going to hang out
all day for your birthday."
"Will do."
"Okay, I'll let you get back to sleep."
"Alright, I'll see you later."
"Yeah, bye." Jake closed his phone and set it back down on the dresser
then rolled over and fell asleep again.
The sun arose hastily provoking the small birds sitting out on the tree
branches to sing their morning songs. Rays of light shot through the
sides of the window blinds and danced on the floor signaling another day.
Jake got up and stumbled out of bed as he dragged his feet along the
white carped that lined his bedroom floor. He put on a shirt from his
drawer and walked downstairs to the sweet smell of coffee and scrambled
eggs. Maggie sat on the kitchen table with the cordless phone cradled
between her shoulder and cheek while Peter sat besides her eating
breakfast.
"Good morning sunshine." Peter looked up from his plate with a fork in
his right hand and a napkin in the other. "Happy birthday."
"Hey, thanks." Jake scratched the back of his head while putting on a
kind smile. "Who's she talking to?" He nodded at Maggie and took a seat.
Peter shrugged his shoulders. "Ever since she woke up she's been calling
different numbers."
Maggie finally got off the phone and turned to Jake. "Hey birthday boy."
She smiled and got off her seat to walk over to her brother. Jake stood
up and they hugged tightly. "Happy birthday." She whispered.
"Thanks." Jake replied. "Was that mom and dad?"
"No it was Sandra." Sandra was Maggie's personal assistant and close
friend. Just then the doorbell rang, sounding through out the entire
house. Maggie stood up and walked to get the door while Peter went to
clean off his plate in the kitchen. Jake sat quietly in the kitchen table
and heard Maggie talking to someone at the house entrance. "Yeah, he's in
here." She said as she and the guest walked over to Jake. He looked up at
Maggie and saw Austin standing behind her with his hands deep inside his
pockets.
"Hey." Jake stood up and walked towards him. He extended his hand and
Austin shook it with a tight grip.
"Ready?" Austin asked.
"For what?"
"I told you, I'm taking you out and around today, remember?"
"Oh yeah, this morning. I almost forgot." Jake sighed. "Okay, I'm going
to go get dressed then I'll come down." Jake walked up to his room and
later came down to meet up with Austin in the living room then they went
outside. "Maggie, I'll be back later." Jake yelled from outside the house
then the two walked to Austin's car.
"Want to go get some breakfast?" Austin asked as he set the car key into
the small key hole near the side of the steering wheel, starting the car.
"Yeah, sure." They drove away from the sloped drive way and left to start
the day.
                                      +++

Christian scurried around his apartment, picking things up and cleaning
the kitchen so everything would be ready by the time he had to leave for
work. During his cleaning tirade, the telephone in the living room
sounded loudly. Christian picked up and heard a woman's voice.
"Christian?" She asked.
"Yeah? Who's this?" He replied, unsure of the callers identity.
"It's Maggie, Jakes sister."
"Oh yeah. What's going on?"
"I just wanted to make sure you were able to come to Jakes surprise
birthday party tonight at 'Avalon' tonight."
"Avalon, the nightclub?"
"Yeah, do you know where that is?"
"Yeah, of course."
"Great. Get there early though because Jakes friend Austin is taking him
out for the day and they're going to get there at around nine."
"Okay, I'll be there sometime around seven-thirty then."
"That sounds great. See you then."
"Cool, I'll see you guys later." Christian hung up the phone and looked
down at his watch. "Shit, I'm going to be late." He told himself while
power walking to the door. He locked the apartment behind him and ran to
the elevator to try and salvage the minutes ticking passed. At exactly
eleven 'o clock, Christian walked through the theatres glass doors then
went to change inside the locker room. After getting into his uniform,
Christian walked into the busy lobby filled with kids and their parents
walking around and buying snacks. He got down to work and met with Randy
to help him run things behind the snack bar.
"It's about time." Randy smirked at him.
"Quiet." Christian handed a large popcorn order to the waiting man on the
other side of the glass counter top. When the films started the people
inside the lobby started to pour themselves into the show rooms and
that's when things started to quiet down. Christian wiped down the glass
casing while Randy and Nicole, their other co-worker, swept and mopped
the floor that had just been covered by waiting and tired feet. Two hours
later that commotion began again as men, women, and children stampede
their way out of the swinging doors. All-in-all, the theatre had been
fairly busy through out the day and Christian was overwhelmed by the
sound of children crying because they weren't bought the last minute
candy bars and their parents trying their hardest to call them down. As
day wore long, the lights inside and out flickered on, illuminating the
workplace to give everyone a more clear few of their surroundings.
Christian tried to keep his mind focused on the task before him but his
mind was on every minute that passed by, silently counting down the hours
until the surprise birthday party. When time did finally arrive, he
tossed what he was doing aside and got out of his work clothes.
"Alright, I'm out of here." He said while walking out from behind the
locker room doors.
"You're done?" Randy yelled.
"Yep."
"Okay, see you tomorrow."
Christian stepped out of the theatre building and into the cold evening
air that hit him like a brick wall, the cold air sweeping past him
causing his hair to fly to the side of his head and his clothes to pin
tightly to his body. He looked down at his watch to make sure he wasn't
going to be late. After arriving home and getting into a fresh pair of
clothes to be worn down later on. He ran around like a chicken with it's
head cut off looking for a watch or necklace and belt, anything to
accessories. After "operation accessorize," Christian got out to his car
and went on his way to Avalon.
Upon arriving to the busy nightclub, he was greeted by a man in a red
vest, ready to park his car. Christian got out and handed his keys over
then made his up to the short line outside the building.
"If you're not on the list then you're not getting in!" The two tough
looking men at the clubs entrance yelled out to the irritated crowd.
Christian didn't know what to do next. Should he cut in front of everyone
and get yelled at by the young men and woman who have been waiting for
what could've been hours or wait like everyone else? He threw caution to
the wind and decided to step away from the line moved to the front of the
line, every step causing more and more nervous fear. The walk up to the
bouncers seemed like it went on forever. Chris' palms got sweaty and the
people to his right looked as if they were ready to pounce at him out of
frustration.
He got up to the men holding clipboards and stood still, looking for his
opportunity. "Hey, I'm here for the Gyllenhaal party." Christian said
nervously. He was very intimidated by the big guys standing before him.
"Name?" One of them ordered.
"Uh, Garcia." He stuttered. Bouncer number one looked through his clip
board and flipped down to the bottom page. He nudged his buddy and
whispered in his ear. Christian watched the two look at the one clipboard
and his heart raced, fearing that he was not able to get in. Bouncer
number two looked at Chris and finally spoke.
"Christian?" He grunted.
"Yeah." A sense of relieve came over him and he could finally crack a
smile.
"Come on in." The bouncer removed the velvet, sausage like rope and
Christian walked into the club. The strobe light burned brightly,
blinding the way through the maze of people. As he inched his way through
the crowed, bumping elbows with the other guests and looking around,
trying to find a familiar face even though he was in a crowd totally
different from the ones he was normally used to. Christian was caught off
guard by Maggie calling out from behind a booth table near the back of
the building. He nodded his head at her and waved then walked over to
her.
"Hey!" She yelled, trying to speak over the music.
"Hi, how are you?" Christian asked, he too yelling loudly and smiling
sweetly.
"Good, did you get in okay?"
"Yeah, I did."
"Good, Austin should be bringing Jake back here any minute now."
"Everyone here is here for the party?"
"Yeah, we rented out the entire place." Maggie retorted.
Christian looked to his left and saw Jessica Simpson sitting besides
Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams. To his right was Maggie, Peter,
Scarlet Johansen, Zoey Deschanel, and Jennifer Aniston having a
conversation. He couldn't believe how many well known Hollywood names
were in one room together and this wasn't even counting the celebrities
on the dance floor or across the room.
"Would you like a glass of champagne, sir?" I waiter carrying a round
tray above his shoulder asked nicely.
"Oh, no thanks." Christian smiled. The waiter left and offered the drink
to someone else.
The music suddenly stopped and the D.J. came on over the speakers. "I've
just gotten word that Jake is right outside so keep a look out."
Meanwhile, Jake and Austin waited to be let into the club. They gave
their names to the bouncers and got inside.
"Shouldn't we go get Maggie and Peter?" Jake asked Austin while making
his way through the doors.
"No, just keep walking, trust me." Austin replied with a devilish grin.
The music stopped again and the D.J. took over the speakers once more.
"Happy birthday to you!" He began. "Happy birthday to you! Everybody!"
The crowd inside all began to sing in unison. "Happy birthday dear Jake.
Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday Jake." Everyone clapped and cheered
when they were through singing. Jake smiled from ear-to-ear and was taken
completely back by the surprise birthday attack.
"You knew about this?" He asked his friend.
"Yeah, everyone did. Look, they're over there." Austin pointed to the
side of the building were his friends and family all sat. Jake and he
walked over and greeted everyone.
"Happy birthday Jake!" Maggie yelled as she hugged him.
"I thought you said it was too late to plan anything."
"We've been planning this for a long time." Maggie said.
"Who's here?"
"Everyone."
"Mom and dad?" Jake asked, hopeful.
"Yep."
"Christian?"
"Yeah, he's over there." Maggie nodded at the area where Christian was
seated a long with Jaime Foxx and singer Eve. Jake went directly to him
and when Christian saw him, he stood up and gave Jake a hug. Chris got
caught up in the moment and was about to kiss Jake but Jake pulled away
seeing as it was neither the time or place to do so. Christian knew he
was stepping on forbidden ground so he acted as if it had never happened.
After greeting him, Jake shook his other friends hands and moved to see
his parents.
"Come on." He pulled Christian by the wrist.
"Where?" Chris asked over the music's beat.
"I want to introduce you to my mom and dad." Although Christian did feel
it was a step in the right direction, he knew Jake was doing it because
it was the polite thing to do and not because of the reason that he had
thought it would be. "Dad!" Jake said loudly, trying to get his fathers
attention. His dad turned to him and smiled at the sight of his youngest
offspring. Christian stood back and could see where Jake had gotten his
good looks from. He watched Jake hug his mom and dad then noticed Jake
turn to him and pull him in close. "This is Christian." He stated.
Christian smiled and extended his hand out.
"It's a pleasure meeting you." He said.
"Pleasures all mine." Jakes mom replied.
"Nice to meet you, sir."
"Sir?" Poppa Gyllenhaal asked. "Jesus, son. I'm I that old?" The entire
Gyllenhaal clan laughed. "It's nice to meet you, Christian."
After Jake introduced Christian to a few of his other friends the party
really started. It was a fun night for everyone and everyone seemed to be
having a great time.
The festivities ended at around 1 a.m. and Christian was getting ready to
go home when Jake stopped him on his way to the door.
"Are you leaving already?" Jake asked.
"Yeah, I'm heading home now. I think I'm going to stop by for a bite to
eat first."
"At one in the morning?" Jake giggled.
"Never was a better time." Christian replied.
"Let me say good bye to some people and I'll come with you."
"No, no. Stay here and party with your friends."
"I think they've had enough of me plus I'm dying for some Chinese food."
Jake smiled at Christian, trying to convince him to let him tag a long.
"Alright, let's go." Jake ran back to Maggie and said his good night to
the people still inside then met with Christian outside. They walked a
block down to the "Mr. Sushi" that was surprisingly still open and looked
at the glowing menu over the cashier woman. "Hello. Can I help you?" She
asked politely.
"Yeah, can I have an order of sushi, white rice, teriyaki chicken and..."
Christian looked at Jake. "What do you want?"
"Oh, you can go ahead. I'll go after you." Jake said.
"Okay." He turned back around. "That's it." The woman punched in his
order and Christian stepped aside to let Jake through. After receiving
their food orders, Jake and Christian walked back into the early morning
and up the block to the Avalon nightclub. "Here, hold this really quick."
Christian handed his bags filled with warm, white Styrofoam boxes of
Chinese food. He walked up to the man behind the small booth besides the
building and asked for his car to be brought around. He received his keys
and drove down to meet Jake on the street curb. Jake carefully placed the
bags in the back seat then sat down in the passengers side. They arrived
at the complex parking lot and got their stuff from the back of the car
then strolled up to the building doors. The light inside was still on and
a man was making reservations over the phone when Christian walked
inside. Jake and he carried their takeout to the elevator, up to the
second floor, down the hallway and into the apartment. Christian got in
first, turning on the lights on since the entire apartment was completely
dark. When the lights flipped on, Sargent barked from inside the bedroom
and came out running to see who had just entered his domain. When he saw
Christians, he pounced on him with glee. "You can leave your bags on the
table." Christian said, moving into the dimly lit kitchen, taking in down
two plates and glass cups from the higher shelf's. He skipped back into
the dining room to find Jake reaching into the clear plastic bags and
hauling out the small white boxes of food.
"Ah, fuck." Jake hissed.
"What's wrong, did you burn yourself?"
"Yeah." He stuck his middle finger in his mouth to ease the burning pain
on his skin but continued to unload the take out. Afterwards, they
decided to move the furniture in the living room around to make a big
empty space near the center of the place so they could eat while sitting
on the floor. Christian turned the television set on with the small
remote control and flipped through the endless early morning shows. The
movie "To Kill A Mocking Bird" was playing on one of the movie channels
so they watched the old classic as they enjoyed each others company and
ate. "This has to be my favorite book of all time." Jake said before
placing a sushi roll into his mouth.
"To Kill A Mocking Bird?" Christian asked.
"Mm hm." Jake nodded and chewed.
"I've never read it. I've seen the movie but never read the book."
"The book is a lot better."
"Yeah? I'll check it out from the library sometime." They continued to
watch the black and white film.
"So... uh." Jake started. "Did you and Randy have a nice lunch?"
"What?"
"That day when I stopped by a while ago."
"Oh, yeah. It was nice, you should've stayed to have a bite to eat."
"Nah, I had some stuff to do, you know?"
"Yeah." Christian looked at Jake and smiled. "You don't like him, do
you?"
"Is it obvious?"
"Yeah, you get weird when his name comes up. Remember that day in your
trailer after you knocked your tooth out?"
Jake smiled, remembering everything as if it had just happened two
seconds ago. "Oh yeah. Is it stupid if I say that the reason I didn't
stay that one day wasn't because I was busy but because he was here?"
"No. Is it stupid of me to say that I felt really awkward when we ran
into your friend at the park? I was about to leave so that you guys could
talk alone."
"We seriously need to get over our jealousy issues." Jake laughed at his
comment.
"Wow wow wow, who said I was jealous?" Christian asked.
"Weren't you?"
Christian scoffed. "Who am I kidding. Yeah, I was. We need new friends."
Jakes narrowed his eyes and laughed while holding onto his chopsticks and
bowl of noodles. Christian leaned in and kissed Jake on the lips, taking
in the taste of Jakes saliva mixed with the flavor of the soup. Jake
kissed back then backed away from him slowly.
"What was that for?" He asked.
"I don't know."
Jake shook his head and this time he took the initiative and kissed
Christian back. At first it was an innocent kiss but quickly turned to a
rough and passionate kiss that would lead them to ignore the television
screen all together. Christian hovered over Jake, holding onto the sides
of his neck and making his back press against the couch cushions behind
him. Jake reached up with his free hand and placed it on Chris' hip,
gently pulling him closer and causing friction to grow between their warm
and aroused bodies. Who knew that a black and white movie followed by
take out food could lead to this. Jake stood up, never taking his lips
away from Christians, then sat on the couch that was far off to the side
of the room and leaned himself back onto the arm rest. Christian began to
move his lips around Jakes neck, not missing a single spot and moved up
to his jaw line all the while Jake began to pull up the bottom of his
shirt.
"Wait, wait, wait. Hold on." Christian stopped Jake from moving any
further.
"Why?" Jake sighed, a bit out of breath and positively aroused.
Christian looked at Sargent who was sitting by the couch they were on.
Jake sighed and got out from under Christian. "Where are you going?"
Christian asked.
"Let's go to your room." Jake requested in a low tone and devilish grin.
"My room?"
Jake nodded and kissed Christian again. They kept kissing while stumbling
down the hall and into the bedroom. Once inside, Christian shut the door
behind them, not because he feared someone coming in and finding them but
more to keep Sargent out. After Christian shut the door to be a lone with
his friend, Jake rushed him from in front and knocked him back onto the
door, making a loud thump when Christians back hit the wood. They kissed
with tremendous amount of fury, not wasting any time to come up for air.
Jake pulled off his shirt in a matter of seconds, showing off the
incredibly shaped body he had developed from having to work out for his
role as a marine. Christian wrapped his fingers around Jakes waist,
digging his nails deep into Jakes flesh, feeling every single muscle and
crease in his hips then reached up to remove his own shirt. Jakes fingers
scrambled to undo his pants top button and zipper and managed to do so
after receiving a helping hand from Christian. He then kicked of his
shoes and stepped out of his jeans then waited for Christian to undress.
Socks, shoes, shirt, pants, underwear, everything was carelessly
scattered around the bedroom floor as Christian laid on the bed sheets
awaiting Jake to follow behind him. Jake slid down his white boxer shorts
and kneeled on the foot of the mattress, his perked up hard-on showing
the state of excitement that he was presently in, and made his way over
Christian. Their lips gravitated towards each other, it was as if their
mouths had permanently molded around one another, taking in the exact
shape of their lips so it would be a comfortable fit. With every ounce of
adrenalin flowing through his body, Christian felt like he was able to
anything and not feel strange about it doing so. He reached down to take
hold of Jakes elated cock, wrapping his slender fingers around it,
holding on gently as if it were to break with the slightest mal
treatment. Jake sighed with pleasure senses running up his torso.
Christian watched Jakes face the more he handled his stiff member,
gliding four of his five fingers from under the scrotum to the base of
Jakes penis. This, of course, sent signs of desire and climax that
crawled under Jakes skin the more and more they continued with foreplay,
every time the feelings becoming more intense. All of a sudden, Jake shot
upwards and turned around to face forward. "Come here." He panted and
pulled Christian up to his knees then reached behind to hook his hand
around Chris' leg and pull him closer to his bottom. "Come on."
Christian looked at Jake from behind, seeing how forward he was with his
urges. He reached to the drawer and under the two magazines he had bought
earlier and took out a condom from the small black box then pinched the
top off and slid it on himself. He got aligned with Jakes opening then
inched his way inside.
"Ahhh!" Jake hissed feeling the pressure developing around his ass.
"Shit!"
Christian gasped to the feeling of Jake engulfing him. His hips, moving
slow at first but carefully picking up pace, moved rapidly, thrusting
forwards and backwards. The pain Jake felt caused by Christian started to
die out like the flame of a candle that has been burning nearly the
entire night. Soon all Jake could feel was pleasure and Christian softly
hitting his backside with his pelvis. The room was trampled by the
moaning and groaning men going at it on the bed, heat transpired making
the glass mirror on the opposite wall begin to fog up and the sound of
the head board smacking onto the wall at a constant pace was music to
their ears. Jake lifted himself off the sheets with his arms and
Christian leaned forward to kiss the back and sides of Jakes neck, making
him squirm with delight.
"Ah---oh." Christian let out small clouds of breath into Jake's ear, they
way Jake had done to him the time before. Christian reached climax
minutes later and disconnected himself from Jake, pulling away gently,
careful to cause damage. Jake whipped back around and sat besides
Christian, his back up against the headboard as Christian tried his
hardest to desperately catch his breath. Jake was sure as hell not
finished with him though. The more they kissed the more they started to
feel aroused again, Jake with his cock still fully awake and demanding
attention. Christian saw this and climbed over Jake, lowering himself
onto Jakes erect penis.
"Wait, wait... shouldn't I put on a rubber?" Jake looked into Christians
eyes, his hands clawing at Christian back.
"Fuck it." Christian replied, eager to continue. Jake groped Christian
right breast and laid his lips over the nipple, kissing it tenderly all
the while Christian let himself fall onto Jakes thighs. Christian reached
forward and pressed his hands onto the headboard and pinned Jake in
place. Jake sucked on Christians soft skin all the way up to his neck,
leaving a glistening trail of saliva like a snail would leave a trail of
ooze on the ground.
"Oh God!" Jake said loudly. "Oh---shit!" Christian took that as a sign of
approaching climax and braced himself for eruption. Jake tightened his
leg muscles and buried his face in Christians neck, breathing hard as he
unloaded inside Christian. It was all too much for Chris and he once
again began to climax for the second time. He rubbed his cheek on Jakes
and they held onto each other for a moment, gathering themselves. It was
close to two in the morning when they fell asleep. Jake lay on the right
side of the bed facing Christian and extending his left arm out so that
it could be used as a pillow to hold up Christians sleeping head.
Christian faced Jake and had his left hand perched on Jakes hip, his
fingers still moving slowly and in a circular motion, caressing Jakes
skin and putting him to sleep. Their rhythmic breathing becoming each
others lullaby.
                                      +++

Jake stir in bed, the white sheets wrapped around his legs and rendered
him immobile. He reached up with his arms, stretching out his long limbs
to wake them up from their deep sleep. He looked around, the light around
him blurry in his still weary eyes as they adjusted to the bright
surroundings. Jake sat up in bed and rubbed his face while letting out a
sigh laced in fatigue and boredom. Once his eyes focused they looked to
see a bed occupied only by him.
"Christian?" Jake groaned. "Chris?!" Christian came from inside the
bathroom, leaning against the door way with a toothbrush in his mouth.
Jake smiled and Christian walked back into the restroom to clean himself
off. The last thing Jake saw was the back of Christians faded blue boxers
making their way into the bright room. The faucet turned on and water
splashed into the porcelain sink then Christian turned the lights off and
walked out to make his way besides Jake on the bed. He sat at the edge
and Jake leaned over to greet him good morning with a soft kiss on the
lips.
"It's about time your lazy ass got up." Christian joked.
"How long have you been awake?" Jake replied in a low tone of voice.
"Only about ten minutes."
"Shit, what time is it?"
"Eleven thirty, I think. Are you going to have to leave soon?"
"No, I'm all yours." Jake said as he pulled Christian to his side on the
bed. He wrapped his right arm around Christians neck, holding him in a
sort of loving head lock. Christian laid his head on Jakes chest and
placed his hand over his bare stomach.
"Oh wait, look." Christian sat up again and reached into his drawer to
pull out the magazine with the picture of him, Jake and Maggie. He handed
the magazine to Jake and looked to see his reaction. Jake read the cover
and saw the headline over the picture.
"Oh, wow." He giggled, eyes wide. Jake flipped the magazine open and
scanned through the pages to find the article. Once finding it, Jake held
the magazine in his hands and read the small article.
"...Afterwards taking a short walk to Jakes car and finally making their
way out of the paparazzo's view." Jake read out loud. "...Makes us
wonder where else these two men will be parting." He laughed. "This is
great."
"Ashley noticed it one night when we were walking down the street and I
got it to keep as my first brush with fame." Christian said, laying back
down on Jakes chest. Jake wrapped his arm around him again and read more
of the article then finally placing it down on t he bed.
"So how'd you like the birthday party?" Christian asked, sliding his
fingers along the line marked down by a path of hair leading under the
sheets.
"It was great. How long did you know about it?"
"Just for a little while. Maggie called me a few weeks ago and told me
what was going on. You knew nothing about it?"
"Yeah, no. I didn't know a thing. I asked her if she had planned anything
but she denied it all so..." Jake smiled.
"She loves you, you know."
"Who Maggie? I know, she's so great isn't she? I don't know what I'd do
if she ever just got up and left. It's nice to have family here
especially family that can relate to this business, you know?"
"Yeah, but do you ever want to just give it all up? Move out of L.A. and
start a new life where no one knows your name or face? Grow old and die
with the person you end up spending the rest of your life with?"
"Are you that person?" Jake asked in a whisper.
"Have you told anyone yet?" Christian suddenly changed the subject of the
conversation. Little did he know that this was going to be the worst
thing he could've done.
"Told anyone what?"
"Abut me."
"Yeah, of course. Everyone knows who you are, remember? I introduced you
to all my friends at the party last night."
"I mean do they know about me as more than your friend?"
"You know I can't. Not yet, at least."
"I know, I know. I just thought you would've told someone, a close
friend, family member, anyone." Christian took his hand away from Jake
and leaned back onto his pillow.
"Well don't get mad." Jake looked down at his companion besides him.
"I'm not mad, just a little frustrated. I mean, do you even think of me
as something other than a friend?"
"What do you mean? Like a..." Jakes voice trailed off.
"Boyfriend?"
"Yeah."
"See you can't even say the word."
"Yes I can. It's just that you have keep in mind that I've never had to
call anyone my... boyfriend." Jake stuttered when he said that word that
was so unfamiliar to him.
"This is what I get." Christian uttered under his breath.
"What did you say?"
"I said this is what I get. I knew I should've never let anything happen
at the hotel room that night."
"Wow, Christian. What are you talking about?" Jake asked with a puzzled
look in his eyes.
"Never mind."
"No, come one. What do you mean?"
"I mean this, this right here. We have to keep everything on the down
low, hide the fact that we're not just friends. Do you honestly want to
go on pretending we're old buddies and only completely forget everything
once we're behind four walls?"
Jake looked down at Christian, knowing he was completely right. He did
want to tell everyone he knew that Christian was something more important
to him but couldn't bare to think about the repercussions that could come
along with the confession.
"What do you say we do then?" Jake finally spoke.
Christian hesitated at first but spoke boldly when he finally did. "I
think the best thing to do would be to stop this before it gets too far
along." Jake scoffed and shook his head then rolled over to step off the
mattress. "Where are you going?"
"You're incredible." Jake said as he stood up and turned to Christian. He
was still completely naked, not taking time to cover up his bare naked
body.
"What?" Christian sat up.
"You're going to throw it away just like that. Like you throw away a
piece of gum or piece of fucking toilet paper. Why are you in such a
hurry to get me out?"
"I'm not! I'm just saying that I cant handle being kept in your back
pocket and only taken out when it's convenient for you."
"That's bullshit, alright."
"Yeah? Why exactly did you want to come back here last night, Jake?"
"Because..."
"Because why?"
"Because I wanted to, okay!" Jake shouted out of aggression at Christian.
"Shit." He bent down to pick up his boxer shorts and slid them, first his
right leg then his left. He picked up the rest of his things and looked
up. "If you think this is what should happen then fine. It was fun while
it lasted." Jake stormed out of the room.
"Fun while it lasted?" Christian got up and followed behind, his bare
feet stomping down on the cold hardwood floor. "You said that as if it
was a game you've been playing." He stopped a few feet away from Jake who
was getting back into his clothes in the living room.
"Wasn't it? I mean, you just quit it, game over!" Jake slid on his shirt
and wrapped his sweater around his waist.
"I had an excuse."
"Oh and what was it? You couldn't tell anyone that you were fucking an
actor so you all of a sudden want to call it off?"
"You can say it now, go ahead. 'I'm fucking Jake Gyllenhaal'."
"Shut up!" Christian exclaimed loudly.
"'I'm fucking Jake Gyllenhaal' say it!"
"Fuck you, Jake! What about you?" Christian swallowed hard.
"What about me?"
"You play the role of helpless straight guy seduced by the mean man, oh
and you played it perfectly. Greatest acting role to date,
congratulations!"
"You're a jerk." Jake yelled.
"Son of a bitch. And you know God damn well this isn't even like what you
think!"
"Then what is it like?" Christian stayed quiet. "Look, I know I can't do
everything that I would like to with you because of the position I'm in.
Do you think I like acting like as if we're only friend around others?
Last night all I wanted to do was tell each and every one in there that
you and me are together but I couldn't so now I'm kicking myself for it.
I came so close, so fucking close to telling someone the other day but I
chickened out. Think back to when you had to hide the fact from your
family and then tell me that you want to go and end things because I
can't come out. I've tried, Christian. I have!" Jake inched himself
closer to Christian, waving his hands madly as he tried to explain
himself. He could see Christians eyes begin to swell with tears with
every passing second. He got close enough to Christian where as to hold
gently by the neck and look directly into his eyes. "Look at me and tell
me you truly want to stop seeing me." Christian only looked at Jake in
silence, a tear escaped his bottom eye lid and ran down his cheek, onto
Jakes hand. Jake wished he could teleport himself into Chris' head and
see what he was thinking right at that moment.
"I know you have." Christians voice cracked. "And I'm sorry for rushing
you to do something you're not ready to do."
"It's okay." Jake smiled and went to kiss Christian, trying to make up
for what had happened but to much to his surprise, Christian turned his
head.
"But I can't go on pretending everything is okay." Jake let go of
Christian and stepped back. He looked down at his feet and smiled to
himself. There was nothing he could do now besides leave and not turn
back.
"Okay." Jake replied in a malleable voice. He slowly turned and made his
way to the door to vacate the sorrow filled apartment. Christian wiped
his eyes to see the open path laid in front of him. Following behind,
Christian stopped at the door as Jake stepped out and turned to him. "You
know, I thought that being with a guy would be a little bit easier than
being with a woman because of the whole same likes and dislikes thing
but I was wrong, goodbye." Jake retorted and gave Christian one last
smile and nod before turning around and heading for the elevator at the
end of the empty hallway. Suddenly the world became harsh and
unforgiving, revolving not for the sake of life but for the mere
satisfaction of giving people like Jake and Christian a taste of what
it's like in the real world. This wasn't a movie playing out to be viewed
by an audience sitting comfortably in their seats, this was a
relationship that would turn into shit if not saved. Christian shut the
door and walked to his bedroom to gather his thoughts. It was a lot to
take in. He sat on the foot of the mattress and brought his legs to his
chest, resting his chin on his knees, staring at the emptiness ahead of
him. Christian laid back onto the bed and turned over on the pillow, the
scent of Jake still lingered on the thing, white cover, slowly making
it's way into his nostrils. Chris threw the pillow on the floor and
rolled over.

Jake walked out of the apartment complex in heat and took out his cell
phone to call a taxi since he had driven in Christians car the night
before. The taxi company gave him a time to wait and Jake did just that,
wait. He stood on the street curb and rewound the mornings events in his
head. He felt warm and his stomach churned when he thought about
Christian and him in a heated argument. Jake knew he was going to have to
get over it but what he didn't know is how hard it was going to be at
first. Neither of them knew how long it would be since they were to see
each other again. Only fate could predict the final outcome of this
unsadisfactory situation.
