Ok as well before we start this is based on the series Star Trek Voyager
but with a twist from the original story line and i hope you like it.

Chapter 12: The Long Night

"Oh that's just great, she calls you and off you go running like her little
lap dog. It seems like you should be dating her than me." Tom shouted at me
in our quarters. It had been 2 months since we entered the region of space
that the crew was calling the void. It was a pure black area of space that
had no stars and by the estimates of Seven of Nine it would take two years
for us to cross. The first month or so had been okay, it gave a lot of the
crew the chance to unwind and catch up on things that they really hadn't
had a chance to do in so long. As for me and Tom we had re-arranged our
quarters, taken a vacation on the Holodeck to Austria on Earth where we
went skiing and just basically had a good time. A lot of the crew were
rarely on shift. I think I was doing about 4 shifts a week all 8 hours
long. But after the first month things started to lose their appeal and the
crew was getting restless. As for me and Tom we had started to argue a lot
and this was just what was happening now. The trouble was the captain had
isolated herself from the crew. She rarely left her quarters and for some
strange reason she seemed to only allow certain people into her quarters
and I was one of them. She had called me and asked me to go over. I had
tried to get her to explain to me why she was isolating herself but she
wouldn't tell me. Tom, I knew, was getting pissed off at how much time I
was spending with the captain and I'm sure on some level he was jealous of
the fact she was monopolising my time. "What the fuck are you talking
about?!" I yelled back at him. "Janeway, you care more about her than you
do me." He screamed back at me. "Oh get over yourself Tom, Kathryn is my
friend and if you're going to be like this then I'd rather spend time with
her." I gathered myself together and headed for the Tom. "Don't walk out
those doors, we're not done here" he shouted at me. I whirled around. That
was it I had enough of him. "Tom, I'm going to say this once more for your
tiny little brain to understand, don't ever tell me what to do and stop
being so bloody childish. Now I'm going out and when I get back either be
in a better mood or go find something to do because I want some quiet
time." I told him and walked out the door. As I walked down the corridor I
noticed some crewmen stood talking and catching up. I continued down the
corridor rounding a few corners before finally arriving outside the
captain's quarters. I pressed the door chime and she asked "Who is it?"
"Jack" I replied. "Come in." She said. The doors opened and I entered her
dimly lit quarters. "Hi." I said. "Hey, take a seat won't you." She said
gesturing to her couch as she poured us some coffee. I walked over and sat
down as she handed me a cup. "So how have you been?" she asked. "Just the
same, Tom still starting fights. I think at the minute it's the only way we
actually talk." I told her. She chuckled and said, "Yeah well this region
of space will do that to you. I mean look at me." I took a sip of my coffee
and said "Yeah about that, listen Kathryn I don't mean to step out of line
here but you picked a bad time to isolate yourself from the crew, they need
to see you and this ship needs her captain." I told her. "Jack please don't
start this again." She said. "Just tell me why?" I asked. "You really want
to know why?" she replied. "Yes otherwise I wouldn't have asked." I told
her. "I'm selfish." She said. "What do you mean?" I asked. "I made an error
in judgement, it was short sighted and it was selfish and now all of this
crew is paying my for my mistake." She told me. "Kathryn you're not making
any sense." She looked straight at me and said "The Delta Quadrant. I am
responsible for getting this crew trapped 70,000 lights years from their
families. And that is a burden I have to live with. Up until now I told
myself `This mission has been a success.' But then we hit this void and I
had more than enough time to think back and I realise I made an error in
judgement. I mean look at you you're 25 and trapped so far away from your
family. You're just a young man and someone at your age should not be away
from his family." I held my hand up and said "Okay listen to me, we had
this discussion before and now I want you to really listen, this is not all
your fault, every member of this crew knows how important that sacrifice
was that you made at the start of the journey, but ask one person if they
thought it was a bad idea and they would tell straight away `NO' because
they believe this is a worthwhile mission. They're seeing things that no
one has ever come across before. Don't beat yourself up about things that
happened it the past. We will get home before I turn 40 I guarantee you
that even if I have to design and develop a revolutionary new way of
travelling at warp." I told her causing her to smile. "You're right as
usual. Now go and make up with your boyfriend and tell him if he keeps
arguing with you that I will leave these quarters just to kick his ass."
She told me causing me to laugh out loud. I got up and walked out but
before I left I said, "I'll pass on the message. Bye Kathryn" She smiled
and waved.

As I entered my quarters I was expecting to see Tom and start another
fight. I looked around he was nowhere to be seen. I went into the bathroom
and looked at the bathtub. 3 weeks I asked Chakotay if I could expand my
bathroom and build a bathtub and he had agreed seen as the room next door
to my quarters was a unused storage bay. So after speaking with B'Elanna
she and I knocked down the wall built another and then built a bathtub
similar to what Captain Janeway has in her bathroom. It was a standard
issue bathtub with a slight modification, instead of taps I had a small
fountain installed that worked on computer activation. "Computer activate
the bathtub." I ordered. The computer chirped and the plug hole covered
over with a small plate and hot water slowly began to pour from the
fountain picking up speed. I added some bubble bath and a bath bomb for
relaxation. I then went back into the main area and grabbed some candles
and a lighter. After setting them up and lighting them around the bathroom
I went back into the bedroom and stripped out of my uniform into my
dressing gown. "Computer locate Tom Walker." I asked. The computer chirped
and replied "Ensign Walker is in the mess hall." Good then he wouldn't
disturb me. I went back into the bathroom and saw the bathtub was now full
and the fountain had deactivated. I took off my dressing gown and boxers
and climbed in. Having washed my hair I grabbed a small towel and wrapped
it around my hair and lay back, closed my eyes and relaxed. I must have
been in the bath for about 20 minutes and felt so relaxed. The water was
nice and hot, but not so hot that it felt like I was being boiled
alive. "Jack are you here?" I heard Tom shout. "I'm in the bath, and if
you're here to argue don't bother." I replied. He came into the bathroom
and stood before me with a big bunch of roses. I opened my eyes and looked
at him. I noticed the flowers in his arms and a bottle of champagne in the
other. "What's this?" I asked. "My not so subtle way of saying I'm sorry
for acting like the biggest jerk in the quadrant earlier. It wasn't fair of
me to have a go at you because Janeway wanted to see you." He told. He
handed me the flowers when I smiled and I smelt them. "They're beautiful
thank you." I said. I handed him them back considering I was in the bath
and he took them into the living area and came back with two champagne
glasses and a bowel of chocolate covered strawberries. I looked at him and
said "Are you just the cutest." He smiled and said "Does this mean I'm
forgiven?" I nodded. He opened the champagne and poured two glasses and
handed me one. It was still nice and cold. I took a sip and put it on the
side. He then took a strawberry and fed it to me. I smiled at that. "Well
are you getting in?" I asked gesturing to the bath. "Am I allowed?" he
asked. "I suppose so." I replied. He smiled and stripped off and joined
me. I took another sip of champagne and I moved over to him. I slipped in
between his legs and lay against his chest. He wrapped his arms around my
and let them sit on my chest. "I love you." He said. "I love you to." I
replied. He leaned down and kissed me on the cheek and fed me another
strawberry. After about 25 minutes in the bath we heard a voice in the main
area. "Jack, Tom are you here?" It was B'Elanna. "We're in the bath." I
shouted back. She walked into the bathroom and looked at us. "Oh so you 2
made up then." She said sitting on the corner of the bath. This wasn't
unusual for her to see the two of us either naked or semi naked. "How did
you know we fought?" I asked. "I saw Tom mopping around the mess hall." She
said. I smiled at him turning my body to see him and said "Well that's just
so cute." He blushed and I kissed him. B'Elanna grabbed a strawberry and
ate it. "Hey." I said playfully. She stuck her tongue out and
smiled. "B'Elanna." I heard someone shout. "In here." She replied. The door
opened and in walked Tom Paris and Harry Kim. I looked at them and said
"Hey guys welcome to the show." They laughed and said "Sorry to interrupt."
"Don't be sorry why don't we just have the whole crew come in." Tom
said. Harry sat down on my toilet lid which was down and Paris sat on the
floor by B'Elanna. "Champagne?" I asked. They laughed "Sure why not." They
replied. "Then go get some glasses." Said Tom. B'Elanna walked out and
returned with 3 glasses. She poured the champagne and handed them to Paris
and Kim keeping one for herself. "So how are things going?" asked
Tom. "Boring and even more boring. We just came to see if B'Elanna wanted
to go to the gym." Said Paris. She looked at them and said "Sure." They
rounded off their champagne after we talked for a while and then headed
out. Tom and I went back to relaxing and the water was still nice and hot
even though we had been in here for a while. They had also helped to round
off our chocolate covered strawberries. After spending over an hour in the
bath already Tom began to wash me and afterwards I did the same to him. "Do
you want to go to the holodeck provided it's free?" he asked. "I'd rather
go get something to eat." I said. He smiled and said "okay." We got out the
bath and dried off, I went into the bedroom to blow dry and straighten my
hair while Tom stayed in the bathroom and had a shave. I got out my hair
dryer and started to dry my long hair. It had gotten so long. After I dried
my hair I got dressed in to a fresh uniform while Tom sat on the bed
waiting for me to finish and do his hair. I got out my GHD hair
straightners circa 2009 and completely straightened my hair which took a
good 20 minutes. When I was done I went over to Tom and straightened his
hair which was shortish, but still long enough to straighten. I then
grabbed some hair products and styled his hair and sprayed hairspray in his
hair to make it stick. When I was done he put on his boots while I washed
my hands. "ready?" he asked. "Yep." I replied and we walked out the
quarters and to the mess hall hand in hand.

As we sat in the mess hall eating there were plenty of crewmen up and
about. A lot peoples sleeping patterns were really off, as I checked the
time and it was 00:30 hours and here I was just eating dinner. "So, when
are you next on shift?" I asked. "Thursday at 09:00. You?" tom answered
me. "Wednesday but I'm on the bridge in command, from 11:00" I told him. He
nodded and said "I'll pop and see you then. What did you want to do after
dinner?" he asked. "We could see if the holodeck is free." I replied
causing him to smile. "What program?" he asked. "Well I read your holonovel
and I think I'm persuaded to run it." I told him causing him to smile
again. His holonovel was a gay drama. It was set in the early 21st century
circa 2013 in New York on Earth. It told the story of two men who meet in a
bar when they are with friends, spend the night together and really fall in
love. But when one of them goes missing the other goes all over the world
to try to rescue him when he receives a ransom demand. The character that
would go missing is Tom and I would play the guy who would do all the
searching. "Great, I promise you won't regret it." He said. "But there is a
condition to it, when we finish yours you have to play mine." I told
him. "What was yours again?" he asked. "You know the Halliwells from the
21st century TV Series Charmed." I told him. "Oh yeah I watched a few
episodes but they are all women." He told me. "I know we won't actually be
playing the sisters, I found a story in the database which is Gay Themed
that relates to the two boys that Piper had, Chris and Wyatt and also
another guy who is friend of their family called James who form the charmed
ones, but this time the male ones." I explained. "Sounds fun, what
characters would we play?" he asked. I took a sip of my drink and said "I
would be Wyatt, while you would play James. They fall in love and have a
baby together." He smiled and then looked down into his cup circling the
rim. "Have you thought any more to us having children?" he asked. I smiled
and raised his head with my hand and said "Actually yeah, but I want to do
it after we're married." His eyes widened and a huge smile crept on his
face "So you really want to have children?" he asked. "Yes, but I want us
to plan things out and wait until we're both fully committed to raising a
child. And I want to do it once we're out of this bloody void." I
said. "Agreed so what get married in about 2 years and then start trying?"
he asked. "Yeah that works for me." I replied. He leaned over the table and
kissed me. "That sounds perfect. I love you." He told me. "I love you
more." I replied kissing him back. "Bridge to Ensign Walker." Came to
Chakotays voice over the comm. separating us. "Go ahead sir." He
replied. "Tom I need you to take over engineering for the night shift. I
have assigned two teams to get to work on conserving more deuterium and I
have left engineering short. Seen as you haven't worked for 2 days and Jack
was only on shift yesterday I would like you to take charge." He told
him. "Understood sir, I'm on my way." He answered. The channel ended and
said "So much for the holodeck, I'm sorry babes, will you be okay?" he
asked. "Yeah of course, go" I replied kissing him. He got up and left.

As I entered mine and Tom's quarters I sat on the couch and wondered what I
could. It was at times like these I got really bored. "Carter to Captain
Janeway" I said over the comm. "Go ahead Jack" she replied. "Would you like
to come over for coffee?" I asked. "Sure give me two minutes." She said
ending the channel. Seconds later the air beside me shimmered and Captain
Janeway materialised in a blue hue. "Hi." I said. "Hey, thanks for the
offer of coffee." She said. I went to the replicator and replicated a pot
of coffee and two empty cups and poured coffee into both of them. I handed
her a mug as she sat in one of the arm chairs. I set the mug on the coffee
table Tom and I had replicated and sat on the couch. "So I take it you two
didn't make up?" she asked. "Actually we did." I said pointing to the roses
which Tom had placed in a vase. She went over and looked at them and
smelled them. "They are gorgeous." She said. "He brought me them when I was
in the bath." I said smirking. "You have a bath?" she asked. "Yeah did I
not mention that Chakotay gave us permission to expand the quarters? Can
you not tell?" I asked. "Come to think of it, yeah it seems bigger in here
now." She said. I took her into the bathroom to show her what we had done
and she said "Just like the one in mine." I nodded and we went back and sat
and chatted. As we were talking I could have sworn I head lights going off
in the corridor. A few seconds later, the lights in my quarters started to
go out until the room was pitch black. "Jack?" Janeway asked. "I have no
idea." I replied, getting up and fumbling to make my way into the
bathroom. Once in the bathroom I turned the light on which was an
independent light that I replicated that worked on micro power cell which
gave just enough light to light the candles which Tom and I used when we
were in the bath. I carried two candles out in the main room to see the
captain stood up. "What happened?" I asked. "I don't know but I don't like
it. We need to get to a weapons locker." She replied. We went to the door
but they didn't open. "Hold on, we have an engineering kit in here which
contains a manual release." I said walking with a candle to find it. Once I
got the manual release and let us out we walked down the hall with the
candles until we got to the weapons locker which was just round the corner
from my quarters. Using the manual release I opened the door and the
captain helped me force the doors open. When we entered she grabbed two
compression rifles and passed me one. The compression riffle was the next
step up from a phaser rifle and to me was a lot easier to handle. After
charging the riffle and turning on the light beacon which was on the top I
looked at the captain and we left the weapons locker and went down the
corridor. She led the way and as we walked she held up her hand. "I just
saw something." She whispered. We crept further down the hall and saw
another light source. As I aimed my weapon the light shone and I could make
out Chakotay and Neelix. Chakotay was pointing his wrist beacon at
something, a black looking creature that had a strange look to it. I saw it
running towards the commander and Neelix and pulled the trigger of my
riffle hitting the alien in the side. He turned and looked at me before
trying to then run off. This time the captain and I both fired but instead
of hitting the alien we hit the bulkhead. "Follow us." Said Janeway to
Chakotay and Neelix I led the way to engineering, which was the obvious
place to go to. "We should grab a power cell" said Chakotay.

After spending around 20 minutes climbing through pitch black Jeffries
tubes we finally arrived on deck 11 where we entered a storage bay and
grabbed a power cell before making our way to engineering. While the
captain and I forced the doors opened with our riffles, Chakotay and Neelix
stood waiting holding onto the power cell. I could hear people shouting on
the other side of the door. When we made an opening in the door I slipped
my fingers through started to pull the doors apart, and when they were wide
enough the captain put her riffle against the door and helped me to push it
open. "How about a little light over here?" I heard Tom shout. "We can do
better than that; this power cell should be enough to get emergency power
back online." I shouted. "Up here, we'll hook it up directly to the EPS
Manifolds." Said B'Elanna from the second level where I could see here but
holding my phaser upside down and aiming the light up at her. Chakotay and
Neelix carried the power cell up the ladders to the second level while the
captain and I looked over the core. It was completely frozen. When we saw
Chakotay and Neelix on the upper level we both went up the ladder to the
second level as we saw power coming back online. I went down the steps to
the command console with the Captain and Chakotay while Tom and B'Elanna
worked on the engines. I lay my riffle down on the console and started to
work. "Janeway to bridge report." Said Janeway over the comm. "The
dampening field has been blocked captain, we're surrounded by 3 alien
vessels, 17 intruders are on board." Tuvok reported from the bridge. As
B'Elanna worked on getting the impulse engines back online, I tried to find
a quicker way to bring the warp drive back in case we had to make a quick
getaway. "We don't have weapons online." Reported Chakotay next to
me. "Tuvok target the ship off our port bow, fire a few warning shots."
Ordered Janeway. I watched on sensors as Tuvok fired phasers just scraping
the alien's shields. The ship rocked registering that the aliens had
returned fire. "Do we have propulsion?" asked Chakotay. "Not yet." Replied
Tom. We took another hit and Tuvok reported "Shields are down." The ship
started to power down as we saw the core slow down. "Not again." Said
Neelix. It didn't last long as the lighting and everything started to come
back to normal. I noticed on sensors that another ship was
approaching. "We've got another contact on sensors and they are firing on
the aliens." I reported. "Can you identify them Jack?" asked the
captain. "No ma'am, but they are leaking a rather excessive amount of Theta
Radiation." I replied. The ship then hailed us and we knew obviously Tuvok
was speaking with them. "I think we found the source of the radiation" said
Janeway. After I noticed that the ship had ended communications with us we
heard Tuvok over the comm. "Bridge to Captain Janeway" he said. "Go ahead
commander" she replied. "We're about to have guests." He told her. "Very
well Chakotay and I will meet in Transporter Room 2" she replied and they
both turned and left. "Jack, get the rest of the engineering crew that
should be on duty up here. We've got repairs to do." Said B'Elanna. "All
Alpha and Beda Engineering crews report for duty." I ordered over the
comm. I picked up the 2 Compression Riffles that the captain and I had and
returned them to the weapons locker.

Over the next few hours I worked with the other engineers to get systems
repaired and to get the warp drive back online. I had heard that the
captain's meeting with the aliens who had saved us, who were called the
Malon, had fallen to pieces. She had also spoken with one of the aliens who
had boarded the ship and determined they weren't hostile as we were
actually on route to return him to his people. I was on the bridge and
looked around. It was nice to see everyone back at their posts and all crew
back on duty. Finally we had something to do. We arrived at the
co-ordinates. After Chakotay informed the captain, the alien vessels
de-cloaked and transported their friend away but not before the doctor ran
a full bio-scan of all the aliens and learned they were all suffering from
Theta Radiation poisoning. The Malon were killing them. As the next few
hours rolled on I continued to monitor the repair crews efforts as B'Elanna
was busy making the repairs as well she had me co-ordinate it all. People
from the repair crews were coming up to the bridge and giving me reports
which I was reading through and then placing them in a case to take to
B'Elanna to go through. At 09:00 Chakotay let me finish shift as I had been
on duty for over 9 hours. I went back to my quarters to find that Tom was
also in bed fast asleep. Just as I was about to crawl in to bed the door
chimed. "Come in." I said. The doors opened and in walked Chakotay. "Sorry
to interrupt but can we talk." He asked. "Sure what is it?" I asked. "It's
the captain, you may have noticed that she has been elusive lately. She has
rarely let anyone see her. I know you have been seeing her and I wanted to
know if she had mentioned anything to you." He explained. "She did
actually. She told me that she believes she made an error in judgement, and
that she alone is responsible for stranding Voyager in the delta quadrant."
I told him. "I spoke with Tuvok and that's what he also said. She told me
the same thing. Tuvok and I feel that she may try to do something stupid
and I would appreciate your support if a situation should arise." He told
me. "Count on it." I said. "And I also need you and Tom back on duty and I
promise you can both have tomorrow off." He said. "Of course what's up?" I
asked again. "The Malon are coming over to see what we do with our toxic
waste. The captain wants me to give him a demo but I think you and Tom
would be more suited to it." He told me. "Where is he?" he asked. I pointed
over to the bed and he smiled. "Wake him." He told me. I walked over and
pushed him and he mumbled something. "Tom get up we have to be on duty." I
said. "Too tired. Tell them I will see them tomorrow." He said. Chakotay
smiled and came over. "WALKER UP!" he shouted causing tom to leap
up. "Sir." He said. "At ease, but get up I do need you." Chakotay said. Tom
rolled his eyes and said "I'm coming." He climbed out of bed still in his
uniform. He was that tired he didn't even both getting undressed. After
sorting out his hair, we left the quarters and followed Chakotay to
engineering.

"What about the Theta Radiation?" asked Impk. "We recycle the energy, use
to it power everything from life support to replicators." I replied. We had
spent the last hour showing Impk everything about our Warp Technology. "We
don't have this kind of technology." He told me. "Oh, our scans of your
freighter suggest that you have plasma manifolds. The engineering principle
is the same." I told him. "We'd be willing to help you make the
modifications. We could even provide you with a few converters." Said Tom.
"Here's what we had in mind." Said Chakotay giving Impk, the Malon man, the
padd that contained all the specifications that Tom had drawn
together. "Ingenius design. Our engineers would be pleased. This... could
solve a lot of problems on my world. Unfortunately it would also put me out
of business." The Malon explained. I stood gob smacked. "Sorry?" asked
Tom. "Your changes would turn the waste export industry upside down. Before
long I would be obsolete. You can keep your ideas." Impk explained. This
really pissed me off. "You lying..." I said gritting my teeth. "Jack." Said
Chakotay but I couldn't stop I just let rip. "We went through this whole
song and dance and he never had any intention of working with us." I
said. "That's not important, what matters is that we're talking now. We're
proposing changes, some of them difficult. But given time this could turn
to your advantage." Chakotay said. "I already have the advantage. The
Vortex. No one knows about it except me and my crew. By ejecting my cargo
here, I cut expenses in half." Impk replied. "I guess mass murder doesn't
factor in to your profit margin." I shouted. Chakotay threw me a glare. "If
you care so much about these creatures then stay." Impk replied. "We won't
let you go on infecting innocent beings." Said Tom. "You've scanned my
vessel. You've seen my fire power. You wouldn't last 10 seconds in a
conflict with me." Impk retorted. "Get him out of here." Said Chakotay
gesturing to the security officers. He brushed past Chakotay and walked
out. "So much for helping them." I said. "Part of the problem Jack, was
you. If you didn't lash out then maybe we could have resolved this. You're
becoming more and more like B'Elanna every day." Said Chakotay. "Sorry
sir." I said. "Come on let's go and brief the captain." He said. At that I
followed him out of engineering and down to the captain's quarters. After
we had arrived and we explained what went on she asked "What are our
options?" "We travel through the Vortex and speak directly with the Malon
government." Said Chakotay. "Blow the whistle on Impk. We give them the
reclamation technology and continue on our way." Said the captain. "However
there is no guarantee that they will listen to reason. If Mr. Impk is any
indication. As long as this vortex exists the people of this region are in
danger." She went on and explained. "Any chance we could destroy it?" asked
Chakotay. "I believe so." I said looking at the diagram on the captain's
monitor. "But we'll have to collapse it here, where its dimensional radius
is weakest. We'd be closing our shortcut out of here." I said. I looked at
Chakotay. "2 more years in the void. I can live with that." He said. "Oh
but I'm not sure I can. 4 years ago I destroyed the caretakers array to
protect the occampa, that act of compassion stranded this crew in the delta
quadrant, I won't make the same mistake twice." Said Janeway. "Yeah but
Kathryn, this situation is a little different." I said looking at her. "Is
it. I'm asking the crew to make too big a sacrifice." She paused and came
from behind her desk and looked at Chakotay. "Chakotay, there is no one I
trust more than you, apart from Jack of course, you've been a fine first
officer. Are you ready to captain this ship?" she asked. "Yes." Said
Chakotay looking confused. "Assemble the crew."  She told us both as we
left. "What was that about?"Chakotay as me. "Isn't it obvious, she plans to
stay behind and destroy the vortex. We can't let her." I said. "You're
right we can't" he replied.

I sat on the bridge working on my console. B'Elanna was in engineering just
checking over a few last things. "Captain on the bridge." Said Tuvok. I
stood up and took a formal stance as did everyone else on the bridge. She
