Ok as well before we start this is based on the series Star Trek Voyager
but with a twist from the original story line and i hope you like it.

Chapter 7: Birthday Surprise

After having a wonderful day off yesterday, it was Monday and back to work,
but this time with a difference. I started duty at 19:00 in engineering
until 21:00 when commander Chakotay went off duty where I would take over
the bridge for the whole night as the night watch officer. Not to mention
the fact that it was my birthday tomorrow. I hope nobody was planning
anything huge. Mind you I did have a match of Velocity with the captain at
19:00 so there wouldn't be much chance for anything; mind you I was off
duty on Tuesdays after having done the night shift so something could
happen.

When the computer announced "The time is 15:00 hours" I knew it was time to
get out of bed. I wasn't used to getting up this late but I had to sleep
during the day or I would never be able to last the whole night. I got out
of bed and headed for the replicator "Coffee Black." The cup of coffee
appeared and I took it out and took a few sips. I really needed to wake up
properly. I sat at my desk and checked out who was going to be on duty over
night with me. They were all junior officers. Crewman Lang at ops, Crewman
Hargrove at the Helm and then Alex at Tactical. That would be good that I
have Alex on shift with me. After I finished looking through some different
bits on my computer, I got up and headed for the shower. Stripping off I
walked into the shower and called "Computer activate sonic shower."

After finishing in the shower, making my bed and getting into a fresh
uniform, I checked the time and saw that it was only 16:00. I had three
hours to kill. I walked out of my quarters and down the corridor towards
the turbolift. As I rode up to the mess hall, I began to think what it
would be like tonight. As the turbolift stopped I walked out and into the
mess hall. There were a few people eating, one of note was B'Elanna. She
must be on a late lunch. I walked up to Neelix, and said "Hey Neelix,
what's for lunch?" He looked at me and said "Well hello Jack, I just
finished lunch but I can replicate you something if you would like." I
smiled and said "Okay, I'll take a cheese and ham baguette with chips and
lemonade please." I said. He smiled and said "I'll bring it over to you." I
walked away and headed for B'Elanna, "Anyone sitting here?" I asked as she
was reading her pad. She looked up and smiled "Sit down, sorry I was
reading" she said. "One cheese and ham baguette with chips and lemonade."
Said Neelix as he walked up with a plate and glass. "This looks great thank
you Neelix." I said. He placed it down and went back to work. "So, you
ready for your shift tonight?" B'Elanna asked. "Yeah sure, I'll be
fine. How have things gone today?" I asked. "Not bad, we've finally sealed
the hull breach in cargo bay two after the Kazon Incident." She
said. "That's good. How's Tom?" I asked. "He's fine, he was doing his
scrubbing today. I have his report for you that you asked me to do" she
said. "Thanks I'll come to Engineering after this and pick it up" I
replied. "No problem, well I need to shoot off, see you down there" she
said as she walked off, stealing a chip on her way. I continued to eat
lunch when someone behind me said "May I join you?" I turned round to see
Tabor standing behind me with a plate in his hand. "Sure Tabor, have a
seat" I said. He smiled and sat down. "I'm surprised you know who I am; we
don't work together that often." He said in a cute voice. "Of course I know
who you are, I was the chief engineer for while." I replied. He smiled and
said "Well I should be seeing more of you soon, I start working day shifts
from next week" "Well that will be good but I only do day shifts on a
Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Monday and Wednesday nights I'm the night
watch commander." I said. "That's good then, I'll be working all the days
your on days. So is this your first night being the night watch officer?"
he asked. "Yeah, looking forward to it" I said. "Well I should see you on
the bridge, I work from there on a night" he told me. I nodded and said
"Well that will be good to have someone I know." He smiled and blushed a
bit and looked down and continued to eat. That's when our feet clashed
under the table and he looked up worried and said "Sorry Sir." I smiled and
said "That's fine, and I don't call me sir, you make me sound old. Its
Jack" He laughed and said "You're certainly not old." I smiled and said "I
turn 23 tomorrow." He looked at me and said "You really don't look it;
you're too cute to look 23." I looked up at him and raised my eyebrows at
him "I'm sorry what did you say?" slightly shocked that he called. "I'm
sorry I ......" he trailed off and quickly stood up and ran out. Luckily I
had finished eating and I also stood up and ran after him. As I exited the
mess hall I saw him leaning against the wall with a look of pure worry on
his face. "Why did you run off?" I asked. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to call
you cute, I know you're seeing Tom" he explained to me. "It's no problem at
all, you didn't offend me and I think you're cute too, especially with this
look of worry on your face, but it doesn't have to mean anything does it" I
told him. "Thanks. So you're not annoyed?" he asked. "Far from it, I'm
actually flattered" I told. "You really think I'm cute?" he asked. "Yes,
but keep that to yourself." I said. He smiled as I walked away and I knew
he was following me with his eyes.

I entered a turbolift and called out "Engineering." It immediately went
into action and soon I landed in Engineering where I found Tom under a
console cleaning the conduits. I walked up and said "Hey." I must have
shocked him, because he banged his head on the console. I laughed as he
came out from underneath and stood up "I should have known that was you,
Hey how are you?" he asked. "I'm good how's it going?" I asked. "Counting
down the days until I can go back to proper work. Why are you here so
early?" he asked. "I have a report to pick up off B'Elanna regarding a
certain Ensign." I said. He smiled and said "Oh.. Well I should get back to
work" I nodded and walked away. I rounded the corner and entered B'Elanna's
office to see her sat waiting for me. "Would you mind explaining this?" she
said as she handed me a padd. I looked at it and read through it, someone
had altered the deflector protocols to include a phased tachyon pulse
combined with a gravametric displacement wave. In theory these two together
could create a tear subspace. "Don't look at me, I didn't do it." I
said. "Well we need to track down who did it; I'm going to talk to the
captain about it. Feel like joining me?" she asked. "Sure" I said. After
spending over an hour with the captain, explaining what was going on with
the deflector, I went back to my quarters to enter the report about Tom
onto the system. When 18:45 arrived, I walked out of my quarters and down
to engineering. I walked into see B'Elanna still hard at work and Tom
nowhere in sight. I walked over to my console and took at all the
engineering systems to see if anything needed to be sorted out or
repaired. "Looking for something to do for the next two hours?" asked
B'Elanna. "I am actually any ideas?" I replied. "Yeah as a matter of fact
you could head to deflector control and purge these subroutines from the
database." She told me. And so I strolled out of engineering and down to
deflector control.

Well thinking that this task would only take around an hour was a
completely wrong. I was sat in deflector control for a full two hours until
my commbadge went off "Bridge to Lieutenant Carter" came Chakotays
voice. "Go ahead sir" I replied. "I'm heading off duty are you on your way
to the bridge?" he asked. "Yes sir" I replied. I picked up my padd and
headed out the door and walked into a turbolift. "Bridge" I called out. The
turbolift sprang into action and soon I walked out on to the bridge reading
my padd. I looked up and looked around to see commander Chakotay looking at
me. "The bridge is yours lieutenant" he said to me. He smiled at me and
walked off the bridge. I looked around and smiled at the crew on duty and
then sat in the captain's chair reading my padd and filling out the report
on the deflector.

When I finally finished it I looked around again to see the crew still
doing their jobs. I checked the arm rest console between the captain and
first officer chair and the chronometer said it was 23:02. Jesus I had been
sat here for two hours doing this report and the bridge was pretty much
quiet. I closed my eyes and listened and found myself listening to consoles
beeping, people breathing and muttering to themselves. I stood up and
walked in to the ready room to see the captain still sat in her chair, with
her feet up on the desk with a coffee and report in her hand. "Sorry
captain I didn't realise you were still in here" I said to her
softly. "Jack, sorry I didn't realise it was that time. Have you just come
on duty?" she asked. "No sir it's 23:00 hours" I told her. "Really, wow I
should get some sleep." She told me "Is there something I can do for you?"
she asked. "No, I just wanted to grab some coffee from the replicator" I
replied. "Go ahead" she said as she sat up and rubbed her eyes. She sorted
out her desk as I picked up my cup from the replicator and turned to see
her stood up looking at me "Good Night Jack" she said. "Good Night captain"
I replied. I followed her out of the ready room as she headed for the
turbolift and I sat in the captain's chair.

The next hour went by very quickly and soon I looked at the arm rest
console again to see the time being 00:01. "Sir, I have something" said the
crewman at the helm. "What is it?" I said. "Happy Birthday" she replied. I
smiled as the rest of the crew smiled and said the same. "Alright people
carry on" I said. They all returned to their console and continued to
work. The hours rolled on and the clock turned from 01:00 to 06:55 very
quickly and yet I found myself wide awake. I heard the doors to the
turbolift open but took no notice of it; I just thought it was the crew
from auxiliary engineering station changing over. "Happy birthday to you,
happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Jack. Happy birthday to youuu!"
I turned around to see the captain and all the senior staff emerge from the
turbolifts on both sides of the bridge and with Tom stood right by the
captain. "Alright everybody, the day has shift has begun." Said the
captain. All the staff left their stations as the Primary shift staff took
their stations. "Mr Tuvok you have the bridge if that's alright with you,
the rest of the senior staff you're with me to the mess hall and that
includes you Jack" said the captain. "Of course captain, I would be glad to
take the bridge." Replied Tuvok. We all left the bridge and went down to
the mess hall. As we walked into the mess hall, there was a banner up with
`Happy Birthday Jack' on it and a big table set up in the middle of the
room with settings for everyone and with full English breakfasts in each
place. "Oh wow thank you guys" I said with my eyes watering. Tom was
holding my hand leading me over to the table. He sat me down at the head
and everyone took their places. They had obviously been here before because
they all put presents on their knees which they then put on the floor. "Bon
Appétit" said the captain. As we all tucked in everyone talked and spoke
about different things when the captain said "How was your shift last night
Jack?" I looked at her and said "Quiet... very quiet" I said. Everyone
laughed and I said "But that's good it gave me a chance to do some work."
As we rounded off breakfast everyone went quiet as Neelix took away our
plates. "Well Jack you are another year older have you got anymore wisdom
than you did last year?" asked the captain. "I don't think so" I said. We
all laughed and tom said "Well you may be 23 today but your still as cute
as ever" I smiled and kissed him. "Presents" said B'Elanna as she handed me
a present. "Thank you." I said. It was rectangular box which was shallow. I
opened the box and inside was a T-Shirt which was a made by a 1950's
designer Penguin which was re-branded circa 2008. It was a black polo
shirt. "Oh B'Elanna its fantastic thank you" I said. Other people handed me
presents. Chakotay got a me a Native American pendant. He did explain what
it was about but I've forgotten what it was, but it was gorgeous. Tom Paris
and Harry Kim clubbed together to get me a new set of ski's because I love
skiing. Neelix and Kes got me a new orchid for my quarters. Chakotay gave
me a gift from Tuvok which was a collection of the finest Vulcan literature
which was sweet I guess. The captain then gave me her present. It was a
similar box to B'Elanna's and I opened it to see a pair of Jeans that were
Diesel another 21st Century designer. "Oh Captain there fantastic thank
you" I said with a huge smile on my face. "Well B'Elanna and I spoke and we
know how much you love fashion from the 21st Century, so it made sense."
she replied. Tom then looked at me and said "Well I've got you a couple of
things so here's the first." He said. He handed me a shoe box and I opened
it to find a new pair of white pumps circa 2010. "Oh thank you" I said. He
then gave me another present and this one was smaller. I tore at the paper
to find a picture of me and Tom after our time on the beach. I suddenly
began to cry. It was such a cute picture of us and it reminded me of how
much I loved him. At the bottom of the picture it said `I'm yours... always
and forever!' He hugged me and said "Babes don't cry" I looked into his
eyes and kissed him. Everyone sighed and I said "This is amazing thank you
so much. We left our hug and I said "Guys this is amazing thank you so much
for all the gifts." "It's no problem Jack, and I hate to cut this short but
we should really get to duty stations and you need some sleep. But I'll see
you on holodeck 1 at 19:00 for our game" said the captain. Slowly everyone
left patting me on the shoulder. When everyone had gone, Tom helped me with
my gifts back to my quarters. As we put everything down he turned to me and
wrapped his arms around my neck as I put mine around his waist. He kissed
me again and he said "I've got to go, but I will see you after your match
with the captain for dinner and some holodeck time." He kissed me again and
then left. I took off my uniform, got in the shower and then headed into my
bed. "Computer Lights out" I said. The room went dark and I was gone.

When I woke up again I checked the time and it was 17:30 hours. God I had
slept all day and part of the night. I got up and grabbed some coffee and
then went into the bathroom and had a shower, made my bed and got into my
clothes. I put on a pair of Jeans and a T-shirt and then grabbed a bag put
in some shorts and a vest top and pair of trainers. I checked the time and
it was 18:34, I exited my quarters and headed down to the armoury which was
just down the hall. "Janeway to Carter" I heard over the comm. "Go ahead
Captain." I replied. "Jack grab me a phaser if you would and I'll meet you
on Holodeck 1" she said. "Aye sir." I replied. The comm. Clicked off. I
walked into the armoury and grabbed two phasers. I put them in my bag and
went down to Holodeck one. As I arrived outside the holodeck I noticed it
was already active. I walked in and found myself walking down a street. I
noticed a door with a sign that said `Chez Sandrine'. I walked in and the
place was dark. Suddenly the lights came on and everyone shouted
"Surprise."  I was gob smacked. I looked around to see the senior staff
plus Tom, Luke, Tabor and the doctor and Alex. "Oh My God!" I said. Tom
came up and kissed me. Neelix walked up with a big cake and candles on
it. "Make a wish" I closed my eyes and thought of my parents wishing that
they were here with me. This was always my wish I wanted them with me!
"What did you wish for?" asked Kathryn. "My Parents to be with me" I
replied. She put her arm around me and said "I'm sure there thinking of
you" she replied. Alex walked up and gave me a hug and said "Happy Birthday
dude." He handed me a present. I opened it and it was hip flask that was
engraved saying Happy Birthday Buddy. I laughed and said "Thanks so much,
but you know I'm not that much of a heavy drinker" I said laughing. "I know
but there is a twist to this flask, this is an exact replica of the hip
flask that Zefram Cochrane used to have." He told. "I had this idea of
researching him when I was at the academy and I remembered that this was
the one thing he always had on him, and seen as he is someone you admire it
seemed natural" he went on to tell me. "Thanks so much dude this means a
lot" I said. Luke gave me a gift which was a new watch that I can wear when
I'm off duty. It was a classic design circa 2011 made by another of my
favourite designers Gucci. Finally Tabor gave me a ancient bajoran
figurine.

Neelix cut the cake handed out pieces while Tom Paris went behind the bar
and served glasses of champagne. After everyone had some cake and a glass
of champagne we ate and drank and talked between us. When everyone had
finished the cake and topped up their glasses Tom tapped his glass with a
spoon and said "Folks, I would like to have your attention, I have one more
gift to give to my wonderful and beautiful boyfriend." He pulled out a
small box that was wrapped. I tore off the paper and opened the box so find
a necklace with a small heart on it. It was a locket. I opened the locket
to find a small picture of Tom in it. "So you can keep a close eye on me
even when I'm not around and I can also be close to your heart" he said to
me. This did have me crying like a baby. He hugged me so close and I dried
my eyes and then said "So captain, are we going to play this game?" she
smiled and said "Okay folks who would like to see if I can beat our
birthday boy here in a game I'm awesome at." Everyone laughed and said
"Sure." She then changed the program so that we were at the international
velocity courts on earth. I then went and got changed with Tom's help
;). As I walked out onto the court the rest of the senior staff were there
in the stands cheering us on and drinking beer and wine. Holographic of
course. "Computer begin round one" said the captain.

"Full impact.. final round to carter. Winner Carter" said the
computer. "Alright Jack you win. That's two game tonight you won so were
done." Said the captain. I checked the time to see that it was 21:00. I
changed and showered then headed back into the stands as the captain
ordered the program changed back to sandrines and there waiting was a
buffet. That did it. It was then that I realised I had the best boyfriend
and the greatest friends.

At 23:30, we all decided to call it a night and each left the
holodeck. When Tom and I arrived back at my quarters with even more
presents he took me by waist and said "I have one more gift for you." I
smiled and said "Oh yeah and what's that?" I asked. He lead me to the
bedroom pushed me on the bed and that was when the fun really began. He
took off my top along with his and began to kiss my chest and flicking my
